Great Book! One of the "Images of America" titles.
Let me preface that this is my uncle's book, so I am somewhat biased!

However, I loved this book. He has put together a wonderful pictorial representation of old Holoyoke MA drawing on pictures from local historical archives. You really get a feel for what life was like during the turn of the century, and some visions of how it has changed.

This was my first "Images of America" book, but since then I have purchased numerous others. What a great way to see local istory.

How to Write and Give a Speech
The Washington Post praised this as a "how-to classic" and I would agree with them. It's well-organized and filled with top-quality professional advice. It's also very 'readable' - which sets it apart from so many public speaking texts.

I found this book saved me a lot of time and worry, both in preparing formal speeches and informal presentations. Most important, it will make you a much better, and more confident, speaker.

An illustrated fairy tale about incest and alcoholism.
In "once upon a time" terms, this book artfully describes the terrifying isolation of a little girl molested and sworn to secrecy by her Father. She soars from her terrifying powerlessness to a self of magical power, yet she detaches from the real world and is inordinately shy. Once in college, she is terrified again by the sexual activities in her dorm and loses the protection of her magical powers until she finds "the wine". This illustrated fairy tale is a profound, powerful story, a reading m

One of a series of Four
Volume I covers Monoaromatic Hydrocarbons, Chlorobenzenes, and PCB's. Volume II covers Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Polychlorinated Dioxins, Dibenzofurans. Volume III covers Volatile Organic Chemicals (Hydrocarbons, Halogenated Hydrocarbons & Ethers. Volume IV covers Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Sulfur containing compounds (Alcohols, Aldehydes & Ketones, Phenolic Compounds, Carboxylic Acids, Esters, etc. While the series is not comprehensive, it contains invaluable info. If the compound you want is not listed, they suggest you consider the next closest one. Each book contains physical-chemical data for similarly structured groups of chemical substances which influences their fate in the environments of air, water, soils, sediments and their resident biota. Granted this is a compilation of existing data some of which is incorrectly reported, so one must take the "best fit" approach. These books provida a means of having comparison data readily at hand, helping to overcome the problems of identifying errors and estimating properties. This entire series is essential for all environmental scientists & engineers.

Very descriptive and detailed book. Excellent word choice!
I think that the author has really brought out the feeling of asian american literatures through his words. He shows much understanding of the subject and works well on describing it all. Very detailed and well thought out. His writing shows both sides of the writing including the good and the bad. Overall, this is an excellent book with much wisdom and knowledge.

Five Stars... For Showing How Desperate and Morbid We Are
This was the book that finally made me decide to leave the Catholic Church once and for all. How any intelligent human being can have the slightest respect for a God that supposedly gets kicks out of the senseless suffering of a child is beyond me. It's these bizarro concepts of God that give any kind of religion a bad name and confuse people far more than they ever help them. This book is a prime example of the utter morbidity and diseased spirituality of any religion that feeds off guilt, shame, and sado-masochistic impulse. After reading of how statues and communion wafers bleed and "sacred oils" run down the walls, one can only laugh in disbelief. Those are the corniest miracles, straight out of some lame freakshow. How the Audrey people can even believe in such a stupid concept of God is very sad. This book is very very sad. It typifies a desperation that should not present, and the parents of this child should be locked up. Pure nuts. The Catholic Church should be ashamed of itself in this day and age(or any age, for that matter). The poor little child was the victim of a senseless accident--that's all. It happens throughout the world every day to thousands, and people survive such tragedies with human love and perseverance, not with plastic statues that weep blood and olive oil. Further, what kind of people traipse to this girl's bedside, believing that God will take their illnesses and sufferings and load them "mystically" onto this child's body as a prelude to their miraculous healings? How demeaning! How selfish and pathetic and desperate can you get? This poor little kid is no saint, no mystic, and no wonderworker. She is a V-E-G-E-T-A-B-L-E. People that flock to her are deluded and need to volunteer their time at some viable social outreach program AND take some classes in reality. sad. This book was very disturbing. Our world needs to educate itself if humans are ever going to overcome the scourges of deception, ignorance, and emotional illness. People are way wrong to glorify false, third-rate parlor tricks & phenomenon instead of LOVE--the only miracle the world needs. What an insult to intelligence. What an insult to God.

Is Enlightenment Possible?: Dharmakirti and Rgyal Tshab Rje on Knowledge, Rebirth, No-Self and Liberation (Textual Studies and Translations in)
Published in Hardcover by Snow Lion Pubns (June, 1993)
Authors: Roger Jackson and Rgyal-Tshah Dar-Ma-Rin-Chen

Contains an excellent analysis on assessing truth claims
Prof. Jackson's commentary, which comprises nearly half the content, is an extremely well defined analysis on how to assess the truth claims made by Buddhism ( and any other religion ) from a Western philosophical framework. Prof. Jackson chooses to approach the topic using the classical western Correspondence theory of truth and this approach works to a large extent. Professor Jackson chose Correspondence theory as opposed to Pragmatism or Coherence theory because, he considered it to be less vulnerable to ( the western notion of ) relativism. This presents some ironic contradictions in areas where he attempts to "box" in the Mahayana notions of Relative and Absolute truth from a correspondence viewpoint, a viewpoint the Mahayana school would certainly consider a Relative truth. Nevertheless, it makes for a good debate and seems very much in the spirit of Buddhist scholasticism. The book stops short of actually attempting to answer the question "Is enlightenment Possible" as it should, since the answer lies somewhere between the debate of Buddhist truth claims and the practice of Buddhism. Those practitioners who are leery of the benefits of recursive debates will still find the translation of Dharmakirti's work quit enjoyable.

A rare primary historical source
Island Victory: The Battle Of Kwajalein Atoll by Brigadier General S.L.A. Marshall (1900-1977) is a rare primary historical source, written by at-the-time Lieutenant Colonel S. L. A. Marshall at the time of the deadly Pacific fight in World War II. Marshall was a veteran of WW I who would later serve in Korea and Vietnam and become a brigadier general. When the Seventh Infantry Division battled the Japanese across Kwajalein Atoll in February 1944, Marshall was given the official task of creating a written record of the battle. In order to be as accurate as possible, he brought front-line soldiers to a group interview and taped their conversations in order to get as clear an idea as possible. Written accounts of war simply do not get any closer to the actions and feelings of those were there. Island Victory is a highly recommended, "must-read" book for those who study eye-witness WW II accounts, and a core title contribution to World War II studies academic reference collections.

Author's Review
When I wrote this book on Jamaica Plain, MA
I was amazed at the rich history of this neighborhood of Boston that was once a part of Roxbury and originally known as the Jamaica End of town. With the Arnold Arboretum, and the Bussey Institute, Jamaica Plain became part of the Emerald Necklace and retains a bucolic and suburban setting. Hopefully, a text history of Jamaica Plain will be written shortly to augment this
photographic history.
