A Great Resource for the First Year Principal
This has been a required book in my graduate course in elementary school leadership for the past two years. I think that it gives a well-developed background in the major issues of the principalship and practical tips for the beginning principal. Students who have completed the course and gone on to leadership positions feel that this was a very practical guide that helped them in their work. As a bonus, students within the class felt that inclusion of this book added relevance to their academic study. It is clear that Bergman has written a very practitioner oriented text. I plan to continue using this book as long as it is available.

Rookies need this book...
New school administrators, as well as veterans, will find this book useful. The book comes with a CD and is an incredible resource for elementary principals. The CD alone was worth the price. Administrators who are revising and restructuring their schools will have a format to build on in areas ranging from technology and internet use policy to long-range planning.

Survival Kit is A Life Saver
The Survival Kit for the Elementary School Principal is full of practical advice, common sense solutions, and scores of forms and letters that are of instant use to the busy practitioner.

The resources included are true "time savers" and reflect the seasoned and reasoned practice of a wise, politically astute elementary principal. Tips and techniques for creating a school vision and building and sustaining morale-- all-the-while developing a positive school culture are offered.

The accompanying CD is a true bonus. I simply inserted the CD, downloaded the included Acrobat Reader, and voila, I had within my reach, ready for adaptation, many useful, relevant, and well-written forms, checklists, and letters.

Must have book
I've used the 1979 version for many years. It is a must have book for any administrator. I am buying the 1990 version only because my last copy (I started with 4) was "borrowed" and never returned. It saves time in doing those routine and letters that we all do from time to time.

Very good guide book for teacher development
This is a VERY GOOD book for anyone interested in Teacher develoment. It has guidelines on how to start teacher development in schools. It also includes real cases of how to organize schools for better teacher professional development. These examples and guidelines help me to reflect my own teaching and re-examine educational instutiutes and policy in a more systematic and constructive way. It is good for individual development, teachers' book-club, or as a textbook for coureses of teaching and education. You definitely can get something out of it!

Peking Letter: A Novel of China's Civil War

In his author's note, Seymour Topping sets forth the purpose of The Peking Letter: "I offer this novel as an entertainment, yet I dare to hope that its historical perspectives may also help to make China more understandable." One's heart sinks. It's like being asked to eat tofu cheesecake--tastes good, and it's good for you, too! So it comes as a pleasant surprise to find that The Peking Letter is much more than instruction wrapped in potboiler garb. Set in Beijing during the Chinese Civil War, Topping's thriller brings that city vividly to life, down to the last details of food, dress, economics, and philosophy. Few novelists are more qualified to write about this era than Topping, who covered the war for the Associated Press. While most of his characters are imaginary, the ideological battles they engage in are not, and in illuminating the conflicting ideas that beset the city in the late 1940s, Topping does much to make China's current struggles with democracy and capitalism more ... well, understandable.

His hero is Eric Jensen, child of missionaries and passionate student of Taoism and Chinese art. Though he cares more for his studies--and for women and wine--than for politics, the CIA enlists his help in monitoring the city's growing unrest. Meanwhile, Jensen meets Lilian, a beautiful Chinese woman, and finds himself acting as a courier for the Communists, carrying crucial details of negotiations for the Nationalist surrender. Of course, no spy--not even a lusty, Taoist, red-haired foreign devil--can serve two masters, and Jensen finds himself pursued on all sides as he tries to save the woman he loves. Topping handles the twists and turns of this plot with consummate skill, and though he's no groundbreaking stylist, he writes a solid journalist's prose. His characters don't fare quite as well; both Jensen and Lilian come up somewhat short in the psychological-nuance department. But there is ample precedent for such simplicity within this genre, and The Peking Letter enjoys the advantage of its fundamental intelligence. Though the novel wears its historical credentials lightly, it is nonetheless the work of a man who understands China--and its pull on foreigners--better than many historians. --Mary Park

I've heard of 'B' movies; are there 'B' novels?
Mr. Topping has found the perfect setting and period for a China novel; it's hard to imagine a more romantic and exciting time in recent Chinese history. That's why I'm all the more disappointed in his effort, which is almost, but not quite, a flop. His grasp of history is spot on. That is to be expected--he was there at the time. But the book's characters are so superficial and shallow as to cause the reader near complete despair. His dialogue is so cheesy that for just a moment I thought I had nodded off into an old wartime drama on the AMC channel. For those of you who are students of China, the book's protagonist will certainly remind you of people you may have run across. You know the ones--those with a exoticized, romanticized westerner fantasy of a China that never existed. Those people never last long in the field. Unfortunately, that is precisely who Mr. Topping gives us as his China 'hand'. And of course, the gorgeous educated, cultured native girls all swoon for him.

Mr. Topping lived in China during a very tumultuous time, and I hope one day he will write his memoirs of the period. His real-life China story certainly would make infinitely better reading than what he has offered here.

In sum, the book is a perfect example of a 'plane book', (or 'train book' if you are afraid of air travel). It should see you nicely to your destination, but then you will want to pass it on.

enjoyable and a fast read.........
I picked up this book after having just finished one of Amy Tan's novels that also depicts China at about the same time period. I would say the historical backdrop and political setting in this novel was better executed than the emotional depth of the characters (the description of which seemed a bit labored to me). In Tan's book, I was drawn into the characters' experiences, while for this novel, I felt more of an outside observer. It was still enjoyable, though.
The ending makes me hope for a sequel..........

Great history, not so great dialog
I was looking forward to reading this book for quite some time before I bought it. The story and the history was excellent; the descriptions vivid. I could hardly put it down. But, Mr. Topping is a newspaper man, and his journalistic style sometimes came through in the dialog between characters, and often sounded like he was quoting an interviewee.

All in all, it is a definite must have for any one with an interest in Chinese history and fiction.

This is NOT a Dean Koontz title!
I don't know how this book got linked to Dean Koontz, but it is NOT written by him. I ordered it, and eventually returned it because there is absolutely no reason to suspect that he had anything to do with it. If you are trying to be a Dean Koontz completist, save the money you would have errantly spent on this and buy one of HIS books. On the other hand, if you'd like to know how to steam open your neighbor's mail, then this book is for you!
