So good I read it twice in one week!
I stumbled upon this book by mistake, and it was so "right on target" that I came to see if she other books.

I have been managing panic attacks and anxiety for over 10 years. This book explains the "so what" approach ~ and while it seems so simple .....it made so much sense to me.

If you have anxiety, panic, or depression I reccommend this book with more than 5 stars.

The absolute guide to true understanding of panic & anxiety
I have been a sufferer of Panic Disorder and generalized anxiety for 17 years. In my constant quest for relief I have read an enormous amount of material on the subject in addition to taking medications, therapy, and of course visiting a cardiologist. I was amazed on finding this book of little over 100 pages, to explain my disorder clearly and in very simple terms and direct me (at last) to proper treatment. After you read it you'll have to ask yourself why no one else explained it this way or even bothered to explain it at all! It is not full of testimonials or life stories. Just the facts and compassionate understanding from the author who also has suffered. This is AA for Panic and Anxiety.

Power Religion: The Selling Out of the Evangelical Church?

Should be required reading for all church leaders.
Many of the issues up for discussion are simply based upon the age-old debate between, semi-Pelagianism and Augustinianism. However the contributers adroitly cut through the flesh and get at the heart of contemporary church issues. This debate is not over a matter of style. But rather it accurately raises the concern as to what constitutes true Christian religion. If some of the points that are raised are indeed correct, one would have to wonder if authentic Christian faith even exists within much of the current church milieu. These articles should not be treated lightly but rather with fear and trembling.

Fantastic
This is a fantastic book, covering clearly many aspects which challenge and threaten the church and the truth of the gospel.

Beatifully touching
Yet again, Angela Thomas Guffey has touched reader's hearts with her beautiful and eloquent prayers. She knows how to put to words so many of the emotions that one experiences as a Christian mother. With everything, she goes to God in prayer. It is such a comfort to know that He is with you every step of the way.

Not just for new mothers
Angela Guffey, in her new book, Prayers for New Mothers, will touch the hearts of mothers of all ages and stages of life. She has captured the emotions and memories of motherhood. Some prayers took me back to a memory of my child at that age or stage, and I felt so blessed and thankful to have that memory restored with such clarity. Other prayers were specific to needs and situations that I am dealing with now. These prayers encouraged me to press on and to continue on my journey to become the mother that God wants me to be. Many of these prayers also touched deeper personal emotions that I thought no one else would understand. The prayer was a reminder that God knows our every thought and feeling and desires to comfort us. Joy also came from the eloquent expression of these emotions from such an experienced mom.

Preaching For God's Glory (Today's Issues)

Short and sweet
Begg's 48-page, 6-chapter work is a breath of fresh air into the preaching world. Begg's argument for expository preaching and his chapter on "Practical Pointers" is exceptional - any preacher, whether they agree with expository preaching or not, should read this book. Anyone who does will come away with a greater realization of the magnitude and importance of preaching the Word of God to our world today.

Preaching For God's Glory by Alistair Begg
Alistair Begg's comments on the importance of expository preaching are a must-read for those handling God's Word. As usual, his insights are invaluable. This book is a credit to its field and should be read and applied by pastors and laity. All Christians are called to the Great Commission, and this book is a practical way of presenting Jesus and Him crucified to a lost world. I thank God for faithful, uncompromising preachers and teachers, such as Alistair Begg.

Press Bias and Politics : How the Media Frame Controversial Issues
Published in Paperback by Praeger Publishers (30 September, 2002)
Author: Jim A. Kuypers
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

an excellent contribution
The argument over media bias has generated a lot more heat than light. This book is an exception! Kuypers has come up with a very interesting way of approaching the bias question: compare the content of political speeches with the content of the reporting about those speeches. Substantial differences in content point toward distortions introduced by the news process.

This is an innovation in media studies--a sensible innovation.

The Nature of Press Bias
I wanted to share with you how this book charts the effects the printed press--and by extension, broadcast media--have upon the messages of political and social leaders when they discuss controversial issues. Through examination of almost 700 press reports on race and homosexuality that were published in 116 different newspapers, this book meticulously documents a liberal political bias in mainstream news. This bias hurts the democratic process in general by ignoring non-mainstream left positions and vilifying many moderate and the vast majority of right-leaning positions. Thus, only a narrow brand of liberal thought is supported by the press; all other positions are denigrated or ignored. By comparatively analyzing press reports and the events that occassioned the coverage, this book paints a detailed picture of the politics of the American press; advances four distinct reportorial practices through which the press injects bias into its reporting; and argues forcefully that the mainstream press in America is an anti-democratic institution. The mainstream press in America operate within a narrow range of liberal beliefs. Those with more conservative views will certainly feel the brunt of the press's bias. However, those who embrace moderate political beliefs will be hurt when they step to the right of the press position. The press will actively help certain politicians and social leaders on the left who espouse the same view of the country that the press has adopted. However, those who step beyond this narrow brand of liberal reporting, moving even further to the left, will be ignored or denigrated. In this manner, then, the American press acts to shut out the full range of political voices in the country.

Fully Half of the Right Answer--Bi-Partisan and Serious
The authors provide a coherent discussion of fully half of the security challenges facing us in the 21st century. They wisely avoid the debate swirling around the so-called Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA)-but deserve credit for their predecessor "offset strategy"-and simply note that the absence of "A List" threats gives us an opportunity to strengthen and maintain our traditional nuclear and conventional capabilities against the day when a Russia or China may rise in hostility against us. The book as a whole focuses on the "B List" threats, including Russia in chaos, a hostile China acting aggressively within its region, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and catastrophic terrorism. They note, correctly, that most of the spending and effort today is focused on responding to the crisis de jure, some but not enough resources are applied to preparing for the future, and virtually nothing is being done against the latest concept, that of "shaping" the environment through "forward engagement." Perhaps most importantly, they introduce the term "defense by other means" and comment on the obstacles, both within the Administration and on the Hill, to getting support and funding for non-military activities with profound security benefits.

Although others may focus on their discussion of Russia and NATO as the core of the book, what I found most helpful and worthwhile was the straight-forward and thoughtful discussion of the need for a new national strategy, a new paradigm, for dealing with potentially catastrophic terrorism. Their understanding of what defense resources can be applied, and of the impediments to success that exist today between state & local law enforcement, federal capabilities such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and defense as well as overseas diplomatic and intelligence capabilities, inspire them to propose several innovative approaches to this challenge. The legal and budgetary implications of their proposals are daunting but essential-their proposals for dealing with this one challenge would be helpful in restructuring the entire U.S. government to better integrate political-diplomatic-military-law enforcement operations with judicial and congressional oversight as well as truly all-source intelligence support.

Interesting side notes include 1) the early discovery in US-Russian military discussions that technology interoperability and future collaboration required the surmounting of many obstacles associated with decades of isolated (and often secret) development; 2) the absence of intelligence from the entire book-by this account, US defense leaders spend virtually all of their time in direct operational discussions with their most important counterparts, and there is very little day to day attention to strategic analysis, estimative intelligence, or coordination with diplomatic, economic, and law enforcement counterparts at home; 3) the difficulty of finding a carrier to send to Taiwan at a time when we had 12 carriers-only four appear to have been "real" for defense purposes; and 4) the notable absence of Australia from the discussion of security in Asia.

The concept of Preventive Defense is holistic (requiring the simultaneous uses of other aspects of national power including diplomacy and economic assistance) but places the Department of Defense in a central role as the provider of realigned resources, military-to-military contacts, and logistics support to actual implementation. Unfortunately the concept of Preventive Defense has been narrowly focused (its greatest success has been the dismantling of former Soviet nuclear weapons in the Commonwealth of Independent States), and neither the joint staff nor the services are willing to give up funds for weapons and manpower in order to make a strategy of Preventive Defense possible.

This resistance bodes ill for the other half of the 21st Century security challenge, what the author's call the "C List"-the Rwandas, Somalias, Haitis and Indonesias. They themselves are unwilling to acknowledge C List threats as being vital to U.S. security in the long-term (as AIDS is now recognized). I would, however, agree with them on one important point: the current budget for defense should be repurposed toward readiness, preparing for the future, and their concept of preventive defense, and it should not be frittered away on "C List" contingencies-new funds must be found to create and sustain America's Preventive Diplomacy and its Operations Other Than War (OOTW) capabilities. It will fall to someone else to integrate their concept of Preventive Defense with the emerging concepts of Preventive Diplomacy, International Tribunals, and a 21st Century Marshall Plan for the festering zones of conflict in Africa, Arabia, Asia, and the Americas--zone where ethnic fault lines, criminal gangs, border disputes, and shortages of water, food, energy, and medicine all come together to create a breeding ground for modern plagues that will surely come across our water's edge in the future. On balance, through, this book makes the top grade for serious bi-partisan dialogue, and they deserve a lot of credit for defining solutions for the first half of our security challenges in the 21st Century.

Quick Read About an Important Subject
This is a quick read about how American Defense has to change from the Cold War strategy to deal with other types of threats. I just returned from Europe and heard from European friends about their feelings on the United States. We are highly respected and looked up to as "the" power. We need to deal with the rest of the world accordingly. The authors give us some ideas as to how to do this.

Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel

Helps bring clarity to the Christian faith
Even though the lectures given in this book were spoken over a hundred years ago, in the 1880s, it impressed me how well they address the current state of affairs in the Christian church. In many instances, the situations Walther describes fit exactly with today's. Although the 39 evening lectures were originally given and directed to men in training to become pastors, I believe all Christian laypeople can greatly benefit from reading this volume.

The primary goal of the 25 theses laid out in the book were to clarify the two distinctive teachings of the Bible: the Law and the Gospel. The Law, as summarized in the 10 Commandments shows our sinfulness and the punishment we deserve for violating the law. The Gospel, however, is the joyous proclamation of Christ resurrected, and His conquering of sin and death. In this we find our comfort as Christians, knowing that although the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life in Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23). The significance of what Walther discusses in these theses, is that when we confuse Law and Gospel, try to separate one from the other, or only teach one of these doctrines, we invariably distort the true teaching of Scripture and lead people astray despite our intentions. When applied to our daily study of the Scriptures, church teaching, and other aspects of the Christian life, the distinction of Law and Gospel provides profound insight into the Bible. Many confusing parts of the Bible, especially parts that may seem contradictory are clarified when we see the distinction of Law and Gospel.

Overall, I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in a clearer understanding the teachings of the Bible. Although the book may seem intimidating (its ~415 pages long), it is broken up into 39 lectures as I mentioned before, and each is about an hour's worth of reading. The lectures were also given in an informal style, so it's not overly difficult reading (occasionally the English is a slightly different from today's usage since the translation isn't very recent, but it isn't archaiac by any means). And finally, what really makes this an excellent book is that it is Christ-centered.

A classical Christian work written in America
In the never-ending human struggle to determine right and wrong, to live the golden rule, to live in peace with our fellow man, we often forget what the basic message of the Bible really is. C.F.W. Walther, president of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and also president of Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO, presented a series of "lectures" on the proper distinction between Law and Gospel. This book is the compilation of those lectures. Walther never intended that these be published; however, his students felt that the contents of Walther's lectures was too good to be ignored. Gathering together their notes, they put together this volume which is still a primary resource for pastors today. It is worth your while to read this book and to look at the basics of the Christian faith.

Must have learning tool
Clearly explains important concepts. Though not updated for V5.0, this is the book to have for rapid understanding of VFP, especially if you're a 2.x developer. It's the kind of book you *wish* was included in the product package.

Great Book! You'll get more treasure with each reading!
This is a book you will not want your employer to buy for you, because you'll want to own this book! Of the 896 pages in this book, there is almost no fluff ! In fact, this book is so good that I readily agree with one of the authors when he says, "it's a really good idea for you to read this report" (book), "more than once." Given the opportunity, I plan to re-read this book at least once. There is simply too much good material to absorb in just one reading.

I have finished three of four sections of this book, and I'm partly done with the fourth section. The section I have not finished is Robert Green's report on Developing Client/Server Applications with Visual FoxPro and SQL Server. The only reason I have not finished that section is that it is not immediately relevant to my employer...but it will be relevant later.

The three sections I've finished are: Visual FoxPro Data Dictionary by Doug Hennig; Visual FoxPro Form Designer by Stephen A. Sawyer; Object-Oriented Programming with Visual FoxPro by David Frankenbach.

Visual FoxPro Data Dictionary by Doug Hennig, covers: An introduction to the Data Dictionary; Databases; Tables and Indexes; Relations; Buffering and Transactions; Referential Integrity, Triggers, and Stored Procedures; Connections and Views; Extending the DBC; and other miscellaneous stuff.

Visual FoxPro Form Designer by Stephen A. Sawyer, covers: Visual FoxPro Forms - An Overview; The Form Designer; Common Members; The Form Object; The Form's DataEnvironment Object; Basic Control Objects; The List Controls - ComboBox and ListBox Controls; The Grid Control Object; Special-Purpose Control Objects; Form Coordination and Interaction; and Potpourri.

Object-Oriented Programming with Visual FoxPro by David Frankenbach, covers: Object-Oriented Programming Concepts; Techniques and Details; Applying Object-Oriented Programming; The Object Inspector; Advanced Topics; and other miscellaneous stuff.

With the advent of Visual FoxPro we now have not only many new capabilities but in some respect a new vocabulary and way of thinking. This book covers each of these all of these. The authors compare and contrast FoxPro 2.x with Visual FoxPro in order to clarify issues and to help FoxPro programmers to rapidly become productive in any version of Visual FoxPro. They explain well the difference between Databases and tables, and the importance of local and remote views. They explain how FoxPro was a graphical, and event driven, relational database management system, and how Visual FoxPro is Trigger sensitive, Wizard enhanced, Object-Oriented, Client/server, relational database management system with OLE controls, Transaction processing, Data buffering and a Data Dictionary enforcing Referential Integrity.

On a purely intellectual level the section on Object-Oriented Programming is probably the most important. However, the section on the Data Dictionary, at least in the near term, will be far more practical and useful! Both sections deserve to be read at least twice. The section on Object-Oriented Programming will probably need some concentrated effort, and to fully take advantage of it and Visual FoxPro's new capabilities will require a change of mindset. Object-Oriented Programming is perhaps the greatest advance in software development in 15 years and I'm glad that FoxPro now has its share of the pie.

This one's a keeper! If you can hang on to it.
Have you ever read a book and then ordered copies for special people you know... people who just might need a measure of what the book is about?

Then do yourself - and them - a favor and get Proverbial Wisdom & Common Sense. I'm reading it again more slowly, and am just amazed at how relevant it is to what is going on in the world today.

Thoughts from the author
As the author of the book, it wouldn't be fair for me to rate it, but I would like to tell people what the book is about. Proverbs is a perennial favorite in Christian reading. I have written a devotional commentary, divided into short daily readings, to help you digest the teachings of Proverbs. I always relate my discussion to contemporary topics and issues and bring a knowledge of Jewish interpretation to the task.

A Wise Study
A lot of women roll their eyes at any mention of the "Proverbs Woman," thinking they'll never measure up to the super-woman image of the one in Proverbs 31. Robin takes us beyond that knee-jerk reaction, to open up understanding of the godly qualities all of Proverbs teach for women. I appreciated her ability to distill and organize the considerable advice of Proverbs, and present it with real-to-life stories that helped me see myself. Robin also sprinkled the book with memorable quotes. I especially liked this from Fredrick Buechner in Wishful Thinking: "The place where God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet." Robin gives proper place to purpose (as opposed to frenetic activity), advocacy, control of the tongue, service, and stewardship. It's a book you could read several times and discover new things every time.

A Wise Woman Speaks...
Robin Chaddock is a wise woman on a journey....she takes us into that perilous land of the "Proverbial Woman". This woman of Proverbs 31 is someone I have never known what to do with....admire or ignore. Robin takes us through the gifts of the Proverbial Woman and how they apply in our own lives. She serves these to us in a wonderful buffet, that made me sit at the table, examine each serving..and take the time to "chew" on these ideas for awhile.
