Insider secrets to the Lousiana Purchase!
This is a phenomenal book. The history of this banking family reads like an immigrant story that meets a mystery novel that meets an action adventure.

No stone is left on turn in this thorough analysis of this legendary banking family. One of the major non-jewish banking houses of its era the author, Mr.Ziegler, shows how instrumental this bank was in the forming of the United States and its continued growth.

Mr.Ziegler also shows the intricate strategies that the Barings family uses to keep the bank in the family.

If you have ever been intrigued by the darker side of banking, this book is for you. You will not be disappointed at this glimpse of history.

Solid work but somewhat dated
This is a great introductory text. My only complaint would be that it's a little dated at this point. It needs to be updated in a third edition.

A fascinating desk reference.
Since I bought this book, I have it as my desk reference. For beginners in this area, is a great comprehensive tool to help understand capital markets. For the more skilled financial readers, is an obligated desk reference.

Fabozzi and Modigliani take you in complete tour through capital markets. In the early chapters you will find valuable information about financial systems and institutions, about how the primary and secondary markets work, among many other issues.

Then the book explains debt and equity markets, finishing in the later chapters with great explanations on derivatives markets.

Definitely, I made a great investment in buying this book.

The best book on this subject.
We have been using this excellent book on our Capital Markets and Institutions course. It serves as a very solid foundation on which to build our more advanced courses on corporate finance.

An excellent primer on ALM.
Asset liability management can get rather complicated. The authors treat this subject in a very user friendly way that the layperson can understand, and the technician can get good guidance out of.

They cover all the basics really well. After studying this book, you will have a very good understanding of gap analysis, duration, shareholder value added, liquidity management, and other related subject.

Simply perfect
The book offers a perfectly simple approach to ALM in banking. I cannot imagine a more concise framework for this subject. The authors fully attain their objective of providing fun reading for a banking subject, something really out of this world.

Excellent introductory and relatively adv risk mgmt material
The author gives a brief history of the banking history, mainly in the USA and thus motivates the introduction of the several subsequent regulations put in place, and of the different methods os assesing risk and optimising capital allocation. The book excells in simple yet powerful risk management techniques for banks. I have recommended (and, in fact some times given away) this book both to my students and my colleagues in the asset management industry.

A good entry-level book on Financial Institution Risk
Using only a minimal amount of mathematics,
Professor Saunders describes a very broad
range of risks run by a Financial Institution.

A particularly good description is given
for interest rate risk management of a
standard banking portfolio.

Excellent introduction to risk management
The book is very good and it starts describing the special nature of financial institutions and the industry. Then, in the second part you have complete chapters relating to every risk management: interest rate risk (maturity, repricing gaps and duration focuses, liquidity (e.g.maturity ladder), market risk (standarized Basel Committee and VaR approaches) credit risk (including Basel Committe standarized approach, defalult risk models like credit scoring), operating costs and technology risk, FX risk, sovereign risk.

In the last part there is a good section which describes how to manage risks , including liabilty and liquidity management, deposit insurance, capital adequacy, geographic diversification, derivatives, the new credit risk management techniques and securitization.

I had the chance to have Profesor Saunders as a risk management teacher and I only say that as his classes, his book is great. It shows you the best introduction to risk management. It discusses about financial institutions (banks, insurance and securities). That book just helped me to see financial institutions under the risk focus. I really recommend this book to understand risk management.

The Best Book on Financial Institutions. Period.
This is probably the best book in risk management available today. This is due to the combination of breadth and depth of the text. The author gently introduces the student to an important subject and explains with pains how to manage each and every kind of risk. The two chapters on Interest rate risk are absolutely fabulous. There is a sense of continuity because the concepts you learn in one chapter has applications in another. The problems at the end of the chapters are are also challenging and will require an in-depth understanding of the subject. This book is the ultimate.

NOT a how-to book!
This is an excellent review of the e-commerce industry but don't be misled: it is NOT a how-to book in the classic sense; there are no step-by-step instructions or specific strategies. In this sense, the title is misleading. In all other respects it is a very good book.

Helpful, but who knows in this day and age
I think his analysis is compelling, but can you really establish a methodology in a time when the nasdaq in constantly fluctuating

Astonishingly Brilliant in its Excellence!!
I can say without hyperbole that this book is 1,000 times better than any book ever published. Electronic commerce jumps to life and dances on the pages in front of you.

Really Helpful Info
Breaking into I-Banking is so competitive that I feel I need all the help I can get. This guide was filled with a lot of truly "insider info" such as interview tips, pros and cons of the industry, and how the best companies are doing. The On the Job section gave a good idea of the general career path to follow and how to best leverage my skills. I've been sharing the guide with my classmates (sorry Wetfeet) and they've been so enthusiastic about it, I felt compelled to recommend it to other students. This is a great resource for getting started in your career development in Investment Banking.

Really helpful
This is a great overview to the investment banking industry, and I found it to be extremely current as well, given all the recent layoffs on Wall Street. The profiles of the major firms are helpful, if brief, and the details around the key types of jobs are rich and well researched. I really liked the day-in-a-life profiles. Definitely recommend this book to those looking to research careers in i-banking.

expert information
I found the information in this guide to be very well developed and organized. Wetfeet is a name that many MBAs know and their guides are ones they go to when they want the inside track for getting the interviews and ultimately their dream job. I say this b/c I'm an MBA who looked to this particular guide along with some i-banking company guides to get me prepared for interviews. it's been a tough couple of years, but i managed to snag a key internship last summer with the help of the WF guides, and am recommending them to any other biz types who want to do well in their interviews. oh yeah: my key internship has turned into a full-time job--one of only a handful given out my particular firm. tks to wetfeet. your guides were invaluable.

not exciting but surely useful
I was slightly intimidated because the previous reviewer (anonymous) gave it such a scathing review (stating it was boring and useless) - but I ordered it from Amazon nevertheless since it is so highly rated and a (according to a friend) best seller on the subject. OK, so it isn't the most exciting read on the planet, but useless? Hardly! I found that when I applied the information with the other standard books on offshore that it was extremely useful as a selection tool. There is a lot of information contained in the 300 pages. I suggest that if readers seek excitement that they go see a film. If someone wants a book about choosing an offshore tax haven (even if boring), this is worth the price.

cool for the novice
it was worth the money for this book because I now know not to believe the hype when searching for a proper offshore location country - helps you figure out what makes a place a suitable offshore site

a useful text
This is a great book - I would give a hint to potential buyers that I have seen this rather pricey good paperback seller over at Amazon.co.uk cheaper than at Amazon.com (via Amazon Marketplace), and it appears to be internationally available. Good hunting (for the book)...and then good hunting for a tax haven!
