Amazing.Using brilliantly colored photographs and simplistic scientific words, this book introduces children to the amazing life cycle of a butterfly. The last page of the book includes valuable information that will help teachers, parents, and other adults in answering children's questions.

Classic Studies in Psychology

Amazon base price: $9.95

Excellent overviewAn excellent overview of, as the title says, "classic studies in psychology". Covers experiments in many different areas (conditioning, development, memory, social psychology) and hits the "high notes" in each area: Pavlov's classical conditioning, Watson's "Little Albert" experiment, Piaget's cognitive development, Milgram's obedience experiment, and others. A great resource for instructors and students of experimental psychology.

Fire in the Forest: A Cycle of Growth and Renewal
Published in Hardcover by Marcel Dekker (September, 1994)
Amazon base price: $16.00
Average review score:

Good book about how fire affects forests. We are planning a trip to Yellowstone and this book has gotten me excited to see the different kinds of forests that exist throughout the park. Not only does the book cover how fire affects forests, but how time affects forests -- by looking at the types of growth in a forest you can tell how old it is (i.e. how long it's been since the last major fire). Fascinating. The only slight critique I have is that I wish the book were longer -- it's a good length for upper elementary and middle school children, but high schoolers and adults will want more.

Fascinating details on life cycle of this complex creature. This book tells the story of the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. At first glance the cover and beautiful photography may suggest this is a children's book. But the detailed design descriptions are more appropriate for adults. In fact I was never able to get through this book until after I had read a children's book by the same author James Poirer, "The Life and Adventures of Monica Monarch". The two complement each other well.

All About A Bird. This book pictures the various stages of development of a robin, from the speckled-blue eggs that they hatch from to the adult birds they eventually grow. The book is short, but the pictures are quite vivid and spark interest from youngsters. There is a section at the very end of the book to help teachers, parents, and other adults help teach and explain more to curious minds.

Well, 3.5 stars, rounded up..."Gates of Mitzvah" proves that Reform Jews were talking about mitzvot long before the "Pittsburgh Principles" were written. This book is a nice introduction and reference volume outlining the most common mitzvot in the Jewish lifecycle, such as brit, bar mitzvah, putting up a mezzuzah, get, etc. The most interesting reading comes at the end of the book, where several essays are presented which discuss the role of mitzvot in the lives of liberal Jews. This is only an introductory volume of course, and anyone who wants the mitzvot to play a more important role in their lives will quickly outgrow it.
The chapter organization is good and the review questions at the end of each chapter are very useful in the course. My students are college juniors and seniors, and they find it easy to read.
I tend to avoid texts that don't do an adequate job of presenting research. This text has a sound introduction to current research in the field, and is an excellent choice for me.
Instructors looking for a good presentation of work on cognition in Adulthood will find the associated chapters useful as both a text and reference material to keep on hand for other courses, such as a 'Lifespan Psychology' course.
The new edition includes more on women, cross-cultural aging, personality and clinical aspects of aging, grandparenting, as well as much new material on aging and adaptation.
I would certainly recommend this book for any solid college level course on Adulthood.
