Special Effects in Television
Published in Paperback by Focal Press (March, 1996)
Author: Bernard Wilkie
Amazon base price: $47.95
Used price: $26.56
Average review score:

A good "text-book" on the creation of special effects.
Together with Bernard Wilkie's book 'Creating Special Effects for TV and Video' makes it to a perfect companion on the creation of special effects. If this book is a "text-book" then 'Creating Special...' may be called "work-book". The book cover every basic technique from the simplest to more complex effects. The only lack is description of motion-controle, optical printing and digital composite methodes. But no other book cover the harware of the buissnes, and thats enough to buy it

Excellent Intro to PM
I took a course in PM and was frustrated by the textbook (PM: Strategy and Implementation by DI Cleland) that was assigned so I searched the library stacks for introductory texts to Project Management. This one is one of the best. It is comprehensive and down to earth, with good clean figures and illustrations. Nuthin' fancy, just a good and clearly written introduction to project management.

The Cleland book is written for perhaps MBA or civil engineering students who will be looking at the planning and management of international scope projects. It is an encyclopedic book with epic scope but little nuts and bolts information. It might make a handy reference but is not real helpful to someone who needs to know the basic terms and concepts used by working project managers. The Gido and Clements book fits that bill and frankly I would recommend it to the MBAs and civil engineers too if they were new to PM.

Exogenous barriers to entry and market structure
I studied this book in my first year of graduate school in economics in a course on Industrial Organization. I highly recommend this book. It is NOT a text book, it does not review the state of the art in I.O., it is Sutton's theory about market structure and concentration as shaped by EXOgenous barriers to entry.

I liked the book because it tries to explain market structure using OBSERVABLE variables, because it tests the theory both via case study and via econometric methods and because it is full of innovative ideas. I want to mention in particular the way in which Sutton tackles the problem of multiplicity of equilibria, what he calls "the bound approach"

A few months ago Sutton published a companion book called Technology and Market Structure in which he carries over the same line of research to endogenous barriers to entry.

Technimanagement: The Human Side of the Technical Organization
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall PTR (28 August, 1997)
Author: David B. Brown
Amazon base price: $27.80
Used price: $3.59
Collectible price: $3.60
Average review score:

Good summary of management techniques and principles
We've been using this book as our text in an Engineering Management class at Santa Clara University. Brown provides a good survey of management techniques such as Theory X and Theory Y and principles such as the Peter Principle, Parkinson's Law, and Deming's 14 obligations of management.

Focusing primarily on the challenges of managing technical professionals, the author projects Theory Y into the age of flat flexible organizations. His discussions of informal organizations and concepts such as authentic (bottom-up) authority are interesting, but he seems to avoid anecdotal reasoning. This seems to be deliberate, but sometimes leads to redundant writing with lots of opinions rather than real life examples.

If the author revises this book by adding more examples to illustrate his points, I might change my rating to 5 stars.

Endogenous barriers to entry and market structure
I read this book in my first year of graduate study in Economics in a course on Industrial Organization. I highly recommend this book. It is NOT a text book, it does not go over the state of the art in I.O., it is Sutton's theory about market structure and concentration as shaped by ENDOgenous barriers to entry. This book is completely self contained but it carries over the line of research that Sutton started years ago with Sunk Costs and Market Structure in which he studied the role of Exogenous barriers to entry.

As with his previous book, I like it because it explains market structure using OBSERVABLE variables, because it tests the theory both via case study and via econometric methods and because it is full of innovative ideas. The way in which Sutton tackles the problem of multiplicity of Nash equilibria, what he calls "the bound approach", is still making me think one year later.

A book worth of recommendation
Television Fundamentals is a must for every professional who works in audio/video. In such subject Mr. Watkinson is a great Master. Congratulations for this nice work.

PS: I strongly suggest for the next editions of this book that it could be printed in a better format in such way we can see the figures clearer (sorry the claim, nothing is perfect).

Total Productive Maintenance: An American Approach
Published in Hardcover by Industrial Press, Inc. (January, 1992)
Author: Terry Wireman
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $25.50

Excellent introduction to maintenance and TPM
"Total Productive Maintenance: An American Approach" provides the reader with a good introduction to both TPM and maintenance in general. The author recognizes that most U.S. companies do not have the prerequisites for TPM - a work order system, preventive maintenance schedules, CMMS, inventory controls, etc. - adequately implemented and wisely chooses to cover these topics in some detail before discussing TPM implementation. In doing so, he provides the reader with a wonderful introduction to maintenance management.

Typical of Terry Wireman, the book is written in no-nonsense language that gets straight to the point. He resists the temptation to include unnecessary topics and details, and thus is able to adequately cover TPM and many of the maintenance basics in only 186 pages - a true achievement. In addition, Wireman includes several useful tools, such as a maintenance organization maturity grid, a list of typical metrics with benchmarks, and a business case template.

This book is a worthwhile read for anybody involved in maintenance.

Total Quality Environmental Management : An ISO 14000 Approach
Published in Hardcover by Quorum Books (March, 1998)
Author: Vasanthakumar N. Bhat
Amazon base price: $88.95
Collectible price: $173.15
Average review score:

A solid environmental TQM handbook for executives.
Overall it was a good read and easily digestable. It was written for both upper management and functional level management looking to address environmental risks. The book is extremely repetitive, and at times spends too much time explaining definitions of specific tools. It is very detailed, yet readily understandable to non-experts in the field.
