Being Connected.....
I have to admit that Mary Jo was a professor of mine, 10 (or more) years ago. I have always followed her poetry, though not when I was a student of hers. This collection reveals (again) Ms. Salter's relationship to family, to historical figures (particularly Emily Dickenson), to place and time.....Particularly important is Salter's "Elegies for Etsuko"......what a profound and felt piece of prose for a friend, a woman.....Salter says, "Given how brief a spell....happiness usually is, and the ways people are forever failing us, with time it shocks me less you didn't mind leaving the two of them behind; yes yes, I see that, I see it very well..." Salter goes on to question a gendered way of relationships, although always being deeply connected to those relationships (with her husband, her children, her students, etc.). Ms. Salter is a deeply thoughtful, grounded, intelligent and important poet (and teacher)...

Great for 1st Grade classrooms!
My first grade students love this book! It is equally valued by my gifted and also struggling students. The children use it in a story writing center to help when they need to spell a word, or get ideas. This book is arranged by themes rather than alphabetically, for example, there is a 2 page spread of food words. This helps the students who are not ready to look up words alphabetically. The pictures are bright and clear. The book is sturdy enough to survive being handled daily by several students. Easily 5 stars!!

Teh usborne book of everyday words
I think this book is fantastic and should be kept by every parent with little children, even for my own child who is now only one and half year old. She loves this book at first sight. The pictures are bright and look real in the busy everyday environment. Everytime you read it, you discover some new things. The paper quality is good and it is not easy to be damaged by my baby. The problem now I have is I have to read with my baby every page every night before she agrees to go to sleep. She likes to point to every item in the page and ask me to tell her the names.

One of the best craft books ever!
A co-worker checked this little tresurer out of our local library and I noticed it on her desk, the rest is history. Within days I was hooked and had to have a copy I could keep. I have a large craft library of books that I turn to for ideals -- Mary Jo Hiney book will be one I turn to many times.

Beautifully designed, artfully created and easily recreated.
I first found this book in a local library and had it out for weeks at a time. The pieces are created with rich style and beauty, yet they are not cookie cutter instructions. The free form lines allows for imaginative uses, but doesn't force one to recreate a beautiful pattern from scratch. It also has some fantastic photography, which also shows some wonderful ways to display the completed pieces.

Way more than the cover suggests.
Somewhere along the way I've become far too jaded, because when I first saw more pictures of sepia-stippled, faux-aged, faux-vintage cards, my spirit withered within me and unintentionally I issued a tiny faux-sigh. You know, I loved the whole walnut ink thing when it got started. But a girl has limits.

Thank goodness I realized it was a Maryjo McGraw book, and had the good sense to give this brown-hued tome a chance. Note to self; jadedness is a very bad thing, because this is one heck of a fabulous technique book.

The great thing about McGraw is that everything she does is a little bit different. She handles her gel transfers differently, does the beeswax thing in her own way, and puts a unique spin on mica layering. This book is full of her luscious innovations.

Especially to die for here is her "faux-tintype" technique. Wow, a "faux" that can still make my crafty heart go pitter-patter even after stuffing myself on all those issues of Somerset Studio. That's saying something.

money well spent!
I purchased this book for a friend of mine for her birthday...This book is so full of ideas and helpful hints that I was sorely tempted to keep it and bring her flowers instead!!!...If you enjoy great quality pictures, well written instructions and inspiring artsy examples, you want this book in your collection. Trust me, I'm hoping someone gets the 'bright' idea to get me one for MY birthday.

I love Mr. Winkle....every year I get a Mr. Winkle calendar for Christmas and he is just the cutest dog.

S. Cannedy

Had me in a fit of giggles...
I found this calendar at the mall by accident... I thought, "What the heck is THIS?!" and I'm telling you - a few pictures later... I was in a mini fit of hysterics. (oh my.. yes, that was me..) This dog is so stinkin' cute I can't stand it.
I'll be adding the Mr. Winkle books to my Wish List soon... Oh my goodness. If you need a very cute & funny calendar... it's gotta be this one. Trust me on this one. =0)

great for parents to learn to teach reading
I've had this book for a few years. It taught me how to teach my kids to read at very early ages. It's fun for kids and parents, and it gives kids a real advantage in school.

Nice Book on Phonics!
A very informative "how to" book on teaching your child to read and write using phonics. We taught our five year old using this method and he is at the top of his class!

A delightful compendium of original recipes
The Whistle Stop Cookbook is a delightful compendium of original recipes from the Irondale Cafe in Irondale, Alabama. Cafe (dubbed the "Whistle Stop" by Fannie Flagg, and owned since 1973 by Mary Jo and Bill McMichael). Mary Joy has compiled a spiral bound cornucopia of good eating recipes ranging from Buttermilk Biscuits, Skinless Fried Chicken, Cheese Grits, Refreshing Scallop Salad, Country Ham and Red-Eye Gravy, and Southern Corn Pudding to Mississippi Mud Cake, Hot Pineapple Salad, Marinated Cabbage Slaw, Banana Split Cake, Peanut Brittle Sauce, and Green Tomato Pie. Whistle Stop Cookbook is a very welcome addition to any family kitchen collection.

Yummy ..says it all!
The Irondale Cafe Cookbook is a must for every cook, young or old. The recipes are easy to follow and use ingredients that most of us keep on hand. The macaroni and cheese and rice pudding especially remind me of wonderful childhood memories that I was unable to duplicate until I found this cookbook. My copy is well worn. The recipes are full of old fashioned flavor but can be prepared in a short amount of time. This book could make a terrific cook out of someone who doesn't know how to boil water.

Foxy
The steel-jawed leghold trap has been outlawed in more than 65 nations as cruel and barbaric, but is still legal in most of the U.S.

The author wrote this true story of her lengthy encounter with a red fox in Deer Isle off the coast of Maine, partly in hopes that the tale would encourage the banning of such traps in the U.S. It had lost a foot to such a trap.

The story first appeared in a shorter version in the August 1988 issue of Cricket. Here, it runs 32 pages, and is accompanied by lavish color sketches of the wild animal, temporarily tamed by both human friend and desperate need.

What ultimately became of the fox in this story, which the author called Vicky, we'll never know. But based on her poetic reporting, readers can hope for the best.

The author engrosses even the youngest of readers in a way that is, well, foxy. Alyssa A. Lappen

A beautifully illustrated, moving story of human and fox
The pictures are beautiful and the story bitter sweet. The trap surviving fox comes to depend on the human and the human on the fox. This book should be in every child's library, and many adults' library , too.

Willa Cather's Modernism: A Study of Style and Technique

WIlla would be proud!
As a student of literature, I found this to be an insightful and delightful investigation into the works of one of America's least understood authors. Willa Cather's works, as Middleton points out, lead directly into the Modernist genre. Jo Ann Middleton has constructed an excellent analysis of this too often overlooked American author. Drawing on Cather's uniques writing style, Middleton explains Cather's techniques and style in a manner that is beneficial for literature scholar and neophyte alike.

Landmark Work
This landmark work is an insightful and brilliant analysis of the work of Cather. Valuable for Cather fans and newbies alike!
