He Will NEVER Leave You Nor Forsake You
Pastor Robert J. Morgan of Nashville, Tennessee, author of 'On This Day' and 'Tiny Talks with God' uses the story of Moses and the Israelites, as an example to explain the ten (10) God-given strategies for difficult times. Remember when Moses and the Israelites were caught between "the devil (Pharoah) and the deep Red Sea?" God delivered them from the adversary and parted the Red Sea for thier escape. The same way we're overwhelmed by life's problems. God will deliver us, too. 'The Red Sea Rules' reveals even in the worst situation God will make a way. His promise and loving guidance will protect us through all the troubles, challenges and obstacles Satan puts in our way.
These ten (10) strategies will move you from fear to faith:
Rule 1. Realize that God means for you to be where you are.
Rule 2. Be more concerned for God's glory than for your relief.
Rule 3. Acknowledge your enemy, but keep your eyes on the Lord.
Rule 4. Pray.
Rule 5. Stay calm and confident, and give God time to work.
Rule 6. When unsure, just take the next logical step by faith.
Rule 7. Envision God's enveloping presence.
Rule 8. Trust God to deliver in His own unique way.
Rule 9. View your current crisis as a faith builder for the future.
Rule 10. Don't forget to praise Him.
No matter where you are in life's storm-east or west, up, down and under. God will make a way. No sea is deeper than the ocean of His Love. No army, force or enemy can overcome His throne of grace and His work in our lives. Just like the reality of the Red Sea, God will always make a way for His trusting children, even if He must split the sea to do it. Sometime time ago, a friend told me of this book of how much of an impact it made in their life. It was the only book that they would refer to in time of encouragement and hope. If you're going through a difficult time in your life I recommend this. It's my companion I can look to. A reminder that there is a God who loves and cares to make a future plan for all of us. Just trust Him.
Possibly the most encouraging book I have read in years
Great things in small packages. The book was recommended to me by a friend who stumbled across it while going through a very difficult time in his life -- he felt smack up against an uncrossable sea with an enemy in pursuit. God used the book to remind him of God's sovereignty and power in that situation. The life threatening situation became a life-changing opportunity. The same has now happened for me.
And all that in this tiny, easily digestible book. Awesome!

Powerful Wisdom for Confused PeopleThis is not merely a critique of many modern ways of "seeking God's will", but also a Biblical description of God's pattern of guidance for the believer. As his later chapter titles sum up, God's program for guidance includes (in order): Read your Bible, Develop a Heart for God, Seek Wise Counsel, Look for God's Providence, Does this Make Sense? and (rarely) Divine Intervention. Dr. Waltke has reminded us all that our Father is not one who hides His overall purpose for our lives, and the author does a great job of showing us how our loving Father guides and leads His children. Pick up a copy today - even if you aren't facing a "major decision" right now, it will still help you gain wisdom and direction in how to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
A Passionate Plea for Biblical SanityDr. Waltke bridges the gap between scholar and lay person without compromising truth. The first chapter he gives horrid examples of Christians who follow mis-guided adivce (we are all guilty of at least one example) adn later on in the book he shows the biblical counterpart. The Book is not very long, esay to read, and packed with dynamite. The Chapter on 'reading the bible' is worth the price of the book. Again those who read their bible, this will not come as a surprise. However, if you get your direaction from extreme emotions, this book will be a painful challenge. I really wanted to give the book 18 stars but that was not an option. By the book. Ask for as many free copies as you can and give them to your sorely sincere but misguided friends...
An excellent book for living for GodHis advice is amazingly simple and refreshingly sound. He lists steps, such as reading the Bible (to actually know God, and not some random verse), seeking the advice of Christian friends, etc. Essentially, his advice boils down to this: know God. Waltke wrote that the God who would give his own Son to save us, would not hide his will. We don't need to search for his will, as much as need to focus on knowing God.
This book was recommended to me by a friend who is the theological librarian at a divinity school. I was struggling with some choices and "Finding the Will of God" offered clear, biblical, and practical ideas. Waltke's style is easy to understand. The chapters are arranged in a logical sequence, and are short enough to read through easily. Most of all, the book really made me think about what it means to "know God." I would strongly recommend this book to any Christian, but especially to those who are concerned about making biblical decisions and living a life that pleases God.

One of the best books I've read in a long time! These are big questions and so essential to our Christian lives. There are LOTS of books on knowing God's will. I haven't read them all (but I've read a lot of Amazon reviews on them! The author talks about the different ways we can hear from God. Feeling confused because you've been praying for God to speak to you? How about looking around at your circumstances? God works through those too! I can't begin to summarize this book. You see, I'd checked it out from the public library, and over a period of weeks (yes, there were overdue fines - I should've just bought it!), I took voluminous notes on it. I didn't want to miss a single important point, so I've got it all written down. No doubt I'll be going back to those notes and again and again and eventually I'll buy my own copy of this book! So read this book - it's informative, easy-follow, and enjoyable to read. You might want to check out my other reviews of Christian books and music.

A Brilliant Guide to Christian Self-MasteryAccording to Maturin, Christian self-mastery is based on two spheres of knowledge: knowledge of God and of ourselves. "To know God is to know self" (pg. 6). He emphasizes in Chapter 1 our self-ignorance and how we can attain to self-knowledge, which he distinguished from self-analysis. We must also test our self-knowledge and learn to examine ourselves in the light of Christ. In Chapter 2, he clears up confusion regarding the nature of sin and points out that no human faculty is bad in itself but can be misdirected. "When we take these God-given powers and use them for an unworthy end, we sin" (pg. 41). We must turn our God-give powers to the good. He also states that the true principle of all Christian self-discipline is the same one that inspired Christ who, for the joy set before him, endured the cross. Discipline is a means to a glorious end, not an end in itself. Maturin also admonishes us to subdue our rebellious will. Here is where the reader must carefully study and compare chapters because throughout the remainder of the book, he attributes the will to the "law of the members" that is under the "law of habit" and the "law of sin". Chapter 3 distinguished between four laws as presented by the apostle Paul in the book of Romans: the law of the members which ties into the law of sin, and the law of the mind (the conscience) which ties into the law of the Spirit of Life that leads one to Christ. Chapter 4 introduces the law of habit and the law of perseverance. The former is tied to the body (the law of the members) whereas the latter, in the sanctification process, is tied to the soul (the law of the mind). Here it is emphasized that choosing the good grows easier with habit through perseverance. This chapter introduces the concept of character and explains how there are many forces that form it. Also, Maturin points out that one's character will last beyond this life. One critical point to remember here is what he calls the one measure of every character which is addressed by the following two-fold question: "Does the will strive after what the man believes to be right, or does it deliberately and consciously choose what he believes to be wrong?" He continues: "The answer that his life gives to these questions will enable us to form a very good estimate of his character." Although Maturin attributes the will to the law of the members, he is addressing the soul throughout the book which implies that the soul has a will of its own that either strives to do good or deliberately chooses what it believes to be wrong. The "will of the flesh" must be subdued by the will of the soul. In fact, in Chapter 7 we are told to submit our flesh to our spirit. Another area that will require careful study is how Maturin uses the terms flesh and spirit, on the one hand, and body and soul on the other. They are not necessarily synonymous, so one must look at the context to determine how these terms are used because he doesn't clearly define them. Chapter 5 is paramount. Here Maturin notes that our thoughts color our experience, but we can drive out bad thoughts with good ones and the mind can be trained to habitually choose certain thoughts. Controlling one's thoughts requires prudence. Also, the memory and imagination are important guides that should not be abused.
Chapter 6 introduces the concept of balance not only internally, within one's soul, but also externally among one's relationships. He also wisely points out the positive use of the emotions, including hate and anger. Chapter 7 discusses the physical body and the proper, balanced care of it and how it relates to one's resurrected body. He also says we should deny it whatever weakens our soul's union with God. Chapter 8 notes that mortification isn't an end in itself. He also points out the balance necessary to understanding how life and death relate to the Christian walk. We must be ready to "die" to rise to a higher state of life. Life progresses through death as we surrender to God's grace and Christ imparts divine life to us. Chapter 9 is the shortest one and reiterates the fact that life is the school of character and we need to persevere. This is a favorite book of mine because of it's loving exposition on the important subject of self-mastery.
Guide to self-disciplineThe insight and knowledge is with merit as a tool for living.
If one should wonder about the necessity for such a tool, the book offers the human physic at its norm and assists it to evaluate it to its best ability and self control.

She does a great job in providing examples and citing Biblical references. The book flowed easily from chapter to chapter and will capture the reader's attention. Very good book
Providence Explained
The fingerprints of GodSproul's purpose in writing this book is "to look at the question of providence, not only from a doctrinal viewpoint, but chiefly from an examination of concrete experiences of the flesh-and-blood people whose lives and struggles are recorded for us in sacred Scripture" (2). And this he does par excellence. You can almost feel Abraham's stomach churn as he ponders the immanent sacrifice of his beloved son Isaac, while splitting firewood for the altar early in the morning. You can almost hear the waves of the Nile lapping against the basket of bulrushes which contained the future leader of God's chosen people from slavery to the promised land. You can almost see Joseph's bloodied, mangled, technicolor coat as he wept in the presence of his brothers, compassionately telling them, "you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive" (Gen. 50:20). Our God is not "out there". . . He is right here.
Some of the areas of God's providence that this book touches on deal with God's involvement with His creation through miracles, the display of His glory, evil in the world, prayer, the flow of history and the history of redemption. At least one chapter is devoted to each of these topics which are very broad topics in and of themselves, but Sproul briefly touches on the involvement of God in each one of them displaying His love and purpose for His creation.
Sproul says that providence "is not merely that God looks at human affairs. The point is that He looks after human affairs. He not only watches us, He watches over us" (17). As far as the biblical teaching that all things that work together for good to those who love God is concerned, Sproul makes a clear distinction between the proximate, or soon occurring, and the ultimate. For example, we may experience things in our lives that are supremely good. These things are proximately and ultimately good. But we may also experience things that aren't good at all, but are for our good. Just like veggies to a kid, these things are proximately bad yet ultimately good. Sproul says that when Paul tells us that all things work together for good to those who love God, that he does not say that all things that happen are good things. What Paul is saying is that all things that happen to us, good and bad, are working together for our good. Ultimately it is good that these things happen to us (171).
One of the reasons why I love this book is because Sproul is such a ponderous writer and he writes with the views of history on the tip of his pen. He asks the hard questions and he's lets you search for the answers along with him. Sometimes the answers lead to more questions but never before learning something valuable about the providence and ways of Almighty God. If you've ever charged to the throne of God with the question, "Why?!", read this book. You'll gain invaluable insight into the purposes of God which will give you and incredible thirst for the "Unmoved Mover", as Aristotle called God. This book will bring you to your knees in tears at the feet of your creator God in awe as you realize his involvement in every detail of your life with the goals to make His desires yours and to change you into the likeness of His Son. Afterward, you'll be able to stand higher and firmer in the confidence that He is the sovereign Captain of your soul and the loving Master of your fate. I read this book at a time in my life that I would label "tragic" and it pointed me to the providential grace of God in a way that truly restored my soul to trust in my God. Sometimes He calms the storm . . . sometimes He calms the child.
