Getting Back to Basics!
How did it happen that we've moved so far from our purpose as Christians? All creation waits for us - the Christian - to be revealed so that they too have the hope that is within us! Spurgeon once again gets us back to basics and teaches us about ourselves so that we can fulfill the call - the way God intended. I read the first half of The Soul Winner on a flight from Colorado to Ohio and could not stop the flow of tears while I once again felt God speaking to my heart and leading me back to the passion of soul winning. This book will cause your heart to break with the things that break God's heart. I am buying more and passing them along to others from church leaders to my family. Quick - get the book before it's too late - in more ways than one!

Just a great evangelism book
The most encouraging book in this area that I've read

Highly recommended reading!!!
What can compare to the joy of winning a soul to Christ? C.H. Spurgeon will have you chomping at the bit to go out and win souls, one at a time, for the Lord! This truly is a life-changing book. It is certainly the best $5 I've ever spent! If you've ever thought you weren't cut-out to be a soul winner, Spurgeon will prove you wrong! In a nutshell, soul-winning is about having a deep desire to be used by God and a painfully genuine love for your fellow man, and no one explains this as well as the timeless Spurgeon. Don't make the mistake of thinking that you must have the gift of Evangelism in order to win souls for Christ! I certainly don't have that gift, I'm just an ordinary person, but this book has been of immense practical value to me, and I have seen fruit result already. This is a must-read for Christians who want to make every day count for eternity. Soul-winning is not about following a formula, its about having a passion for the lost. Read this book and let its message rekindle the fire to share the gospel. Be among the laborers in the end time harvest! Remember, the Holy Spirit uses anyone who is willing to be used. ;-)

The Armchair Conductor : How to Lead a Symphony Orchestra in the Privacy of Your Own Home

This little book--packaged complete with baton--is a trifle cutesy in places. But along with the whimsy it provides a surprisingly good basic course in conducting, from its history through "How to hold the baton," and simple conducting patterns. It's chock full of illustrations, jokes, telling anecdotes, and conductor biographies. If you've ever waggled a finger in time to the music while listening to the radio or a compact disc or secretly yearned to lord it over a symphony orchestra, you'll find something here to enjoy.

Too bad it's out of print!
I'm a music student, and one of the courses we must take to complete our studies is conducting. This book is a great way to learn the basics, so anyone, and I mean anyone, can lead a symphony orchestra, on TV or on audio recording, in the privacy and comfort of their own home. But be warned: you'll want to conduct the minute you get to a real live concert! It's an absolute shame this book is out of print!

Because of this book, I actually conducted a live symphony!
This book will not teach you to read music or follow a musical score, but it WILL teach you to hold a baton. It will also show you in detail how to conduct the various tempi (plural for tempo). It will educate you about the various conductors and their styles. I won an opportunity to conducted a live symphony. This book gave me the confidence I needed to actually do it! Good Luck! Have Fun!

You'll Love this Book!
If you have ever conducted to the music playing in your CD player, or you went to a concert and dreamed of being the one up on the podium, then this book is for you. It's humorous and very instructional. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys conducting as much as I do.

Compensatory Adaptation: Understanding How Obstacles Can Lead to Success

A new and original way of looking at obstacles!
This book has all of what the title says in a very logical way:definition, examples and understanding of how obstacles can lead to success.
Although the term "Compensatory Adaptation" is a scientific born and used term (originally in the field of information systems),it can also be applied,or extended, to a variety of other fields such as literature, teaching, learning, sports etc.
Well written, easy to follow, and plenty of good examples that can inspire every type of reader achieve "unique results".

Turn obstacles into personal growth
Look at Helen Keller's life. Look at your life. Let Compensatory Adaptation help you develop a system that will help you turn your obstacles into personal satisfaction. A great book to read that will provide many insights and allow the reader to have a new look at threats and weaknesses. I enjoyed it very much.

Achieving success BECAUSE of personal limitations
This book is primarily about how some people achieve success as a RESULT of personal limitations (e.g., physical disabilities, lack of natural aptitude, limited skill), NOT in spite of those limitations.

The book's key message is that people who face obstacles to perform a task at a particular level of success (e.g., become a best-selling writer, while suffering from dyslexia) end up adapting their behavior in order to overcome those obstacles. That behavioral adaptation, which is called in the book "compensatory adaptation" (and which the book argues is often involuntary), ends up leading the person to do things differently - which is the key reason why the person may end up being very successful.

After all, Helen Keller (one of the people studied in the book) was both blind and deaf, and yet went on to graduate from Radcliffe College (now part of Harvard; Helen was not in special classes, and took courses with the other students while there), and become one of the most successful writers ever!

Four Steps to Responsibility: Techniques to Lead Children to Responsible Decision Making

A must have for parents
As a L&L instructor for my school district, I have a distict affinity for the L&L philosophy. However, that does not mean I heartily recommend every tape. Four Steps to Responsibility, however, is a must have for parents who wish to prepare their kids for the real world. As a parent, it is instinctual to some degree to want to save our children from the pain and anguish that can occur during childhood: by either keeping our children from making (safe) mistakes, to rescuing them in order to make their life easier and to spare them pain. The authors do an excellent job of showing how we are stealing from our kids when we do this... The authors point out that the road to wisdom is paved with mistakes, as is the road to positive self-concept and self-esteem. Only by overcoming obstacles can the children feel confident enough to handle any challenge that comes his/her way. Only by owning the problem can the child build the decision making skills that may one day keep him/her from getting in a car driven by a drunk friend-not because he/she knows that mom and dad don't know and can't get mad, but because he/she has a clear understanding about the connection between choice and consequence. Get this tape...it is great.

Loved It!
The tape is very insightful as well as extremely entertaining. I couldn't wait to get back in my car to hear more. Although the concepts are quite tough (most parents want to rescue their children) it is extremely helpful and most of all - FUN. I so enjoy watching my children problem solve and make decisions - coming up with solutions I had not thought about. Most of the time, they don't make the same mistake twice when they keep the problem on their backs. I have ordered more audiobooks in the Love and Logic series and even one I am donating to my kids school.

A "MUST HAVE" FOR ALL PARENTS AND TEACHERS.
THIS CLEARLY DEMONSRATES THE "OBLIGATION" OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS TO PREPARE KIDS FOR THE REAL WORLD BY EXPERIENCING THE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR ACTIONS INSTEAD OF ALWAYS RUNNING INTERFERENCE AND SENDING MESSAGES THAT STUNT GROWTH AND DEVELOP THE COMMON "IT'S NOT MY FAULT" ATTITUDE THAT IS SO PREVASIVE AND DESTRUCTIVE TODAY. I BELIEVE EVERY PRINCIPAL IN THE COUNTRY SHOULD HAVE THIS TAPE AND INCORPORATE ITS IDEAS AND PHILOSPHIES INTO THEIR SCHOOLS.

In the top 3, most profound books I have ever read
As a Christian for 30 years and an evangelical pastor/US Army chaplain and licensed Therapist, I have read lots and lots and lots of books. This book by Dan is truely one of the most profound books that I have ever read. It is worth reading and re-reading. His stories and narrative portions put images and real-life flesh and blood on our living out the true power of the Gospel and Christ's love into our own real-life worlds.

True Healing and Preparing for a better place.
Chapter 8 has so much to offer. Hope in the biggest since. I love what Dan Alender does with words. Some things require deep meditation. As I read I feel myself coming alive in a way I never knew before. And as I read I think of all the hurting people I know who could be helped by reading, actually taking in this book and allowing themselves to be consumed by it. True healing does come and joy returns, or for some who have never experienced true joy, will expereince it for the first time. I think everyone should read this book. I want to put it into the hands of all of my loved ones. It has done me good. I wish to share the good with others. Thank You Dan Allender, you are my hero.

This book is worth it!
This book is a lighthouse to those who are dealing with various struggles. Dr. Allender communicates to the reader exactly how to begin travelling down that healing path. He will point you to where your focus needs to be, and help you through the process. I am so thankful that I chose to read this book!

Heavy Metal Lead Guitar
Published in Hardcover by Hal Leonard Publishing Corporation (January, 1991)
Author: Troy Stetina

Used price: $13.95
Average review score:

great way to learn metal
pros
-------
-the book is in tabs
-ALOT of exercises
-work at your own pace
-points you directly to rock and metal
-cd that plays everything for you, including the six solos you'll learn

cons
-------
-must have at least one year of guitar experience.

Another Great Book from Troy Stetina!
Once again, Troy Stetina has written an awsome guitar book. Metal Lead Guitar skips the small stuff that most guitarists already know and goes straight to the techniques you need! And, this is the first book that I have seen with a section for learning to use the wammy bar! This book is slightly challenging, so I do not reccommend this if you are new to guitar, but if you have the basics down and hopefully a little more, BUY THIS BOOK! You will fall in love with it!

Wow! I Can FINALLY Play Lead Guitar!!!!!!
Don't let the title of this book mislead you. This is more than just Metal guitar...a lot more! It's Metal plus any style of rock lead guitar from the late sixties to the present. Basically, if you have an electric guitar, an amp, some form of overdive/distortion and you want to play rock lead, then you need this book.

Troy's method is unique in that he has developed a notation system that combines guitar TAB with rhythm notation, which makes it very easy to learn what is being shown. All of the material is presented in bite sized pieces along with some pretty cool licks to practice it with. Everything that is in the book is demonstrated on the CD. Each chapter concludes with a complete original song with full band backing. It's played on the CD first with the lead part and then without, so that you can hear how it should sound and then jam along with the band. So at the end of the first chapter you're already playing lead guitar! However, I would not recommend this book to someone who is just starting to learn how to play. If you're a newbie I'd recommend Troy's "Metal Lead Guitar Primer" to learn all of the basics first (written in the same format with licks and songs).

Troy also mixes in a little bit of music theory, speed exercises and improvisational technique, thus helping you to develop your own sound and style.

It's very simple: IF YOU WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY ROCK LEAD GUITAR BUY THIS BOOK!

You will want to read the entire book!
Very insightful toward the elements of the mind that allow one to continue on their familiar path, over and over again, like the eveready bunny! The path that gets you where you have always been. This book does a fine job in communicating breakthrough technology that can allow real change in our abilty to set goals and not repeat the familiar. By understanding past events one can see where there habits and decisions have come from and then, hopefully move on to a higher level. Great book for sales people and people looking for a way to access their next challenge!

This self-help book delivers!
Started listening to the audio version of THE INTERNAL FRONTIER each morning on my way into work. Boy, did it make a difference in my day! It really made me take a look at myself and it helped me to see that some of the stuff I do really gets in my own way. At the same time, though, the author gives hope and help to make a change so I don't have to keep doing the "same-old-same-old". 1999 is going to be a better year, thanks to this book!

Eye opening, incisive, and substantial
For those who are truly motivated to pursue their dreams, whether personal or professional, this book is essential. Shechtman's premise is that we all have underlying emotional patterns - our "familiar," as he refers to it - that keep us stuck. To get un-stuck, he offers a six-step process for creating new "familiars" which are in line with our goals. He also stresses the importance of creating accountability groups to help us follow through with our actions steps. I have taken a number of positive - and uncomfortable - action steps as a direct result of the book. Very well written. Full of "beef."

All Roads Lead To Murder
Who doesn't love a great mystery? I know that I do. The reason I love this book is that it is suspenseful and gripping. I was immediately drawn into the plot and the details that the author describes in the book. Not only is it a great mystery but it provides Roman history for its reader as well. It gives us a look into the Roman citizen and his life.

a fresh take on Roman mysteries
The field of mysteries set in ancient Rome is a bit crowded, with Davis, Saylor, and Roberts, but this new entry deserves to take its place at the head of the line. It features an historical character, Pliny the Younger, with his friend the historian Tacitus playing the Dr. Watson role. While traveling back to Rome in a caravan in 83 AD, they stop overnight in Smyrna. The next morning they discover that a member of the caravan has been brutally murdered. Suspects abound: a gambler who was in debt to the victim, a group of women who may be involved in occult practices, an abused slave, and several others. With no Roman magistrates on the scene, Pliny takes charge of the investigation. He soon realizes that the case is more complicated than at first appears. He must find the killer because he himself may have been the intended victim. First rate!

great new Roman mystery
If a writer wants to introduce a new series in the somewhat crowded field of Roman mysteries, he'd better have a unique twist. Albert Bell has done that. Instead of fictional sleuths, he uses historical characters, Pliny the Younger and the historian Tacitus, in the first of what promises to be a fine series. Bell combines historical knowledge, witty writing, and a plot with just enough complications and suspects to lead to a thoroughly satisfying conclusion. Pliny and Tacitus have to find out who murdered a man travelling with them while also protecting a beautiful young slave girl who may be the killer's next victim. I can't wait for the next one!

An uplifting book for those who need to feel loved
This book was very uplifting and encouraging. It puts into perspective who our first love should be, who we should seek out as our "Prince Charming". Uniquely written in Cinderella story form. Quick and easy reading. Scripture references were helpful as well as the study in the back.

Dancing in the Arms of God
This book is a must read for every christian woman. It speaks to the married as well as the unmarried. I borrowed the book from a friend a few years ago and made notes of key items that I wanted to reflect on later. I review those notes from time to time and am blessed all over again. (I actually have a tab for them in my day planner.) I have recommended this book to a number of friends, who were also blessed by Ms. Neal's words. This will definitely be a stocking stuffer for this Christmas.

An Honest Look at Rebuilding Broken Relationships
Connie Neal is one of the best authors I have read. She is honest, and shows courage in this discription of what she and her husband have victoriously overcome. Issues addressed in this book, such as depression and infidelity are everyday occurances. What is NOT so day to day is the forgiveness and love that are spoken of in this awesome book. Read it, and find out for yourself how the lives of two people become even stronger. It is not by their own strength, but by a Father who steps in where they surrender.

Finally, someone who addresses Asian American leaders
I'm about halfway through this book, but just reading the first few chapters, I could have sworn I was reading an auto-biography of myself. His experiences are just so close to what I've experienced and hit hard to where I am coming from.

Every ethnicity has it's own issues and concerns that need addressing. Paul Tok really tackles this topic with a gusto and humility that make him very approachable. Even though he is Japanese American, his experiences mimic what most Asian Americans experience. From deferring to our parents to the ridiculous heights we hold education and prestige. He gives us perspective of how he deals with these issues along with dealing with other races.

While this book is geared towards Asian Americans, I HIGHLY recommend leaders of other ethnicities to read this book. It truly shines a light on some of the issues facing Asian Americans and can give insight in how to relate to us.

I had the pleasure of meeting Paul at Urbana 2003 during a workshop he gave on this very topic. Although I hadn't read his book at the time, (and I wish I did), he came across as someone who really wants to help and empathizes with the future leaders of this generation.

Recommended Rading for Asian American Ministry
If you are a non Asian in an Asian church, this book will help you understand more. As an Asian American, Tokunaga's book has helped me understand the impact of my culture on why I act the way I do. Good practical advice as well. I can't believe some of the mistakes Tokunaga admitted to but I guess his point is that God can use any of us. On page 199, he says that our young people are leaving the church because the church is irrelevant, stifling and ill-equipped. I think that may be only true on the surface and perhaps the real reason is that our youth are prodigals, looking for boy/girl friends and freedom. The Bible study questions from Moses and Esther are very useful.

Great insight from Paul Tok on Asian American leadership...
This book is a MUST read for all Asian Americans. Paul Tok's insight into Asian American culture and leadership styles is a great resource to anyone from pastors to lay church workers to people in a work setting. Highly recommended!
