The I Never Cooked Before Cookbook
This is the best cookbook ever! You will stop feeling inept in the kitchen because the recipes are readable and doable. Please reprint. My book is brown and in several parts. I need a new one and my son definitely needs to have one.

A classic, well-loved favorite!
I knew just by the name of this cookbook that I needed it when I first bought it 18 years ago. It is still in my kitchen, I still use it all the time, and I still love it! But I need a new copy because it is turning brown with age and it is held together with tape. As the author writes in the foreword, this book is for those who "would like clear directions on how to cook the basic foods, who are well aware that foods can be braised, flambéed, and souffléed but who are really only interested . . . in getting a decent, well-cooked meal on the table with the least amount of trauma." I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to cook and serve respectable, even delicious, meals but who has other things they would far rather do than spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I hope this book will be republished, if not---buy it used!

It's exactly what it says it is
If you've never cooked at all and suddenly find yourself forced to do it and you have no idea where to get started, this is the book to pick up. There's nothing like it. It's exactly what any fumblefingered bachelor needs. Why is it out of print?

The Edison Trait : Saving the Spirit of Your Free-Thinking Child in a Conforming World
Published in Hardcover by Crown (29 April, 1997)
Author: Ph.D. Lucy Jo Palladino
Amazon base price: $24.00
Used price: $40.00
Collectible price: $42.35

Lucy Jo Palladino defines the Edison Trait (named after Thomas Edison) as divergent vs. convergent thinking. Edison Trait kids--one in five children--have the qualities that make innovative leaders, inventors, explorers, yet they often have a hard time in school where their personality traits may be seen as weak or negative. Palladino recasts these children in a positive light and gives specifics on understanding and becoming an ally for your Edison Trait child. The book is convincing, reassuring, and accessible. Perhaps it will help parents of nonconforming kids resist the pressure to make their kids "just fit in."

OPRAH, put this book on your book of the month club.
I have NEVER been so excited about a book before. With every page and chapter I felt as if the author had come to live in my house for the last 5 years and then write the story of "my household". How she describes your home as a "war zone" (mine literally was), how many times I read a phrase of another Edison Trait parent and then asked my self "how many times have I said or felt that". How many times the actions of a child was described and I would say "oh my god, my child does exactly that". Not only do I FINALLY have a diagnosis for my "hard to be told, argumentative, rambunctious (sp?), always have to have the last word, imaginitive, always does first then ask later, bright, loving 10 year old child" , I now have the tools to teach and help myself to understand and teach my child in the loving POSITIVE way she deserves. I have also been enlightened to how my child feels. This was truely a gift (Thank you Dr. Pallandino) in that it helped me to see that I had been hurting and alienating my daughter by my anger, words and frustrations. What parent wants to hurt their child? I have practiced some of the techniques suggested by Dr. Pallandino with my child and have seen dramatic results. Any time I see a child with the Edison Traits I recognize, I want to go to their parents and tell them that there is light at the end of the tunnel and it is in this book. Because Oprah is such a roll model for literally millions of people, I wish she would feature this book on her book of the month club or at the very least have a show about Edison Trait children. What greater way is there to help a child than to begin with educating the parents. I want to stand on the highest mountain and shout out to the world that if you have a child that you just can't handle or understand then PLEASE, PLEASE do your child a favor, and yourself and READ THIS BOOK. You will feel as though you were blind but now have the gift of sight. I welcome any online discussion with other parents on the topic of this book, please feel free to contact me at my e-mail address.

Finally credit to the kids who will be our future leaders!
Though they don't conform to the traditional standards expected in classroom behavior, "Edison kids" thoroughly absorb what is taught to them in their learning style. As we like to say in special ed., there is no such thing as a learning disability, only a teaching disability! Lucy Jo Palladino has captured the
essence of these bright and wonderful children who CAN learn with the right teacher. I'm so glad parents have this resourceful book available to them! It will surely bring forth the pride they should have in their children who simply learn differently! In the perfect world, all children will be matched with the teacher who can best meet their needs. In the real world, Edison kids are labeled as ADHD or SED. Read this book and know your child, so you can be his/her advocate when discussing placement and needs.

Will help you understand your child.
I now understand my child so much better after reading this book.

A Brace of Bloodhounds
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (July, 1997)
Author: Virginia Lanier
Amazon base price: $23.00
Used price: $6.25
Collectible price: $21.18
Set in a locale and a culture as rich and satisfying as good Southern cooking, Virginia Lanier's A Brace of Bloodhounds continues the adventures of JoBeth Sidden. JoBeth's a feisty Southern gal with an attitude, whose devotion to her highly trained and trusted bloodhounds involves her in kidnapping, corruption, drug smuggling, and every ornery law-enforcement puzzle that comes to light in her South Georgia town on the edge of the Okeefenokee Swamp. Lanier's adrenalin-pumping narratives, which began with The House on Bloodhound Lane and continued in Death in Bloodhound Red and Blind Bloodhound Justice, are told by JoBeth, who is alternately pulled and pushed by her loves: her extended family of friends and trainers, and her wonderful and appealing bloodhounds. In this volume, JoBeth seeks answers to a petition from beyond the grave, unearths a child molester, and faces a renegade alligator who threatens her pups. Along the way, we learn the rich details of mantrailing, Southern hospitality, modern moonshining, and--of course--romance. Those who have already made the acquaintance of Lanier's appealing family of characters will enjoy this installment. Newcomers will be thrilled that there are other books in the series. Pour a glass of fresh-made iced tea, kick back, and travel into the heart of this colorful and intriguing world. --Barbara Schlieper

Superb Reading
I have read all of Virginia Lanier's books (date of review 8/7/00). All five are full of excitement and suspense as well as romance and humor.

Being a dog lover myself, I was fascinated by the nuances of caring for, training, and working with bloodhounds.

I just finished her last book in the series and I will sorely miss Jo Beth and her adventures into the swamp with her magnificent dogs. I am eagerly awaiting the next one!

Virginia Lanier you need to write faster!!!
I first read about Virginia Lanier's books in a Jacksonville Florida Times Union Article and maybe because it was about dogs ... I was curious so I bought her first book ... Death In Bloodhound Lane ... actually I bought the second one at the same time ... Good thing because I couldn't wait to dive into House on Bloodhound Lane. I waited a whole two weeks before caving in and buying A Brace of Bloodhounds in hardcover. And now I must wait until July to read her next book. I read a lot ... but Virginia Lanier captures me on page one and doesn't let go until I reach the end ... and then I want to read more. I do not understand why she isn't way up there on the Best Seller list ... if you love dogs ... Sue Grafton .... Mary Higgins Clark ... John Grisham ... and the South, etc. ...pick one of her books up .... you'll see!

With sorrow
I just learned that my new favorite Author has died. I had just finished a Brace of Bloodhounds and was looking for the next installment. Mrs. Lanier died while I was reading this book. I was late in finding this great series and I will miss this character greatly. Thanks Mrs Lanier for a great series.

I'm a Marathoner
This is the first review I've ever written on Amazon. This book made such a difference in my life, I had to comment on it. Six months ago I decided I needed to do something to get in better shape. I was in decent shape, I played raquet ball a few times a week, but I couldn't run more than a mile and really didn't have any interest in doing so. I came across the book title on Amazon and decided to check it out. I read the book while on vacation and decided I was going to run a marathon. I did the pre-training for a week and then began the program. Then the most important part, I started telling friends and family I was going to run a marathon.

I finished my first marathon yesterday( 10/28/01) in Mystic, Connecticut, in four hours and 51 minutes. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I learned that the marathon was the reward and the training was the goal. During my training I read a number of marathon books, they all had helpful advice, but none were as important as this book. It was a guide, a reference and logbook. Its no longer just a book, its a memoir of the journey to my first marathon!

It Worked for Me!
After buying this book, I started training in June 2000 with the aim to run the Cape Cod Marathon at the end of October. While physically fit at age 32, I had never run a marathon nor ran even three miles since college.

The book was a terrific step-by-step guide in achieving the goal of running a marathon. Whenever I had a question during the training program, it seemed the book would anticipate it and answer it in the next chapter. The mental preparation they advise really works and confirms the fact that it plays just as important a part in running a marathon as the physical.

And the simple fact for me to prove the book's worth is that I finsihed the Cape Cod Marathon in 4 hours 44 minutes. Not to mention that it was run in sub-freezing temperatures with snow by the end of the race. The book was so effective in my training, however, that I had no doubt I would finish the race.

I would recommend this title to all novice marathoners...

Christmas to Boston - Three Short Months & 26 Long Miles
My wife and I were not really runners. We ran for general fitness and no more than five miles at a time, a couple of times a week. In late December 2000 we learned that some of our, more dedicated, running buddies were planning to run the Boston Marathon. Two had run it and the Dublin Marathons the year previously.
On a cold and miserable January Sunday morning, after an absence from running for at least six months, we were on our way to meet the group and fulfill mumbled New Years promises. "Why not" we echoed almost in unison, and the decision to run the Marathon was made. The rashness of youth!
Decision made we joined in the training programme the others were following. I, however, needed more information on nutrition, stretching, approach etc and went looking for a book. It is a difficult thing to select a book on Marathon Training from the veritable library available; I bought up the first one I saw!
"The Non Runners Marathon Trainer" was a bit heavy on jargon, visualisation, "Marathoners" etc to start with. However, I soon realised that gems of information such as 'not setting a completion time for your first marathon' and 'not being afraid to walk stages if necessary' were the secret to success.
We were fit enough to get into the training without too much trouble. The book made clear that the real battle was the mental one. The approach taken helped me overcome my inherent laziness and Fiona her uncertainties; she ran a 4.03 and I a 3.56. She put her time down to having gotten her 'head straight'. My training was hampered by an injury and a lazy head and I wouldn't have finished if I didn't understand the mental aspect of the day.
We intend to run the London Marathon this year and my brother is at this minute buying the book as part of his preparation for the trot.

The Omega Diet: The Lifesaving Nutritional Program Based on the Diet of the Island of Crete

Is it really possible that eating more fat is the key to better health? It depends on the fat, according to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos. The Omega Plan shows, in great detail, the difference between omega-3 fats, those found in fish and some green vegetables, and omega-6 fats, which are found in most meats and vegetable oils. The former have heart-protective and cancer-preventive properties; the latter, he writes, cause obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression, and a host of other ills. Omega-3 fats are at the heart of his plan, along with ample servings of fruits and vegetables. Unlike diets based on deprivation, Simopoulos offers some fairly lush food choices, including an ounce of cheese every day. Best of all, The Omega Plan is bursting with so much useful information about food shopping and preparation that you'll be able to use its advice the second you put the book down.

Effective, nutritious food plan
I first heard about the so-called Mediterranean diet from my doctor, who suggested I try this way of eating to lower my cholesterol and lose weight. I found this book to be well written and easy for the lay person to follow. I am happy to report that after only 8 weeks of following the food principles suggested, I lost 14 pounds without effort, and my "bad" cholesterol dropped 30 points and total cholesterol dropped 35 points. I am very happy with these results. I despise traditional low fat diets and don't think that I could stick with one of them over the long haul. However, this diet is very different because it includes healthy fats and oils. For the first time I have hope that I can follow a healthy food plan for life without feeling deprived. My results are proof that one can lose weight and lower cholesterol while eating healthy fats. After about the third week on this food plan, I also experienced a big improvement in my mood; the effects of a healthy fat diet upon the brain were explained in the text as one of the many other "benefits" of the Mediteranean food plan. This is the first time I have tried a diet and actually felt happier on it than before!

A Plan to Live With
Dr. Artemis Simopoulos and Jo Robinson have written a straightfoward and inspiring book about simple guidelines that produce wonderful health benefits. I have been able to stick happily to their dietary recommendations, because the diet is not only satisfying but has improved my energy and moood. The recipes are simple to prepare and always good, and the shopping advice is helpful and practical. I have been able to lose unwanted weight and mimimize some of my chronic problems, such as chronic fatigue and PMS. Although I've read about the importance of food diaries before, I could never quite bring myself to keep one. But, the way it was presented in this book, with the sample page, led me to give it a try and that has been unexpectedly helpful in determining the best foods for me. The greatest benefit of using the book's ideas on a daily basis, however, is that I feel happier to feel healthier and experience an even mood. I am very grateful to the authors and recommend this book to anyone seeking balanced health painlessly and naturally.

A delicious way to lower your cholesterol and live longer!
I lowered my cholesterol by almost 30 points in just one month by following the dietary guidelines set forth in this informative book! This book is well-written, using scientific data to back up its claims. Plus the recipes are easy to make, using easy-to-find ingredients, and are delicious as well! This book has completely transformed my eating habits for the better - I feel better, am healthier, and even enjoy cooking (something that has always been such a chore in the past). Thank you, Ms. Simopoulos!!!

Superb
Don't be put off by the somewhat depressing central subject matter of this book (alcoholism). I was, and put off reading it until I'd run out of Putney's other excellent books. I'm sorry I left it for last - it is one of the best romances ever written. You can skip the book in this series that comes before it though ("The Diabolical Baron", which is a real "Regency" ie - a bit of a snooze). One does not require reading the other, first.

Another for my top ten list.....
Reginald Davenport is an alcoholic. Alys Weston is a gifted businesswoman and estate manager living a life of lies layered on one another like an onion. What an unlikely pairing - but it works! Reginald's cousin opens the door to his transformation by restoring an estate to him which had been unlawfully withheld; however, it is up to Reginald to walk through that door. The book traces Reginald's journey, as Alys becomes a reluctant companion along the path. That the two fall in love is not surprising; what makes it interesting, is that in the end, it is Alys's flaws that threaten to destroy their relationship, and not Reginald's addiction.

Reginald's character is written so well - it's as if MJP was able to get inside the head of an addicted person and those around him who either collaborate with the addiction, or try to neutralize it. This story has credibility and depth, and is one that I'll be recommending to my friends. Excellent job.

One of the best romance novels
This is a re-write of one of the best romance stories ever written. Period. Full stop. Mary Jo Putney displays her mastery of psychologically realistic characters, Regency England detail and sensual story telling. Her heroine, Alys, is intelligent, resourceful and independent but hurting because of her lack of faith in her own feminine appeal. Her hero, Reggie, is the ultimate gorgeous bad boy. He has wasted his own talents and intelligence on reckless living but has been given a chance to redeem his life, if only he can face up to his alcoholism. This rewrite heats up the sensuality and takes nothing away from the impact of the original. Ms. Putney manages not only to deal with a serious problem realistically and sensitively, but does so while building sexual tension, introducing lively secondary characters and making us fall in love with her wryly self aware main characters whose dialogue sparkles with insight and humour. Ms. Putney is a thinking person's romance writer and should be on the A list of anyone who loves a good story well told.

Beautiful and Encouraging
This book gives a glimpse into how we live our daily lives. Just like Much-Afraid we travel through the Valley of Loss and walk along the Sea of Loneliness. We always must trust God no matter where He asks us to go, no matter what He asks He do. Like Much-Afraid we will encounter Pride, Anger, and Jealousy and we will call on the Shepherd and He will help us. The seed of true love was planted in Much-Afraid's heart and when she reached the High Places she finally learned what it felt like to be truly loved. The love we experience in this world is nothing compared to the love Jesus has for us. He wants to love and help you but you must ask for Him to. The journey to the High Places is a hard one Much-Afraid learns but the destination is well worth the journey. Learning to give our entire life to Jesus is hard but the reward of knowing Him is more amazing than anything we could ever want or desire. My favorite part of this book was when the Lord asked Much-Afraid what she would do if He lied to her and her reply was "My Lord-if you can decieve me, you may. It can make no difference. I must love you as long as I continue to exist. I cannot live without loving you." I know personally I could not live without God in my life and taking care of me and I hope everyone that reads this review feels the same way.

A Comforting Book
This is an extended allegory taken from Habakkuk 3:19 about God making one's feet like hind's feet in overcoming difficulties in life. The author talks about observing the animals in action for herself and discovering that "their motion was one of the most beautiful examples of exultant and apparently effortless ease in surmounting obstacles which I have ever seen." The reference to hind's feet is also found in Psalms 18:33.

The first chapter starts with an invitation to the high places. It is in the concluding few chapters that she reconnects back to the book's primary theme. Numerous Christians have been encouraged by this book and chances are you will be too.

Beautiful & Encouraging
I first read this beautifully written book several years ago, when I was going through a not-so-happy time in my life. It is a beautiful and encouraging story, especially for Christians, but also for anyone who has suffered in life (my sister read this book & loved it, and she is not a religious person at all). The allegory is wonderful... Much Afraid's crippled feet represent an inability to walk successfully alone and reach higher places. Her twisted mouth represents the speaking of shameful, wrong, or cowardly things that don't befit a servant of the Lord... or perhaps an inability to speak her true heart. Her companions are called Sorrow & Suffering... but when they are revealed in true form, you will cry with understanding! All in all, you'll certainly adore this book if you read it, especially if you are troubled or just discovering God. I know I did.

Blind Bloodhound Justice

Virginia Lanier gets the fourth adventure of her heroine, Jo Beth Sidden, off to a brisk start, and keeps up the pace with her canine trackers all the way to a thrilling conclusion in the murky interior of the Okefenokee Swamp. Jo Beth is a steel magnolia who talks as tough as she is, packs a gun, and saves her softest feelings for man's best friends. In Blind Bloodhound Justice she solves a 30-year-old crime in less time than it takes to train a posse of law enforcement officers in the fine points of handling search and rescue dogs. That process alone is worth the read, but Lanier's fans have a lot more in store for them: another confrontation with her crazed, abusive ex-husband Bubba, a continuation of her on-again off-again romance with handsome sheriff Hank Cribbs, and the miraculous recovery of a blind-from-birth bloodhound who has a special place in Jo Beth's heart. Lanier's first mystery, Death in Bloodhound Red, was published when she was 63 years old, and it won a passel of awards, including the Agatha, Macavity, and Anthony. A southern Georgia resident, she writes so knowledgeably about the Okefenokee that the reader can feel the pull of the quicksand and the sting of the chiggers, and while her heroine is a bit too sharp-tongued and belligerent to be particularly lovable, her canine characters are totally captivating. --Jane Adams

FAST PACED EDGE OF SEAT EXCITEMENT
Once again Virginia Lanier's riveting story of bloodhound sleuthing was worth the wait. I read it in 11 non stop exciting hours. Virginia Lanier manages to tell several different stories all wrapped together in one book. She also captures the essence of small town southern living. I'm sure I will think about the story and the characters for several months while I patiently wait for her next Bloodhound book. These stories pull you in and make you feel like your part of the story, running through the woods with Jo Beth sidden and her trusty man trailers hot on someone's scent. I hope Virginia Lanier will continue to write books about Jo Beth Sidden and her wonderful and colorful bloodhounds.

Blood hounds are Best
I read the first book in this bloodhound series while travelling through the Okefenokee Swamp on vacation in 1996. I have eagerly anticipated each subsequent addition. Anyone with a love of animals, a love of mysteries, a love of gutsy women, or a love of southern colloquialisms will relish each book. I do encourage everyone to read them in order. In fact, due to an impending birth , I have been homebound, and just finished reading the first four books all over. I wait with bated breath for the fifth one to arrive. Jo Beth, Jasmine, Wayne, Hank, and all of the other fascinating cast of characters are captivating and unique. However, it's Bobby Lee, Melanie, Ashley, and all of the bloodhounds who make the books come to life.

Another great installment
Just want to recommend this book, I actually enjoyed it more than the others. Well told, and after reading the other books in this series, you are really feeling like you know the characters and can identify with them. The very end is wonderful, and I can't wait to read the next.

Great character and unique setting
Just finished Death in Bloodhound Red after discovering it in a bag of unread books inadvertently packed away in my basement. Thank goodness I was on vacation, since I read until 3:30 in the morning and then resumed over a late breakfast. What a great read, fresh and unusual, a welcome change from the tired plots where I've guessed the outcome 20 pages into the book. I love strong female protagaonists and Jo Beth fits the bill. She's smart, feisty, caring and wary, comfortable with who she is and how she came to be that way. I enjoyed the look into the world of bloodhound training and rescue searches, gritty details and all, and I appreciated Ms. Lanier's evocation of her southern setting. I've just ordered everything else (except a puppy) in the series, thank-you Amazon, and can't wait to get them. I may have to take another week of vacation to hang out with Jo Beth!

A suspenseful, atmospheric Southern mystery
I enjoyed this intricately plotted, suspenseful, atmospheric mystery very much. The people are vividly portrayed, especially our heroine, Jo Beth Sidden, a "staunch but not militant feminist" and Georgia good ol' girl. The descriptions, particularly of the perilous treks through the Okefenokee Swamp, capture the imagination and transport you directly to the Deep South. The bloodhounds come to life too: These dogs are real, not mere background props. The bloodhound lore -- history, training, how these amazing animals do their tracking, their gentle and affectionate disposition -- is fascinating. And cat fanciers will be delighted to find a feline among all the canines. There's a good chance fans of Sue Grafton, Margaret Maron, Sara Paretsky, Susan Conant, B.J. Oliphant/A.J. Orde, and Nevada Barr will like this book, which is followed by four sequels so far.

House on Bloodhound Lane
A Must read series - All of Viriginia Lanier's books. The characters come alive on each page. Her description of loving and smart bloodhounds will endear you to them forever. You can't wait to read what happens next. A true treasure of a character is Joe Beth, a woman detective and her bloodhounds.

When Your Body Gets the Blues: The Clinically Proven Program for Women Who Feel Tired and Stressed and Eat Too Much

Do you feel drowsy, sluggish, tense, moody, and disinterested in sex? Do you have trouble sleeping, controlling your eating (especially sweets), and concentrating? If you answered yes to several of these questions, you may have the "body blues" (or "vegetative depressive symptoms"). Authors Marie-Annette Brown and Jo Robinson name these blues, which are caused by low or fluctuating hormones, "women's most misdiagnosed, undertreated, and mistreated mood problem." To combat the body blues, Brown, Robinson, and colleagues at the University of Washington developed "LEVITY" therapy based on three activities: increasing exposure to natural light, walking outside five or more times a week, and taking six inexpensive vitamins and minerals.

When Your Body Gets the Blues explains the causes and symptoms of the syndrome, illustrated by numerous case studies; the authors' research study and supporting science behind LEVITY therapy; the LEVITY program; and easy ways to put it into action. For example, you can double the amount of light you receive by looking straight ahead instead of at the ground when walking outside, and a see-through umbrella helps you get the benefits of natural light when walking in the rain. The program makes sense and is easy to implement. When Your Body Gets the Blues is recommended for women who are tired of being dominated by mood swings, fatigue, emotional eating, and stress. --Joan Price

When Your Body Gets the Blues:
The book is a great resource refernce and will help many readers. It could have been a little more "reader friendly". The products reviewed are extremely helpful and proven especially "Levity" - the vitamin supplement.

When Your Body Gets the Blues
This book is a rarity - science-based,yet easy to read, and loaded with helpful examples. Dr. Brown, the author, writes with compassion, and enthusiasm, sharing some of her own experiences with the program she and Jo Robinson devised. It made me wonder how many women might have been misdiagnosed as clinically depressed, and medicated, when only their BODIES were "blue". This is a cheerful, inexpensive, and eminently do-able program that makes sense and works. I received a number of inquiries from friends who'd seen my copy of the book, so it's making the rounds now!

Body Blues overview from a Nurse.
...After reading this book I know we can offer more choices and options for our needed patients. The material is sound and it falls into line with healthy eating, and positive exercise, using more light is the same concept we have been offering to patients for a some time now.
My only negative feedback about this book is they do not offer any assistance with light therapy products and devices, or locations to purchase them...
I think the authors did a great job with the book. I feel strongly enough about this book, I recommend it to the patients at our hospital for review to help in their recovery.
