The greatest historical adventure I've read in years!
Witty, sexy, adventurous, fast-paced, RIVETING! Like a breath of fresh air. It isn't merely literature. It goes beyond literature. It is hard to believe that something as exciting and full of life and humor as this, something historical, no less, could be written by a contemporary author. A jewel!

Jesus' Timeless Model for Leadership
Those who know of sports promoter Bob Briner know he was an outspoken advocate of living your faith in the world you live and work in. His books provide insight into how to make that happen. In "The Leadership Lessons of Jesus", and the companion volume "More Leadership Lessons of Jesus", Bob Briner and Ray Pritchard take the reader chronologically through the life of Jesus as described in the Gospel of Mark, pointing out along the way the leadership behaviors of Jesus and how they apply to today's world. The first volume covers Mark chapters 1-6, the second chapters 7-10. The format is one of short scripture introducing a chapter, followed by a 1-2 page commentary. These short readings are great for daily meditations or reading in short pieces. Other books about Jesus' leadership, such as Laurie Beth Jones' "Jesus, CEO" follow a similar format, but the content is different. Jones uses scripture passages to introduce the leadership concept in each chapter, but follows it with insights from her own and many other traditions. Briner and Pritchard stick to explaining the Biblical context of the quote and its applications to business life in today's world. The chronological order also helps see a broader context of the time and place of each encounter, what happened before and after. Anyone seriously interested in Jesus as a model of leadership will find these books valuable, with many fresh and original insights.

Challenge Your Faith
We just gave this book to our Grandchildren tonight for Chanukah. As I read it to our Grandchildren they were held wide-eyed in their places. The anticipation of seeing this at the movies is evident in every commercial that flashes across our television. But of all the artistry this book delivers, it is the questions at that back of this book that earns its five stars. Questions on Courage, Moses' and their own. Questions about other Biblical heroes that showed tremendous courage against all odds, which causes them to think beyond the story . A book that causes a child to actually think. A welcomed addition to any home library. It will challenge you , your children and cause you to look a little deeper into your spirit.

Moses in the Bulrushes

Excellent for young children
We read this book to three- and four-year-olds in Sunday school and the beautiful illustrations easily captured their attention. My co-teacher and I teared up at the illustration of Moses's mother after she left her baby in the bullrushes--easily the best rendition I've ever seen of her heartbreak. The authors don't whitewash the story in text or pictures, but their simple language makes it easier as an adult to share the story with small children. I'm buying it for my kids at home because I liked it that much.

The Moses Legacy: The Evidence of History
Published in Hardcover by Sidgwick & Jackson (June, 2002)
Author: Graham Phillips
Amazon base price: $33.50
Average review score:

A Great Read
You must read Phillips' earlier book "Act of God" before you read this book. In the first book, Phillips explained how all the 'miracles' as experienced by Moses and the Hebrews (eg parting of the Sea of Reed) could be explained by the volcanic eruption of Thera.

In this book, Phillips traced the origin of Moses. Although his conclusions were slightly different from his earlier book, the whole theory seemed to be self consistent and did not actually contradict the first book.

In the search for the Mountain of God and the Hebrew God, Phillips came to a "frightening" conclusion that the burning bush as witnessed and interpreted by Moses to be God Himself was actually a hallucination resulting from eating the thorn apple. This is frightening because it seems to suggest that the entire western faith was based on the hallucination of one man three thousand five hundred years ago!

Anyway, one may not agree totally with Phillips' conclusions, one should at least praise him for his self-consistency and bold suggestions.

It is a good read - keep an extremely open mind!

Great Book! Applicable to todays Christian leader!
The book gives insight to Moses life and his own struggles to be a Man of God. The book is Biblically based and shows that God has a plan for all of us and will lead us through our struggles even when our faith is the weakest if we will just honor him.

Ian Myles Slater on Buber's Exodus and Wilderness
This is probably the most readable of Martin Buber's longer Biblical studies. It combines a sense of narrative movement with ingenious interpretations (often backed by formidable, if now obsolete, scholarship, almost always tucked away in endnotes), rhapsodies on freedom and the desert, reflections on the experiences described as miracles, and some hard political thought. For those familiar with traditional Jewish biblical interpretation, its influence on Buber's thought, and his willingness to work out implications by suggesting supplements to the biblical narrative, will be apparent. This combination makes "Moses" interesting to read, but difficult to classify.

Together with a much more difficult book by Buber, "The Kingship of God," it presents early Israelite religion as including a revolutionary social movement, egalitarian and anti-state, yet demanding accountability and public order. Similar ideas, usually less attractively expressed, and often less carefully nuanced, began to appear in the late 1960s or early 1970s, and in some cases remain influential. Buber's priority is not always acknowledged. Of course it is easy to believe that the ferment of their time was as influential on these interpreters as the first part of the twentieth century was on Buber, and that they came to their conclusions independently,

Some readers, looking for traditional religious edification, will probably find Buber's presentation too rationalistic and secular. I am sure that there are those who will be upset by Buber's interpretation of Moses asking God for His true name, and the unhelpful answer, as showing the influence of Egyptian name magic. Others, encouraged at first by the footnotes and the assumption that the biblical text cannot be taken literally, will find him, well, too religious. If you approach "Moses" as the work of a religious philosopher with a strong interest in social issues, and a willingness to take the ancient text very seriously, but not literally, you will find much of interest.
