5 for the history and 5 for the future
This was a special issue of the Whole Earth Review to celebrate 30 years of change. It's amazing how much of the original material is still interesting and to realize how far ahead of the curve Steward Brand was.

I found the real value in the new interviews with people who were the leaders in the 60's and 70's about what they think is important now. The two viewpoints, 30 years of maturity as it were, makes this more than just a trip to the past. If the WEC/WER didn't change your mind, you weren't paying attention.

It was our bible
If you were a sudent at the time of Still Nash and Young, Chicago Transit Autohority, "Jesus freaks" and protests against Vietnam war you must have bought the original version of this book. Full of facts, names, adresses, direct advice on sensitive subjects. It was our bible. This book is full of practical and inspiring solutions for free people like you and me.

A Must Read
Rev. Elder Nancy Wilson's ground-breaking book is a must read for GLBT spiritulists.

Gentle Stretching, understanding difference in the church
Wow, what an experience. This book doesn't try to apologise for being gay or lesbian friendly, affirming and encouraging. The author gently relates a history of a people totally focussed on loving God but who must continually demonstrate their resilience and love for a church which does not accept homosexuality or transgendered people. It is unlikely that anyone will instantly agree with each tenet of the author but Rev Wilson does take an orderly, sensitive approach to helping us see historical perspectives which have often been misread or mistranslated and so have lead to incredibly severe persecution of sexual minorities. Rev Wilson then goes on to stretch our views of what a truly inclusive church could look like. I was challenged, sometimes unable to hold the book or think about what I was told and sometimes unable to put it down. A great primer for people new to the gay/lesbian scene or caring people who want to understand more.

Go and have fun! get -Out There-
If you're looking for an adventure, this is one book that you should have.

The creative team behind Crimson is back. The caricature-like artwork greatly done by Humberto Ramos, and the clear and fast-paced story-telling of Brian Augustyn make for a book that is simple and captivating.

The story takes place in El Doarado City (E D City as its resident would call it), where the residents (namely the parents and town officials) made a deal with a sinister character named Dreadalus, to keep their city prosperous and safe in exchange for some favors. The favor was pretty simple -- to help Dreadalus invade Earth.

Four highschool kids, a woman reverend, and a really big guy is their city's only hope.
Join our unlikely heroes as they try to fend off a much more powerful adversary.

Overkill : Repairing the Damage Caused by Our Unhealthy Obsession with Germs, Antibiotics, and Antibacterial Products

Authors: Kimberly Thompson, Debra Fulghum, and Debra Fulghum Bruce
Amazon base price: $24.95

Popping antibiotics to quiet every ear infection has been likened to dropping nuclear bombs to quiet every enemy. Simply put, it's overkill. Risk assessment expert Kimberly M. Thompson, Sc.D., beseeches individuals to become germ savvy in order to prevent new, more resistant bacteria from reaching epidemic proportions. Busting myths and highlighting facts about food safety, cleaning products, medicines, and immune systems, Thompson plows through 31 common illnesses "that are treated--and mistreated--with antibiotics." Each segment briefly describes the ailment and its causes, signs, and symptoms. Thompson also provides specific preventive measures and treatment options for each illness, based on the reader's "RQ," or Risk Quotient (determined via an initial survey that assesses one's personal health risk profile). Those who score a low RQ for bacterial infection receive gentle prescriptions: avoid, hydrate, wash, supplement, immunize. Folks in the medium- to high-risk categories will find information about herbal remedies, helpful foods, or salves; they might also find direct orders to stop smoking, spend more time exercising, or "work with your doctor." A useful primer on food-borne and household pathogens, recipes for natural cleaners, and special attention to high-risk populations (including children and immune-compromised people) round out this vital home resource. --Liane Thomas

A must read for all health-savvy Americans
Overkill serves up a blend of well-written commentary on the very operation of our medical system in a clear and concise manner, along with examples practical enough to apply to all of our lives. By virtue of assessments, readers can experience why levels of resistance continue to rise year after year, generation after generation. Seemingly innocuous chemicals designed to better your well-being often disarm potent antibacterial drugs from doing their prescribed job. It was only a few decades ago that penicillin was the panacea for Americans the nation over, but continued use has left many requiring higher and higher allotments -- subsequently leading to its virtual impotency. Before you down another pill or take a spoonful of medicine, pick-up a copy -- you'll be glad you did.

Great Book
This book is a wake up call! Thank you!

Oxford textbook of public health, 4th Edition, 2002
This is a three volume "heavy" textbook, both in weight but certainly also in the scope of its content and the basis for learning public health from an international perspective. This fourth edition is dedicated to professor Walter W Holland, who was the original founding editor of the textbook first published in 1984. The present editors are affiliated with UCLA School of Public Health, Department of Public Health at the University of Glasgow, Department of Community Health at University of Auckland and National Institute of Health and Nutrition in Tokyo.
The first volume presents the scope, the second presents the methods and the third the practice of public health with a total of 101 chapters from close to 200 international contributors
Each chapter is extensive both in its research, details and scope with relevant references and suggested bibliography. It is truly comprehensive in its international scale and the editors must be congratulated for making a clear, consistent and easy read textbook. The subject of bioterrorism with reference to the antrax scare and other possibilities in the wake of the Twin Tower attack is reviewed from a public health aspect. The index extensive.
My own interests of child public health, adolescence, disability and mental retardation were well rewarded with fine chapters and a scholary discussions of even the current classifications of disability, handicap and intellectual disability. The chapter on adolescence had fine suggestions for health policies on a local and global basis.
This is an important book that should be found at every public health library and at the side of specialists in public health medicine.

...

Third edition has been available for some time
The third edition of this excellent survey of public health has been available for some time now, I would encourage readers to request that rather than the out-dated second editio

Same War, Different "Enemies"
Never mind fighting terrorism and the Taliban. America's conflicting values put it at war with itself and make it seek scapegoats abroad. Merton speaks to us across two generations to show how the hatred and evil in us spread across oceans to infect those who become our enemies.

But Merton does not bash America or Americans. He provides a vital antidote to the disinformation that passes as news reports in our media, which are just as clueless as we are in understanding the whys and wherefores of our current crisis.

So do yourself a favor. Turn off the TV and the radio, set aside the newspapers and magazines, and read this book. You'll swear as I do that Merton could have written it yesterday. Substitute "terrorism" for "cold war" and "communism" while you're reading, and you'll see what I mean. There's still time for enlightenment and wisdom to triumph over ignorance and vanity if enough of us can learn to tell the difference.

Working for Social Justice
A great book that lists many essays of Merton during the 60's, including some that orignally appeared in the Catholic Worker Newspaper. Many on non-violence, others on important figures of that time. I especially enjoyed the piece on Malcolm X.

Pastors of Promise: Pointing to Character and Hope As the Keys to Fruitful Shepherding (The Hayford Pastors Series)
Published in Paperback by Regal Books (September, 1998)
Author: Jack W. Hayford
Amazon base price: $11.99
Used price: $7.50
Average review score:

An EXCELLENT guide to understanding Spirit-Led Shepherding.
In "Pastors of Promise," Jack Hayford, Senior Pastor of The Church On The Way (located in Van Nuys, California) calls fellow pastors in ministry to a deeper, more passionate fellowship with Christ. He challenges them to focus on worship and pastoral humanity before methods. With his insightful and compassionate mentoring, Pastor Jack helps the reader understand what it takes to cultivate God's promise of fruitfulness in one's life as a shepherd. This book offers passion, compassion and promise for the pastors and challenges the readers to reflect on the 'big picture' - from God's perspective. . The common thread that runs through this book is: "Worship through Servant-Hood."

The Church has a place of spiritual mission to preach and reach the world with the Gospel and lay loving hands on the sick to heal and deliver the oppressed. The ministry of the Church is to extend through every member of the Body of Christ, facilitated by worship and pastoral leadership. However, this vision and the mission of the church can only come after the discipline of personal devotion. Pastor Jack points out that worship and servant-hood are to be pastoral priorities. It is the fountainhead of everything the Church will ever have - God's presence, His power, the guidance of the Word and the Holy Spirit, the healing of souls, bodies, families, and the evangelism of the lost.

This book has been a timely word. One of the more refreshing attributes found in this book is the fact that Pastor Jack always avoids disputes on matters where Christians disagree, and defends those beliefs which Christians hold in common. His work has transcended denominational lines. My personal ministry has been greatly impacted by this book. This book is a very enlightening and refreshing work of the Holy Spirit through Pastor Jack Hayford.

Encouragement and exhortation for all in ministry!
Do you ever feel like your ministry is going no where ? Have you ever wrestled with thoughts of giving up ? Pastor Jack shares very candidly from his first call over 25 years ago, from wondering where he was going, to why was he there; if you have ever struggled with God's call on your life then pick up this book! Paul told Timothy to "fan into flame the gift of God in you"; now, Pastor Jack tells us how to do that! Pastor Jack has been blessed with an awesome gift of expression via the pen, and this is the *best* If you or someone you know is in a church leadership position, get this book into their hands! In a word, awesome!

The Pathway Of Roses
I have the hardback copy of this book, an Absolute Must Have. Christian D. Larson was a human being of wonderful enlightenment and I find his words to be truly enchanting. I recommend this book with Highest Regard, a treasure indeed!

If Traditional Religion Is A Difficult Subject.
After attempting to understand and incorporate religious beliefs into my life, all I have experienced is confusion, conflicting events, and plenty of guilt at not being able to follow any certain path of spirituality. I believe there is something guiding our paths in life, like it or not, but it has too many names that lock you down to a certain brand of religion. In The Pathway of Roses, there is God and Spirituality. Period. The words are gentle, guiltfree to accept and believe what is comfortable within ourselves. This book does not promise that if you believe in God or Spirituality you will be healty, wealthy or wise. When you read this book, it lets the you feel OK about whatever is happening in the life you lead. All of the things we wish for, are there somewhere in our present lives. The words of encouragement are there for the taking. Quiet reminders to reflect on what we do have. I used passages from this book at my Mother's funeral to help comfort myself and anyone who chose to listen to the words. I first read this book when it belonged to a friend, bought my own copy, now I give it to special friends as special gifts.

"Pathways" Is a Model of Clear Thinking and Clean Writing
"Pathways of the Brain" is one of those rare works of high scholarship that is immediately accessible to the general reader. Painstaking in its explanation of a complex subject, it never plods. Its prose, comprehensible even when addressing the most technical subject matter, rises on delightful occasion to dry wit. A lesson for academics too lazy to write well and a must-read for anybody -- expert and layperson alike -- fascinated by the miracle of human language: I highly recommend it.

Pathways Of The Brain, by Sydney M. Lamb
Here is a book that transcends the perceived complexity of its subject because Professor Sydney Lamb engages readers with his approach. He tells us that to study a piece of glass we must look at it, not through it! And right there, being a poet rather than a linguistics specialist, I was hooked. It has been for me like going to the vaulted sanctum where the archives of knowledge are kept, and finding a note on the door saying, "The door's not locked--come in."

There is a philosophical thread of humor that runs through this book. It shows up in numerous methaphors and similitudes, which are--after all--the most profoundly effective means of communicating with any newcomer to specialized material. They encourage the reader to understand things that may not seem too complex to the author because he has already solved the puzzle. More than once I thought, this is like listening to Joseph Campbell talking about The Power of Myth with Bill Moyers.

I think Pathways To The Brain lives up to its claim that it will engage the mind of any thoughtful person interested in language or the brain.
