Kari has done it again!
Written with artistry and compassion, Kari writes as someone who has "been there, done that". I enjoyed the format of her new book: a verse of Scripture, then a short essay with lots of real-life illustrations, a brief prayer, and finally a quote from various quotable people. At the end of each section is a place for personal journalling. The format guarantees that we'll keep coming back for refreshment and encouragement. Kari has a unique gift in being able to relate to her readers on a personal level through her writing. She doesn't give glib, pat answers to the difficult questions in life but faces them realistically, offering hope and encouragement to trust again. This book is realistic, meaningful and worth reading (1) for women coping with any kind of loss and (2) for those who want to help others going through a difficult time.

Help for the Hurting
When life turns into a tornado, leaving us emotionally or physically wrecked, we don't
need pats on the back. What we do need is what Kari West offers in her devotional guide
for those experiencing losses of the heart, "Dare to Trust, Dare to Hope Again." People
reeling from loss have little patience or stamina for lengthy works. But West takes her
readers through twelve weeks of healing through gentle reminders of the Bible's comfort
and encouragement, tips for healthy grieving, and suggestions for "prayer pauses."
Though her personal "tornado" was an unwanted divorce, West includes stories from
people who experienced other types of losses. A helpful resource index in the back of the
book will connect readers with agencies specializing in chronic illnesses, sudden deaths,
death of a child, suicide, and grief support. The title of her last chapter, "God, grant me
courage to plant my hope in You," well summarizes her desire to plant hope among those
who have lost it. If you have experienced loss, this book is one you need to buy for
yourself. If people you love are hurting, giving them this book will communicate your
care and give them the tools to deal Biblically with their loss.

Do You Dare to Trust and Hope Again?
I opened Dare to Trust, Dare to Hope Again with high expectations-and I was not disappointed. The subtitle intrigued me, "Living with Losses of the Heart." Released in September 2001, this book by Kari West helps fill the void in our hearts after the events of 9-11 and puts loss in perspective. It is a must read for anyone wanting to move out of dark despair and into the daylight of hope.

Not all of us have been personally affected by catastrophic loss, yet if not us, we all know someone whose life has been touched by the dark side of loss and the out-of-control spiral that usually follows. West has written this book to focus on "... losses for which you were not responsible and over which you had little or no control."

The book is assembled into 12 sections of seven chapters, each two to three page in length. Every chapter begins and ends with a thought provoking verse or quote and each ends with a personalized prayer pause. Woven into its 256 pages are stories of real people who have struggled with life's lessons. The focus in on moments in our lives when we have the opportunity to reflect on pivotal, emotional, soul-searching, unavoidable, spirited, decisive, daring, elastic, courageous, glorious, nurturing, and mind-boggling moments that challenge us. Although we cannot change the challenges life throws at us, we can choose our direction and our response. By reading how others have dealt with loss, the reader is invited to reflect on how they would respond.

My only criticism of this book is it's labeled as a "women's" book on grief. Many men will overlook it and so most men will miss its healing power. I read the book and was touched by how it applied to me. I want to wave it in front of men and shout, "Read this! We deal with loss too."

Whether you buy Dare to Trust, Dare to Hope Again for yourself or for a friend, this book will inspire us with hope. If you or someone you know has been touched by loss or your heart is heavy with the pangs of despair or loneliness, the question becomes, "Do you dare to trust and hope again?

Planning your estate is one of the most complicated endeavors you'll ever undertake, yet its results are also the most far-reaching; after all, it will continue to affect those you care about long after you no longer can. So it's worth understanding all the options and ramifications, being personally involved, and doing it right. This Nolo Press guide to estate planning is an excellent source of information on the many various details and considerations that you need to take into account--such as children and probate, estate and gift taxes, second marriages, and a wide variety of trust options (charitable, generation-skipping, spendthrift, living, and educational, for starters). It delves into the factors that affect married people versus single, the laws regarding children, types of beneficiaries and wills, plus joint tenancy, life insurance, retirement benefits, taxes, and organ donation. Showing a number of sample estate plans, explaining what hiring a lawyer can do for you (and how to choose a good one), how to do your own research, and including a glossary of estate-planning terms, Clifford and Jordan give you the tools to decide for yourself how you want your estate disposed of--and to make sure that's what your legal documents reflect. --Stephanie Gold

Very Thorough
If you expect to have a $1,000,000+ estate and want to understand your tax saving options, this book is excellent. It's readable, usually clear, well organized & well indexed. It progresses into many advanced topics such as QTIP trusts, GSTT trusts, GRATs, GRUTs, GRITs, etc. and explains them in good detail, with examples. Includes some very useful state-by-state info.

You'll work much better with your lawyer if you read this book first.

I read a library copy, but then bought my own.

This book works well with Condon's "Beyond the Grave", which is much weaker on the nuts and bolts of estate tax planning but much better at getting you to think through the human (family conflict) side.

Great primer and resource, but get the companion software
BOTTOM LINE: Many people looking into getting an attorney to prepare a simple will have probably had sticker shock - several hundred dollars minimum for a competent attorney to prepare it. But as this book explains, do it yourself estate lawyering, while not prudent for complex situations, is clearly within the reach of those with even moderately complex situations and the patience to spend a leisurely weekend reading this book.

WHAT IT COVERS: This book is primarily a primer, explaining the foundations of estate planning including: an overview and whether you actually need to spend time reading the book and drafting estate docs, drafting a will, how to think about what assets will go to which family members and other beneficiaries, financial instruments such as brokerage accounts/bank accounts/life insurance and how they fit into wealth transfer, as well as powers of attorney and health care directives. What I like best about the book is that you know you are getting candid advice from someone not trying to bill you by the hour or sell you variable annuity life insurance. In my own area of expertise - finance - the fact that the author's opinion regarding life insurance is dead on (tax planning should be kept separate from investing strategies and as such variable annuities are complete bunk) gives me great comfort that I'm getting straight shooting advice in the rest of the book.

WHAT IT CAN BE USED FOR: The book can serve readers on two different levels. If you are going to get a lawyer anyway but are the type of person that wants to be educated when you talk to lawyers/accountants/brokers, this book will have you speaking the same language and is an easy read over the course of a weekend. If you want to prepare an estate plan yourself, this book serves as an ample resource to help create the necessary docs. The fill-in forms in the back are certainly capable of serving as the basis for your basic estate docs, but at the same time it may be more comforting to most people to have a seamless document that they are not penciling in blanks, which leads to my next point...

THINK ABOUT GETTING THE COMPANION SOFTWARE: This book is published by Nolo Press, a well-respected publisher of legal self-help books. They also publish a software title in conjunction with Quicken (makers of the financial planning software) called Quicken Lawyer which not only has an offline/online legal manual with much of the info included in this book, but its main function is to create a battery of estate documents for you through very simple step-by-step interviews - you answer the questions, it drafts the legalese, you print and execute it. I would almost recommend just getting the software instead b/c there is a decent offline/online manual included, but for those that really want to know the why behind what they're doing, get this book and the software. See my review on Quicken Lawyer Personal Deluxe for more info.

LIMITATIONS: The book readily admits there are situations that require an attorney and points out throughout the book which situations require it. In general, get an attorney if you expect to owe federal estate tax (threshold is currently estates over $1.5 mm, but rising rapidly through 2010), have an ex-wife or two, have kids that don't speak to each other, or other complex family dynamic.

A practical, comprehsive guide
I have read about 10 books on estate planning, and this is by far the clearest, best organized, and most comprehensive of the lot. The authors cover the issues of trusts, tax planning and tax reduction, and asset preservation. This is the book to start with, and is really as good as they get.

Seminary 101
Few Christians today even grasp the concept of waiting: the true meaning of the aspects of the word. This book clearly delinates the concept of why we wait, what we wait for, what it means to wait, and the blessing of waiting. You absolutely have to read it.

A Must For Every Born Again Saint
In 1991 I read this book and was so impressed that I sought permission from the publisher to use it as a text book in our night school. EVERYONE who has taken this course has commented on the spiritual impact it has made in their lives. Mr. Murray, along with a number of other men of that age, may not have been "giants" in doctrinal materials, but they were way ahead of many today in their spiritual devotion to God and His Word. I HIGHLY recommend that every saint read and reread this book. One of the saints of the past said, every good book ought to be read over many times.

Few books alter the life as much as this one does.
Andrew Murray is the master of devotional literature. In his devotional books he usually breaks a subject down into a month of daily lessons which require approximately 20-30 minutes of prayerful reading.

One of the most difficult lessons of the Christian life is how to patiently wait on God. In 1993 I devoted 30 minutes a day for one month to studying this book. This altered my life. Since then waiting on God has been one of the greatest joys in my life! It doesn't get any better than this!

Thank you, Andrew Murray and thank you, Jesus.

Review for: Does it pay to die?
I appreciate the direct, pertinent, and efficient information presented in this book. It is easy to read and understand and provides forms and examples for the reader's benefit. The information presented is timely for people who have worked hard to amass money, holdings, property , etc. to pass on to their heirs, therefore, preventing the government in the form of probate court, from taking your heirs' inheritance.

Protect Your Family; Protect Your Estate
Mike Monji's father died leaving an estate valued at $285,000. After the courts, the lawyers, the accountants and the system grabbed their parts, Mike received a check for $211.77. Yes, one-tenth of one percent of what his father wanted him to have. This travesty could have been avoided with a Living Trust.

Does it Pay to Die? is a financial wake-up call. The workbook format makes the process easy. By doing it yourself, you will save money and understand the structure of the trust. If you want an attorney to draft your living trust, the cost should be less than $1,000; money well spent.

Mike Monji's advice worked for me and it will work for you. Hold on to your money, protect your family and avoid probate. ...

A really beautiful book about God!
I highly recommend this book. It is a great book for understanding how much God loves His Children. I'd give it more stars if I could. It's a beautiful book!

In His Everlasting Arms
I was given this book a couple of weeks ago. It is simply wonderful! Gail MacDonald deals with everyday issues that have eternal rewards. I have been starting each day by reading a chapter. Her words give me insight into the powerful love and guidance of God. I find that I must resist the urge to read it cover to cover rather than to slowly savor the wisdom on each page. The author is a gifted writer who communicates her struggles and disappointments as well as her joyful journey and growth in her spiritual life.

I finally "got it!"
It seems like "living trusts" are a fad and I was somewhat cynical, but I also admit I didn't understand what they were. The book gave me the info I needed to work intelligently with a lawyer, which I really needed to do. Before I read the book I thought I might go to one of those do it yourself paralegals, which would have been a HUGE mistake. I took my knowledge and shared it with everyone in my family and now we are all very pleased that we've done estate planning that really takes care of all of our concerns.

Clears the fog and makes decision making seem easy.
Other books on subject were dense, overkill. This one is easy to read and very clear. Removes intimidation and preps you to make choices, talk with lawyer intelligently. Great diagrams and illustrations. Fast read.

Trusting God
Published in Hardcover by Word Publishing (September, 1989)
Author: Jerry Bridges
Amazon base price: $13.95
Used price: $5.25
Average review score:

You MUST read this book if you are hurting
If you are currently in the midst of deep emotional pain and turmoil in your life, as I am, this book is absolutely essential. I know firsthand what it means to love God but be sure He has abandoned you in the middle of a terrible time. Be assured, He has not, but when you are suffering, it is unbelievably difficult sometimes to trust Him. Where is He? Why doesn't He answer our prayers, if He loves us so much? This book answers that question. It is written along the same lines as Disappointment With God (another great book) by Philip Yancey, but this one goes much more in depth and explains things in a much clearer way, in my opinion, especially for one who is reading it with a mind that is clouded by hurt and pain. Don't turn away from God-- hold on!! He will not leave you with more than you can bear, if you turn to Him to help you bear it. Jerry Bridges shows you how to do this in Trusting God Even When Life Hurts. A truly great and healing book.

An Encouraging Word...
This is - BY FAR - the best book that I have EVER read on the subject of how to deal with suffering. Mr. Bridges does not simply dwell on the subject of the sovereignty of God, and spend the rest of the book telling people who are suffering that they should just "suck it up" and trust God blindly. The first 7 chapters of the book do deal with the sovereignty of God. But Mr. Bridges goes a step further in the last 7 chapters of the book: he talks about the will of God and the love of God. This book has been such an encouragement to me through some very difficult times. It is a book I highly recommend...and loan out on a very regular basis!

Easy reading but heavy theology
This is a great book if you are grappling with man's responsibility vs. God's soreignty. The author writes well, always showing the basis of his thoughts based on scripture. That is the power of this book. Personally I don't think you could get much from this book if you were in the midst of a personal crisis. I think you should read this book NOW, while things are calm. That way you can store up the scriptures (and concepts) in your heart, and be prepared, for any storms that may come in the future. Get out your yellow highlighter; you will want to highlight this book a lot.

A Book I Can't Finish
I have been reading this book for a while, but I cannot finish it because I keep starting over from the beginning. Every chapter makes me feel great about God's love for us. It is my first Max Lucado book, but not my last. I recommend for everyone especially new Christians it brings Jesus to our neighborhood.

Best Savored Slowly
Ok, I repent. I have never read a Max Lucado book before. Just about everyone I know has, but I found excuse after excuse to avoid reading them. In do not know why. Maybe I figured that I had more important, or more entertaining reading to do. But the truth be told, I have never been a big fan of devotional books. But then I received this book as a birthday present from two dear friends in my church and what a blessing it has been.

Lucado is a master of the English language. You will not find more beautiful prose written anywhere. It is simply beautiful. Lucado takes a look at the life of Christ as if Christ is your neighbor next door. Thus, the book has a contemporary feeling. We are not reading about something that happened in ancient times, but we are learning how the living Christ is working in the world around us. Not only is this a well-written book, it is an insightful book as well. The author has a way of looking at well know verses in a fresh new way. And yes, he even gave me insight to Scripture that I had overlooked. Written in short chapters, it lends itself to being read devotionally- one chapter per day. You cannot rush Lacado. It is not a quick read. It is too insightful, to beautiful to speed-read. This is one good book.

Great Reading
Having read several of Max's books I can tell you that he has done it again here. He has taken everyday things and turned them into a focus on the Love of Jesus and how we can use those gifts that we have all been given. Great reading with great insights.

Trust Me - Keys to building trust in people
Wayne Hastings and Ron Potter have written an inspirational book that provides the key principles we all need to guide us in our personal and business lives. It is a book to be kept close at hand to keep our thinking and actions on the path of a principle based life. The real life stories and the opportunity provided to reflect after each chapter with thought provoking questions about ourselves and how we interact with others helps teach us how to be leaders others can trust.

Just right for today's leaders
If you read only one book on leadership in 2004, I would urge you to read "Trust Me" - "Developing a Leadership Style People Will Follow", co-authored by a friend and colleague of mine, Ron Potter. Ron embodies the principles he and his co-author Wayne Hastings write about. If you are leading a group of individuals and think you have achieved a 10 on the scale of Trust. Think again. My two favorite chapters are: "Keeping the Band in Tune" and "Dream Team". Tune into this refreshing book with simple, practical ideas that can be utilized in any type of business. What an opportunity to do some introspective thinking on how effective your leadership style really is on a day to day, person to person basis. This truly is a book and a message for its time. Just right for today's leaders.

Leadership that lasts
Trust Me is a book for leaders who want their influence to last. Many people can achieve immediate success, but lasting and fulfilling success can only be found with timeless truths as explained in this book by Wayne Hastings and Ron Potter. Knowing Ron personally, I have seen him live out these life lessons on leadership in a way that bears much fruit for his professional, personal, and spiritual life. I especially appreciated the chapters on development and focus. Trust me is an excellent book that will build other's trust in your leadership goals and abilities.
