Thought provoking
This book, by a prominent medical researcher and practitioner, is one of the most well written and interesting of it's type. In fact, I was unable to put it down once I started reading. Initially interested in possible hazards of electropollution, and also medical uses of electric current, I learned quite a bit from Dr. Becker's book; and I found myself asking more questions, and looking for other sources. Written for the layman, this book is authoritatively referenced with all the professionalism you would expect from a man of the author's caliber. Highly recommended!

Misleading title and cover - amazing book
Others have summarised this astonishing book. It is most unfortunate that the title and cover imply a sensationalist book. It is sensational - but in the sense of new knowledge unknown to most of the Medical fraternity and I write as aa senior MD! This is the most important medical book I have read and I nearly ignored it because of its lurid presentation.

What medicine should have been
and with any luck, will be in the future. Robert Becker is an M.D. and research scientist with impeccable credentials--he discovered the minute electric currents, applied to bone fractures, will heal breaks that weren't knitting (and before his treatment, amputation was the only alternature for non-unions.) As noted below, this book is illumating. The author goes a long way toward finding a scientific basis for acupuncture, homeopathy, and 'faith' healing--at the very least, they involve the electromagnetic field in and around the body. He details the opposition he has encountered through the years from the close-minded, who, through the all-too-human combination of ignorance, arrogance, blindness and politics, have hindered his work (and 'scientists' are always extolling the open-minded superiority of science over all else!) He makes no secret of his disdain for the likes of self-appointed witch-finders like James "the Amazing" Randi. In the last half of the book Becker discusses electropollution, the possible harm it can do to people, and how to reduce or elimate your exposure. An eye-opening book that will be enjoyed by those interested in the failures of modern medicine (and 'failure' is indeed the right word, since the medicine profession has had to admit that doctors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S.)

Soon to be back in print
Okay, I wrote this, so of course I like it--and since I have to give it "stars" in order to post, I give it five.

But the point of this "review" is to say that the book will be back in print this Fall (2003), from Transaction Publishers/Rutgers, with a new intro and a new title--"Health and Suffering in America: The Context and Content of Mental Health Care."

The hype about mental health care in the last five years or so has grown more and more outrageously false. I'm glad Transaction wants to keep this book in print, as a corrective to the nonsense that those who profit from mental health care would have you believe.

Most comprehensive comparison of schools of psychology
This is the best book on comparative clinical psychology/psychiatry I've ever read.

If psychotherapists/psychiatrists were considered faith healers (which this book makes clear they are), this book would qualify as a book on comparative religion, and it would make one question their faith.

Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism, Cognitive Therapy, and Biological Psychiatry are all analyzed, with their core beliefs and assumptions described in detail. Each school's standing with the scientific facts is mentioned.

Cultural reasons why Americans accept certain therapies, or come to accept them in spite of their unscientific bases, are also given.

The most noticable omission is the lack of any discussion of Albert Ellis' Rational Emotive Therapy, although many of the comments about Beck's therapy apply to RET too.

The chapter on biological psychiatry could have provided more background on its history, as well as mention more specific psychiatrists' and pharmaceutical companies' influences. For biological psychiatry, "Blaming the Brain" by Elliot Valenstein (mentioned in this text's acknowledgements) is also recommended.

Without coming out too strongly (which could create a backlash), the book does an excellent job of pointing out how biological psychiatry's illness model is used to justify prescribing psychoactive drugs with no proven specificity in treating "illnesses", in a culture which otherwise wages war on psychoactive drugs.

The only noticable editorial error was a major misspelling of "renaissance".

Excellent. A definite buy.
I was amazed at the clarity this book sheds on psychological schools of thought. It does an excellent job of explicating the values of each school of thought, giving the reader information by which to evaluate them.

I would highly recommend Cultures of Healing to anyone interested in therapy to help them understand what types of therapists do what, and what they believe in. I would also recommend Cultures of Healing to any psychology student who wishes to make some sense out of the morass of contradictory beliefs.

Definitely buy this book.

Better than fiction!
"A Divorced Mother Talks to God," by impressive writer Shirley Priscilla Johnson is a non-fiction that reads better than a lot of fiction books I have read on this topic. I applaud this woman not just as a fabulous writer but for her strength as well. Ms. Johnson is a very impressive woman to be sure! To go through what she has gone through and survive is an amazing task in itself. Thank you so much for sharing your story. You are indeed a very brave woman and an inspiration to many. You have taken a few of life's stumbling blocks and turned them into stepping-stones! GOOD FOR YOU! Your story is both a real page turner and a tear-jerker and I would give your book "10" Stars if that were an option!

(A Highly Recommended True Story!)

Midwest Book Review says "effective...inspiring"....
Every so often I run across a book that stays in my mind and heart for weeks after reading it. This is just such a book. It was not what I expected in any way. Oh, I suspected it would be well worth reading, but the raw heart of this woman embedded in her prose was overwhelming. Her story made me cry until my nose ran and I couldn't see to read.

Shirley Johnson's non-fiction story is simply written, from a heart that manages to hope despite her struggles. How this young mother with small children found the strength to hope that her marriage would hold together is beyond my imagination. Years of physical and mental abuse, infidelity, and broken promises were all she had to show for her devotion. Despite it all, she still believed her marriage could be saved.

Hope finally dies on a long road trip south. With a callousness I found blood chilling, the author's husband puts on a loving masquerade to lure his wife and children far from home. He abandons his frightened wife and helpless babies, leaves them to fend for themselves. His parting shot is that he's found another woman and he wants a divorce. Reading of her shock and fear, her loneliness, almost broke my heart. In the wake of this abandonment, she turns to an always faithful God in her despair. Her painfully honest talks with God about every aspect of her life are recorded in stark detail. I imagined Shirley Johnson's tears on every page, in every prayer.

Don't expect closure or a happy ending to this first book of a continuing series. She will find her treasure with God's help before the series ends, I'm sure, and I look forward to future books with anticipation. The author's writing style is simple, effective, and her walk of faith is inspiring. I recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves in the throes of a divorce, or to those who need to understand the pain that comes of broken hearts and marriages....

A Divorced Mother Talks to God
This is by far the most heart wrenching story I've ever read. Any woman who has gone through a divorce could empathize with her, but she endured so much more. The lack of money and having 3 children, not knowing where her next meal was coming from or where she was going to live, dealing with cold, uncaring people had to have been almost unbearable. I can tell you that she is a better person than I am and her faith seems to be unshakable.

I can only pray that God blesses her for what she's been through.

terrific information for any woman with 'women's problems'
I was lucky enough to get hold of a review copy of this book while going through the investigations and decision-making for my upcoming hysterectomy. This book covers everything I needed to know, without pushing the reader too much in any one direction. It's really good on the details and risks of hysterectomy with the laparoscope, this is information I couldn't find in any other book. As a result I now feel confident about having this procedure. I'll have the book with me as I go through the process, it has a lot of information about what happens in the weeks after hysterectomy and how to get back to better health quicker.Five stars to these sympathetic women ffor producing this sensible guide.

Fantastic coverage
This book covers every aspect of the hysterectomy procedure and thoroughly explains alternatives. I really felt empowered by reading this book and have recommended it to all my female friends, regardless of their age. This is the kind of stuff women really need to know.

very important information
This was an extremely helpful book - it contains a lot of information my doctor just simply did not tell me about. The diagrams and language are very easy to understand. All in all, I felt much better equipped to make the decision to have surgery or not.

Dobson 2-in-1: Love Must Be Tough/straight Talk

Before & After
Before I read Dobson's book I was battling with varying emotions as I tried to figure out why my marriage had taken a turn for the worst.

This book was an excellent source of strength as I struggled to move forward. It felt as though I was the only person on Earth enduring these trials, but I quickly discovered that there were others like me. Dobson's Christian-based perspective and advice allowed me to see my situation in a new light. (I needed to stand my ground, at all times!!!)

After reading this, I wished that someone had given me this book prior to getting married. This book not only offers advice for struggling married couples, but for single individuals as well. (A sense of individuality is key, before entering a relationship.)

I strongly urge anyone with or without a love interest to read the guidelines provided in this valuable resource, in order to prepare for the day the "right" person enters your life.

An Awesome Reference for Anyone Contemplating Divorce
I would recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from the pains of infidelity/divorce in their marriage. It was partciularly helpful to me as I was separated from my spouse and wanting to make reason out of "chaos". Dr. Dobson "calls it like it is". His "Love Must Be Tough" process is the best advice I received from anyone including professional marriage counselors. I found myself so entrenched with this book that I could not put it down. Dr. Dobson's advice is scripturally based yet relevant to today. His advice is "REAL"! I found that it "hurt to read this book", but the result of my experience was truly liberating! I want to personally commend Dr. Dobson for his fine work! PRAISE THE LORD!

AMAZING
To recover dignity, respect, in a relationship and for yourself with the guidance and security of the pefect love.

Downsides of Fish Culture (New Issues Press Poetry Series)

Commendably fluent in several tongues
The strength of David Lee's writing is his ability to transcend his own voice--one poem jerks and writhes tersely--another lays back in wry irony (without being smug)--another is clear-eyed and heart-felt (without being cliched.) Especially in this, his first book, you get a healthy dose of several styles of poetry, all of them well done. I've given this book to several people, some of them hard core poetry readers, veterans of many a workshop, and they very much appreciated this book for all the evidence that Lee has clearly surveyed the landscape of current poetry, mapped out his own track through the terrain of the hip and the trite and the maudlin and the, now and then, able poems of today's poets. But I've also given this book to readers who have never bothered with (post)-modern poetry, or who who used to bother with it and have decided to drop it, and they came back to me as satisfied as the former group, asking if I had any other books like this one. The answer is "no", but I am glad to have this one. I can't imagine a reader who wouldn't find at least a few poems in this book that they wouldn't eventually deem as necessary.

Startlingly brave and unabashedly tender...
These poems are full of a violent, clear eyed vision and a great humanity. When David Dodd Lee casts his gaze on the damaged world, he sees EVERYTHING... danger, heartbreak, beauty. In poem after poem he seems to question how these things can possibly co exist in the world, and yet in his poems they do. His sensibility is like nothing I've seen in contemporary poetry; immediate, haunting, full of gut & heart.

NATURE WITH A VENGENCE!
I'm not a great lover of nature poems, I admit it--BUT the fish poems in this book are so creepy and wonderful and SCARY, that I was looking up "pike" facts on the web as soon as I finished these daring hardedged wild poems. David Dodd Lee's work spans violence from the deep lakes of Michigan to the Oklahoma City Bombing. I loved this book for how far it pushes the limits of "polite" poetry.

Wonderful Resource!
This book is a wonderful, practice resource for international development staff. Intuitively appealing, it gives good advice on campaign materials development. Most appropriate for non-researchers; great for field staff.

need more like it
This is a great book. It is easy to understand and use. We need more guides like this.

good resource
I was taught that fear appeals didn't work but we used them anyways in our state health department work. This book explains what we instinctively knew -- that fear appeals work and they work well given the right conditions. I like the theory in the book and the worksheets.

Just the book I was looking for
I bought this book because I'm interested in series on discovery such as: Forensic Detectives, Medical Detectives and The Fbi Files. This book describes everything(see table of contents) in detail, from the history of crime investigation till gunshots etc. After almost every subject, the book gives real life examples and pictures.

After reading reviews I bought it and I don't regret it. It's the most excellent book in the field and often used on universities. The book isn't cheap, but if you're really interested in these subjects it's certainly worth the price.

The best in a long line of boring criminal justice books!!!
This book is by far one of the best of the criminal justice books that I have ever read. If it wasn't required reading for my Criminal Investigations class, I just might have picked it up and read it on my own. This book is one of the most interesting and easy to read books that has ever been required reading. The photography in the text helps with the topics in the reading much more than in any other books I've read. Though a bit gruesome, the photos are of great quality and only help the book that much more.

An Excellent Reference
I initially purchased this book as required reading for a Police Sergeant promotional exam but, I realized that it was the most informative text on investigations that I have read to date. The text is very well written and most of the material is applicable in any jurisdiction. The book includes a good number of illustrations and photos and I'm positive that I'll be referring back to this book throughout my career as a police officer.

Crisis of the House Divided: An Interpretation of the Issues in the Lincoln-Douglas Debates

Stunningly great book on Lincoln
For an account of Lincoln's thought (as well as Douglas') that serves to the credit of both of them, read this book. One of the finest books I have ever read, there are some chapters on Lincoln's thought that you will read time and time again. My copy of the book is marked up with great quotes where Harry Jaffa shows great insight into the tension and wonder that is the democratic thought of Abraham Lincoln, quite possibly the greatest democratic leader in history. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to know about the mind of Lincoln before the Civil War.

The one to read
If you want to read one book about Lincoln's thought, this is the one to read. The first part of the book, which takes Douglas seriously and states the strongest case for him, is historically dense and may be difficult for most readers. But keep going, because the payoff will be great. There follow chapters on two of Lincoln's early speeches. Jaffa's analysis here is brilliant, though perhaps a bit far-fetched. In the final part of the book, Jaffa states the case for Lincoln against Douglas. This part is rich in its ideas, rigorous in its reasoning, and eloquent to the point of being inspirational. (By the way, if you want to read one biography of Lincoln, I'd recommend the one by Lord Charnwood. Though written almost a century ago and therefore not up to date on all the details of historical scholarship, it is judicious throughout and beautifully written.)

The Second American Founding
Perhaps the most interesting thing about Jaffa is that he wrote Goldwater's famous "moderation in the defense of freedom is no virtue" speech. If you go back and read the speech (and it is on the web, of course), it echoes both the Old Testament ("our fathers") and Lincoln. I suspect he would agree with the man who told me that Lincoln is the greatest prose stylish in the English language. As for the book, Jaffa interprets the civil war as the second, and genuine, founding of the American republic, and precisely because the principle of the Declaration, equality, was written not in ink but blood (Jaffa has his own brand of Lincolnian Christianity). Lincoln, by this reading, belongs to the "tribe of the eagle and the lion" and was neither Caesar nor Brutus but possessed the best qualities of both. To understand that part of Jaffa's interpretation, you would have to read his treatment of Shakespeare. As for the Lincoln-Douglas debates, Jaffa stages Douglas as Thrasymachus and Lincoln--surprise, surprise--as Socrates.

A good help book for work and life.
Yes this book left me with the feeling I had heard words of wisdom from an experienced father and businessman. The book is unique in that it offers methods for dealing with both Work and life. The author is gifted in his use of examples and is very organized in his construction. I only removed one star because there is little research beyond his life's experiences. I expect facts or more statistical examples, when I read a book.

Still all in all this is a book filled with wise words. If heeded, I sure it will improve your life as it has mine.

Wonderful and Practical
I got Daddy @ Work as a gift and loved it! I read the book in two evenings and in my hectic life that says something. His writing style is down to earth and practical to the point of telling you how to sit at a table to 'connect' over a dinner/lunch conversation. I will reread it again and again to let it soak in to my thick skull. I bought two other books from Robert Wolgemuth within a week of finishing Daddy @ Work (Just Daddy and Me & Pray with Me Daddy - both great as well). Daddy @ Work is a must read for any man who wants to make a difference in his world at work and at home! A+ Robert, I wish you lived in my town!

The buisness of FatherHood
Daddy @ Work Is a detailed synopsis of life in my world. The sucess, the failure, and the trying. In the work force I have an incredible predilection to exceed expectations at any expense. This leaves little room for much else. My family life began to suffer. I saw this and wanted to make things different. I started to study the scripture to find a Biblical portrait of a "reaL" Father. I also searched for a book. Finding Daddy @ Work was an answered prayer. There is indelible insight pouring from each page. "Real" life answers, To "real" life questions. Simple to follow outlines, that will lead in a new direction. To honor God, your family, and your buisness sounds impossible, but it's not. There can be success.
