Great Little Primer for Load Dispatchers
Part of my job with a large midwestern power company is to train load dispatchers. I'm constantly on the lookout for good material. Power System Operations by Miller is one of the best textbooks I've found to train non-degreed system operators. I used the first edition myself when I was a new load dispatcher, and I found it to be a great self-study guide.

One problem with the latest (third) edition, there are no answers provided for the questions at the end of the chapter. This is no problem if the book is used in a classroom as the instructor should be able to figure them out. But for self-study it is absolutely necessary for the publisher to provide the answers to the chapter tests. Also, there are a few typos in the chapter on reactive power that could be very misleading to students who are already struggling.

The book concentrates mainly on transmission but the first four chapters are useful for distribution dispatchers as well. They provide a good foundation for teaching system overview, AC fundamentals and reactive power. The chapters on protective relaying, while still giving a basic overview of the various schemes, are a bit dated because they don't cover some of the latest microprocessor-based relays that have been replacing the electro-mechanical ones over the past several years.

This is not the be-all and end-all for training system operators, but when combined with on-the-job training and other supplementary material it can help establish a solid training program.

Excellent developmental tool for Power System Operators
Power System Operation provides a well structured knowledge base and reference for the new and seasoned power system operator. It will serve as the foundational and theoretical basis for many of the experienced based knowledge that is passed from operator to operator. I would recommend that all power system operators be equipped with this book as must read material.

Too Heavy a Load: Black Women in Defense of Themselves, 1894-1994

In the last decade of the 1800s, lynching, mob violence, and segregation were well-entrenched responses to the American "race problem." Rising up in spirited defense, black women launched several regional organizations designed to defend and improve the rights of their race and their place within it. Yet the creed of betterment espoused by many black club women overlay sometimes-bitter commentary on black men for their failures as supporters and protectors. It also castigated lower-class "sisters" whose oft-caricatured mores cast a shadow on their own. And it had a rocky relationship with the broader American feminist movement: "Since they could not control white men, the source of most of their woes," historian Deborah Gray White says, "and since they believed that a race could rise no higher than its women, they had to begin that elevation with the women themselves." Too Heavy a Load swings on through the maelstrom of the civil rights movement, welfare advocacy, black nationalism, and feminism to more recent rifts, such as the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings. While doing so, it pieces together the engaging story of the backstage struggles in such early firebrand organizations as the National Association of Colored Women and the National Council of Negro Women. By including the clashes that strong personalities and different aims beget, White brings dimension to her story and provides strong illustration for her contention that "gender and race sameness [are] no guarantee of a beloved sisterhood." --Francesca Coltrera

She Makes the Load Lighter
A much needed critical study of the impact of Black women in white America. She explores the dimensions of race, class and gender. I recommend this book for any human being who cares about the response to subjugation of oppressed groups. It teaches how to deliver and redeem, and it provides hope for future movements.

I'm Glad Black Women are Standing Up 4 Themselves
Black females(African American, African, Caribbean, Afro-Latina)
have long been relegated to the margins by black men and whites(male and female)for so long. The gathering of black women in New England in 1994 was a good start, but they need to be proactive in defending black women consistantly, whether concerning the negative portrayals by the media and society. I think this book is a great start.

There are a lot of mistakes
I have already read the book and study many of the examples, my classmates and I have found many mistakes in the fourth edition, however the information contained and the subjects studied are very complete. I hope the next edition will have those examples solved in a correct way in order to clasify this book as an excellent text.

great text book
The book is a great textbook for students and practicing engineers. It covers pretty much all the steel topics. It has plenty of examples from ASD design to LRFD design. I think that out of all of the steel design books out there, this is the best.

The All IN ONE textbook
This book provides both the theory and practical applications needed to understand both LRFD and ASD Steel Design. The problems provided at the end of each chapter can be worked using either method. The example problems within the chapters provide valuable insight to procedures and techniques in solving problems. Having read many different books by Mr. Solman I have never been disappointed, and have always gained great knowledge from his books.

A "must laugh" read for anyone that's ever been a child.
If you've ever been lucky enough to meet or talk to the author, Vinnie Penn, you would understand that he has a unique style of humor, and it comes across in his book. Every inane quote that your mother ever said to you is in this book, but like a dictionary, Vinnie has a definition for them all, 20 years later you finally know what "MOM" was really saying.

Loads of Laughs
Mr. Penn keeps you laughing the whole way through. I could literally recall times when my mother said some of the things in the book. It's really good for a quick laugh, and lots of fun. Vinnie is great on the radio, and a great comic writer - his warped mind keeps you laughing.

Great laughs for anyone with a mother
A great quote/anecdote book for those who forgot how tough it is to be an adolescent. V. Penn hits all the ridiculous things mothers say to their children and what we think of them. It shows how funny and unprofound are mothers actually are. Penn is a local radio personality in New Haven, CT with just the funniest sense of humor. I would definately recommend this to anyone who was once 15 and had a mother.

Can't get around?
A striking look at how women's lack of access to mobility can be often discriminating in Asia and Africa. The book is a gathering of papers by various authors that shows common threads across vast underdeveloped populations, giving insight into an often overlooked viewpoint.

Separate and unequal. A phrase often associated with racial discrimination in the US. But one that springs to mind in the descriptions here, as applied to women and men having access to transport, which here refers to bicycles, buses, rickshaws and boats. Only rarely to cars.

A paper on Bangladesh describes how in an overwhelmingly rural Muslim area, societal mores often restrict women to the confines of their households. With concomitant deleterious effects on their abilities to earn cash incomes. Or even to get educated or see doctors. Which is not to say that such things do not happen, but that female participation rates are usually significantly lower than males'. Not all the blame can be laid at the door of Islam. Several articles outline similar occurrences in rural Hindu India and Christian Kenya.

the future of economic design
This book is one of only a few books that I own that I have been able to use as both a reference book and an enjoyable reading book (enjoyable to a structural engineer). It had many great examples on different ways to use composite design that I had not learned about in school. It also did this in a way that was useful at work. I have impemented many of the design principles from this book into my designs.

I would recommend this book to any structural, civil, or architectural engineer with a basic understanding of composite design.

Generally helpful, but very couple-oriented
This book is a pleasant, amusing, readable way of addressing the major issues that confront one at midlife: Am I living a life that accords with my values, ideals, and talents? If not, what specifically needs to be changed so I can achieve this? I found the "unpacking" metaphor especially appealing because (as an ardent traveler) I well know the real-life value of traveling light; it was rather astonishing to me to discover how much of a pack rat I've been in other aspects of my life! On the other hand, as a single person with many friends but no life partner (and no desire for one), I found that the authors' couple orientation rendered many of the exercises virtually useless for me. I agree that love is an important part of a full, satisfying life, but defining love as marriage, or the equivalent, seems ridiculously confining! Otherwise, the book is a pleasure to read, and most of the exercises gave me useful insights, so I recommend it with reservations.

Inspiring
"Repacking Your Bags" provides great pointers to me about how I can 'Live passionately for today & purposefully for tomorrow'. It is interestingly written, & has inspired me to align the four essential elements (relationship, work, place, purpose) of a happy life.

Truly one of the best books I've ever read.
This book is a must for every mid-lifer wondering where you've been and what direction you'd like to take for the second half of your life.

Alotta stuff missing entirely
I bought this book (rather skimpy size) and win2000 clustering (bigger) book to try and tackle several clusters I am to build in 2003 EE. Thanks GOD I bought the 2000 book also. Much of the usable information came from the 2000 book, not the 2003 book. The 2000 book goes right at 2000 clusters, and covers them in detail. This 2003 cluster book spends half the paper rehashing 2000 clusters and then begins showing some of the differences in 2003. Half of the smaller 2003 book is about 2000 clusters. If you do not read the whole book, in order, you cannot build a cluster in 2003. 2003 clustering seems more like an afterthought than the main concern. I also am trying to build IIS6 failover clusters. This book mentions IIS clusters, not at all, nowhere. In 2000 clusters, IIS is a checkoff. In 2003 there is nary any clear documentation on it anywhere, especially this book. While SQL seems to be covered in the 2003 book there seems to be an absence of other program types.
This book lacks any detail on many subjects and omits critical ones entirely.
If you want a technical reference, how to book, this is not it.
Shame. Its currently the only one out there for 2003 clusters.

Semi-accurate technical content, extremely poor writing.
This is without a doubt, the most poorly-written technical reference I've ever had the displeasure of reading. I agree with the other reviewer who picked out the numerous Windows 2003 Server errors - this book was rushed to press, and should have waited for the final release instead of being based on RC2.

I cannot believe a professional editor gave this book their stamp of approval. I have to take breaks every dozen or so pages, not because the concepts are too difficult, but because the author's akward sentences make my head ache.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the only book on the subject. I would stick to using whitepapers and web resources.

Outstanding Publication
In the sea of Windows Server 2003 titles surfacing, It is nice to see that at least one book, has come out by ONE author speaking from experience. I have noticed in the other books I have read, many others are having the same problems I am, the books are rushed out so 40 people write them and most of these folks have no production experience on the product so the books are pretty much a rehash of other stuff. They are rushed out, and we suffer. This book is nothing like that. The author has helped me understand exaclty what I wanted to know: how to plan a Windows 2003 upgrade from 2000 so that I can use my clusters and load balancing. Here are my favorite highlights about this book -> written from experience. You can tell the author works in the field as 90 percent of what is written comes from real life examples. You can tell that the author is not biased towards Microsoft technologies. The author tells you when he is working on something in production, he tells you when he is working in a lab. He clearly tells you the good and the bad. Another great thing is that this book is written on both the techie level and the managment level. I am a manager of a medium network, and I needed what was in this book which was tons of project planning guidance, what to buy, how to test it and so on. My last nice thing to say is that I loved how this book also took a focus on hardware for once. Too many authors write with no valid expeience so you miss all the hardware gotchas out there that people like me (in the trenches everyday and weekends) has to deal with. Not this one. You will know from when you start this book to when you put it down (thanks also that its only about 400 pages) how to design, cost estimate, implimenent, test and monitor your clusters. I loved the fact that I picked up tips on how to get free pre-sales support to help design my cluster with the vendor, it saved me some cash too on consulting which also helps. Ok, now here are the cons. Wish there was more of a focus on IIS. Another reviewer also mentioned this, so I will also say that as well because that would have put this book on my shelf forever. I agree and wish there was more on IIS. Other than that, the book gives you exaclty what it says it will, to help you plan and deploy a Windows 2003 cluster and load balanced solution and you will know how to upgrade your 2000 boxes without destroying them in the process. No stone is left unturned as the author makes certain you do not miss anything there is to know and there is even a section on how to back up your system so you dont kill it in the upgrade process.
