A Sober and Necessary Reality Check
I bought and read this book when the softcover was first released, and had the chance to glance at it again just recently. The book has not lost any of its incisiveness and sting. James' astute and direct analysis of Black intellectual life has been long in coming. She articulates opinions that many people have probably had, but have not had the guts or gumption to put out in public. It's about time that public (and well paid) intellectuals such as hooks, Gates, West, and the others got some real criticism. I highly recommend this book, which should be required reading in introductory and advanced Black Studies programs. Its incisive and on-target critique of postmodernism alone is reason enough for it to be included in the curriculum. This feminist volume is rich in ideas, insightful in its critique, and is a refreshing antidote to most of the postmodern B.S. floating around the elite caucasian, leather-coated campuses these days.

An Explosive Intellectual Achievement!!!
Joy James' radical synthesis of political philosophy and African American feminist philosophy is at once provocative and intellectually explosive. Drawing from such diverse areas of intellecual inquiry as African American philosophy, Women's Studies, African American Studies, Lesbian & Gay Studies, postmodern and postcolonial theory, Critical Race Theory, and political philosophy, Professor James puts forward a relentless critique of contemporary African American intellectual life that leaves both the "conservative" and the "radical" sides of the African American intellectual arena suspect. In her employment of insights culled from the nascent Africana philosophical tradition, and both the classical and contemporary African American social and political philosophy traditions, James critiques and offers correctives to African American public and private intellectuals of no less distinction than bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Cornel West. James' books also provides a severely needed critique of W.E.B. Du Bois' much mangled feminism, Anna Julia Cooper's often overlooked contributions to Du Bois' thought, and Ida B. Wells' anti-lyching radicalism. Applying discursive formulations and practices normally reserved for the most highly revered among the Western European philosophers, Joy James utlizes her training as a political philosopher to elucidate a path of out the impasse that African American intellectuals seem to be caught in. This book is absolutely a must read for anyone interested in African American intellectual life, African American critical theory, and/or African American feminist philosophy.

Broad your mind!
This book contains highly condensed stories based on 4-hour-interviews with students from all over the world. Read it, enjoy it and: please recommend it to teachers, to schools, to friends.

Not only you definitely will broaden your mind, but also you get very personal view of the world from the students' perspective.

There is a lot of prejudice about different cultures and/or nations. Become a bit more unprejudiced, tolerant and curious about the world with this unique collection of stories.

An absolutely fascinating read!
Take
a house full of students at the same school, from the most different fields of study -- but on top you get people from all corners of the world. With completely different backgrounds, religions, beliefs, experiences, desires -- and yet they are all wonderful humans, sharing details of their lives with us. And fascinating they are! From the girl crossing wild mountain borders in the Middle East to get her visa to the Asian violinist playing for African villagers, to the American who had never been in love before...

Admirable the author's skill to knit the essence of the surely intense interviews into very readable stories with a flow of their own.

Well worth your attention if you want to gain some insight into the ways of thinking of people from the rest of the world. Very different, you may think, and then again recognize some familiar traits in all of them. Just one big family of mankind? Here you get to know them...

What Makes a Leader? (HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition)

The five components of emotional intelligence
Daniel Goleman is co-chairman of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations, based at Rutgers University. He is the author of the bestsellers 'Emotional Intelligence' (1995) and 'Working with Emotional Intelligence' (1998). This article was published in the November-December 1998 issue of the Harvard Business Review.

"... most effective leaders are alike in one crucial way: they all have a high degree of what has come to be known as emotional intelligence." Thankfully, according to the author, people can develop their emotional intelligence. In this article the author discusses the five components of emotional intelligence: (1) self-awareness, (2) self-regulation, (3) motivation, (4) empathy, and (5) social skill. Each of these components are discussed in detail and complemented with examples. In addition, the author complements this with a discussion on whether you can learn emotional intelligence: "It's important to emphasize that building one's emotional intelligence cannot - will not - happen without sincere desire and concerted effort."

Nice, clear article on the softer side of leadership. The author explains that leadership is not just built on IQ and technical ability, but needs a healthy proportion of emotional skills. Readers have the choice to continue with Daniel Goleman's books or his 2000-article 'Leadership that Gets Results'. The author has a understandable US-English writing style.

The impact of emotional intelligence on leadership
Daniel Goleman is co-chairman of the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations at Piscataway, New Jersey, and author of 'Emotional Intelligence' (1995) and 'Working with Emotional Intelligence' (1998).

This 1998 Harvard Business Review article is based on research into effective leadership at 188 companies. According to the author IQ and technical skills are important, but emotional intelligence is the sine qua non (= ultimate requirement) of leadership. Chief characteristic of someone with a high EI is that he/she is aware of emotions and able to regulate them - and this awareness and regulation are directed both inward, to one's self, and outward, to others. The author describes in detail the five components of emotional intelligence at work, which are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill. He explains how to recognize EI in potential leaders, how and why it leads to measurable business results, and, most importantly, how it can be learned ("It's important to emphasize that building one's emotional intelligence cannot - will not - happen without sincere desire and concerted effort.").

I did like this interesting article from Daniel Goleman. It is surprisingly clear in the explanation of emotional intelligence. On this subject, I recommend the 2001 Harvard Business Review article 'Building the Emotional Intelligence of Groups' by Vanessa Urch Druskat and Steven Wolff, and the various books by David McClelland. (Please note that I have not (yet) read Daniel Goleman's books 'Emotional Intelligence' and 'Working with Emotional Intelligence'.) The article is written in understandable US-English.

surprising and inspiring
Many of my friends have read and suggested this books because of its great expressions of faith and how women are changing the face of religious leadership. They represent a new way of seeing God and a new community of leadership. Never before have so many women served the holy with earthly authority; it's a new paradigm and they might change the destructive and violent energy so prevalent in our time.

Authentic, exciting, substantial, celebratory
Freud asked what women really want. Rabbi Malka Drucker asks what both women and men want and need, spiritually, today. The answer is individual expression within a community, a fellowship, that supports each of us to bring goodness (divinity, God) into the world. The book functions as biography, history, and inspiration all at once, as it introduces the remarkable women--some widely known (Marianne Williamson, Dr. Elaine Pagels), some locally known (Dr. Nahid Angha, Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis)- whose stories it tells. I disagree with "Publishers Weekly" reviewer that Rabbi Drucker's personal comments are intrusive. To the contrary, they enliven and bring immediacy to the spiritual biographies she presents and encourage the reader to bring his or her own experience to meeting these leaders. Though the book could be used for study or the classroom, its personal approach is anything but "textbookish." It's substantial, accessible, authentic, exciting and celebratory. A must-read if you are investigating or committed to matters of the spirit.

I thought it was great me being a military person and all!
The book was great and I think that anyone interested in military history should read it. It covers a lot of the great leaders of our country and it shows why we are independent today. We would never be free if it wasn't for the brave men who risked their own lives to lead their men into battle. Our country pays great gratitude to these men and this book shows why each and every one of them deserved the honor they recieved. I salute all the great leaders of this country. And all the veterans who fought there way to victory.

Fascinating to read
Kathleen Paparchontis' 100 World Leaders Who Shaped World History is an informative collection of 100 one-page biographies of the men and women who stand out as the most powerful and influential leaders in the recorded history of the world from antiquity to the present day. Great statesmen and tyrannical dictators are listed side by side, from Hammurabi and Winston Churchill to Josef Stalin and Adolf Hitler himself. Each biographical entry is accompanied by a photograph if possible, or else an artist's image of the historical leader. A final page sports a 16-question trivia quiz with two suggested projects, and an index facilitates quick and easy reference. 100 World Leaders is fascinating to read by itself, as well as a superbly presented survey of the personalities, good, ill, and human, who etched the lessons of history itself into collective human memory.
