Reading Berryman to the Dog by Wendy Taylor Carlisle
This is a fine first book, top rate poetry. The poems will haunt you with their compassionate, wry insights into the ways humans love, work, dream, and suffer loss. Some go the edge of danger, some to the bounty of joy, but all are penetrating, sharply ironic, and memorable. You won't soon forget a poem like "Questions for Joe" or "The Interview."

Gems from Darkening Porches
Jo McDougall's poems are often terse distillations of life miraculously captured in just a few lines. Sometimes she can turn a small moment upsidedown in a way that leaves you breathless. Her poems look out on life with an unflinching honesty and the apparent simplicity of her language belies the depth of her vision. From Darkening Porches is a poetic gem.

Published to accompany a two-year traveling exhibition of A. G. Rizzoli's work, Architect of Magnificent Visions is the exhibition's catalog as well as the definitive study of the life and work of this visionary artist and architect. Working by day as a humble draftsman in a small San Francisco architecture firm, the reclusive Rizzoli created his extraordinary color-ink renderings of his dream city and other visions in secret during his spare time. His meticulous, highly detailed drawings of Gothic cathedrals, skyscrapers, and domes were intended as symbolic architectural stand-ins for people he knew, particularly his mother, whom he worshipfully depicted as an elaborate fortress. Hailed by curators as "the find of the century," Rizzoli's drawings were unearthed 10 years after his death. The 94 illustrations reproduced in this beautiful volume, including 36 in full color, as well as the insightful essays by experts in the study of "outsider" art (artwork typically produced by someone untrained in the arts and that is not associated with any particular artistic or cultural movement), interpret Rizzoli's bizarre life and work in ways accessible to both scholars and the general public.

incredible mind!
i saw the exihibit of his work at the museum of modern art in S.F. it was magnificent! i could have spent days going over all the detail - i got so engrossed in every detail of his work and writings about his life..that i went back a second day ....what a sad and wonderful life this man had.

Rizzoli one of the great artists of the 20th century.
In terms of originality, vision, skill, and dedication A.G. Rizzoli may eventually stand as one of the true masters of the 20th century. An extravagant claim, perhaps, but when I compare Rizzoli with Picasso, Dali, Klee, Miro, or Duchamp I cannot help but feel that they would have all welcomed him into their august company as a true original who has expanded the creative realm of possibilites in art. Of equal interest is the manner in which Rizzoli, faced with a desolate life of lonliness due to his inability to function in a social realm, or for that matter a sexual one, took these circumstances and created an alternate reality of sublime beauty and wonder. This superb book allows all of us to share in this utopian vision and, for at least a little while, daydream, ponder, and wonder at this remarkable vision of an alternate reality. The authors, curators and restorers who have brought Rizzoli's life work to light are to be highly commended as preserving and exposing this incredible and wonderful work.

A very good book that I would reccomend to any one.
This is a book that is well worth reading. If you like stories about dogs who help people in ways that they very much needed, then this is the book for you.

An amazing story of inspiration and hope
This is an amazing story of inspiration and hope about a very special German shepherd named Grizzly, his young master who battled long and valiantly with terminal cancer, and the boy's courageous mother who was rescued from her own crippling grief by this incredible dog. Fulfilling her son's dying wish, Lana Davis began bringing Grizzly to hospitals to visit sick children, and soon began training others to do the kind of work she and Grizzly were doing. During the next six years, Lana and Grizzly co-founded two successful animal-assisted therapy organizations, including the Utah Animal-Assisted Therapy Association, trained hundreds of volunteer teams to carry on their work, and helped to heal the broken hearts of dozens of abused and emotionally troubled children. Today, though blind, Grizzly continues to inspire others with his almost unbelievable intuition for discerning what people need, be it his special brand of talk or a furry body to hug.

Here's what some early reviewers have said about this book:

"I cried throughout this incredibly moving book. It proves what I claimed in Dogs Never Lie About Love, that dogs have a greater capacity for love than do humans. And they are more sensitive, and wiser and more compassionate, the list goes on and on. This book shows the profound love and compassion that dogs feel, mysteriously and wonderfully, for us. A book for anyone who loves dogs, and children, and the love between dogs and children." - Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, author of Dogs Never Lie About Love and When Elephants Weep.

"Do not be fooled into believing that this is merely a book about a brave boy, a mother with a fierce and tender heart, and their uncannily intelligent dog. It is, of course, about these things but, more important, it is about relationships and about healing. The Good Shepherd teaches us just how broad and strong and miraculous the horizon of relationships can be when we include animals in the mix as friends, family, and--yes--as mentors and healers." - Susan McElroy, author of Animals as Teachers and Healers, in her Foreward to The Good Shepherd

"This book of love and courage demonstrates the healing powers of animals when our hearts are open to them. It gives new meaning to being 'touched by an angel.' Many angels are animals, and many animals become angels in our lives." -Dr. Michael W. Fox, veterinarian and author of The Soul of the Wolf and numerous other books.

"Tears of sadness and tears of joy streamed down my face as story after story opened my heart to the love, miracles, and healing shared by Grizzly and Lana. A must-read for all animal-lovers." - Dr. Allen M. Schoen, author of Love, Miracles, and Animal Healing

"Jo Coudert's words touch one like gentle hands on an animal--and reach the same level of communication." - Betty White, actress and author

"After reading The Good Shepherd, no one can doubt the ability of animals to teach and heal. Readers will enjoy abundant moving stories of troubled individuals changed by the power of the human-animal bond and animal-assisted therapy. Following the examples of Lana and Grizzly, I hope thousands of people-animal teams will seek training to share their special kind of love with people in need in their own families and communities." - Linda Hines, President and CEO, Delta Society

This 1997 resource is invaluable for the inquiring heart..
Heart Fitness for Life's content is much broader than the title indicates. It addresses many basic issues and goes into enough detail to answer questions/concerns from patients and releatives.

After having reviewed and read 18 or more books on heart disease, I can say with confidence that McGowan's book is the best without qualification. Heart books date very quickly but Heart Fitness addressed Homocystein issue and genes in concise style that was easy to understand.

My only suggestion for the next edition would be to address the "stress" as one of the signficant risk factors. Saplosky's, Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers" is a useful update on stress related disease and the linkag to our hearts.

Dr. Ornish's and Dr. MacDougal's books would make positive companion's to this book and are worth considering.

I strongly recommend McGowan's not as the "first" comprehenisive approach to her topic but as the "most current" on the every changing field of caridology.

A guide to controlling or reversing heart disease.
This one of the only books which lives up to the promotion of itself on the cover. It covers the spectrum of treatments for coronary artery disease. It is written in a very interseting and readable form. This is a terrific resource for patients. It offers hope and means to overcome the number killer in the U.S.

Perfect Herbs for the Garden
With this book you will read and read again.  What better compliment can a book and its author receive?

The emphasis here is on pizzazz for the garden. But, it is not fussy plants with difficult requirements, Ms. Gardner is suggesting, rather the uncomplicated perfection of blooming herbs. What could be easier than herbs? Plants that are disregarded as weeds by the unknowing, but prized by those who value their tenacious and giving nature. And, since Ms. Gardner gardens in Nova Scotia, a zone 4 climate, she is very familiar with the word difficult.

Indeed one of the aspects of this book that makes it valuable is her familiarity with colder zones. Another plus is that she is truly a gardener. How do we know? Because only a gardener would describe Catmint as smelling like Cinnamon. This book is full of personal revelations that come only from experience. Experience that we can benefit from by reading this book.

Eighty herbs are profiled for their value in beautifying the landscape or garden. There are many photos of her selections, including photos of more unusual herbs like Dittany. Also, while discussing Oregano, for example, she mentions numerous kinds, which brings the number of herbs discussed to around 700.

Herbs in Bloom: a simply perfect idea.

HERBS IN BLOOM a perfect complement to LIVING WITH HERBS
"The layout, illustrations and photographs are marvelous; the font and leading easy to read; the use of bluish-lavender for the boxed quotations and plant names not only attractive but easy on the eyes; the common name cross-reference a special boon. There are many flowers I would never have thought of as herbs, but the concise definition of herbs in your preface cleared up my previous misconceptions...HERBS IN BLOOM is a perfect complement to LIVING WITH HERBS."

Wonderful!
It has enough going on that you can't put it down. There's not only the romance between Matt and Sara. There's also the fact that someone is stealing company secrets, and that Jim(Sara's boss) was also interested in Sara. Altogether, it couldn't be put down!

Romantic comedy at its best!
If you like fun, romantic books with sexy heroes, HUSBAND 101 is for you. I laughed and sighed all the way through. You'll love the list of 30 ways to entice a man. I read a lot of romances, and this one gets 5 stars!

Very useful resource and learning tool
This comprehensive overview of decorative painting includes historic American, European and Asian styles. More important to me, however, was the basic information about developing a personal technique, varieties of materials available, practical information about finishes, and more. This book should be the cornerstone of any decorative painting collection.

Jo Sonja's Guide to Decorative Painting
I am totally in awe of this book. Not only has Jo Sonja collected exquisite photographs of folk art from all over the world, she has also provided wonderful instructions for creating each of the styles on your own--and added notes for developing your own personal style. In the next millenia, Jo Sonja will be remembered for her work as one of the great folk artists of this century.
