good for history, short on brewing information
I liked the historical information, the main reason for my rating, but was disappointed in the lack of brewing information. Maybe it will tell you enoough to get an idea of whether or not you actually want to brew Pale Ale but you won't learn the how part.

A must have for technical minded brewer's
You will be getting good information on Hops, both varieties and flavor characteristics, and malts, their flavor and color contributions. Terry Foster does an excellent job of explaining the science behind ale brewing which is applicable to most styles of brewing.

Very well done
Any homebrewer that enjoys making and drinking pale ales needs this book. As an avid reader of the Classic Beer Styles Series, I feel that the author has taken some of the best aspects of the previous 15 books and combined it all into one, making this one of the most useful in the series. The second edition of the book is a tremendous improvement over the first.

The book is longer than most of the others in the series, but only because the author broke the pale ale category into many subcategories. He does not discriminate - he explains all pretty much equally. The recipes are different and thoroughly presented; the method of dispensing each is even specified. All in all, a very useful reference for the homebrewer.

Holistic?
This guy must be from outer space!
His junk will not fly in our factories, I guarantee it!

Book has stood the test of time
I had a copy of this book for years and lost it recently. Although I remember so much of it by heart I bought another copy as it is one of the most timeless, relevant and clearly written books on deploying visual production controls. I thought that was testimony enough to the value of the book.

Just in Demand
It is a hit book just feed readers' needs - especially for value chain or Costing saving research.

It hurt my eyes...
In the quest to reduce waste, you would do well to eliminate this book from your reading list. If you are looking for a guide to visual management (tools, techniques), this book comes up (way) short. Although the author acknowledges that visual management is part of a lean workplace, it is obvious she has little knowledge or experience with either. Her utter lack of understanding of accepted terminology, redefining of basic definitions, bad examples, and other glaring errors make this book a 'must miss'. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this one (put the money in your retirement fund!)

Well worth the money
Provides an excellent, practical approach to implementing 5S and visual systems written with a real understanding of implementation issues. I used this book as the basis for training a 4,000-person site; our customers now ask if they can send their staffs to see how 5S "should be done."

Visual Systems : Harnessing the Power of the Visual
This book provides the best overall coverage of the principles and practices of visual systems for the workplace available today. It includes very wise and practical guidelines for real world implementation.

We were so impressed with the book, that we arranged for the author to be the keynote speaker at our quality forum. The live presentation was a great reinforcement of the book. I have read this book 3 times, and plan to read it again soon. I gain new insights every time I read it.

Too pricey for me
As a college student, this was a required textbook for my cinematography class. The book covers a lot of material, and is a great resource if you'd like to learn about the equipment and the industry. Chapter 4 breaks down both film and video cameras and explains it in simple language. Diagrams and photos also aide in learning about how these different cameras operate.

However, the ... pricetag is very high. The publisher is reaping profits off this one. My suggestion: try to find a used copy.

A great introduction
This is a great book for those who are starting out or have an interest in filmmaking but don't know what goes on. It takes you from how a script develops to producing the movie and editing it. On each stage of the process it gives an extensive description of the roles different crewmembers play and introduces the reader to proper terminology. I would describe it more as a reference book rather than a how-to book. What I'm disappointed about this book is that it does not give a detailed guide on the format of a script. Nor does it go deep into how to write a good story. But what it does have is a few pages on how and where to make cuts when you are editing. But one thing that I'm definitely pleased about is its very extensive guide on lighting and lots of examples all over the book. If this book contained more information on what makes a good story, I would have given it 5 stars. So if you are looking for a detailed and through guide on the techniques used in writing stories, this probably wouldn't be your best bet. But overall, It's great.

Union Entitlement vs Earning a Living
Prejudiced and unobjective account of the CAMI joint venture in Ontario. The authors, (two sociology professors and a union bureaucrat) are guilty of sloppy research and pro-union bias. Their much emphasized "unlimited access to the shop floor" was apparently wasted. This book is a golden example of a wasted opportunity. Still, it serves as an example of why transplants usually stay non-union.

Clear impact study of newer production management technics
Excellent book, very informative and readable consideration of CAMI Automotive and the implementation of "Japanese" style management. Clearly considers the worker responses over several years while describing the basics of the management approaches used. This is a a very solid and informative work.

Author Notes
I am the author of this book, and I would like to point out the mis-information the title might present. The book providea a process and the tools necessary to work on problems both in the industrial enverionment and in life. The key is clear definition of the problem itself, and then the process, tools, and techniques, available to bring it to solution. The intent was to provide the reader with the What's and How's of working the process. In business today there are goups of people and companies selling processes like this for millions of dollars. When in reality the tools are public domain. The real issue is providing the organizational support that allows creative process to root and grow.

Lorne. E. Cook Jr. Author - No Downtime

Author
First the authors name is L.E.Cook. The book was meant to walk people through the steps necessary to successfully Identify,Analyze,Develop solutions, Implement, and Evaluate their solutions. This book was meant to be used by all level of the workforce, and has been used as a tool to teach student the thinking style necessary to work through issues.Although written in the early 90's the process has not changed. If you look at what is being actively pitched in industry today,i.e.6 sigma, etc. You will find all of these lessons in the content of this book. The only thing missing is the managemnt discipline required to make it work.

Not Curremt
Just recieved the book today and discovered that it covers the 2.0 version of SureTrak which makes the software related examples out of date.

The title as listed is Construction Scheduling with SureTrak and the book itself is titled Scheduling with SureTrak. Also, amazon.com lists the book as hardcover and the delivered book is not.

Looks like it is a fine book. I like the exercises provided.

It just needs to be updated to the current version of the software.

Scheduling With Suretrak
If you are struggling with the manual that is provided with the software, then you will really appreciate this book.

The Value Growers:
The authors present some potentially useful research findings from a multi-year study undertaken by A.T. Kearney, the consulting firm. Unfortunately, they present too little of the details from the research project for the book to be as useful as it could be. The book becomes quite repetitive after several chapters and seems to have little new to say after a point. It is worth reading for the limited number of researching findings presented--just don't expect too much.

Global research delivered in straightforward style
The Value Growers addresses many important issues executives face when planning for strategic growth. The authors do a good job of translating a international study into a readible book that provides excellent case studies from around the world.

The authors rely on an interesting nautical metaphor throughtout the book as they demonstrate how to "navigate" your company to high growth and high profits. While there were parts of the book that would have benefitted from more hard data extracted from the A.T. Kearney study, I found the book well worth the read and would recommend it to any current or aspiring "C-level" executive.

Video Editing and Post-Production: A Professional Guide (Kipi Bookshelf)

Disappointing and Outdated
I was looking for something covering video post production topics completely. Although the name gives such an impression this book is not a good choice: First of all It is a little bit old fashioned and outdated. The subjects are not covered in depth and there are some parts that are really hard to understand. This is not a "guide", this is not a real "textbook" so it is inbetween.

The Best Linear Editing Book!
This text book has been used to instruct students in the technical art of linear video editing for many years. The only glitch is how many people need instruction in linear editing? It starts off with a brief history of video edting, talks about time code, editors, editing with multiple machines, gets a little technical with the analog video signal, introduces you to a typical linear post system, audio for post, how to organise your post project and ends with a look into the future. Except that the future is now!

OK - but just
I bought this book to prepare for the ASQ CQE exam. This was my primary reference book and I did pass the exam - so there must be some merit to this book. However, it is frustrating. My criticisms include:

- the index doesn't point to the right pages, making it very difficult to use (especially in an open book exam)
- some of the graphs have no labelling at all (Fig IV.28)
- some material is repeated (eg central limit theorem)

This book has some good stuff in it and is aimed at getting you through the CQE exam. It will also be useful for a practicing quality engineer. However, it is in many cases separate articles, procedures and discussions stuck together with little flow. A good review and editing would do a lot for this book.

Useful and Good But ...
As other reviewers mentioned, Pyzdek can help you make it over the CQE exam hurdle. In fact it is probably helpful for those who wish to clear the CQM or CQT hurdles. It may aslo be a helpful supplament for Six-Sigma folks. The volume also serves competently as a handbook and reference. Importantly, it includes an adequate bibilography so that the reader can easily pursue more specialized or more fundamental soruces.

But ...

Neither the material nor the presentation distinguishes this book from its many competitors.

Too often the index enties have incorrect page numbers. In an age of computer automated indexing, mistakes of this kind really grate on a reader who expects more. Further, a quality handbook should set a better example!

A concise study book for taking and passing the CQE test.
This book has just the right amount of pictures and charts to balance the text. I wanted a study book that would be used as a day to day reference and something that I could use during my CQE test to "jog" my memory. The numerous graphs help me to answer generic SPC problems better than all that verbage found in other "helpful texts".
