A piece of my childhood
I'm a little prejudiced about the subject since the little railroad ran past my grandparents dining room window. Dr. Hilton does a fine job documenting the road's history and happily provides many photographs any railroad fan will love. Once upon a time little railroads like this were the lifeline of the country, and the Ma & Pa was a jewel. Incidentally, Ma & Pa comes from the lettering the Maryland & Pennsylvania used on its equipment. They used M & Pa so not to be confused with the Missouri Pacific. Some chance! The addition of the other "a" was a natural.

The REAL Chef of all time
Fernand Point was the greatest chef of all time. This is especially evident when one considers that his apprentices included Paul Bocuse and Jean Banchet. Point was so driven a cuisinier that he literally died in his kitchen, of a heart attack. During the German occupation of France, rather than serve the German officers, he politely closed his restaurant, one of few to do so. A master of simplicity, it was he who started the lightening of the heavy classical style, while never compromising essential flavors; in fact, he made the essential flavors come through like they never had before! He embodied all the familiar notions one has of an old-school French chef: Tyrant, drinker, and an absolute fanatic for detail and precision. This book is a must for anyone who is, or takes his or her self as a serious gastronome. An absolute must.

Excellent read. Relevant to our times
This book is about a female Railroad telegrapher around the turn of the century.

For those interested in either Railroading Or Telegraphy, it is excellent.

More than that, though, it shows the will of a woman who is determined to "make it" and she does not take any "stuff" off of anybody.

She has a failed marriage and a baby and learns telegraphy as a matter of survival. Of course, it is still a male dominated profession but it shows the sheer will of survival and she goes about her way and does her job and she did succeed.

Ma Kiley faced the same issues that working women do today: female discrimination, child care, etc, but she does it all and without complaint.

I highly recommend this well written book to all who are interested in any of the subjects of telegraphy and railroading and this lady's spirit shows through.

The Magical Element of Doing Right
This was one of my favorite books when I was a little girl (about age 5). It's about a poor peasant boy (Ma Lien) in China who longs for a brush so he can paint. His wish is granted magically with a brush that allows his paintings to come to life. He immediately begins traveling the country helping other people by painting things that will benefit them. An evil emperor steps in and demands Ma Lien paint gold for him. Ma Lien complies, but tricks the emperor, who perishes. The boy is then able to continue helping other people with his gift.

This book is a terrific example of using one's gifts to benefit others and not allowing greed and temptation to deter us from our path. It is written so that even a young child can appreciate the magical quality of the story and an older one can hone in on truths that will help them in their own lives.

This book has prompted some interesting discussions between my older son (age 6) and me, something that is wonderful! A thought-provoking book that encourages children to talk to their parents! How fabulous is that?

An absolutely MARVELOUS book!!
This is one of the best books I've ever seen for preparing your child for a sibling's birth, especially if you are planning a homebirth or an unassisted birth! The mother in the story has her baby outdoors, by the barn, unassisted, with the big sister arriving moments later to help her get back to the house. It's very empowering and really a feel-good book about birth for kids.

Wonderful!!!
The amazing personal account of the life of The Great Serge Lifar! Lifar chronicles his childhood in Kiev, beginnings in ballet, and life with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and beyond. Lifar is one of the most important figures in the history of dance, not only as a performer, but also as a historian. His contributions and sacrifices to his art in World War II Paris were invaluable to the survival of ballet as we know it. Truly a must-read for any dancer, dance instructor, or anyone else interested in reading an inspirational, as well as educational, book.

the best accounting of the human condition available now
This is more than a book. It is a study. I have been studying it for almost 15 years. Well worth the time and effort.

Get out your dictionary. Msrs G and Longchenpa are very exact. They say more in a paragraph than most "experts" on the human mind and livingness say in a lifetime.

Mr G and L deserve highest praise.
