Great Addition to Personal Library
If you are person who enjoys studying women in the bible, this is a must have for your library. I guarantee you will find a different perspective on some well-known biblical women. You also will learn a little more about yourself in the process!

A must read for men and women of all cultures!
"Women's Liberation - Jesus Style" is appropriately titled. The book addresses many of the issues facing us as a people today. The root and center of any community is the edification and respect of its women. History has shown this to be true.

My wife and I met Ms. Bibb this summer. It was wonderful to talk with her about the writing of "Women's Liberation, Jesus Style". My wife and I were honored to get an autographed copy of the book.

God bless you Stephanie Bibb! WLJS will indeed become a future onstage production.

A New Resource for Local Church Programming
What is so exciting about this new resource, is its potential use in church programming. The chapters have content that needs to be reflected upon and shared by women in groups.

I can visualize a women's retreat that focuses, for its theme on "Women's Liberation, Jesus-style". This book could be used as the resource for the retreat, with all who sign up for the retreat purchasing and reading it. Then, at the retreat, participants could select a chapter, based on their particular needs at the time, and attend the workshop that focuses on that particular chapter. Facilitators for the individual workshops could be selected from within the church congregation that sponsors the retreat. Perhaps a woman minister could be invited to be the plenary speaker (perhaps even one who has contributed to the book.

It can also be used as a text for a women's Bible study in a local church, or as a Church School elective.

I give it five stars!!!

Jewish doesn't always equal Yiddish and bagelz
I was deeply moved by this provocative and absolutely necessary book. Ruttenberg has done a great job in selecting these essays. However, i was able to identify strongly with one specific essay. The one by Loolwa Khazoom, a jewish woman of iraqi descent. Being a jew from yemeni origin, i have found myself constantly struggling to preserve my yemenite jewish upbringing and redefining Jewishness for myself. Living in North America makes it even more difficult to communicate that we are Jews and yet entitled to our Middle Eastern difference. And that we are Arabs and yet entitled to our religious difference, like Arab Christians and Arab Muslims. For me, jewishness wasn't always ashkenazi. I never heard of a dreidel, even though I love bagels i don't understand a word of yiddish.

To me, jewishness was almost always inextricably linked to middle-easterness.For those of us who don't hide our Middle Easterness under one Jewish "we," it becomes tougher and tougher to exist in an American context hostile to the very notion of Easterness. As an Arab Jew, I am often obliged to explain the "mysteries" of this oxymoronic entity. That we have spoken Arabic, not Yiddish; that for millennia our cultural creativity, secular and religious, had been largely articulated in Arabic(as well as judeo-arabic and aramaic. Maimonides being one of the few middle-eastern Jewish intellectuals to "make it" into the consciousness of the West. His famous "Guide to the perplexed" was written in arabic under the title "Dalalat Al-Hai'reen"); and that even the most religious of our communities in the Middle East and North Africa never expressed themselves in Yiddish-accented Hebrew prayers, nor did they practice liturgical-gestural norms and sartorial codes favouring the dark colours of centuries-ago Poland. Middle Eastern women similarly never wore wigs; their hair covers, if worn, consisted of different variations on regional clothing (and in the wake of British and French imperialism, many wore Western-style clothes). If you go to our synagogues, even in New York, Montreal, Paris or London, you'll be amazed to hear the winding quarter tones of our music which the uninitiated might imagine to be coming from a mosque.

I strongly recommend this book!

A welcome and seminal contribution to feminist studies
Deftly compiled and edited by Danya Ruttenberg, Yentle's Revenge: The Next Wave Of Jewish Feminism is an impressive collection of essays by women in their 20s and 30s who are changing the very meaning of what it is to be Jewish. The range of thoughtful, informative, and challenging contributions offer a range of perspectives from former riot grrls to judeo-pagan witches to young Orthodox mothers. The wide ranging and diverse issues covered include circumcision, intermarriage, and the stereotype of the Jewish American Princess. Also chronicled are searches for faith, detailed intolerance, and defying expectations. Enhanced with a preface by Susannah Heschel (editor of "On Being A Jewish Feminist) and a glossary of Yiddish and Hebrew terminology, Yentl's Revenge is a welcome and seminal contribution to feminist studies in general, and the changing roles and perceptions of Jewish women entering the 21st Century in particular.

One of the first and best
I read this book when it was new and even though it came out in 1981, it is just as true now as it was then. I think if people knew what abortion really is, they would be horrified and ashamed to have called themselves "pro-choice." After having an abortion, many women have read this book and realize their pre-abortion "counseling" was totally wrong and incomplete and they had not had enough information to make an "informed choice." No one told them what an abortion really was, a planned death of their child. Had they read this book ahead of time, they probably wouldn't have had an abortion. I speak from experience. This should be required reading in every classroom that teaches "sex education."

This was a GREAT BOOK!
This was a great book, I coundn't put it down until I was finsished! It's a pretty easy read, that covers abortion itself. It doens't condem or send a hate message to anyone, it sends the message of love to human life and that life must be respected also that pro-life people like myself are not insensitive people but that we care and love the babies and the woman as well. Also it talks about how many babies are experimented on and the "behind the secenes of what really goes on in an abortion clinc." also it breifly talks about the pain of euthansia and just how horrible that is in itself. it's a must read to both pro-choice and pro-life!

Excellent Book!
This is one of the very few books I have been able to read from cover to end. It displays both mantalities behind abortion, pro-life and pro-choice. It also is a book which opens your eyes to the world's ways today. I believe that every person should read this book. I recommend it highly.

Excellent IC Recovery Guide
This book, as well as Catherine Simone's first book, is a must-have for anyone who is serious about taking charge of their own health and recovering from IC. A year ago, I read Cath's first book and began trying the suggestions she made. A year later, I am MUCH improved. I read her second book recently and found more useful information that I have already begun to put into practice. The suggestions she makes are self-help based and easy to do at home. She offers a very compelling theory for what causes IC and a practical approach to overcome it, always with the patient's comfort and safety in mind. She also encourages individual choice and research, rather than dictating some rigid program to follow. Her compassion and understanding of fellow IC sufferers really comes through. Finding Catherine's first book changed my life last year and her new book is prompting further changes. There's lots of hope and inspiration here!

Along The Healing Path,Recovering from Interstitial Cystitis
Catherine Simone has hit the mark again with her new book.Besides going into more detail about natural healing modalities she encourages IC patients to "find their own healing path" regardless if they have a medical doctor or alternative practioner. This is the message that I came away with personally, that we all have the power to heal ourselves and to trust your gut feelings. Although western medicine has offered IC patients some treatments and medicinces for this dreaded disease, they don't work for all IC patients and some are very invasive. Alternative medicine may not have all the answers either but Catherine Simone,a former IC sufferer herself,is living proof that alternative methods work and many others are finding this out as well.A must read for anyone with IC and wants to get well."The road less traveled" might be a longer road and not a familliar one,but it will get you to where you want to be....a better life in terms of health for the IC patient.

I consider this one my "IC BIBLE"
This book is definitely a "must have" for anyone suffering from Interstitial Cystitis, especially those not having much luck with conventional medicine. The author makes you feel as though she is right there with you, guiding you through each and every herb she found that helped her. She goes into great detail about each herb, what it is used for, and any known side effects or warnings. There is a wealth of information in this book written by a recovered IC patient who has put years and years of research into this disease. Her focus is what can and will make the IC body healthier. Thank you Catherine for another great book for those with IC.

Angels & Monsters
Children's perspective of cancer is presented in this uplifting book through their own words, drawings, and photographs. Despite our natural sadness when confronted with this subject, the reader senses courage and hope when turning the pages of this book. Sadness is there as well, but the faith and fighting spirit of these children remind us of the resilience and strength and unceasing hope within all of us.

a book filled with hope
As always, Billy shows us the value of each individual. His work focuses on groups of people that we often would prefer not to acknowledge, those with AIDS, those with disabilties, the homeless and, in this case, kids with cancer. But Billy always shows us that we can learn much from each individual and that all can bring joy to our lives. Contrary to being "depressing," this book is full of hope.

The impressive result of an eight year project
Angels & Monsters: A Child's Eye View Of Cancer by art therapist Lisa Murray and professional photographer Billy Howard is the impressive result of an eight year project in which Murray worked with children and had them express their feelings about their cancers through their artwork -- and then talk about their art. Howard took a photographic portrait of each child. The artwork and the portraits where paired and presented in a stunningly beautiful and thought-provoking exhibit under the auspices of the American Cancer Society, and which is memorably presented in the pages of Angels & Monsters. Sensitive, insightful, unique, and thoroughly "kid friendly", Angels & Monsters is highly recommended reading for any child (and their parents) having to cope with cancer, and would make a welcome and valued addition to any school or community library collection.

Great book!
Animal Rights - A Beginner's Guide is a great book for everyone from vegetarians to vegans to environmentalists and even to skeptics! Chapters cover:
1. animal rights (why do animals have rights? What animal rights is not, etc...)
2. Violence towards animals (speciesism, selective compassion, the foundations of cruelty, etc..)
3. Companion animals (attitudes towards them, puppy mills, trapping animals, being a responsible caretaker, etc...)
4. Vegetarianism (what is it? why is it important to animal rights? Health factors, etc...)
5. Factory Farms (what are they? the cost to family farms, environment, consumers, and animals)
6. Research, Education, and Testing (vivisection, animals in classrooms, military research, product testing...)
7. Wildlife in crisis
8. Animals in entertainment (circuses, zoos, TV, etc..)
9. Taking action (steps)
10. Animal Advocacy Organizations
11. Vegetarian organizations
12. Products and services
13. Further reading
I found that ALL the chapters had helpful details to spread the word to other people. It's not just a book for vegetarians, it's a book for everyone; so that everyone can see how we exploit animals, the environment, cover it up in the name of science, and what we can do to stop it. A GREAT resource book for beginners and non-beginners.

A must have for anyone who wants to know the truth!
This book is an amazing copulation of the many current and pressing issues in animal welfare and rights today. It is easy to read yet packed with information regarding almost every area of animal welfare. It presents the issues and exposes some of the aweful truths behind the topics discussed. In addition, each chapter has information on what you can do to make a difference. Whether you're a beginner or a long time activist this book is a must have. The resource listings alone are more valuable than the cost of the book!

Amy Blount-Achor knows her stuff!!
I had to do a research paper during my freshman year of college and her book helped me out immensely along with educating, and entertaining me. She really puts the issue of animals rights in resarch out in the front. She is a wonderful advocate and author.

A Must Read Understanding of Bio-diversity
Ark of the Broken Covenant

Reviewer: Professor Richard Lester from Montgomery AL

John Kunich has done it again! In this superb book, Kunich presents a fascinating and extraordinary map, guide and survival manual for protecting the worlds' endangered biodiversity. In more than any work on the market today, Kunich has written a most important and well-balanced book on this timely subject. He clearly explains how environmental neglect is destroying our quality of life and polluting us to death. His explosive, blockbuster style details the wasteful exhaustion of the world's natural resources. The issue addressed is a megaton bomb ticking. This is a must read. John Kunich's book is clearly a most intelligent, compassionate and totally understanding publication on this most important subject of universal interest. It demands our attention. If the academy had a Mount Rushmore for authorities on protecting the world's biodiversity hotspots, John Kunich would be up there.

The Book The World Needs Most
This is the single book the world needs most right now. Professor Kunich has written a masterpiece, proving that we are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction, and the first one caused by human beings. He shows that the law has not prevented or stopped this carnage, and he offers a hopeful solution. What could be more important for our planet?

Ark of the Broken Covenant
What is a hotspot and why do I care? Why should it matter to me where money is spent in finding and protecting the earth's resources? These questions, for me, were answered in John Charles Kunich's book "Ark of the Broken Covenant". In words and phrases aimed at dissemination of information, John Kunich allows the gentle reader to enter into a world of Global warfare. 'To maintain the legal status quo for the hotspots is to sign a death warrant.' Issues that up to now were not in the forefront of the mind are explained in such a way that by the time you are finished reading you also are ready to take up the cause to make sure that no more of our precious resources are decimated. Everyone needs to know what we are allowing to go to extinction because of our ignorance. You need to read this book. You should have read it yesterday.

Be Prepared: The Complete Financial, Legal, and Practical Guide for Living With a Life-Challenging Condition
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (27 October, 1998)
Author: David S. Landay

Collectible price: $12.71

Coming off the deaths of his father following a bout with lung cancer, a loved one who was diagnosed with leukemia, and a number of friends who contracted HIV, attorney David S. Landay wrote Be Prepared for people facing life-challenging conditions. The book is organized and presented in a tone Landay says is necessary for anyone facing an uncertain future. As such, he repeatedly emphasizes a need to both expect the best and prepare for the worst. He covers a variety of topics, including drugs and treatments, nutrition and exercise, taxes, new uses of existing assets, and estate planning. Being proactive is a consistent theme and is particularly relevant in areas such as medical power of attorney, living wills, do-not-resuscitate orders, durable power of attorney, and preneed decisions about children. Of course, when it comes to an area such as money, it's tempting to assume that much of this information is already presented in other reputable books on financial planning that cover areas such as life, disability, and health insurance. But Landay makes a point of noting that some of his concepts for people with life-challenging conditions appear to fly against conventional wisdom. He calls attention to those concepts with a special symbol and refers to them as CASH: Conventional Advice Switched on its Head. (Examples: As long as you have a taxable income, it is advisable to continue to invest in retirement accounts; even if you don't have health insurance, there are still ways to get it; disability does not generally happen overnight; Medicaid covers more long-term care than Medicare.) And the book is certainly unique in its compilation of advice in a variety of areas (medical, financial, and legal), all aimed at informing people facing critical decisions. In the end, it's hard to know if Be Prepared is a truly proactive tool, or the type of resource people won't turn to until a crisis strikes. In that sense, it's much like earthquake preparation guides that go unnoticed until the big one hits. Nevertheless, Landay's effort is a sobering reminder both that poor health can send our lives spiraling out of control and that a little planning ahead can bring pride, dignity, and a sense of power to an otherwise compromised life. --John Russell

Extremely thorough guide
Be Prepared seems to have been written for people with AIDS and cancer, but its recommendations apply to anyone facing health problems and any kind of financial difficulty. The author guides you through getting disability, maintaining health insurance, getting other benefits that may be available to you and getting all your papers and affairs in order.

These steps help you keep control of your life when health problems could otherwise overwhelm you. As Landay says, "preparing for the worst allows you to expect the best." I followed his recommendations in coping with multiple sclerosis and applied some of them in my book The Art of Getting Well.

It's not always the easiest read; it's long and packed with info and resources. But I consider it a vital reference; I don't know of an equal one on the topic.

Great resource for someone with limited time
This book was full of helpful information. I read it for my stepmother, who has terminal cancer. There is tons of information in the book, and it was super easy to pick through it and read the parts that were relevant to us. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has limited time in this world.

Everyone Should Have This Book
Be Prepared is an incredible compilation of useful and practical information for anyone dealing with serious illness. When my mother was diagnosed with Liver Disease, I had no idea where to turn to get answers to a number of our questions regarding insurance and financial matters - our family attorney didn't even have all the information compiled here. I am grateful that a friend gave me a copy of Be Prepared... Not only did it provide me with the tools to evaluate our situation realistically, it also pointed me in the right direction to deal with issues that hadn't even crossed our minds. I highly recommend Be Prepared to anyone facing the challenges of a serious illness.

GREAT book!!!
The best book I've yet read on the September 11 attacks.
Amy Bartlett makes me feel I'm there. Great writing, a moving style, and genuine insight into the tragic events of that day. By all means pick up a copy and read it!

Amy got it right!
As one who was THERE, laboring for two weeks at ground zero as a firefighter and chaplain from Colorado, I can say without hesitation that Amy Bartlett captured the moment within the pages of her wonderful book.

I was moved to tears over and over as I read her descriptions of New Yorkers' reactions to this disaster. Amy allowed us to get inside her skin and relive this event as one who actually lived in Manhattan. I came as a volunteer, and only briefly touched the lives of ordinary people who lived through this. While my time was with the rescue workers, her focus was on the thousands of ordinary people who lost loved ones, and had to find the strength to go on living long after the last body part was recovered, and the last wreckage was removed.

Anyone who desires to drink deeply from the cup of sorrow endured by so many, and yet also drink freely from the waters of hope and renewal, should read this important book. History will record the facts of this tragedy, but Amy's book will forever capture the heart of the people, and their struggle to regain that which was lost. Her words give us strength to rise out of the ashes of the rubble and take the hand of God, who will never let go.

Superb Reading
I was a police officer in Maryland in the fall of 2001. I was privileged to command a group of officers from my agency for three days in New York during the relief effort.

Being there was a life-altering event. Reading this book brought all those feelings back. It is a cliché but in this instance an apt one, this book is a MUST read.

A fine and much-needed look at pop culture and the Church
This is one terrific book. Ken Myers delves deeply into popular culture. He does a great job of grounding his research and findings in a theological framework. He cites everyone from C.S. Lewis to Bob Dylan to G.K. Chesterton to Bo Diddley.

This book is so needed today. So much of pop evangelicalism and even the mainline churches have unwisely and unthinkingly schmaltzed the Church's glorious message into a dumbed-down, styrofoam, homogenized pop culture framework and are submerging the Church's heritage into it. (See Marva Dawn's book "Reaching Out Without Dumbing Down"). I refuse to listen to my local Christian radio station because they've pretty much pancaked their format to just watered-down pop Christian music, pretty much devoid of hymnody or anything with any history to it. What if the World War II generation had demanded that the Church's glorious history and hymnody be replaced by Lawrence Welk-style tunes? That's exactly what's happening today.

Read Myers' book to find out the values of popular culture and how they compare to high and folk cultures. This book will provide you with much great background, and, most importantly, helps you to think Christianly. It's creative, intelligent and a very enjoyable read.

Outstanding Expose on Culture & Christians Role in It
From telling us what culture is and the various levels of it to what it means to be "in the world but not of it," Myers delivers the best to date analysis of culture and Christianity. Of the numerous insights he gives, one of the favorites is: schools do not just give knowledge, they do cultural assimilation. And we wonder why our schools are letting us down! This is a must read for Christians and those into popular culture!

timely and important
I read this book when it first was published and it has helped me to frame my thinking ever since. I have yet to find the author wrong in his conclusions. Rather, as time goes by, he proves to be more and more on target. It is too bad more people are not aware of this work.
