deserves to be on your shelf next to tharp and elder
The book really starts out examining how risk management can affect a system with positive expectations. The main point he is making is that your average profit should be greater than average loss, which is true enough. Unfortunately, there is an implied assumption in this section that suggests you can change the stop without impacting the probabilities of success -- i've found this not to be true in my own trading. I would certainly liked to have seen some mention of this in the book, but that's a bit of a nitpick to be quite honest.

In the book, Mr. Guppy uses the 2% risk model Elder uses. However, there are bits missing. For example, he has no real way of limiting risk. He has a model whereby through diversification and position limits, he will limit outstanding risk to 20%. However, from my brief reading of the book (I plan to go over it more thoroughly later), there is nothing stopping you from entering another 20% worth of positions, and another 20%. Stopping your entire portfolio out several times. Sure, I hear you say, this could never happen to a top trader -- however, if it happened to Steve Walton , I suspect it can happen to you.

Overall, I think this is an excellent book, and I learned quite a bit from it. Mr. Guppy's writing style may not be quite as polished as some writers, but I think it's still quite good. If you are a position trader, i'd highly recommend this book -- if you opt for the swing or daytrading timeframes, I think you might be better off with Elder or Tharp -- although it certainly does no harm to study all of these authors, as they each have a lot of really good things to say about this topic. I think this book may indeed be destined to be in fine company, alongside Elder and Tharp. This work is much stronger and generally more useful than his earlier work, Market Trading Tactics.

Want to read just one bond book? Make it this one
This is my favorite book on bonds. It is basic, but does not dodge technicalities; all necessary fundamentals are explained very clearly including why total return is more relevant than yield; real-world issues and market practices are addressed critically. A few peccadilloes take away the fifth star: the book is very US-focused, so European or Asian readers may want to look for a second source; it contains some typos; it gets overcommercial at times, as in "there is a formula for this, look it up in this other Fabozzi book"; and performance evaluation could be more detailed than "ring one of these software vendors". But great book anyway.

Good overview but too many mistakes!!!
I give it four stars ...because it is a very good introduction
and also useful to clear basic concepts...but there are multiple errors in simple math operations ,they should have reviewed before printing..

Hunter S. Thompson did not write this book
Hunter S. Thompson had NOTHING to do with this book. I have never even met the man. Please do not continue to use his name in conjunction with Commonsense Global Investing. I am sure that he would be as embarrased as I am that such a confusion of names should have occured. Maurice K. Thompson

Excellent, both on banking and project management aspects
This is the only book that covers all of the aspects of performance management in banking : 1. the analysis of performance measurement is very good even though, the coverage of financial data is overweight with respect to the rest of the book 2. the project approach is excellent and the various "pitfalls" described are so true that the people that wrote it necessarily had a good project experience, only problem is that the system architectures described did not evolve with the new edition (the word "data warehouse" is evoked once or twice) 3. As usual with this type of books, the "using the information" chapters are a bit a dry, even thought some interesting ideas are described regarding "customer information" In summary, a must read for any person trying to implement a performance indicators or Balanced Scorecard systm in its bank ("financial institutions" in the title is actually retail or commercial banking) PS : I am not an E & Y employee ... so this is not an advertising review

Essentials of Real Estate Investment

Well written
Excellent reference book for beginning and moderately experienced investors. I am a commercial real estate broker in Connecticut and New York, and own some commercial real estate. I found the book useful in giving me parameters on subjects I did not know, such as investing in land; it gave me some additional ideas on office properties and multi-family. I intend to keep the book as a good reference and consult it frequently. Overall, it gives a pretty good idea on how investment real estate is dealt with in the US.

An excellent book for starters!!! Great job....Gallagher
This is an excellent book for those who want to delve into finance. It is equivalent to 2nd year material. Finance, most often offered in 3rd year here in Canada, requires knowledge of statistics (i.e. stats, econometrics...etc Intermediate level; 2nd year) when reviewing certain budgeting options; you won't need this for the book. Don't be dismaid, your not missing key information by using this 2nd year stuff (you get all of the math too at an easier to comprehend level).
The disk included with mine helps to build your financial knowledge through a website connection and with practice, but this is not mandatory and is designed for the hardcore finance junkies like myself.
It is only a 4-star because I want more challenging material, but being a 2nd year course I have to wait until 3rd year.
