Excellent Book
Very helpful and well written. Thanks for a great book.

Excellent
.
This is the most advanced book I have seen on licensing. Until I read this book, I hadn't fully appreciated the extent to which licensing is a business.

Any inventor of technology, from low-tech to high-tech, could apply the business strategies laid out in this book. I am not aware of any book that adds so much to the licensing field. This author really has something new to contribute, and does so in plain language.

Although this book is written for Canadian innovators, the strategies it lays out apply to innovation in any country. The same is true of the strategies it lays out on global transfer pricing, something I had never considered in the business of technology licensing.

It is logical, though, that this book originates in Canada because almost half of Canada's GDP is generated globally (much higher than most other countries) and therefore global licensing and transfer pricing are particularly important to Canadians and to Canada's role in the new economy.

I would buy this book just for the analysis of the business of licensing, or just for the analysis of transfer pricing. As a Canadian reader, I would also buy this book just for the final chapter, which exposes the true nature of Canada's international tax law regime.

Worth the Investment
Considering the cost of a good IP lawyer, this book is well worth it.

It is written in business terms and covers many important topics. It was especially useful to see what is common in agreements, what is desired, hard to get, and common resolution approaches.

I found it very useful in developing a long term relationship with a company interested in licensing technology from my company. It is especially good for business people (like myself) who are need to understand the important parts of a licensing agreement during business discussions.

The sample agreement at the end of the book alone is worth the price. I adapted it for our use and know a lawyer starting from scratch would have invested many hours to develop it.

I can not stress enough how valuable the content is in this book for anyone signing, or composing, a software contract. I guarantee this book will become "the industry standard" on the subject.

Some thoughts from a competing author
Dr. Razgaitis has tackled an area that contains the most difficult question facing professionals and intellectual property owners - how to value and price embryonic technology.

In recent years many have attempted to educate us on the subject of valuing intellectual property. Complex financial theories and spread-sheet models emerged, especially during the e-business bubble as some strove to explain the unexplainable valuations of enterprises whose only assets were intangible. Dr. Razgaitis obviously knows and understands the theories, but doesn't let the reader escape into flights of fancy, instead bringing one back to earth gently, sometimes with humor, sometimes with real-life anecdotes.

This book allows the reader to seek information to a depth that he or she wishes. As an example, the Monte Carlo technique is presented in all its complexity for those willing and able to study it. At the same time, mathematically challenged readers can still come away with an understanding of what is going on. The author is skilled in clearly explaining complexities and the many well designed charts and tables greatly assist the reader.

These are just some of the features that set this book apart and give it a strong practical value to all of those who create and exploit technology assets, and to those who advise them. Anyone in those roles should have this book within easy reach.

Great Teaching Tool
Effective and very thorough in its detail

Jewel in the Crown of Technology Valuation Reference Books
Of all the technology valuation reference books I have read, this one is by far the best. Richard has compiled and condensed the most useful valuation techniques/methods into his book, and it's easy reading. However, if you're just looking for one tried and true, quick and dirty recipe to value all technologies in all markets and in all business conditions you'll be disappointed. Richard has provided an excellent collection of methods, however unlike many authors, he writes for the business professional and thus he requires the reader to use professional judgment, coupled with good business intelligence (information) to select and then apply the methodologies. Basically, there are rarely easy and simple answers when valuating technologies, however Richard's book makes it a heck of a lot easier and the results provide a more credible foundation for commencing valuation negotiations.

Engaging Book for a Technical Subject
I enjoyed reading Dr. Razgaitis book on the Early -Stage Technologies. It covered the different basic approaches to valuation. I specifically liked his analysis of the 25% rule and the Monte Carlo method for valuations. These two methods are on opposite ends of the difficulty spectrum of valuations. The details mentioned in those two methods has allowed me to strengthen the valuation reports that we do at Inavisis, Inc.

I also liked Chapter five which covers the Rating/ranking method to determine valuation. Although the chapter was general in nature, it outlined the basic principles that appraisal professional use in their valuation report and in litigation environment to support their analysis.

I use the stories outlined in the book in many of my valuation training courses. Dr. Razgaitis book is a must for the libraries of appraisal professional.

What to do when license is in hand
This book is heavy on the legal information (it's from Nolo Press) but light on what to do to get an invention licensed. Has good legal advice which would be a use to any invcentor who has a deal ready to go, but not much help on evaluating the proct for license or how to get a licenseing deal to come about. Would recommend this book only for those who have already made prototypes, contacted licensees, and are ready to start writing contracts - then get this useful book.

Legal Toolkit
I felt that this book provided a firm clear basis to write a contract to license your invention. I have to agree that it did little but rehash the usual ways of marketing your invention. Perhaps the book should have be titled: Write a good contract for licensing your invention.

I thought this book took you nicely through each step in the licensing process explain your legal rights and the legal rights of others in detail. I enjoyed the book and thought it was easy to read despite covering alot of legalese.

Everything you need to know about the licensing process
"Take Your Great Idea to Market With a Solid Legal Agreement" promises this new book. The promise is fulfilled with plenty of solid details about the licensing process. This is not about venturing or bringing your own invention to market, but about protecting your property rights while licensing the invention. This would include inventors who work for companies that may want to license their work.

Franchising & Licensing: Two Ways to Build Your Business

The US's guide to franchising
This book is obviously aimed at the US domestic market. State by state it covers laws and practices. The sales girl said that UK franchising law was based on US law, maybe she was right. It is usefull to the UK francisor/franchisee, insofar as it gives excellent advice and working examples. The majority of its 400 pages are only useful between LA and New York, however, anyone planning to enter into a franchising agreement should imho have read this, and have it on his (or her) shelves.

Excellent book for business consultants in franchising
Excellent for those who are business consultants in franchising. Mr. Sherman has covered the major topics that must be taken in consideration when a business is going to be offered as franchise, in a well-developed book with very good legal advice.

Great guide to the licensing process
This book is very educational about how to go about the licensing process. It's very easy reading, not the technical boring style. The included software is a major plus! You can customize the included licensing contracts.

Like Your Own Licensing Attorney in a Book!
With this one creative work, Attorney Richard Stim has given the inventor lightening power [like the art on the cover shows] in understanding what it takes to license an invention. It's easy to grasp because it's written in layman's terms. He has graphs on the licensing process, with forms in the back of the book as well sample agreements. He's given the inventor the tools and formats for licensing agreements, non-disclosure agreements, option agreements, contract work, agency letters, etc. And, all these agreements are also on a disk which is included with the book. He's outdone himself. I can't say enough about what Richard has put into this excellent licensing course for the inventor. I believe that it not only helps the independent novice inventor, but is also a good reference for those who consider themselves experts. Even attorneys should find this an excellent addition to their legal library. I recommend it highly. Accolades to Richard.

More theoretical than practical.
This book contains basic information about licensing but does not provide enough practical examples on using it in different situations.

not enough for educational rate students

Great Book to Start With!
Based upon the reviews here I didn't spring for this book but obtained it through interlibrary loan. I'm glad I didn't miss it!
As a potential licensor I found this book to go into exactly the amount of depth I need to understand licensing and to get started.
The section of protecting an idea and specifically what to if a company won't sign a non-disclosre is worth the cost of the book alone. Coming from publishing (I have 26 books out) this isn't an issue, but with designs I was concerned. Now I know how to deal with it.
Bottom line, this book is well worth the low Amazon price!
