Bitter Lemons

Inspirational, funny, and sad
This book, along with a couple by Henry Miller and a few others of Durrell's, was responsible for causing my husband and me to leave life and jobs in LA and move to Greece for nearly a year. Bitter Lemons is part memoir, part political commentary, part travel writing, and part philosophy. It's the story of Durrell's fairly brief stay on the island of Cyprus, conflict between Greeks and Turks, impending world war, buying a house and trying to settle into a unique niche of the world. It's a book about Life and all its myriad difficulties.
Tip-top - and wonderful writing. It's one of those books whose memory will stay with me always.

Really good reading, great characters!
Excellent plot and great characters with cleavor plots and story lines. "Indian's Don't Cry" is terrific for anyone interested in modern day American Indians as it debunks the stereotypes and movie Westerns. It's fast-moving and hard to put down once one begins reading. I recommend it!!

You must see the invisible to do the impossible
I was honored to hear a talk by this gentle, humorous man 7/15/98 at the INTA Conference in Arizona. He genuinely bubbles with enthusiasm and positive energy. It was a joy to read this book and learn how he turns events around to his satisfaction, depending solely upon God. Two of his powerful statements are, "Failure is Someone Else's Opinion of the Outcome of a Situation," and "Power Is In Being, Not in Doing." Wally Amos depends, he says, on spiritual laws that work - he doesn't have to understand them - they just work. He tells us how to benefit from adversity and of the many relationship problems that occur and how to handle them. I enjoyed every minute reading this book and highly recommend it.

Another winner from Ms Duncker
This book of short stories is wonderfully written, most enjoyable and more accessable than the previous Hallucinating Foucault. An extra bonus is that one of the most delightful stories has been expanded into her next novel, The Doctor. A very promising author.

The Wit of Sydney Smith
Twelve Miles From a Lemon (Selected writings and sayings of author Sydney Smith) gives real meaning to the phrase "rapier wit". Smith adds a gentle touch to wit. I purchased this book in the name of my two year old grand-daughter, Sydney Smith who is herself a little "wit". My insights as to the similarities of the Sydneys proved to be both true and delightful. Reverend Sydney Smith was a walking wit. His spontaneous sayings are treasures. The one that led me to him via Amazon was printed on a teabag: "I am glad I was not born before tea." A true Englishman! Last June my daughter and I took our Sydney to London and then to Bath. This book described Reverend Smith's life and moves to various parts of England and France. His vacation spot was Bath! His close friend was Earl Grey (for you tea-drinkers). The book is delightful, even though it plods in parts. Reverend Smith was a visionary, compassionate and intelligent. This selection of writings portrays a true feeling of his times (early 1800s), as well as insights of humor within the church. It will definitely make any Anglophile chuckle!

THIS BOOK IS THE SWEETIST LEMON EVER:)
THE TROUBLE WITH LEMONS

I read the book "The Trouble with Lemons" and this is a great book. I liked it because of the climax it is great. Tyler is the main character in this story. Tyler moves around to a lot of different schools. He is a boy in Junior high school and he always gets into fights. One night, Tyler and his friends went swimming at the quarry. While they are there, Tyler swims into a dead body. The body the he swims into is the school janitor. The mystery of the story is that no one knows who killed him. You will enjoy the excitement with the characters and you will not be able to keep your eyes off this book.

This is not a sour Lemon!
The book Trouble with the Lemons was pretty good. I thought that it looked like a horrible book and was dreading to have to read it. But I enjoyed. It was a neat book to read and I would recommend you try it. The kid seems down to earth and everything. He made me feel like I had it good. His mom and older brother are famous movie stars, and his father died in a plane crash. The main character Tyler and his friend were swimming in the quarry and found a body. It was the one of BooBoo Anderson the school janitor. It is a murder mystery and if you like books with a lot action going on I really think you should try this book.

The Trouble With Lemons- Awesome!!!!
I can't tell you how much I loved this book! It makes a great read for anybody, but it applies mostly to teenagers. There were a number of reasons why I thought this book was so good. First, the story really teaches you a lot of lessons. The main character, Tyler, thinks he is a "failure" and has so many problems, but he really has everything to be happy about. This really relates well with teenagers because a lot of them may face similar problems on the road of growing up.
Also, I loved this book because it kept me hooked so well. You might suspect that it is boring since I told you it was about a boy just facing life's difficulties, but it is also mixed with a mystery which keeps you reading. I hope you choose this book for your next read!

This was an exciting book!
I'd like to tell you two reasons why I like this book. First it was exciting but realistic. It had girls just like me. The setting was during World War II and I like learning about this war. I enjoyed this book. I would recomend this book to 4th and 5th graders.

Salted Lemons....
Salted Lemons is a very cool book. Darby is a young girl from Washington D.C. who moves to Atlanta, Georgia during the beginning of World War 2. One of the first friends she made there was Yoko, the girl across the street. Yoko introduces Darby to eating lemons with salt, the big sycamore tree in the back yard, and the basket swing where they sit reading the Bible. When summer ends, Darby has to go to school and finds it strange when her classmates don't pay any attention to planes flying overhead and they don't even act as if a war is going on! In Washington D.C., they had air raid drills every month, collected tin cans and string, and bought savings stamps at the end of the week. Here, they only pray at church for the lost soldiers. Darby really wants to be accepted by the other children, who consider her a "Yankee".

After a few days of school, the other people in her class notice her hanging out with Yoko and start to call her names until her father explained that Yoko was Japanese. Darby starts to become frightened of Yoko and her family and starts making exuses not to go play with her. Yoko finally explains that they are not spies, or the ememy. Yoko was born in Atlanta but her heritage is Japanese. They become fast friends again until the government decides to make all the Japanese move away.
The new girl who lives in the Yoko's house is convinced that the world is going to end and invites Darby to wait for it with her.

This book is so fun to read and some people can relate to the feelings of Darby's older sister, Kyla, who misses her friends
in D.C. I hope that anyone who reads it will like it as much as I did. My favorite part is the roller coaster in her neighbor's yard.

This is an embarrassment to psychology!!!
As a doctorate student currently studying birth order, I am completely embarrassed to even admit that I read the first chapter. Dr. Kevin Leman has NO published scientific studies in regards to Birth Order, (or any published studies that I could find) therefore all of his findings are simply based on his own hokey family experiences, which in no way should be a platform for anyone to advise another how to better themselves. Yes Birth Order has relevance in our love relationships, but most importantly so do the individual differences that make us human and unique, which this author(psychologist) seems to forget.

My mistake was reading it
Don't take a book seriously when it's written by a man who tells how he got free tickets to Disney World because he's a last born. You're better off reading something other than this "guide." Try getting to know someone, instead.

Not all theories have graphs
This book is life-changing. Maybe Dr. Leman's theories aren't backed by numerical data, but let's not forget--not all data can be gauged in graphs or contained in charts. In fact, Leman's opinions are backed by something more solid than statistics: his wealth of experience with the human condition. He has counseled virtually thousands of couples and thus lays claim to a vast understanding of personality types as well as the institution of marriage. Leman didn't write this book with the intent to impress some doctorate-seeking skeptic. He wrote it to help his readers use psychology to find marital bliss. It shows.
