To Lead Is To Empower
I highly recommend this book to new and experienced leaders who want to make a difference in the workplace and enjoy the true value of being an exceptional leader.

When I apply the principles outlined in To Lead Is To Empower, my employee job satisfaction goes through the roof. Which means more profit dollars drop to the bottom line and shareholder value increases. The best part is, it does not cost (except for the price of the book) me any more time or extra money to enjoy these benefits. All I had to do is make the simple shift in my perspective from getting to giving. Then use the exercises in the book to stay on track and be successful.

Leading by Empowering
To Lead is to Empower is an absolute must read not only for those beginning their careers in management, but also for those managers with decades of experience. The subtitle, "Leadership to Empower Your Employees & Yourself," gives but a hint of the practical information contained in the book.

No matter what your background, education or skill set, you'll learn so much from Shar McBee's book, even if you're not in a business field. The book will leave you motivated to take the simple, but profound, steps the author writes about all through the 13 chapters. The 224 pages will absolutely fly by, but the time you spend reading To Lead is to Empower will make a tremendous difference in your life, as well as in the lives of your employees.

Buy it. Read it. Use it as you lead, as you empower your employees and as you empower yourself.

A Leadership Book for Everyone
If you want to be instructed in principles that will change your life, this is your leadership book. Everyday I get a new "ah hah" from applying these ideas. I am thrilled I opted to read this book. The author is one heck of a trainer and mentor.

The 12-Lead ECG: In Acute Myocardial Infarction

Clear, concise, and VERY easy to understand. Excellent Book
As a paramedic, it has become essential to understand 12-lead ECG analysis and this book tops my list of recommendations for those needing to understand how to interpret 12-leads. Phalen does an excellent job of presenting just the material necessary to deteminine if and where infarction may be occurring. I highly recommend this book for all emergency cardiac care providers. This book would be especially helpful to those starting to use 12 lead ECG's in the pre-hospital setting.

Great
Tim Phalen has written a excellent book for the paramedic or flight nurse. Of the dozen ECG textbooks on the market, this book is the first I recommend. The book assumes a basic knowledge of ECG rhythm interpretation, and then presents the essentials of 12 lead ECG interpretation in light of the AMI. Tim uses a straight forward approach that explains the concepts without patronizing the reader.

All Roads Lead to the Sea

A significant young poet
Kapka Kassabova, Bulgarian immigrant to New Zealand, the author of a couple of collections of poems and of a couple of novels, and though she is a talented novelist, she is most of all a brilliant poet. Here comes her writings of longings and not belonging really to its right, with poignant thoughts and words drizzled with her special touch of East-European melancholy. With the ever present ocean under an often discontented sky she speaks of restlessness, doubt, dreams and wonder, love and pain, here and elsewhere. All Roads Lead to the Sea was the debut that sent her straight to the upper shelves among both contemporary and classic poetry. Highly recommended!

Excellent..a new voice reflecting the immigrant-experience..
Wish it was available more readily..

All Roots Lead to Rock: Legends of Early Rock N Roll

For die-hard record collectors, the words Bear Family have all the cachet of Rolls-Royce. The German label kindles the interest of music fans with pricey reissues devoted to artists other labels would ignore--mainly, the overlooked forefathers of rock, folk, and country. Owning a Bear Family box set is always a revelation: liner notes are well researched, alternate songs are employed, and forgotten archival photos are typically featured. It's a music completist's dream--and can lead to an expensive hobby.

With All Roots Lead to Rock, writer/musicologist Colin Escott culls the best of Bear Family's voluminous liner note essays and monographs into a single (and affordable) book. Fans of Mojo magazine and the writings of Nick Tosches and Peter Guralnick, and anyone who has ever wondered about rock's early days, should take note of this title. In-depth essays and interviews on everyone from Screamin' Jay Hawkins to Smiley Lewis to Duane Eddy are featured--in all there are 17 musician portraits, and each essay proves fascinating. The roots of rock were an intertwined and incestuous lot: Freddie Bell's arrangement of Big Mama Thornton's "Hound Dog" was covered by Elvis, who--in turn--influenced everyone from forgotten rockabilly artist Ben Hewitt to country crooner Conway Twitty. And, as these writings prove, nobody in the '40s and '50s was safe from the major-label hit machines that were poised to steal a hot song and have their big-name artists cover it. If this book has a single theme, it's the riddle of fate: What allows a few artists to persevere and find fame while many others struggle just to keep their composure? In describing rock wildman Bobby Lee Trammell in his introduction to Ian Wallis's essay, Escott pinpoints Trammell's simple shortcoming: "The bit of DNA that would have told him what to do in a crucial situation simply wasn't there." As All Roots proves, such follies make for compelling stories and--more often than not--great music. --Jason Verlinde

Bear Family Quality
If you own any of the Bear Family label's CD collections, you know why they're worth the expense. Meticulous is an apropos word for the CDs as well as this book. Not as irreverent as some other rock books on 1950s artists, but not too monotone, either. Lots of interesting info that even longtime rock lit readers should appreciate. Check it out and then browse some of BF's CD offerings...

Colin Escott is the authority. Bar none.
Colin Escott and his compatriots in the great Bear Family family have been bringing the finest and most intriguing American music to light for decades through their persistence in packaging completist retrospectives for serious listeners. Early rock and roll and its precedent musical forms--country, rhythm & blues, even popular vocalists--have never been better served than by their responsible reissues and thoroughgoing, often hilarious, always insightful liner notes. ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROCK is a must-have for anyone who cares about this music--these are the liner notes that helped me fall in love with it years ago, and to this day I look forward to new Bear Family sets with the knowledge that even on the infrequent occasion that the music isn't immediately to my taste, the liner notes will be an entertainment unto themselves.

Anywhere He Leads Me (Life Messages of Great Christians)

Another great devotional compiled by Judith Couchman
Judith's devotionals are so well put-together and a real blessing! First I read most of the Amy Carmichael one (called A Very Present Help), but I lost it before I finished it! (I had to order another one!)

So I started this one. And I just love it. All the devotionals in this series are similarly arranged. Each day's section starts out a general statement that summarizes the topic, then there's Scripture, sometimes combining passages from 2 or more books of the Bible, on the same theme. Then there is a selection from a Corrie Ten Boom book. Then there are a couple of questions to think about and a prayer. These can be easily completed in 10 minutes, but sometimes I linger on them and reread them. I usually do one per day, but sometimes they are so good I just want to do another one.

This book would be wonderful for any Christian desiring to grow in his or her walk with the Lord. It's also a good sampling of Corrie Ten Boom's writings. You'll probably want to get some of Corrie's books after reading this devotional. Her main story is told in The Hiding Place and Tramp for the Lord and then there are many other books that have short passages to read.

I would recommend this book for someone who wants to jump-start their devotional life (or it would make a great gift!). The reading isn't difficult and Corrie's writing is easy to understand, but very profound and meaningful at the same time.

I also recommend the movie "The Hiding Place".

Please read my other reviews of Christian books!

Great devotional readings
This book is a compliation of 40 daily devotional readings. Each devotional starts with a thought of the day, followed by a passage from the Bible pertaining to that topic for the day. There are also questions posed for you to think about, and a suggested prayer the reader could respond with.

What I liked about this devotional reading is the insights from Corrie ten Boom. She draws examples of how the Bible can be relevant in our everyday lives by recounting her own life experiences. Much of which was from her experience as a survivor of Hitler's concentration camps and her subsequent journey around the world to tell of God's faithfulness.

This book provides excerpts from her other books. It is great as a daily devotional guide. If you are interested in her story, however, I would highly recommend The Hiding Place and the sequel Tramp For the Lord.

A Better Way to Think About Business: How Personal Integrity Leads to Corporate Success

Excellence in business depends on "integrity, values and virtues" as much as profits, says philosopher Robert C. Solomon. In A Better Way to Think About Business, Solomon says that business leaders shouldn't be torn between doing what is right and doing what is necessary to make money. "This is not only personally painful, but it is also bad for business. It leads to inefficiency and distrust. It leads to poor morale, bitterness and cynicism. And it results in a diminished reputation, both of one's own business and of business in general." A good corporation fosters an environment that encourages people to develop their skills and their values. A bad corporation, on the other hand, is a "white-collar version of hell" that ultimately pays for its sins through disgruntled employees and unhappy customers, says Solomon, a professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Solomon spends a chapter debunking the Machiavellian myths that now dominate business. He argues in another for integrity in free enterprise. He devotes a third section of the book to describing 45 business virtues, including compassion and trust, and the importance of each. He also provides a historical and philosophical context, citing Aristotle and Adam Smith, among other great thinkers. A Better Way to Think About Business is persuasive reading for employers, employees, and those concerned about corporate behavior. --Dan Ring

Average review score:

A Successful Corporation has nothing to do with football.
Forget Attila the Hun. Ditch Machiavelli. Stop thinking about your corporation in terms of a football game or a war. There is a better metaphor, and you will be happier and more successful if you adopt it. According to Robert Solomon (and he quotes Nietzsche among others, to prove his case!), many of our personal values seem to be in conflict with those of the corporation where we're employed, because our way of thinking about business success has been poisoned by the mental models we use, and the leaders who we are asked to emulate (football coaches and 'The Scourge of God'? ).

"A Better Way to Think About Business: How Personal Integrity Leads to Corporate Success" delivers exactly what its title promises, and has already helped me through a couple of ethical dilemmas that I've had to resolve in the course of my job. This book is very clearly written and provokes clear thinking on the subject of business ethics. It does not insult your intelligence by stringing slogans together and calling the result a 'business ethic'. (Personal note: I am so bloody sick of books that proport to teach me 'Managing by Values' and turn out to be fluff and slogans and bad writing to boot. Business ethics is a very complex and gut-wrenching subject, and some authors need to treat their readers with a bit more honor and dignity.)

Sorry for the above tirade. Read this book. If you don't have time to read the whole thing, dip into the 'Catalog of Business Virtues' at the end of the book and try to schedule a virtue per day to think about on the long commute home. I'm sure I'll keep going back to Robert Solomon for a 'better way to think about' the really tough business situations.

Refreshing, thorough, and exceptional! Read it.
Robert Solomon offers a practical, clear and systematic approach to thinking through the place of integrity in the success of any enterprise. It is as applicable to your life as to your business.

This is a remarkable book in that it lays a sensible, philosophical foundation and builds a compelling, practical case for the place of virtue in business. His definition, that "a virtue, in essence, is a value embodied and built into action", leads the reader to understand the true basis for a successful strategic planning process. Solomon emphasizes the need for corporations to see themselves as communities, people- rather than profit-driven, and, thus, to change to "a better way of thinking". An excellent, careful, scholarly treatment presented in a linear, holistic, engaging style, this book, taken to the boardrooms of the world, can only change business for the better. It is a must-read for those who care to maintain their sanity in the multi-faceted corporate world. The book is aptly named!

Caring Enough to Lead : How Reflective Thought Leads to Moral Leadership

An Interesting Insight Into Leadership
Leonard Pellicer's Caring Enough to Lead contains many interesting and thoughtful reflections to become a successful leader. He uses reflections at the end of each chapter to let the reader think about how they lead or how they can become a good leader. The reflections were very useful to me to see what kind of a leader I hope to become.

I particularly enjoyed his anecdotes about various happenings in his life. They give the book the feeling of someone who actually cares about what he is righting about rather than just someone who is writing just to get a paycheck. He stresses that caring is the most important thing to becoming a successful leader and it shows in the book.

However, if you are looking for a book that tells you exactly how to become a good and moral leader, this may not be the book for you. This book gives you the tools you will need to find out what kind of a leader you are and at the same time steers the reader in the direction he or she would need to go to become a good leader.

I am currently studying to be a teacher and I feel that this book is a good resource for any future or current teacher or administrator. It gives the reader a chance to critically look at how he or she leads and can become a better leader by making the right questions are being asked. By asking yourself a few key questions and knowing what those answers mean to being a good leader can help the reader become a much better and more caring leader.

Pellicer's personal experiences are what make this book work. His extensive experience in the education field shows that he knows what it takes to be a caring leader. I that Pellicer's reflective thought process will help me to become a better leader in the education field and ultimately make me a better teacher in the long run.

This is an awesome book!
I am not writing this review to seek favors or to boost the book sales of one of my colleagues. I just happen to be blessed with the profound honor and pleasure of having worked under the author's guiding hand for the past two years. I can tell you from firsthand experience that Leonard Pellicer "walks his talk". He is a touching, masterful, giving, caring person, and far and away the most wonderful leader with whom I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. He has created an academic workplace completely committed to the full realization of its vision statement. The result is that I work with the most caring and loving group of people imaginable. It just doesn't get any better than this.

"Caring Enough to Lead" is a fantastic book. I love how he illustrates the path of the heart with simple yet profound personal life examples. Such a technique can easily go sideways with self-absorption, but not in this case. One of the most delightful features of the book is my certainty that the chapters which speak the loudest to me today (among them: "some of the questions", "what I believe about people", "water buffalo", "to be a teacher", "successful schools", "sharing power", and "professional educator") will no doubt change along with my need to respond to a given difficulty or circumstance in the future. To wit, some of its struck me as a gem that I need to realize at this time, and other sections will no doubt simmer for a while and then resurface when I most need their wisdom.

Overall, the book rings in my heart very much the way "The Holy Man" by Susan Trotter (my favorite book of all time) did. Exactly the opposite of technical and boring, it is a refreshingly delightful and interesting read. I have never before stopped to actually DO the suggested exercises in books, but I found myself actually doing that with this one, because what I gleaned from each chapter was simply too valuable to let pass by without trying to apply its lessons to my life.

This book is a treasure find in a field of tired and rehashed ideas. I realize that it's dangerous to wish for things other than they are, but I believe it would be a much better world if more leaders had Leonard's heartfelt leadership style. Reading this book provides a solid step in that direction.

Amazing!
This book is an amzing work of art. It shows romance, chidly love and still shows the Rowlands and Eric trying to keep up with their faith in God! Delectable delight of a book and every Christian lover shoud read it. As a matter of fact, everyone 12 and older should read it. It'll change the way you view certain things and it can also teach you something.

A wonderful book!
I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it and would give it more stars if I could. This is the second book in the series, the first being "Cassandra's Song." This one tells about Andrew's second daughter Brianna, who falls in love and comes to adopt a sweet baby girl. I really found the story
interesting and hard to put down.

An inspiration to parents and Children's Ministers
This book clearly tells of the events in the Brownsville Revival. The Holy Spirit can move through the children and Vann Lane tells in a simplistic way how the Spirit moves and how to apply this to your Children's Church. I want all my Sunday School staff to read it and become inspired.

Vann Lane's wonderful book shows God's love for them.
As soon as I read CHILDREN OF REVIVAL, I hurriedly called our Children's Minister and took the book to him--I felt it was too vital to lose a minute. Jesus invited the children to come unto Him; and in the Brownsville Revival, the children have not been forgotten! God hasn't forgotten them; the ministerial staff haven't forgotten them! Vann Lane's book is wonderful! His record of God's visitations to the children was a blessing!

Reminds us that we must be self-conscious ethicists
Put on your thinking cap when you read this superb wake-up call to women who wish to lead. This book is chock full of ideas that have received too little circulation. Buchanan shows that the feminist movement was really started by women of deep religous and moral commitment. She also shows why women's leadership (and morality) has been cast as somehow less significant than men's. Buchanan reminds us that we cannot simply buy into the values that pervade our institutions, that we must rethink fundamental principles and moral issues. She also offers a fine critique of the popular view that women leaders are somehow "nicer" than men leaders: women are capable of the range of leadership and moral capabilities. We must choose if we are to lead wisely.

EVERY WOMAN IN AMERICA SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.
"CHOOSING TO LEAD by Constance Buchanan is quite simply one of the most important books on women published in this decade." -- Karen Page, Chair, Harvard Business School Network of Women Alumnae and Executive Committee, The Council of 10
