Living With Defined Contribution Pensions: Remaking Responsibility for Retirement

Review of Living with Defined Contribution Pensions
Reviewed in Journal of Financial Service Professionals - 01/01/2000:

Individuals serious about understanding the personal, corporate, and societal impacts of the shift toward defined contribution pensions should read Olivia Mitchell and Sylvester Schieber's Living with Defined Contribution Pensions: Remaking Responsibility for Retirement. The book is a compilation of the work of today's premier researchers on pensions. ...The articles in each part provide insight into many of the major issues ... along with a wealth of current data in support of the analysis. Examples include but are not limited to questions such as the following: What factors influence employees to contribute to plans? How financially literate are employees? Why do some employees spend, rather than roll over defined contribution pension amounts when they change jobs? What are the trends in defined contribution pension services? What policy options would spur more savings by employees? What is the future of the defined contribution revolution?

The book's major strength is its superb integration of corporate and personal financial planning, pension, and political issues. Understanding pension behaviors and trends requires a multidisciplinary approach. One particularly distinctive contribution of Mitchell and Schieber's editorial work is that the corporate issues have not been relegated to the background. Employer incentives are relevant to pension trends; to ignore business issues is to have a very incomplete picture. The articles in this book give the necessary attention to the nexus of corporate issues surrounding the core trend toward a shift to defined contribution plans both in the United States and abroad.

Don't expect to digest one of these articles in five minutes. This book is full of thought provoking, rigorous work aimed at those individuals with some background in economics and statistics. ...The incentives and policy implications are complex, and the analysis and discussion in this book reflect this challenge. But for those seriously interested in providing pension services, advising others about pensions, or understanding the trends for their own retirement needs, taking the time to read and comprehend the issues in Living with Defined Contributions Pensions: Remaking Responsibility for Retirement is definitely a worthwhile endeavor.

Best book on estate planning and asset protection
As an attorney, I've read many books on estate planning and asset protection. Protecting Your Financial Future is the best treatment of the subject I've seen. It's got powerful info that even financial and legal professionals will learn from, but it's easily understood by the layperson too.

One of the best aspects of the book is its writing style. It was actually enjoyable to read; intermingling strategies with anecdotes that illustrate principles.

Living trusts and other asset protection tools are often used incorrectly. The authors of Protecting Your Financial Future help readers avoid common pitfalls and build wealth with strategies all my clients should use. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a trust or thinks they will benefit from a trust. This book will give you the answers you need for the best possible plan.

Excellent for dealing with Tragedy, Trauma, & Loss
One again Tommy Tenney has come through. Right after the events of 9/11/01, the Lord prompted Tommy Tenney to write this book. Tommy then felt that the TBN broadcasting audience should have the first shot at it. TBN is one of mailing lists that I'm on through the ministry. So, in February of 2002, I got a copy of this book.

One of the weaknesses of many Christians is that they don't know what to do when extreme bad things happen (tragedy, trauma, loss, etc.). First, it's hard enough to deal with when those things happen in our own lives. But when they happen to others and they turn to us for advice & support, we're just as lost.

In this book, Tommy Tenney tells us what to do during those times of pain & heartbreak. What he explains can be used for us or for others when they go through tough times. As it was no surprise to me, he quotes from the Beautitudes and how they apply to us today. As Tommy said, "God is waiting to meet us on the way home from the funeral." In other words, God is there for us no matter what we're going through. Sometimes we feel as if we need more of him.

Kudos once again to Tommy Tenney. If you're going through something that's been difficult or already have, this book is for you. If you know someone that is going through a tough time or the aftermath of it, this book would be the perfect gift for them.

Trust Your Vibes: A Psychic's Secrets for Intuitive Living

Rational Approach to the Extrasensory
I have been a fan of Sonia Choquette's work for the last few years. Her warm, down-to-earth writing style makes the metaphysical aspect of life not only remarkable but absolutely believable.

This latest work of hers is no exception. She gives suggestions on how to open up your psychic sense in a graduated format - each exercise builds on the previous one. Yet, since these exercises can simultaneously stand on their own, you can take the parts of the book you are most comfortable with and forget the rest if you want to.

I have been involved in metaphysical studies for several years and own at least a hundred books in the subject matter - and this one ranks right up at the top for it's clear-cut suggestions and conversational tone. This and Ms. Choquette's other publications are well worth the cover prices, especially for people new to the topic.

Finally a Straightforward and Practical Book
I have never heard of Sonia before this book. I came across it in a bookstore and proceeded to read it over the following week. Sonia proves what probably the majority of people are thinking and feeling is real, Trust Your Vibes. This book has reassured me that what I am feeling are my vibes and that I should trust them. I am even learning how to activate my own intuitive channels(Go figure). For a person who reads a lot of books, this ranks right up there with one of the best. Thank you for writing Trust Your Vibes.

Raymond Ho is honest about the ups and downs he's experienced in life. In the final few pages he describes a situation where he trusted God and in the middle of his stand for what he thought was right, things did not turn out as he had anticipated, however in time a favorable resolution was reached. Ho has been a TV executive who has had the courage to question the leaders of the industry on their home turf.
Ho's book is for overcomers, for people who want to know how to experience victory over their circumstances.
He discusses how he has applied the teachings of Jesus to his life experiences. He writes "In order to have a more abundant life, we have to give life."
As former CEO of the Dream Center in Los Angeles, California he describes the miracle God performed when He "stretched our vision and planted an outrageous idea in our hearts." This book is full of good advice on how to develop a deeper relationship with God.

Get ready to get your feet wet!
I am only half-way through this book, and I would recommend it whole-heartedly. I had never read anything by this author before, but the title intrigued me. Well, this book is right on target. With wit and wisdom, Pastor Ortberg walks you through each area, and helps to address why we don't get out of our boats and trust the Lord more. His writing style is as easy to read as if he was sitting across the kitchen table from you. Each chapter has questions after it to further help you address what was discussed to your particular situation. There is even a "Bob-Prayer Challenge" issued by the author! (If you want to know what that is, you will have to read the book!) You will not regret getting this one - if you are serious about your walk with the Lord. It brings to light things that have held us all back from our destiny, our callings and generally fulfilling all that God has planned for us. But..... we will have to get out of the boat!

A Must for Water Walkers
With over 365 "fear not" verses in the Bible - one for everyday of the year - it is evident that God has something to say to us on the subject of fear.
In a passionate and engaging discussion of the biblical story of Matthew 14, Ortberg in his book If You Want to Walk on Water You Have to Get Out of the Boat, uses the example of Peter walking on the water to speak to the issues of how to face our fears and experience the power of God, as we trust Him to do things beyond what we could imagine.
Utilizing his skill as a storyteller, Ortberg weaves the truth of God's word into the fabric of our daily lives with humorous stories and clever insight. In fact don't be surprised if you often find yourself relating to quite a few of the stories and illustrations Ortberg uses to challenge his reader to get out of the boat and do what Jesus calls you to do even though you are very afraid.
Whatever your boat is, you will find this book delivers practical application and encouragement for the water-walker who chooses to step outside their comfort zone and trust God for great and mighty things. While this may sound grandiose, I believe Ortberg's approach is based in reality, noting that we should expect a few waves to slap us in the face, as he mentions, "failure comes with the territory - but so does the strong hand of Jesus pulling you up when the bottom drops out."
Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, this book is a must read. Not only will you meet Christ anew in the high sea where the footing is impossible, but you will be refreshed by truth of knowing that you are not alone in your journey.

What a terrific book
A very inspiring and good plan for making a sucessful life. I really enjoyed this book. If you want to use sound biblical teachings to encourage your everyday personal growth this is a must read.
