Load Bearing Fibre Composites

Covers structural composites, not just GRP.
Excellent introduction to this topic for engineers or material scientists. Requires some knowledge of math., such as basic vector equations and elementary calculus, but in general complex mathematics are eschewed. In contrast to most other texts, all fiber reinforced composites are covered with the notable exception of elastomers. The applications section is dated, but at least international, perhaps as the author is a European based in Canada. The other 11 chapters are as useful today as when they were written some 20 years ago.

Students and Professionals Look Elsewhere
This is the update to the ASCE 7-95. If you're looking to take the April PE 2002 exam or later, the ASCE 7-95 is one of the referenced codes, so you won't need it for the test, but eventually you'll need to update. If you use the ASCE 7-95 at all, you already know its best to keep up with current information.

I found this book very helpful in determining the most important issues in deciding how to make mutual funds work for you. The information is presented in a straight forward way and tries to present the pros and cons of different buying options. It certainly helps you feel informed enough to make a decision.

Key to the interoperability of Microsoft SQL Server 2000--its ability to exchange information with other database management systems and with client applications--is its support of Extensible Markup Language (XML). Regardless of whether you're a database administrator charged with designing and maintaining databases or a software developer who uses SQL Server at the back end of a multitiered application, you need to understand what XML is all about, and how SQL Server goes about reading and writing it. Professional SQL Server 2000 XML uses an approach typical of Wrox Press--liberal commentary interspersed with plenty of examples that build on one another--to help its readers learn about its subject.

This book was written by a team of authors, each of whom wrote a few chapters in his or her specialty area. Like any book written by several people, this one displays different writing styles throughout, but the effect is not striking if you use the book mainly as a reference. Each author typically takes on the capabilities of SQL Server and XML one at a time, explaining what each is all about before launching into examples (complete with code) that reveal the mechanisms at work. It's a lot of information to absorb, but the authors do a fine job of presenting it logically. Case studies present big projects that each employ several of SQL Server's XML capabilities. --David Wall

Topics covered: The XML capabilities of Microsoft SQL Server 2000, including the FOR XML clauses in Transact-SQL, the OpenXML specification, XDR and XSD schemas, templates, views, and updategrams.

All that glitters is not Rob Vieira
I had mistakenly thought that Wrox books were held to a higher standard. First getting a taste for them going through both of Rob Vieira's two SQL Server Programming books and regarding them as the finest technical books I've ever seen. However this Professional SQL Server 2000 XML is a disappointment. Part of the problem lies with having 12 different authors because it seems a bit jumpy. I think I'll really try to limit my future purchases to single source efforts. Also, no care was taken with the code examples that you can download from the Wrox website. The book shows the source but there is really no way of really matching the example to the source other than guessing the name. Often I've needed to open up all 15 or so files in the directory to realize that the particular example is not included. I'm picking my way through but it is not pleasant.

Not that good for .Net developers
It is a good book as far as explaning what SQL Server has to offer regarding XML capabilities but it should have covered the case studies fully with the .Net Framework. Also, it covers very good the IIS configuration, and how to manage XML Templates, XPath and Schemas. The book has a migration example from ASP to ASP.Net which does not cover ADO.Net. If you want a rich source on how to integrate SQLXML and the .Net Framework THIS IS NOT THE BOOK.

No other book covers SQL XML features like this one does
I looked at two other SQL Server 2000 XML books, but found this one to be the best - covering almost everything on SQL Server 2000 XML. Very well written, nice examples help understand the technology better. The chapter on Updategrams is very useful. I wanted to learn updategrams and this chapter covers it nicely to get started using them in production.

A european hijack that works well..
A story about a Hi-jack using an articulated truck and a family who are forced to do what the captives want but get their own back using the truckers network and the help of an old friend. Can be a little bit over the top but not far from the truth when it was written.... Another one for the film idustry to take note...

Perfect for first time campers
It was an informative book, but from the minute I opened the package I could see that it was meant for a younger or less mature reader. Not to say that it wasn't a helpful book. It does have some great tips for a child who is going to camp for the first time. I must admit that some of them were rather helpful to me. This book would be perfect for a child who was going to camp for the first time and, for that, I would highly recommend having.

An increasing number of shops are putting clustering and load-balancing technologies into place so as to provide high availability and an economic way to scale server capacity. The slender Server Load Balancing explains the state of the art in multiple-server technologies implemented at Layers 4 and 5 on the OSI network model. Though author Tony Bourke includes a fair bit of good information on configuring four commercial load-balancing solutions, the most valuable part of his work is his high-level discussions of how load balancing fits into a larger network environment, and his explanations of the relative merits of alternative approaches to the problem. A comparison of flat-based solutions with designs based on Network Address Translation (NAT) is part of this book's value; further appeal takes the form of dozens of network diagrams that document typical working solutions.

Bourke shows his familiarity with real-life design constraints by documenting various load-balancing solutions and pointing out what each can do for an organization--he points out that a host that implements a NAT-based balancing solution can double as a firewall, thereby saving some money that would have been required for a dedicated security device. He also provides introductory material on the competing solutions' administration interfaces, enabling implementers to get a head start on their work without wading into vendor documentation. --David Wall

Topics covered: The problems presented by requirements for high availability and failover, and the solutions that server load balancing can provide. In addition to general information on flat- and NAT-based load balancing solutions, this book documents strategies for implementing Alteon WebSystems, Cisco CSS, F5 BIG-IP, and Foundry ServerIron.

Average review score:

Dissappointing
I expected a lot more from this book that while admittedly was the first that covered the topic, but did not really explain things in detail. Half of the book is on configurations that you can download from vendor web sites and the real design issues are never really addressed. The author runs a web site on teh topic and also is a known expert so this made the book more dissappointing.
The first O'Reilly book I have ever regretted buying.

Only deals with the simple web server load balancing
This deals mainly the web based load balancing. This is the simplest solution since the sessions only last for ms. It has a good hands on approach to router configuration and network design but lacks hardcore application design that this topic deserves.

There is no discussion on complex systems which require sessions to last for days and how to distribute state between multiple servers. There is also no discussion on locking mechanisms, determining load, primary/backup determination, latency across WANs, distributed objects, DB failover, server synchronization, heartbeat implementations, shifting load for scheduled down time, or dynamic router configuration or alternative scheduling mechanism apart from round robin.

I think the title "Web Server Load Balancing" would be a more appropriate title and if that is what your goal is then this is the book for you.

Server Load Balancing by Tony Bourke
This publication is good for an quick introductory view of server load balancers. Users of load balancing products from certain manufacturers will benefit from the configuration options discussed in the final section of the book. For a more in-depth discussion, I would recommend Kopparapu's text "Load Balancing Servers, Firewalls, and Caches".
