Where the Glories of April Lead
Published in Paperback by Mitki/Mitki Press (01 June, 2001)
Author: Charles Rafferty
Amazon base price: $10.00
Used price: $7.00
Average review score:

Prime Genius
Rafferty has the gift. These are excellent poems from an emerging poet. For a man in his early thirties, he has such a grasp for his art. This book is superior to his previous: "The Man On the Tower." And I feel that is saying a great deal. Buy this book!

Circling Herons
This was my first Rafferty, and while it was the more cerebral, jokier poems which first caught my attention, I found myself deeply moved upon closer reading. A propensity for examining skeletons found in nature and a fondness for drink brought James Wright to mind, and Rafferty's mastery of the "nature poem"; as always, metaphoric for solitude, eternity and the inevitable grief felt by all of us who remain in the world, puts him at the foothills of Frost country. Herons circle in these poems, and like them, this book carries "a message my heart can't hear enough."

Doggone Beautiful
Whoah, you know I never read a book of poems before, but this one's pretty effing cool. There's this buddy of mine, who's like a professor, anyway he went to school for poetry and he told me this was one of the best books of poems out there. And, he told me, it'd appeal to a dude like me. So i turn to this one poem written to ex-girlfriends, and it's just how I feel, but said like I just couldn't. And all these poems about nature, at a time like this I'm thinking we need this kind of stuff. And it fits nicely in your pocket.

Amazing
this novel is the best one I have read in my entire life.
Charlie, mes compliments!!(congratulations)

courage to lead
this is a wonderful well thought out novel on leadership that really makes one think about work, life, and what is and should be important. I have been through many seminars on management skills etc. but have yet to find a book that illustrates these principals as this book has and in such an interesting manner. its a must read.

Very good
A refreshing way to cover tried and true topics of management, leadership and what is important in our lives. I thoroughly enjoyed this more than that the dozens of "classes" I've attended. The ending will make you think.

Encouraging, Informative and Helpful
Ms. Waters provides a unique perspective of dealing with a very personal topic. Being a cancer survivor myself, she offered insights on ways to deal with the stress, frustration, and fear of dealing with cancer in simple terms. I encouraged my family to read it as well, and they found it informative and valuable. It helped them to understand the thoughts and feelings of what I was going through, when I could not always express them adequately myself.
Ms. Waters gives numerous ideas and excersises for the reader to help cope with the multitude of issues and emotions that someone fighting cancer encounters every day.
I reccomend it to anyone who is facing (or has faced cancer), as well as relatives and friends of cancer "fighters".

Dancing with the Diagnosis
An extremely well written and uncommon approach to a patient's journey to surviving cancer. A virtual dialog with a brave Leukemia survivor on how to take control of one's own recovery. I highly recommend this book to anyone going through the struggle to survive this disease or anyone who is touched by someone trying to survive. Bravo, Michelle Waters!!!!

Informative, innovative, courageous!
This book is a MUST for anyone diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness or anyone related to, or friends with, such a person. The author bravely discloses her personal account of being diagnosed, in the prime of her life, with such an illness and uses her highly refined communication skills to teach people in similar circumstances how to deal with the emotional aspects of this situation. The book is very helpful in giving people a more assertive position during a time when so many things must feel like they are out of their control.

Special attention is paid suggesting ways family and friends can be of assistance during this difficult journey and the level of optimism this book reads with is reassuring to anyone facing similar circumstances. Obviously, I highly recommend this book!

Hope for Reconciliation
Everyone married or to-be-married should read this book. Finally Christian based, excellent advise for a troubled marriage. I got excited, could relate, cried, felt overwelmed, and found hope in this book. It is the best advise I have read on honoring my marriage covenant (besides the Bible) in the past year.

Helped my marriage
I saw Dr. Linda on television several times and then saw that Dr. Laura endorsed her book. I was intrigued and struggling in my own marriage. So I bought her new book and was so thankful I did. Dr. Linda not only gives helpful advice on how to strengthen marriage but she addresses the way we think about marriage. After reading her book, I realized how much my thoughts influenced my marital behavior. This revelation has literally saved my marraige in that I was thinking divorce. Now I am applying her ideas and seeing my marriage turn around for the better. Just practicing the Five to One Rule has helped. I have begun to Divorce Proof My Marriage! Donna in Carol Stream, IL.

This will be a BEST SELLER!
Dr. Linda has written a couple of good books. This one is AMAZING! I've never read anything like this one. She takes you down a familiar path (no matter what your marital status: newlywed, married, divorced, remarried) ...it has to be familiar because she tells so many real-life stories from 20 some years of therapy. She hits us all! I saw myself and my spouse on nearly every page. This is going to be one of those books people buy, read, and then buy another for their "friend" who's going through problems. Make room at the top of the BEST SELLER charts. Here comes Dr.Linda.

Really Excellent!
I bounced onto this page because I wanted to write a review. I've had this book for about a month. I'm a bass player originally, and am now moving over to guitar. Frankly, the content presentation (comprehensiveness and pacing) is just, well, excellent. I was surprised at my progress and how much I learned... and how good I sounded too. I think the book works best for those either just starting to learn lead guitar or those in an early intermediate stage. Also, the licks you'll be learning are straight ahead rock too, so you'll enjoy this book most if you like rock/rock 'n roll. Beyond that, I can only echo the comments in the Best of breed for beginners, November 8, 1998, post. They're right on target. In sum, I really felt like I got my money's worth with this book and, if you meet the criteria I note above, I think you will too.

great second step
I had worked my way through all of the basic notes in the first position, and most basic chords. With this basis, I was able to really enjoy working with this book. It is all played at a moderate pace. The play along band makes it a lot of fun. My son wants to get the "Killer Metal Lead Licks"by the same auther because he liked what he saw in this book so much.

Best of breed for beginners
I bought about 8 beginning rock guitar books from Amazon, and this is the best.

Several books include CDs, but this one got it right. Plays a lick for you, then gives backing for you to play it. Short and to the point, makes it easy to move from one lesson to the next.

Licks are great, the kind of sound that I like anyway- and leaves me quite impressed with my own progress. Took me about one month from start to finish, and I was really amazed how much I improved.

Author is obviously a skilled teacher, who writes to help students, not to show off.

Book only includes a touch of theory, focuses on learning fun stuff. Still I think to develop further I need additional help on understanding theory. He does introduce pentatonic scales, but doesn't explain much behind them or how to apply them. But that probably would have made the book too boring.

Highly recommended for beginners!

Recipe for Success...
Steve Chandler does an outstanding job hitting on key elements that demonstrate what is required to be successful in sales. His style of writing creates a unique way of looking at "traditional" common sense ideals of selling and can be applied to any profession.

Whenever I am having a difficult time getting motivitated, I just pick up his book and choose a chapter that will inspire me. This has already improved my sales and after giving to my salespeople I can see their improvement as well. Thank you, Steve!

The Joy of Selling
Steve Chandler, This may be your best book yet. If it's the latest, it benefits from much writing experience and refined wisdom. The only problem is that it could be titled, "The Joy of Succeeding." The principles are that generally helpful
and readable. I've just about finished the book. How do I make wholesale purchases for possible use with my clients? I teach a two-day workshop on "Effective Negotiating / Influencing." This would be a great auxiliary reference book.

The best sales book since Og Mandino!
.....I never thought there would be a better book than The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino for sheer voltage and inspiration and excitement about selling. But this is not only as inspiring as the book by the great Mandino, but it also offers so many practical ideas for how to put the joy into the process. I read from this book every day.

Contributions from such diverse and intelligent voices as Russell Baker, Cliff Stoll, David Gelernter, and Doris Grumbach elevate this collection of essays criticizing our computerized lives above the usual Luddite screeds found in the daily media. Many of the essays are skeptical of cyber-life, but even those of us who use computers constantly can gain insights into how technology may be affecting us in ways that hardly constitute progress.

Walden Pond Revisited
I had never known such a book exists until I stumbled upon it at my local bookstore. What surprised me even more was that there is a place for such a club in this world of 1,000 mhz computers and super pocket pcs.

It seems ironic that you are actually reading this review on a computer and even more so that this review was written on a pc at my work place. But isn't this book targetted more on computer users than those who never touch a computer?

Read the Lead Pencil Club manifesto, it will help you get your life back before it's all too late.

Long live the Leadites!

Voices in the wilderness
Minutes of the Lead Pencil Club is an interesting collection of bits and pieces related to the shunning of technology or the minimal use of technology. Electronic gadgets, including computers like the one on which you read this review, are complained about, fretted over, and lampooned. Some of the contributors are techies who have realized the limitations or deficiencies of modern technology over previous methods. Some contributors take after Luddites, wishing to live a simple life. This is a book that may be taken lightly or seriously. This reader found it to be a welcome voice in the wilderness of tech-dom. Using a pencil once in a while won't hurt anyone.

A celebration of the joys of an old technology
This book is an entertaining collection of short pieces that recall some of the advantages of an old technology--the lead pencil. The pieces represent a range views, ranging from a simple uneasiness with new technology to an almost total rejection of it. Still you don't have to be a technophobe to appreciate these pieces that remind us of the joys and advantages of a simpler technology and a simpler life. Many of the pieces embody the same spirit as Henry David Thoreau's chapter "Economy" in _Walden_. In fact, Thoreau is an honorary member of the Lead Pencil Club.

A Walk Through The Deepest Valley
Death and illness are tough subjects for any writer. A diary of of a writer's own illness runs the danger of either being too dark or too brave in the face of death. Suzanne Strempek Shea's account of her breast cancer treatment is neither. Shea marches cleanly down her own path, balancing her own anger and needs with the world around her. I read this book nearly a year ago, yet key passages remain with me still. Although Shea covers the life-altering details of cancer treatment, this book is more of a journal of the emotional trama caused by the disease. This is not the book for those looking for bright sunshine in the face of darkness, yet the account is very often funny. It is a real life take on how one person finds a way to deal with the most frightening thing that can be thrown at a successful person in the prime of life. Shea does her best writing when she speaks of the effect her illness is having on family and friends. Writing about music is extremely difficult, but Shea is also able to convey the healing power of music as she struggles through radiation treatment. Her way through the valley is unique and I think this book can be a useful guide for those facing adversity. Many readers seek to avoid the sadness of this type of illness account, but "Songs from a Lead-Lined Room" is one to be embraced.

Finally, an honest voice
When cancer hits you and yours, you read a lot of things in order to deal with the alien world you've been thrown into. The books are helpful, but always there is that undercurrent of, it's not so bad, you should be glad it's not worse, you should be grateful to do anything to stay alive, you should be ok with this in some way and even find life-affirming value in having cancer. Well in my experience it's not like that. Doing what you have to do in order to save your life in no way diminishes the problems, pain, and grief that you have to face. This book talks about that in a real way, and it's the only one I've read that does. It's ok to want your old life back, and it's incredibly important that you get validation for everything that you are going through. It really is that bad and you deserve to know that other people know that. This book will provide you with another voice that knows what you and yours are going through and doesn't try to minimize it. It was such a refreshing and helpful change from most books about breast cancer that I read it in one sitting on the day it came, and would recommend it to anyone that would like to hear about the experience of another real person.

an important book
This book is as much for families of those with cancer as it is for those with cancer.
First read an excerpt in Yankee Magazine in the spring. "Songs" delivers on that promise.
Despite the subject matter, the book is funnier than you would think.

Steve Wiest has proven himself to be among the very elite in the trombone universe. In this wonderful book Wiest takes both his unique musical style and taste and makes them understandable to all aspiring jazz trombonists. A must buy!

A must for every trombone player!
I've had the opportunity to play in many trombone sections with some great lead players. However, Steve Wiest is the greatest lead player I've ever had the fortune to make music with! In addition, he is one of the most creative improvisation artists on that instrument. To top it all off, he is the most humble of human beings! So, how can one not buy/read this book!?! Get it!

"FOR TROMBONE HEAVEN!"
"Buy it if you love the trombone! BUY IT, BUY IT!"
