How To Create A Media Conglomerate From Scratch!
Many have watched with dismay as conglomerates have gobbled up an increasing number of media companies. This collaborative effort between the New Press and New York University's (NYU) Departments of Culture and Communications, Education, and Journalism addresses that concern. Experts ranging from practitioners to academics were invited to participate in a lecture series hosted by NYU in 1996. Edited versions of their talks appear in this volume. An introduction by media scholar Todd Gitlin is followed by nine individually authored chapters covering media activities from radio and television to newspapers and book publishing. Surveying changes in telecommunications, Aufderheide (communication, American Univ.) calls for public vigilance and a middle ground between the apocalyptic doomsayers and those who believe the new age of communication has dawned. This book will be of value to media scholars as well as to citizens following this issue.

How To Create A Media Conglomerate From Scratch

This book is quite insightful, especially for a Southeast Asian media professional like myself. I recommend this book to everyone, even to those who work in the upper regions of the power sturcture of the media conglomerates critiqued in the collection.

For starters, it is a wonderful overview of how the media economy is shifting all over the world. The US market is saturated, as the book said, and the rest of the world is ripe for picking, especially my country, the Philippines.

This book is a tool to launch our own media analysis of what's happenning in our own countries. And from an analysis, we launch a critique, and from a critique, we launch steps to face the situation.

This book, published by New Media, is invaluable. I first read about it in an issue of Utne Reader. I took down the title and hunted it down in Amazon. I found it, bought it, and consumed it. I loved it because it gave me useful insights to work with.

This is a book I will dog-ear in my attempts to understand what to do in my field, and how to start my own media conglomerate from scratch. I already have my ideas, which I hope aren't just soundbites in my head.

Essays providing insight into a growing area of concern.
It is difficult to read Conglomerates and not be alarmed at the growing media control by a few major companies. The book begins with an insightful introduction by noted scholar Todd Gitlin and includes essays from Mark Crispin Miller (Johns Hopkins scholar and author of Boxed In) and David Leiberman (USA Today), among other prominent writers. One discrepency occurs with Lieberman's piece: it is listed in the table of contents as "Conglomerates, News, and Children", but in the chapter it is referred to as "Conglomerates, News, and the Media," leaving the reader to decide the correct version. This book is a must have if you want to gain an understanding of what's happening with media monopolies; Bagdikian fans rejoice! However, it is not chalk full o' references, so students looking for cites to follow may be disappointed. In the introduction, Gitlin echos an earlier statement by Niel Postman (author of Amusing Ourselves to Death): "Big Brother isn't looming, Brave New World is."

Excellent Summaries of Sociology and Economic Papers
This book is basically a massive collection of indepth summaries (usually about 2-4 pages long) of the points made by major papers in the fields of sociology and economics (mainly somewhat "liberal" works). Frequently essays and papers include a lot of information that is simply filler or is unnecessary explaination of already established concepts. This book eliminates that but leaves all the main points and main support of those points intact. This book summarizes just short of 100 essays and divides them into 10 parts: Scope and Definition; Consumption in the Affluent Society; Family, Gender, and Socialization; the History of Consumer Society; Foundations of Economic Theories of Consumption; Critques and Alernatives in Economic Theory; Perpetuating Consumer Culture: Media, Advertising and Wants Creation; Consumption and the Environment; Globalization and Consumer Culture; and Visions of an Alternative.

Some of the summaries are of essays from writers such as: Juliet Schor, Alan Durning, John Kenneth Galbraith (Forward also written by him), Colin Campbell, Frank Ackerman, and (of course) many others.

There are name and subject indexes in the back and a table of contents in the front, so it is very easy to find a particular essay's summary or just find summaries of essays on the subjects/by the authors you are interested in. In addition, each summary begins with a formal citation of the essay being summarized. This is a great way of finding good articles on various subjects!

I highly recommend this book as a tool for finding good essays, as a reference book on various economics and sociology subjects, or as an introductory book to major sociology and economic theories.

Analytical summaries of the best of the literature
The "Frontier Issues in Economic Thought" summaries, along with the overview essays, provide a markedly different service from the standard collection of abstracts. The series will benefit not only scholarly work but the application of our best thinking to the problems of the times.

-- Kenneth Prewitt President, Social Sciences Research Council

A comprehensive, easy-to-read survey of the literature.
THE CONSUMER SOCIETY is an exceptionally timely and incisive work. Much of the current national dialogue on environmental politics is disabled by the notion that our citizens harbor two incompatible drives: more material goods and a healthy environment. Underlying that common wisdom is the neoclassical conception of human motivation that has become so widely rooted in the media. This book provides an mportant sociological and historical critique of the highly abstract neoclassical view.

The presentation of the material, with clear and comprehensive essays for each section, and brief summaries for each of the outside authors, make this book exceptionally accessible. It should be widely used by political and environmental scholars and in college classrooms as well.

HealthCare Policy that's Practical, Pragmatic and Possible
Simply the most lucid and positive look at the health care system written in the past 10 years. Dr. Crooks takes takes a different view of Health Care Policy---and suggests a breathtakingly straightforward approach to re-thinking the roles we all play in the system. Forget the elaborate schemes that mis-align objectives in our system today.....forget being at odds with your physician or insuror or employer or employee. Take the time to read this and think about how you could make a difference if you only incorporated one of Dr. Crooks ideas into your life or your work. You will never think about health care in the same way again.

A Masterpiece for Generations to Come
One of the best books ever written about health care is Creating Covenants: Healing Health Care in the New Millennium.

Dr. Crooks masterfully gives the reader insights, unlike any other healthcare professional, into the root causes of the challenges the health care industry is facing today.

If we all followed her wisdom and deep respect for the covenant between healer and patient, we as a society would leave a legacy of caring and great integrity for countless future generations.

The must read for any health care professional.
Dr. Crooks takes a dynamic look at the relationship between patient and caregiver; how the sacred covenant between the two has been broken and what can be done to mend it and our struggling US health care system.

I consider this book a must read for any health care professional from practicing physician to product manager. Building relationships is important in any industry, but within health care, without a strong patient-caregiver bond all other efforts to improve our system will not succeed.

A rare and complex tale sublimated into masterful drama
The source of "The Fire and the Rain" lies, as is common knowledge in The Mahabharatha. It is an obscure story which a certain sage narrates to the Pandavas, and to a lay reader, passes off as insignificant.

What however, Girish Karnad has done is to transform it into a masterful piece of drama by depicting conflicting human emotions through the characters. It is an excellent combination of the elements--human, metaphysical and supernatural that constitute the core of the play. Karnad successfully makes use of the divine element--especially in the climax where the hero holds a conversation with the Gods, and the final result of the rain pouring on a drought-ridden land.

The play also focusses both on the negative and positive human emotions--jealousy, betrayal, deceit, as well as selfless love (evidenced by the hero and the heroine, Nittilai)and sacrifice. The hero, like most of Karnad's heroes is a man torn between moral righteousness, love and duty. It is interesting to trace this path of the hero to its fitting end.

Karnad has stated that "the play lived in my mind for 37 years" before assuming its present form. It is in short, a splendid culmination of his creative intelligence. As stated earlier, the story is so obscure that none gives a second thought to it, and to translate the same to a play requires immense skill, which is evidenced by the book. It only shows that with each of his play, Girish Karnad is only getting better.

A must read!

A Great Play for Global Audiences
This is probably different from other book reviews because I have read the play, and seen an excellent theater production of it too. It is the combined effect of the two that remains in my mind; during both phases the experience was gripping and the effects linger even today.

I have waited for a long time for Girish Karnad to return to his roots in theater, after his sojourn in the world of cinema and commercial movie making. In my opinion, he has exceeded all expectations. The Fire and the Rain is a complex play that weaves contemperory and ancient, Indian and European themes and metaphors.

It is a must read (and perform) GrecoVedic tragedy for theater buffs of all cultures around the world. It is so insightful in its observation of fundamental human behavior, and theatrically so malleable that its relevance to local contexts and audiences, worldwide, will be obvious. It is truly a play for global audiences, transcending political, cultural, and geographic boundaries.

Great Book !
I haven't read a better book in recent times. It's another great piece of work from a person so talented. A must read.

Cybersafety, Surfing Safely Online
This is the book I've been searching for! My kids and I both use the Internet, but since they are more adept than I am at web-surfing and chatrooms, I needed to become savvy at heading off the dangers they could encounter. Joan Vos MacDonald provides a much needed map of the terrain, and specifics on how to avoid and deflect trouble. Cybersafety is sensible and respectful of both parents and kids, undermining neither. Now, I can talk to my kids without being alarmist or playing cop, and I also have a better appreciation for their choices and activities on the Net. I highly recommend Cybersafety, especially to read aloud and discuss!

An excellent practical guide
I found a lot of very good, practical information for keeping safe on-line. I thought the writing was clear and easy to understand. I've bought two additional copies to send to young people in my family who use the web a lot.

Cybersafety in an insecure world
Joan Vos MacDonald has managed to give us web-surfers a much-needed security blanket. She has written an insightful book that makes us aware of the ignorance, and, perhaps, naivete, with which we approach the worldwide web. If any of us assumed that surfing the internet was a secure and, somewhat innocuous, exercise, Cybersafety: Surfing Safely Online has brought our mistaken assumptions to light. This book should be on everyone's MUST READ list, and should make its way to every parents Christmas stocking.

One of the best devotionals ever-and a bargain!
This is a book that has come in and out of my life over and over again because of its ability to quiet my anxious mind and strengthen my weak faith. It is a selection of thoughts from 17th and 18th century spiritual writers from the pietist and quietist traditions. One would never know that, however, since each page still burns with relevancy for any troubled soul. Devotionals come and go but this one has stood the test of time. For 8$, this cannot be beat. You may wonder how you ever got along without it!

DAILY STRENGTH FOR DAILY NEEDS
I can't begin to count the many times this daily devotional has given me patience, guidance, comfort, strength, etc..... Years ago, I began dog-earring the best readings..... Now, about 75% of the book is dog-earred......I guess I'll use sticky tabs now!

A wonderful devotional book with classic truths of God.
This classic devotional book has excellent selections that remind you of the truth that God has brought to us thru His Son Jesus Christ. This compilation brings wisdom into your devotional life. A super choice for those who wish to grow closer to God.

Excellent study bible for men!
Have reviewed this bible for use in a men's bible study. Excellent tracks that are meaningful for guys in the front, with expansions throughout (a chain reference approach) so you can drill down as deep as need to.

Because it is a NLT (new living translation), somewhat obscure meanings are clearly translated into meaningful every day modern English, which guys can quickly grasp without any extra work.

If you want to study the bible, and if you're a guy, you really should consider this bible. It's laid out for simple usage, but with profound results for men.

An important part of my day
Briscoe's daily studies are organized in topical tracks, each of which are connected to a chapter of the Bible. I spent my youth in the pew's of Briscoe's church (Elmbrook, outside of MKE) before moving to the east coast. These daily studies are like a beautiful voice from my past, urging me (with all Briscoe's humor and intelligence) to strive to be the man God wants me to be. If you enjoy Chambers or Tozer, this will be of great use to you.

Daily Study Bible for Men
Very easy to understand. I would like to find a similar version for women as gift.

Daughters of the Goddess: Studies of Healing, Identity and Empowerment

"Daughters" Speaks Eloquently to Male Readers, Too
The prudent man who sets foot upon the Goddess/Gaian path quickly learns to listen, and very carefully, to whatever companions with whom he is fortunate to share the journey. This is at once both exhilarating and sensible, since the majority of one's companions is likely to be female, and they are drawn to the Goddess/Gaian path by experiences, perceptions and myriad desires that often have no clearly drawn counterparts within the male sphere.

This is why Wendy Griffin's "Daughters of the Goddess," a 13-essay survey of contemporary Feminist Witchcraft and Goddess Spirituality by British and American writers, is potentially so rewarding to male readers. Much is in this book, pointedly subtitled "Studies of Healing, Identity & Empowerment," that even the most thoughtful of men might otherwise never encounter, assimilate and, if they so choose, embrace.

"Who are the Daughters of the Goddess?" Griffin asks in her introduction. "They are women in the United States and Britain who may call themselves Witches, neo-pagans, pagans, Goddesses, Goddess women, spiritual feminists, Gaians, members of the Fellowship of Isis, Druids, and none of these names."

They are also indirectly or directly our companions, gentlemen, and whether or not they acknowledge us as such, if we fail to encounter them, fully, it's our considerable loss. "Daughters of the Goddess" offers an engaging look at the scope of what men might gain instead through a fuller understanding.

Griffin herself is that rarest of academic essayists, blending rigorous observational discipline with a narrative lyricism that is at times almost painfully beautiful. But she can sting, as well; consider her comment in a recent interview:

"If being on the Goddess Path means doing personal magic, dressing up like fairies, dancing through the woods and nothing else, it is pure escapism. Patriarchy should love it."

And so, gentlemen, if you find yourself scratching your head over what "patriarchy" has to do with Goddess/Gaian spirituality, please purchase this challenging, wonderful book and open yourself up to the voices of the 13 fiercely eloquent women Griffin has so skillfully brought together between its covers.

Thirteen excellent essays on the Goddess
"There are thirteen excellent essays, each written by experts in their field on interesting topics around the themes of the book - healing, identity and empowerment...Each essay stands alone and could be read by someone with only a sketchy background in Goddess Spirituality, while at the same time, informing the most seasoned exponent...Wendy Griffin's book highlights a truth known to humanistic psychologists...If one follows an idea through to the end, its opposite is also true. In Griffin's case, the experiential is the academic; by being with the Goddess, however we know her, we are doing thealogy research. Very definitely a book that left me wanting more."

Good introduction to the subject
A number of books are available on the subject of goddess religion, but few offer the breadth of information in this volume. Although academic in approach, the essays are accessible and well-written, and include practitioners as well as theorists. I especially enjoyed the participant/ observer essay on belly-dancing as feminist religion; its inclusion typifies Griffin's open approach. Good for the serious, intelligent reader.

Before you take prozac
Forget about "touchy feely" talk about herbal remedies. If you're a skeptic, this book will change your mind about St. John's Wort and what BRAND you buy. Covers a staggering number of therapies in great detail: some you probably know like electric shock therapy, Prozac and cognitive therapy. Other lesser known therapies include Omega-3, 5-HTP, SAM-e, and Tyrosine. The author did his homework. Citing numerous clinical trials, studies, and on-line news groups, I found this reading a bit overwhelming or too dry at times, but only because of the author's thorough investigation. All in all, it was well worth it. Makes your doctors sit up and take notes when you talk about how YOU want to treat your depression. (that alone is worth it). An excellent reference that grows with you as your treatment for depression evolves.

Both in-depth and easy to understand
This book covers everything, and I mean everything in the realm of non-drug and non-electroshock therapies for depression. Each chapter goes into great detail both on background and practical application for each therapy, whether it's nutritional supplements, cognitive therapy, bodywork, or medical causes and their treatments. Even if you want to continue with drug therapy, this book is useful for the "what next?" or "what can I do in addition?" stages. It's also well-written, with very human flashes of humor.

Excellent review of alternatives for treating depression.
This book covers many alternatives to treating depression, most of which employ readily obtainable vitamins and herbs, or feature cognitive or exercise programs. The author urges readers to rate the options as they read each chapter, and to return to those that appeared promising. Many treatments are accompanied by bullet lists to help readers assess their applicability to their present situation. While the author does not go into very much depth, he does help readers sort through options and determine plans, as well as locate additional material for each alternative

A Definite must-read
Excellent, through and through. Couldn't put it down. Solid scientific arguments together with fluid writing style add up to a blockbuster... A friend I gave the book to later told me he was still up at 1AM reading it and didn't want to stop. The book is chock full of persuasive arguments showing how homosexuality is not genetic, and how many people who used to be homosexual have been able to be free of unwanted same-sex attractions through specialized therapy. I've met some of these people who are now happily married with children. Get this book!

Excellent educational resource
Before reading this book, I wasn't sure if the homosexual movement was a spontaneous reaction or a calculated and gradual process of selling homosexuality to mainstream America. Now I know better. "Defending a Higher Law" shows the origins of the homosexual movement, starting with Harry Hay and a handful of committed homosexuals who pushed their agenda with painstaking care to desensitize the public to homosexuality. The book makes this very clear. Since the homosexual revolution could not stand alone, it was ushered in by the media, liberal academia and lax clergy. Also, the sexual revolution of the 60s and 70s were stepping stones in this process.

This book deals with the sentimental notions about homosexuality which circulate today. In a calm narrative style, it offers the facts about the truly devastating effects of homosexuality on people and society. It also also offers hope to homosexuals who want help in overcoming their problems.

The question and answer format in the chapter on prevalent misconceptions about homosexuality is very helpful. I think this part of the book is ideal for college students and teachers alike.

Easy reading too.

Excellent analysis of the homosexual revolution
The recent victories of the homosexual movement in America, and their illegal actions in San Francisco, New York, and other places was a real wakeup call for me. In looking for good argumentation against same-sex "marriage", I came across this book, "Defending a Higher Law." Thoroughly researched and from a Catholic perspective, it is by far the most complete analysis of the current crisis afflicting America, approaching the homosexual revolution from a moral, scientific, and historical angle. A must read for anyone interested in fighting the homosexual revolution and preserving the family and the sanctity of marriage -- very worth while.
