My feelings about this book
I am a friend of a friend of the writer of this book. My friend shared it with me. I think it is a wonderful, funny, heart-touching book. I am not a mother yet and it had many great things to say to me anyway. This is definitely a great book to purchase and read for yourself and give as a gift to a friend.

Calm in My Chaos - March 3, 2001
Through a God-given gift, Elisabeth K. Corcoran has written an amazing book that mothers and women of all ages will relate to and be encouraged by. I took time out of my own chaos to read this book from cover to cover in one sitting. I am so glad that I did! My relationships with God, my daughter, and my husband will benefit from it, too. This book is personal, honest, humorous, thought provoking, touching, inspiring, comforting, and life changing. Beth is a wonderful example of a Godly woman, mother, and wife. She has helped me put my "chaos" in order and proper perspective by putting many of my own thoughts and feelings into words. This book is very refreshing to read, and it has helped renew the joy of my salvation. It celebrates motherhood, which is the greatest privilege that God has blessed me with. Mothers, our children are only ours to borrow for a little while, so enjoy them while we can! Read Calm in My Chaos and be blessed!

A delight to read :-)!
Being a mother, I can't help but relate to the many inspiring stories that are in the book, "Calm in My Chaos", by Elisabeth Corcoran. Each of the stories she has written, each thought, each dream and experience, has been captured and shared in a book for all to read.

Elisabeth touches upon moments in her life that made an impact - both profound and everlasting. She discusses many personal experiences, including the birth of her child and personal reflections. Included in each story are Christian prayers and bible passages, which lend additional support and encouragement to those of the Christian faith. Readers, especially mothers, will no doubtedly be able to relate to Elisabeth's words. In fact, she shares so many personal experiences that readers may find themselves thinking of her as a close friend. I myself have related a few of her stories to experiences and situations in my own life.

My ParenTime recommends "Calm in My Chaos" - it is very well written and beautifully expressed.

Cell Phones: Invisible Hazards in the Wireless Age: An Insider's Alarming Discoveries About Cancer and Genetic Damage

George Carlo and Martin Schram are aiming to become information-age Ralph Naders. They ask a question that ought to concern America's 103 million mobile phone users, as well as those who merely come within earshot of these popular devices: Is the wireless future a threat to public health? "Visit any public building, college classroom, courthouse, or commuter train, and look around: You'll see people using not just wireless phones but also wireless laptop computers and miniature palm tops," write Carlo and Schram. "What you won't see are the microwaves that are criss-crossing a confined space where a number of people who are not even using these instruments are bombarded by these waves." It sounds creepy. And Carlo, an epidemiologist who once oversaw a multimillion-dollar research project on health for the cellular industry, believes the news is not good: there may be a link between cell phone use and brain tumors. The research is not conclusive, but Carlo and Schram think it's disturbing enough to warrant government action. Needless to say, the industry that once backed Carlo's work now considers him persona non grata.

Due largely to Carlo's coauthorship, Cell Phones is unavoidably a one-sided story. Key business figures didn't agree to interviews. In fact, this might have been a better book if it were written by Schram, with Carlo as one of several major characters rather than a collaborator. Then again, it would lack the passionate advocacy that will draw many readers to it. And even the most skeptical may want to take a few of the simple safety precautions the authors recommend in a concluding chapter, such as wearing a headset or earpiece when using a cell phone, in order to keep a distance from the radiation-emitting antennae. One look at the x-ray photos reproduced in the book, which show how radiation easily penetrates skulls, will give even the most impervious observer second thoughts. One thing is probably certain: This book is a harbinger of litigation. If Carlo and Schram are correct about their concerns, the cellular industry--as unbelievable as it sounds--may go the way of Big Tobacco. --John J. Miller

Can you hear me now?
Cell phones have become an integral part of American (and increasingly the world) society. They are ubiquitous in the business world and day-to-day life activities. The authors discuss in detail the risks associated with cell phones, particularly those of the digital variety. They tell the all to common tale of industry PR "spin" vs. public safety and common sense. While it may not be correct to state that cell phones cause brain cancer, the preliminary indications and not heart warming.

Thus far clinical studies have shown:

1) Cell phone radiation penetrates deep into the developing brains of children.

2) Cell phone radiation results in chromosomal damage to blood exposed to wireless phone radio waves. There is a link between chromosome damage and brain cancer.

3) Cell phone radiation breaks down the blood brain barrier. Think of the blood brain barrier as an immune system for the brain. As it breaks down, other environmental toxins more easily enter the brain and cause damage.

4) A number of studies showed a statistically significant correlation between brain cancer deaths and cell phone use.

5) Cell phone radiation can cause pacemakers to malfunction is they (pacemakers) are not properly insulated from cell phones that are within 6 inches of the pacemaker.

The above are based on elaborate human, animal, and laboratory experiments that examine the effects of cell phone radiation. The experiments in the book focus primarily on cell phone use - when the phone is near the head. If cell phone radiation is able to penetrate the human skull, the effects may be even more dramatic on soft tissue such as reproductive organs that may be continuously exposed to radiation by a phone carried in a pants pocket.

Based on the scientific evidence in the book you should avoid using a cell phone or being around one to be perfectly safe. Since that is not likely, the following precautions can be taken:

1) Despite the aggressive marketing practices of the industry towards children, keep cell phones out of the hands of your kids, they are particularly susceptible to the radiation generated by cell phones.

2) Use a hands free model and keep the phone away from your body.

3) If you put the phone up to your ear, point the antenna away from you.

4) If you have one of those cool little phones with a built in antenna, the whole phone is an antenna and you are getting a heavier dose of radiation. GET A HEADSET OR A DIFFERENT PHONE.

5) A cell phone has to pump out more radiation when the signal strength is low, try not to use the phone unless the signal strength is near 100%.

Initial studies show a clear link between cell phone radiation (especially associated with digital phones) and adverse health effects. In the next 10 to 20 years the effects will become apparent with the general public serving as the test subjects. Tread carefully on those wireless stocks over the long term, and take precautions today so you don't become a statistic. Many thanks to Dr. Carlo and Martin Schram for timely well written book packed with critical info for all wireless customers.

THIS BOOK COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE!
Having worked with wireless technologies for over 30 years, I am an expert in the subject and can verify that the contents of this book are true and undisputable. If you use any form of wireless technology, especially cell phones, you must take the necessary precautions! One thing that the vast majority of people don't understand is that, when cell phones were analog, there was a greatly reduced risk of radiation danger. The reason - analog radio waves are found in nature, i.e. they are natural. The real risk and danger is that today, all cell phones being manufactured are digital and transmit digital signals which are never found in nature because they are man-made. This type of unnatural radiation going through the body is flat-out dangerous and a very high risk to your health. Want to know what's even more scary? There is really no way to protect yourself from the millions of digital wireless cell phone signals passing through your body every day. You are not protected in your home, your office, or even in a bunker. The only type of building that may be able to ward off these digital demons are totally metallic buildings because they tend to relect radio signals. Beware!

Radiation is definently emitted from all cell phones!!!
I would have to say this book gets all the facts about radiation. I reccommend anyone who has a cell phone or knows somebody that you love that uses a cell phone get this book. It is very useful and mind blowing. Cell phones can give you cancer and cause brain damage. Im not saying to throw away your cell phone now, because I still use mine with cell phone accessory that blocks 96% of radiation. I reccommed everybody get this accessory (...) and BUY THIS BOOK!!!

HMO's
My 85-year-old mother recently fell and severely fractured her hip. Unfortunately, she belongs to a Medicare HMO based in Southern California. Because of the nature of her fracture, she required pinning of her femur, a more extensive procedure than the usual treatment for hip fractures. The HMO which was contractually responsible for her care denied payment to the Skilled Nursisng Facility after l8 days, in spite of written reports from her physical therapists and her doctor detailing the remarkable progress she was making. Thanks to this book, we were able to appeal the HMO's denial, which was immediately again denied by the HMO. The appeal then went on to HCFA for review and the denial was reversed. This has saved my mom thousands of dollars. It should be required reading for anyone involved with HMO's!

Required reading for people with health insurance
As a physician who has dealt with many HMOs, I believe this will become the premier guide for people to get the best care out of whatever system they're using. It is about time someone put all of the secrets and resources in one place. Medicine has changed significantly in the last few years - right under the noses of most patients and doctors. It's caused frustration as quality care has diminished. This book will help you get back in charge. I think it should be given out by insurance plans as a guide to how patients should use the system. Congrats to the authors!

Care Package for Patients
Read this before you go to the doctor! It explains how to work with your doctors, rather than against them, to get the care you need. It points out why the red tape exists, why the doctors are bound by it, and how the two of you can get around it. This book should be issued to every patient. It will benefit doctors and patients alike.

Catholicism for non-Catholics as well
I've always been a firm believer that if you want to understand a religious tradition, you should go to those who are orthodox believers in that tradition. So often, books written about religion are "exposes," written by disaffected members or former adherents. Although it is over 100 years old, Cardinal Gibbons' book is an excellent statement on faith and a helpful explication of Catholic belief with reference to the Bible. Gibbons is an unashamed believer, and he dispells a lot of the misconceptions many people have about Catholicism in a non-threatening manner that builds understanding. Some of the positions presented here are dated, particularly with regard to American Catholicism, but readers who want to understand Catholicism will benefit from reading this book.

Review from the Publisher
This book is one of many TAN Books that have helped convert many to a strong Catholic Faith. In the case of "The Faith of Our Fathers," both Scott Hahn and Gerry Matatics mention it by name as having personally affected their Protestant beliefs. "The Faith of Our Fathers" is and always has been an incredibly popular and successful book explaining the basic tenets of the Catholic faith and (more importantly) why we hold them. It delves into the historical background of virtually everything people find hard to understand about our religion, such as priestly celibacy, sacred images, the Church and the Bible, the primacy of Peter, Communion under one kind, invocation of the saints, etc. First published in 1876, during the heat of violet anti-Catholicism in the United States, the book sold 1.4 million copies in forty years and has been reprinted many times since. It will confirm one's faith in the truth of the Catholic Church like no other and will arm the reader to answer the questions so often posed by skeptics and unbelievers.

A precise definition of the Catholic position
The first edition of this book was written in 1876, and the fact that you can still buy it today, and that millions of these books have been sold (over 4 million copies), are testament to the vibrancy and truth that is contained within this book.

In an age when Catholicism was the "new kid on the block" in America, Cardinal Gibbons, an Archbiship of Chicago, wrote this book to inform and educate non-Catholics on the biblical soundness of the Catholic Church. This book also has proven to be a highly rewarding read for the Catholic as well, who can always use a bit of a reminder of their faith. In addition, this is an excellent resource for apologists. The answers are clear, concise and contain scriptural support for each position. Granted, some of the material (as it relates to Cardinal Gibbons when he refers to the present-day world) is out-dated, but this is not a problem throughout the whole book (maybe a couple of references to the "present day" will need some research since they did happen over a century ago).

For those who wish to seriously inquire about the Catholic Church, this book should be able to answer most (if not all) of your questions. For those who wish to have an excellent tool available to defend and proclaim the legitimacy of the Catholic Church, this book will lend you that support and defense. However, people wishing to learn more about Marian doctrine should not go to this book to find those answers... why? Because this book does not spend much time talking about these matters.

So what topics are covered? The priesthood, celibacy, temporal power of the popes (necessity), infallibility, purgatory and scripture are a few of the topics this book covers.

Excellent
This is a warm, comforting book with gently taught lessons on how to manage with a rare cancer. The importance of finding expert doctors is gently but unforgettably remarked upon. The man has a generosity of character and spirit that makes reading this book a calming as well as an educating experience. He demonstrates by example an exemplary way of dealing with cancer, its many setbacks, and its many frustrations. WELL WORTH READING. Beg, borrow or steal a copy.

A Must Read Book
This book is a page turner. The author's story is one of courage and determination. Not only is he told he is seriously ill, but he finds his HMO offers no help. As his battle with his illness and insurance company unfolds with the pages, the reader is drawn into its intensity and overwhelming obstacles. I was amazed at the bravery of this man. He accomplished a feat few people in his situation would be willing to face. In my opinion, he is a hero. Read this book! You will find it fascinating.

A Touching and Inspiring Story
I highly recommend this book this book to all readers, whether ill or healthy. Mr. Scribner's true story will touch you deeply. He has the ability to draw you into his life with the written word. I actually felt I was present in many of the situations. The book is excellent and extremely informative. His factual account is awe-inspiring and offers encouragement to those who are battling their health insurance carrier as well as a lifethreatening disease. His courage in the face of overwhelming odds literally does give one "hope" when it seems there is none.

God created us all, right?
I just read this today, and I can tell you this book restores my
faith in what religion can do, i.e. re=again, and ligio=connect.
To reconnect us with one another. Tutu asks us to extend love,
regardless of belief, while standing up for the greater good. This
is not moral relativism. It is humor and understanding and
compassion and a belief in a source that connects us all.

I am absolutely pleased to be the first to review and recommend
this book. This is beauty and strength and peace written in the
language of the human spirit. Tutu strongly suggests that it is
a universal language to which every one of us can respond.

So may it be.

Timely and timeless
Archbishop Tutu writes with such power and persuasion that I am convinced his words will be around for many years to come, inspiring people as much in future generations as they do now. In this short book (which took just a couple sittings to read over the weekend) he lays out what I suppose is best described as his philosophy/spirituality of life. In this way it is timeless, but it is also quite timely in that I came away feeling compelled to take my own sense of spirituality and turn it into action in today's world. I often thought of my spiritual seeking as a solitary, inward-looking process, but through Archbishop Tutu I can now see that it must also, by necessity, look outward as well.

Essence of Tutu
No one familiar with the writings of Archbishop Tutu will find anything new in this little book. Its value lies in the fact that it's a marvelous distillation of what Tutu has preached and practiced over his lifetime of reflection, prayer, and ministry. Accordingly, the book is a perfect primer for anyone new to Tutu. But it's also a convenient and eloquent summary for those who know and love his thought. For both audiences, the essays are perfect occasions for lectio divina.

Although the book's themes are ones that Tutu has worked and reworked for years now--the communitarianism of "ubuntu," the rainbow people of God, the value of redemptive suffering, the collaboration of God and the people of God, the importance of recognizing and accepting the astounding fact that God loves everyone equally and unconditionally, forgiveness and reconciliation--there is a clarity to their expression here that is really quite breath-taking. Tutu, like Henri Nouwen before him, has always had the ability to convey profound truths in simple, economic terms. But he's raised the art to its finest form in _God Has a Dream_. As a consequence, the careless reader might breeze through the volume without realizing its depth.

Let me recommend this book along with Michael Battle's wonderful recent book-length analysis of Tutu's theology of "ubuntu." Tutu has much to offer the twenty-first century, which already seems light years away from practicing the love that this South African archbishop preaches.

Second edition is first rate!
This book is in its second edition -- updated in the 90's to include information about HIV and AIDS. One of the things that it stresses when coming out is to make sure to include the statement "BEING GAY DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE TO GET AIDS." -- a few times if necessary.

I have felt the need to come out to my family for a long time about my own emotional/sexual status. This book helped me a lot as far as planning my strategy, what to say, etc. It contains a TON of useful info concerning how to make "coming out" as painless as possible -- *for all involved*.

To sum it right up? Here I am at 31 years old, and after reading this book, the notion of coming out to my family scares me less than the thought of smoking in front of them (which I am sure I will probably feel the need for a few cigarettes before this discussion is over...)

... not to mention -- it has some wonderful information in there for family members too, so definitely lend it to them after you have come out, or if you are a family member who is still looking for some more answers as to how your child's/sibling's/parent's(') sexual orientation might effect your relationship with them -- BUY THIS BOOK!

Courage and Understanding this book will give you.
I just finished reading this book since it was recomened by so many. I can say that the author put allot of time into this book and has done a wonderful job.
As you read through this book you start to understand what you and your parents go thorugh in certain steps of your life and coming out.
I have been out to myself for just about a year. It was not until I accepted to myself that I am gay can I expect others to accept me for who I am.
After reading this book, I thought allot about my life, how I do not share it with family, then I realized it was time for me to come out to my parents and family.
I now have the courage thanks to this book. I hope you read this book and come to the conclusion that you too have the courage.

A great guide for GLBT youth and their parents
Coming out to my mom and dad was the most terrifying prospect I ever had to deal with, but I knew the day would come eventually when I had to face them with my being gay. Like so many gay people, I had no idea how to do it or even how to know that I was ready. Thank God for this book! It helped to make a potentially horrible experience better for me and for them. Thank you, Ms. Borhek!

Women's humor at its best
This book is even better than its title. The authors deliver a series of short essays on topics every woman can relate to, and they do it in styles uniquely their own. On one page, I was laughing; on the next page, crying. This is Anne Lamott you can bring home to your mother.

God is at the center of the lives of both women, and, we discover in these delightful vignettes, that he is also the one in the details. Another kudo to the authors: hardly a fat joke to be found!

A chuckle a minute
With keen insights, Bolton and Wave write about the realities and emotions of the ordinary woman's life. They weave a delightful mix of anecdotes into biblical applications that women can personally relate to. Bits of humor scattered throughout the book increase the impact of the book's spiritual lessons. I still chuckle about their self-described waistline after having babies: "a line between 2 rolls of flab that sat on top of each other (picture bagel dough with a crease in the middle and you've got the idea)." Written in conversational style, the book has sections relating to the everyday Blue Plate Special of unconditional love; God's menu of soul growth; comparison of contentment with hash browns; and the Child's Plate of character development.

Do NOT visit Girlville Diner if:
1) You have no sense of humor, 2) You cannot look life in the face and enjoy the wrinkles, 3) You can only tolerate flawless relationships and perfect kids, 4) You live in a museum and ride in a stretch limo.

This Diner serves up a gourmet menu of spicy humor, faces without makeup, angels without wings, all served on a beautifully arranged paper plate. On second thought, DO visit Girlville Diner. Whatever ailed you before this meal will surely be cured by the time you finish it.

I first came into contact with this work because it was a required text for my seminary class on ethics. Pieper is a first rate German philosopher and expert on the works of St. Thomas Aquinas.

If you study this book, The Four Cardinal Virtues (fortitude, temperance, justice, and prudence), along with his other book, Faith, Hope, Love (the three theological virtues), you will have a wonderful primer on ethics.

One word of warning. Philosophy is not light reading. I know, it was one of my majors. Philosophy written in German and translated into English produces a book not for the timid. If you are willing to take on the challenge, more power to you. It is worth the effort, but you should know what you are getting into before you put down your money. This is a book for those who want to think and wrestle with ethics. It is not for everyone.

Don't let your enemies define you.
Simply brilliant reading. Living naturally is what the crux of this book is all about.

The book delves into ethics, civics, justice, philosophy, psychology, and I think it is a healthy tool for understanding classical literature: Shakespeare, for example, and the inner psychology of his characters as this moral plain, that Pieper describes, is so much closer to his than most of what we hear in our modernity.

Pieper, here, spends time defining what the classic moral compass is, taken primarily from the last officially sanctioned church doctor St. Thomas Aquinas. Pieper brings Aquinas and other philosophers' language up to date, for the ears of the modern mind. Christianityfs definition has too much to do with how it's enemies, or alterior users, wish to define it and Pieper spends a short time correcting this in places.

If you liked this you might like Pieper's Virtues of the Human Heart which is a bit less discriptive but more powerful.

Thomistic
I read this book over and over again. Pieper is a great antidote to the vagueness of some modern Catholic writers who tend to use a feel-good approach to virtue and write vaguely about sharing, caring, and being nice to people. This book tells you what the virtues really are and what they have meant to the Church for two thousand years.

Helpful but basic.
The book is basic in its approach to elder caring. Because the book is written by fourteen different people it is repedative in areas. This book completely ignores the wonderful counsel of daily Bible reading and prayer in elder care giving. My Mother suffering with Alzheimer's, loves to have the Bible read to her. "What a friend we have in Jesus".
