A provoking story
A very challenging and provoking story of God's current move amoung the Chinese house church. It deeply touched me and I felt "connected" to the vision of these remarkable people. I would like to be captivated by the same passion they have. I would encourage anyone with a true love for Jesus to read this book.

Catch the Vision
This is an excellent book with an inspiring message, of what the chinese church is all about. If you want to read a book about people totally abandoning themselves to a cause than this is a must read.

Good overview, needs more scripture references
The men's group at our church used this book as our study recently and we found it to be an excellent work on leadership in general. Each chapter focuses on one quality of leadership, for example: being responsible, inspiring, communicating, and goal-oriented (there are 12). In each chapter, Eims describes that quality, illustrates good (and bad) applications of it with brief stories from his own experience, points out some Bible passages related to that quality, discusses practical ways to live out that quality, and sometimes mentions major pitfalls to avoid. There are study notes and questions related to each chapter at the end of the book (our group didn't discover them until half-way through the study!).

The only fault I would find with this book (and the reason for only four stars) is that it is short in places on reference to Scripture to back up its claims. Our study found support for most (if not all) the claims about leadership through our own study, but the book did not supply it in every place. That may be intentional on the part of the book, but I did not see it stated so.

While this book speaks to leadership in general, our group discussed the principles in relation to our families and found it very helpful in that context. I recommend this book for personal study, but even more for group study.

This book is a great practical guide to what leadership is.
Eims does a great job of clearly defining what leadership is all about. This is a book I have gone back to as a reminder of why I am in ministry and what I should focus on with the people I work with. I highly recommend it.

Practical Tips For Any Race!
Though this book is geared to leadership for blacks and blacks would more than likely identify with some of the examples and struggles in the book, the book provides Biblical and practical tips on leadership and wisdom that any race can appreciate! It's a shame this book is out-of-print. It has so much to offer the African-American community.

Excellent collection of writers.
I am a Seminary Professor and I use this book in my classes for Leadership and Administration. The diverse backgrounds of the leaders make this resource explode with potential for training a new generation of leaders. I highly recommend it.

Calvin, a Biography
Published in Paperback by Continuum International Publishing Group (31 March, 2003)
Author: Bernard Cottret
Amazon base price: $
What is it that makes a good biography so satisfying? An interesting subject, of course, but also one that is treated with both fairness and depth, placing that figure in the richness of his or her historical context. In this way we get all the pleasures of a good story along with the delight of learning. This is what Bernard Cottret accomplishes in his biography of John Calvin, now translated into English from the French. More historian than theologian, Cottret brings a useful objectivity to this study. In doing so the book reminds us of the fascination of subjects we might too easily consider merely academic. Immensely influential in his own time (and in our own, almost 500 years later), this biography gives us the story of Calvin's life in its historical context and a succinct analysis of his theology. It appropriately detours in order to remind the reader of the context in which Calvin was growing up: brief explorations of the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation, for example, remind us that these were not simply subjects in school in the early 1500's. As Cottret notes, Calvin turned 21 in 1530: what would it mean to be an immensely gifted and driven young man at such a time in Europe? It's a great question to ask, and in this book Cottret answers it with style and depth. --Doug Thorpe

Excellent treatment of an Enigmatic Reformer
John Calvin is a man to whom many pledge their spiritual alliegance. However, Cottret is careful to separate the man Calvin from the ensuing Calvinism that developed later. Calvin appears more timid and much more interested in spiritual reform than promoting a theocracy in Geneva. He appears often as an unwilling accomplice in the Protestant Reformation. Yet, his effect is still felt around the world today. Cottret also delves into Calvin's theology and casts him in his different roles.

Supurb biography of a misunderstood man
Whatever else may be said about French intellectuals, French historians are the finest in the world. Their biases don't get as flagrantly in the way as is sometimes the case with British and American historians. They are less chatty than the British can often be and they are far less inclined to the grand, sweeping statement than the Americans. The best of them observe even French people and events with scientific detachment.

This new biography of Calvin could only have been written by a Frenchman and Bernard Cottret does a wonderful job. The Calvin who emerges here is a far more complex figure than the cartoon that other historians have drawn. Far from a firebrand, John Calvin was a remote, shy, almost withdrawn figure who had whatever offices he held forced upon him. Geneva had gone in for Reformed Protestantism long before he arrived there and Calvin's Geneva was far from the "theocracy" it is often caricatured as.

Calvin's faults are not papered over; Cottret does not attempt to hide his displeasure at the burning in Geneva of many accused of witchcraft or of the burning of Michael Servetus, for example. But in the case of Servetus which is dealt with extensively here, he points out that Geneva only did what the Roman Church would have done if it had the chance and that Calvin actually cooperated with the Roman Catholic Church in this matter, seeing Rome as less of a threat than certain radical Protestants, rather cutting the ground out from under those who believe Calvin was rabidly anti-Catholic.

All in all, Calvin is an outstanding book that I cannot recommend too highly.

Cardinal Richelieu (World Leaders Past & Present)

Good for a quick overview, but there are better books
I think I would actually give this 3 stars for the actual writing, but it gets an extra star for the illustrations. Just about every well-known and important picture of the people or events of the time is included.

I realize this was written for children, so I won't criticize it for skimming lightly over the issues of Richelieu's life. I will say, though, that at times it paints him in an unnecessarily unflattering light. There are incidents and issues that the book glosses over that would be seen differently if more details were revealed.

For example, there is the recounting of the events of the Day of Dupes. For one thing, the book states the date of this event as November 30th, when really it was the 11th. But beyond that, Richelieu is described as sneaking into the queen mother's room through a secret passage, surprising her and the king in their conversation, and provoking a major outburst from the queen mother. All this indeed happened, but the way it is recounted here makes it sound like Richelieu was up to no good. The author tells us that the cardinal threw himself at the king's feet but neglects to mention that he also burst into tears, which puts a new perspective on things. In fact, throughout the book Richelieu's humanity is barely touched on, and he comes out seeming colder than he really was.

To me it seems like the author has no real love for Richelieu and that she wrote his biography like she was writing a research paper.

Riveting! Glossop writes history the way King writes horror!
This is a MUST read for anyone even remotely interested in French history. Although the book is written for children, Glossop manages to capture the imagination of even the most jaded adult with her brilliant imagery and seamless prose.

Good basic book, with good perspective
This book is used as the textbook for the first level of the Coaching Accreditation Program for USA Volleyball. It has a good broad perspective on the game, how to motivate and how to teach the skills. It also goes the through season and practice planning and breaks down the process in a very basic manner, which I found very useful.

A great beginning coach's book.

Leadership Starts From Within
Of the many "management" books I have read, Ms. Segil is the first to clearly articulate an approach that is critical in today's business environment--look at the behavior and motivation of the leader first. Most will agree that it is the people and not the process that moves the business ball forward. It is refreshing that she emphasizes the values and behaviors of the leader in the Ten Essential Traits and also provides the tools to build a foundation. I recommend this book highly for managers who are ready to put down their organizational charts and first look at themselves to facilitate change.

Dynamic Leader Adaptive Organization
Larraine Segil's book "Dynamic Leader Adaptive Organization" is truly a superb business management digest to serve all cultures across our world continents on what it takes to obtain good organizational results. Through her 10 Essential Traits, she sites hundreds of real life positive examples that provide a path to maximize our opportunities and accomplish our goals.

A missional approach to giving/stewardship/INVESTMENT
Callahan takes a great view of finances in the Church. He doesn't balk at the idea that ministry takes money. But, He always presents the case in terms of people instead of paper, mission instead of mortar, and investment instead of costs...

This book promotes the idea of seeing "giving" as investement in God's mission, which is for the sake of reaching people. And, Callahan suggests that there is a greater "cost" than giving-- that is the "cost" of what we lose when we don't invest in the kingdom-- the cost of rebellious children who are not taught, the cost of marriages that are not healed, the cost of not a community not knowing God. Incredible-- it always goes back to the mission and people-- and how we can invest in the Kingdom.

Chapter 1 is among the best in this book, and details how "mission" actually builds the finances of the church (not that a church does the mission for the finances, but finances to come as a result). More finances provide for a greater investment in mission, which results in more finances, which results in an even greater investment... it's cyclical. And, often, our financial problems in the church MAY result from our missional perspective. That's what I've gathered from the book, and I'm starting to agree with it.

The middle of this book bogs a little, although it does have some practical helpson stewardship campaigns, etc. If you're a church administrator, or the treasurer, chairman of a finance committee, ministry team, etc... you might want to read this one. If you do not directly over see the finances (the nuts and bolts) try reading Callahan's other book on church finances, "Giving and Stewardship in an Effective Church," for it will appeal more to your missional theology (and much of what you find in "Effective Church Finances" is simply a rehash of the other book, some chapters even being copied verbatim).

Especially helpful book for leaders of giving campaigns.
This insightful guide explores developing the church budget, fund-raising for the budget, setting goals for the congregation, and "growing in giving" from year to year. Callahan's pithy style and original blending of practical and philosophical makes him especially helpful to leaders of giving campaigns. There is not a wasted word in any of Callahan's books, and this is no exception.

Very good book on leadership
This book was worth its money in my opinion for chapters 1, 2, and 3 alone! In the first three chapters, Finzel writes from a plethora of leadership experience on "the leader", "the task", and "the person". He deals with several issues that most other "Christian leadership/management books" don't, such as leadership doubt (10), and the work on the organizational structure that a leader must do (23-24). To me the first three chapters were what set this book apart and were the unique contributions of this book to a market swamped with leadership books saying mostly the same things (not that we don't need to hear it!). The rest of the book was great as well, but the first three made the book excellent...definitely a worthwhile read!

Leadership 101
I am a Finzel fan. Full Disclosure: I took a doctoral course from him in January '04 called "Leading Change." While we studied the usual suspects (Collins, Kotter, et. al.), the fact is very few of them have done what they are writting about. For me, at some point, I get tired of hearing from the "experts" (who are excellent, no doubt about it) & I want to hear from the generals in the field; I want to hear from the guys who have been there & done it. Finzel is such a man.

This books is an excellent primer on leadership. Pithy. Succint. Only 10 chapters long, this book is a good solid read. I recommend it for all levels, but especially those young, up & comers in your organization.

A Sound Exposition of the Latest Models of Leadership
This book catches the crest of the post-empowerment, post-New-Leadership wave and is highly recommneded reading for anyone who wants to know about modern management ideas and practices. It has perhaps the best available description of the role of leadership in new, team-based, flat-org-chart work environments.

Among its virtues are terseness, practical aids, and reference to empircially based research. While its use of acronym-style models may not appeal to everyone, the authors mercifully do not push this aspect excessively. Page for page, its ideas are sound, clear and made relevant and applicable.

The book thus quite lives up to its intention of providing a mental model and practical support for "grassroots leadership". Even so, one can expect further advances in such thought, as well as even more popularization capable of absorption by actually "everyone".

A good mix of research and practical improvement steps
Everyone a Leader explores the value of grassroots leadership. The authors contend that today's workplace presents the opportunity-and the need-for every employee to demonstrate leadership. Their premise: Organizations today cannot survive if leadership is limited to the CEOs, executives and managers.

This book offers compelling proof that, equipped with proper tools and support, everyone has the potential to be a leader and make a difference. Everyone a Leader is based on a recent study in which 2,000 managers and non-managers from 450 organizations were asked to recall stories and anecdotes about small, often-overlooked turning points in an organization's daily life. These "critical incidents" illustrate the limitless opportunities for any person in an organization to demonstrate good leadership-or poor leadership.

Sixty-eight percent of the incidents described the actions of a manager or supervisor; the rest described non-managers and non-supervisors. The incidents were examined and found to encompass 17 common attributes of leadership. These competencies then were related to five key strategies the authors call the CLIMB model of leader effectiveness:

Create a compelling future. Let the customer drive the organization. Involve every mind. Manage work horizontally. Build personal credibility.

More than a research report A surprisingly large number of the critical incidents described poor leadership. These seemed to indicate that many formal leaders either don't have the needed skills, or aren't aware of the opportunities to "seize the moment." On the other hand, many incidents of "good leadership behavior" came from what the authors call Grassroots Leaders-people in the frontline or in support positions who emerge during critical moments to act as leaders.

Everyone a Leader goes beyond merely reporting the research findings. The book is chock-full of practical how-to's and personal strategies for achieving each of the CLIMB components. Powerful examples from the research underscore each point.

Half the critical incidents were related to the Involve Every Mind strategy described in Chapter Four. And half of these incidents were negative-leaders who minimized individual and team effort, withheld information or missed opportunities to share it, and either sidestepped decisions that could have solved problems or arrived at decisions in a way that made things worse. Most disturbingly, the negative behaviors made a strong and even indelible impression on the respondents but were quickly forgotten by the people who performed them. These leaders were unconsciously poisoning the organization they were supposed to maintain and improve.

Vivid examples of poor leadership described behaviors ranging from thoughtless to rude and even vulgar. The authors show how easily these situations could be turned around using basic people skills: listen, share information, coach, praise, have patience and be persistent. Stressing the importance of gaining active commitment of the entire workforce, this chapter provides in-depth advice on how to win that all-important commitment from peers, subordinates and supervisors.

Even more detail is provided in a "tools" section at the end of the book. The "tools" are step-by-step learning modules that walk the reader through self-improvement activities in the areas addressed in each chapter.

The explore the "emotional labor" required every time someone must make an effort to call up a smile or positive response, or resist the temptation to step in and tell somebody what to do.

The authors provide practical insights into how this works, as well as guidelines for maximizing areas of greatest strength and preparing to assume greater leadership responsibilities.

Grassroots Leadership: tying it all together

Everyone a Leader explores what it means to be a leader in today's organizations-where more and more decisions are getting "pushed down;" where executives, managers, and supervisors are doing more "coaching" and less "directing;" and where employees at every level are taking on broader responsibilities. This book provides theoretical discussion of new directions for leadership; however its most significant contribution rests in the practical how-to tools and leadership "stories" or "critical incidents" that tie the theory to practice.
