MUST READ FOR A DEEP UNDERSTANDING!!!
NOT A LIGHT READ BY ANY MEANS!- BUT NECESSARY IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND THE BASIS BEHIND MANY BELIEFS. (READ ALL OF HER WORK) ONE OF THE KEYS TO FINDING "THE TRUTH" IS TO FIND THE HINT OF TRUTH FROM ALL THE ANCIENT BELIEF SYSTEMS. THIS SET OF BOOKS IS A BIG HELP. THIS WOMAN SPENT HER WHOLE LIFE TRAVELING AND SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH. SHE SET A LOT OF PEOPLE THINKING AND CHANGED A LOT OF LIVES THROUGH HER WORK. YOU MUST OWN THIS COLLECTION IF YOU HAVE ANY INKLING FOR WANTING TO KNOW THE REAL TRUTH.

A Great Introduction - but not the method itself
This book is an awe inspiring introduction to the largely ignored esoteric knowledge and history that weaves throughout human history. Blavatsky delivers to humanity a potent clue toward much that is unknown by common people. Those who have read her works develop a new appreciation and respect for mystical traditions the world over and gain more discriminatory thinking, as they are less likely to buy the mass illusion spun by our modern culture. Fortunately, the interested student doesnt have to stop there; previously, those who were inspired by Blavatsky and other such writers were left to struggle with learning how to incorporate such knowledge or discover how to access it themselves, and because she and all other true initiates were unable to reveal the direct and practical instruction that any student would require in order to enter the path, there were and are many who end in frustration, unable to access the experiences and knowledge they crave so much. This is a great tragedy, but it is no longer necessary. This all changed in 1950 when Samael Aun Weor began publishing his works. His works are not erudite, full of bibliographic references or in depth historical analysis: his works are entirely practical, as he was the first initiate duly authorized to reveal to humanity what had always previously been hidden. Thus his works are full of techniques and instruction that every student can use in order to discover in themselves the truths expressed by all the great teachers of humanity. Thus his teachings have spread so thick in the Spanish-speaking countries that you find small towns that don't even have a post office but they will have a Gnostic School. He was allowed to do so because this humanity has become so degenerated and caught in lies and deception that there is no other hope save to offer them a last chance by revealing the beauty of the Great Arcanum in order that some may redeem themselves of the suffering we are all trapped within. Try "The Doomed Aryan Race" or "The Mystery of the Golden Blossom." You can find his works at the Gnostic Institute zshop.

The 'religion' of the 21st C.
I can only concur with the verdict of the other reviewers. Blavatsky - and 'Theosophy' generally - have been grossly under-rated and unfairly reviled in recent decades, frequently judged according to ill informed caricatures and distortions. Hence, there is a misleading preconception of Theosophy as occult 'hoo-hah,'or else a kind of 'cosmic porridge' and mish mash of all religion. But there are reasons for thinking that the basic principles of 'theosophy'must be the ultimate 'form' that any truly modern 'religion' will take - because it has had the courage and vision enabling it to perceive that there are no monopolies on the truth. Although fleshed out in encyclopaediac detail, 'Isis Unveiled' and 'The Secret Doctrine' both endeavour to make this point. On purely doctrinal terms, of course, nose against the page, one could spend an eternity - trying to figure out where the world's religious traditions truly converge. But by and large, organised or instutionalised religions have been loathe to relinquish their claim to monopolies on the truth. Blavatsky was very far-sighted in this respect, for her work prefigured the wider search for inter-faith understanding, which characterised the more promising features of religious renewal in the 20th c. Hence, Blavatsky's work has renewed significance and added meaning, at the beginning of a new century - and millennium. While fresh and lively thirty years ago, the search for spiritual alternatives and spirituality fit for a 'new age' has seen conservative reactions setting in. Doctrines once embraced by us - because of a perceived 'open-endedness' - have have since spawned some pretty rigid neo-orthodoxies, born of the the urge to make a fortress of the truth - and bolt the door shut against the rest of reality. Let's not forget the open-mindedness of people like the late D.T. Suzuki - who widened the spiritual horizons by exploring the dialogue between Buddhism and Christianity. Indeed, Suzuki even touched on the parallels between Buddhism - and certain aspects of Islam (i.e. Sufi teachings). Idries Shah spotted the parallels, even hazarding the claim that Zen was in fact inspired by Sufi influences, in part relying on old Chinese legends describing Bodhidharma as a Persian. In view of the Middle East crisis and those who forsee a 'clash of civilisations' - there is something to be said for Blavatsky's ideas, because the only answer is to keep widening the horizons. Come on guys! Let's get out of the religious closets - and live in the bare light of the truth! For all the detail heaped up in Blavatsky's writings, the ultimate point of it all - is to make us conscious of this central, underlying truth. We could make the 'New World' into another Alexandria, in which - rather than producing friction and tension, ethnic and religious diversity serve to richen the human spirit and community. As a multi-ethnic society, united in principle by a common constitution, the New World is - in embryo, a social and spiritual laboratory which could bring new light to the rest of the world. Blavatsky's vision spanned the ancient world and its mysteries, and also peered into the future - sensing seeds of potential. By no means a determinist, Blavatsky recognised that free will supervenes. The wisest expression of that 'free will' is actualise, spiritually, the potential latent in our age of intercultural and global awareness. Give Blavatsky the credit she rightly deserves. Our present economic policies do not work - and will not work, while governed by self-interest. What we really need is to is to see the 'global village' in a cosmic context.

jor for the journey
A wonderful beside companion, travel companion and gift for any
friend. It encourages with scripture and with everyday experiences. I have one at home and one in my office!

nice devotional
The reviewers before me did a nice job of covering the content of this nice little devotional book, so I won't do that again. However, I have enjoyed this book so much I wanted to add my comments and say that I find myself picking it up to read at all times of the day. With 2 very young children I have little time to read, but with the verses on one page and the inspirational story on the other, I find that I am able to complete the message at one time. I would highly recommend this book to any woman who wants to spend more time in God's word.

An Encouraging "Companion" For Every Day
Sometimes, a book becomes a constant source of encouragement, a faithful companion with good things to say. JOY FOR THE JOURNEY--a lusciously bound and composed work--is that type of book.

The promises of God are paired with the insights of Christian women to supply your mind and heart with good news at every moment when it's needed. Find promises to help you recapture joy, or assist you to develop godly habits or to aid you in your struggle through heartache. For the last you find, "In the day when I cried out, You answered me, and made me bold with strength in my soul," from Psalm 138:3, paired with an essay by Liz Curtis Higgs, who says that "laughter is how we take a much-needed break from heartache."

Under the heading PROMISES TO HELP YOU WAIT IN HOPE, you'll find from Psalm 27:14, "Wait on the Lord, be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart," combined with words from Edith Schaeffer about how we wait for all manner of things, and most of all, for Christ's return.

If you're the type of person who enjoys devotional books, if you like to carry something beautifully written with you to give you an inspiring word when the days are rough or you are feeling doubts, then please obtain this lovely compilation. An encouraging word will always be at hand. *Mir*

There is another side to the Moon!
This book is superbly written and well documented. He has a section describing the Changing Character in Crime which just simply will send chills up your spine.

Throughout the book Colson is asking, What is the Remedy? What is Justice? What Must We Do? He does not tip toe around these questions. He presents historical examples and modern statistics and you must decide. I especially liked the Alternative Sentencing section. Not giving the Judges the power to lessen the sentence of a horrific crime but at the same time not overloading the prisons with minor crimes and then be forced to release sentenced criminals by the courts.

He looks at the common sense cost and effectiveness of present sentencing. Towards the end of the book he does point to prison systems that are working. And the stats show the reduction of recidivism as a result of these new faith based prisons.

Personally I do not understand why these newer systems cannot be seen as win-win-win situations. The taxpayer saves money, the prisoner does not return to jail, and society gets a responsible citizen back in society.

I cannot understand a less than excellent review being given by a person that has not served in a prison system. I serve in the Ct. Dept. of Correction and after reading this book not only are my eyes are open to reality but so is my mind. There really needs to be a better way than what we are doing today and I believe that at the very least this book should get the legislatures, wardens and citizens asking, no demanding for positive changes. I would love to see what would be the result if every warden in a state be given this book to study and then to come together with Mr. Colson, The Governor and the Commisioner of Correction.

Mr. Colson needs to write another book in this vein of thought. This book went by way too soon.

View from a non-Colson insider
It is sad to see a professional critique that is so shallow. The major point that Colson makes in the book is that the rise in crime is a moral problem, and a problem of morality. I know that it's popular to put everything in "Right" and "Left" political terms, but when it comes to the criminal justice system those labels make little sense, and Colson is very careful to say that to the extent that both have tried to "Fix" the system both have been wrong. What is needed and evaluation of what works and what doesn't. As one who has spent the last seven years working in prison ministry, I was impressed at how well Colson presented what we all see. I have never worked with Colson's groups, I can't sign the pledge they require, but I'm a great admirer of their organization. The place where I think the book breaks down is in the conclusion, and recommendations. Colson sites several different programs, but doesn't offer a grand vision... I wish he would, but I'm afraid, that like many real world problems, there isn't a simple solution. Success requires men to change their hearts, and that can't be done en masse, but only one heart at a time.

Piercing Insights -With The Data To Back Them Up
Logical, well thought out, with real examples in a very readable style. An experienced attorney, Colson makes his case very well. As an ex-convict who has visited over 600 prisons in the last 26 years he writes as one who ought to know.

Liberalism's explanations of the cause of crime, and therefore liberalism's solutions, are well intentioned but deeply flawed. Likewise, conservative explanations and solutions (which include most of Colson's former views) are equally flawed. The answer is somewhat of a hybrid of the two based upon a different set of assumptions.

Whatever the answer is, let's agree on what the answer is NOT. With one in every 32 adult Americans in prison, on probation or parole our current system is a colosal mess. It is not sustainable.

We say we are looking for fresh ideas and real answers. Here's a guy that has some, and he can prove that they work. We owe him a fair hearing. I highly recommend this book.

Stunning
I read a lot of books over long periods of time. This book, though, was so good that I ignored my other responsibilities so I could finish it.

Boy, what an incredible story. As a 46-year-old man raised in the Assemblies of God (and still loves it), I can verify that his description of A/G churches is often true. The book is funny, compelling, and very easy to read. I've read perhaps 100 books in the last five years, and this one would go in my top 10.

Book has three problems. . . .
1) Your total wealth decreases...
2) Once you start reading the book, the next four or five hours of your life is committed to finishing the book.
3) If the author ever writes anything else, you will be at high risk of buying it.

Kudo's to Counselor Lundy for his very well written and fascinating account of Evangelist's Swaggart's efforts to destroy Pastor Gorman.

The only thing disappointing about the book was the eventual outcome of the trial. In spite of winning his case, Marvin Gorman did not receive any financial compensation for his injuries. It would have been nice to have seen Jimmy Swaggart Theology Institute, Jimmy Swaggart Bible College, Jimmy Swaggart Worship Center, and Jimmy Swaggart World Television Headquarters go on the auction block.

Praise for Let Us Prey
You can't put this one down even though you may know how it ends! It's filled with suspense - drama - humor - love - and sadness. You will be amazed as the facts unfold and fall into place to tell this all-too-true story. Don't miss it!

Right on Target
Susan Keane Baker has so much knowledge in this important area of health care and she shares with us her many insights and suggestions in an interesting, easy-to-read manner. This is definitely a book for all health care professionals and executives to keep on a nearby shelf as a ready reference over the years. Susan covers so many topics that are essential for patient retention, such as anticipating patient needs and preferences and making sure that patient complaints are dealt with in a timely and caring manner. As a longtime consultant in patient communication myself, I can testify that my colleague Susan has done a superb job with this book. Its all there - which makes this 5 stars for sure. It's easy to see why this book is a top seller!

Must Reading for Healthcare Professionals
There is so much valuable, pragmatic and helpful information in this book! The woefully underestimated value of listening, the best way to handle a patient complaint, creating a "patient -friendly" environment. It's all here...presented in an engaging, well organized and insightful manner. Satisfying patients goes far beyond taking surveys. I recommend this book to all my clients!

I wish I could give this book 6 stars
I bought this book after Press Ganey recommended it in their October 1999 client advisory newsletter. It's full of practical ideas that anyone working in a health care setting can use. Excellent!

If you like Harry Potter you will Love Manitou
If you like Harry Potter you wil love Manitou. Magic is real! You get a feeling that all the characters in the book can come to life. You know that you can become a magician...a singer ... anything you want to be once you are involved in the world of Manitou. There is a secret in H. Potter that I have found in Manitou, that secret is in all of us.

Mythology for today!
Manitou brings mythology to life! This book seems to radiate love and understanding, as an unusual assortment of young people, gods and goddesses, and a cat, travel through time up a mysterious river to Manitou, the Land of Living Imagination. An amazing amount of wisdom (and love) is imparted in this must-read novel by the remarkable Ramona du Houx. This is a book you will treasure and want to share. The illustrations by Ramona and Emily add to the pleasure.

For Cat Lovers
This amazing novel brings together peoples from around the globe with wisdom imparted through clever, funny and serious stories. Serious situations are defused with the stories making me see how much we need stories in our everyday lives. The tales keep me reading, as if I was involved in a Greek myth. I never realized how much so many nations have in common through mythological tales until I researched cats around the globe. Manitou honors them as did ancient civilizations. From the Egyptian "Best" cat to the Japanese Welcome cat and the American pussy, Manitou gives cats , and other animals, roles they deserve. I am an animal lover, and believe anyone who believes in humanity shares this love. That's why I recommend Manitou, for it has restored my belief in humanity.

After all these yeares
Many years ago - probably around 15 or so, I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Wagner tell her story in person. I was only a young teenager or so at the time. I don't even remember if I read the book before or after seeing her, but I do remember that ever since then, I have never forgotten this magnificient woman's story.

I wouldn't hesitate getting this book for friends or family members as a gift - some might consider it unusual or inappropriate, but it might just change someone's life!

God is amazing!
I just read the Chinese version, and I just spent about 3 and a half hours to finish this book in the midnight. I just don't want to go to sleep before finish it, it is such a great testimoney!

Why Doesn't This Book Have More Exposure
Okay. This book by Petti Wagner is what the hottest fiction is made of. The intrigue, action and wacko plot is just what people clamor for.

After all, I have yet to read a fiction or sci fi story about a very wealthy woman who is an heiress to a fortune of a company that is a household name.

A story about this heiress arising to greatness and accomplishment that most of us only dream of.

A story about this heiress with numerous inventions and successful businesses to her credit with everything going her way.

Until some of her employees decide to take it for themselves.

So they torture and murder her.

But what they did not expect is that she comes back from the dead to bring restitution on them!!!!!

Have YOU ever read a fiction book like that?

Well, if you read this one, you still will not have. You see, this book is TRUE!!!!!

We have friends that know the pastor that wrote the forward of this book in Texas. He has since passed away- John Osteen- but if he endorsed this book, it is genuine and true.

I first heard Petti's story in a radio interview and was laughing so hard at the wacky details that I just HAD to get the book. Such a crazy story HAD to be true. Not even the greatest fiction writers have created such a fascinating and interesting story.

Get this book and read it. You will want to read it again. It is just too amazing to put down. It is an easy book to read. Lots of action and keeps your attention. ....

This book should be on the best sellers list. A story like this DESERVES recognition.

Social Security Choice - The Case Made Clear and Simple
Reading Wade Dokken's book, New Century, New Deal, was particularly gratifying in many ways. As a Wall Street market strategist for years, I have spent considerable time analyzing and measuring the benefits of privatizing social security, and I have long been a believer in the merits of privatization. Naively, I have always thought of this issue as one of the "Republican" ideas which would never find favor with Democrats. What a delight to discover a life-long, ardent and proud Democrat is the author of a book that succinctly and eloquently lays out the case for privatization. Importantly, he focuses on what he calls Social Security CHOICE, rather than a mandatory privatization. This book should be read by every Senator and Congressman before they cast a vote on the subject. Wade Dokken details clearly why, without a choice based system, wage earners will be subject to either massive tax increases or benefit cuts. He then goes on to make the case that "Social Security Choice comes down to the simple principle of fairness", allowing as how those with a lot of money do not need social security. Rather, it is the lower and middle income wage earners who stand to benefit from investing their own portion of social security. How right he is! This book is an easy read. It doesn't try to solve the mathematical problem. Rather it deals with the principles for privatization. Anyone with a couple of hours on a train or a plane or in the back seat of a car can become a convert.

Timely subject made easy and enjoyable
With simplicity and folksy anecdotes, Wade Dokken makes a complicated subject easy to read and understand. I enjoyed this book and am convinced that it's time to fix a problem that most politicians are afraid to tackle.

I can save 12% from Social Security
I naively did not know that 12% of my income is witheld for Social Security taxes. More disheartening, I did not know that I receive only a 2% return on this money.

Ouch.

However, New Century New Deal, made a great point. I could own some or most of this money and earn mutual fund rates of return. I am a believer and you will be if you read this book.

Too much of an okay thing
I picked this book up because it was suggested "in addition" to another book on hospitality that I read recently and thought was life-changing. This book is very good, it includes interesting and thoughtful ideas and it is pretty well written. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was reading some academic paper prepared in graduate school. While I liked the book fine and it definitely worth reading, I think if fails to measure up to some other books on the market right now. I would certainly suggest it for anyone doing academic work, preparing for a class or inventing some church program.

Making Room - an action agenda for the faith community
It is hard to know where to start. The book is elegantly written, it is full of interesting history of the early church. But more importantly, it speaks to a deadness in the church today. Often members of the church have learned to live distant from problems of their "neighbors" be they down the block or down the street in the challenged neighborhoods in our cities.

In the early church, members were the challenged people, they reached out to each other, but now much of the church is isolated and distant from the needy stranger. Read Luke 14 - decide if you have responded to principles in those scenarios described by Jesus. If you come up short, then this book will help with a compassionate analysis of our dilemma in reaching out to "the least of these."

In addition to setting the stage for individuals to learn to reach out to needy strangers, the book creates a context for the faith-based social service discussion. While members of congregations may not exhibit the skills of professional social workers, they have an important role to play in being present and responding to neigbors in their communities who need the touch of grace in their lives.

The book is a good read, but it requires more than one pass. If you invest in the book deeply, you will be called to action.

Insightful and provocative
I read this book in preparation to interviewing Dr. Pohl for a magazine. It's terrific -- a thoughtful examination of practices that used to be considered an essential component of the Christian faith but which have, over the years, been institutionalized and removed from our everyday lives. How do we recapture the Biblical imperative toward hospitality in the reality of a modern world? This book doesn't give pat answers, but it does give you a framework for asking the right questions, and some suggestions that might point you in the right direction.
