Nutrient Requirements of Swine
Published in Paperback by National Academy Press (December, 1988)
Author: National Research Council
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $27.92
Average review score:

Excellent resource for informed swine producers
This edition of the Nutrient Requirements of Swine is an excellent resource for swine producers or feed manufacturers with some knowledge of swine nutrition. The edition in question provides excellent tables on nutritional requirements for all classes of swine and also provides some of the best tables available that describe the nutritional composition and quality of common feedstuffs used in swine feeds. A word of advice, however; it would be well advised for a person interested in this title to have at least a background in the nutrition of pigs. If the reader does not, then the information contained within will read much like Gray's Anatomy.

A well-done text w/ plenty of support
I'll make two separate sets of comments - one for professors and one for students.

Students first... There is a well-done website that accompanies the book, which includes outlines, sample tests & quizzes, and related study materials. The text is about average in terms of readability in comparison to other texts on the subject, and there are plenty of real-world examples to illustrate OM concepts (OM texts, as a general rule, don't read well). You may be able to get by with a previous edition if the textbook contents are your priority, but be advised, however, that the seventh edition contains some new and revised material, a few chapters have been re-arranged, and there are some different end-of-chapter exercises and cases.

For professors... You are probably already aware that OM can be challenging for the professor as well as the student, esp. with respect to where to aim the course - to the managers and generalists, or to the technicians & quantitatively-oriented. Heizer and Render have enough material to support either approach. The text is accompanied with ample instructor resources, including a CD and a website with slideshows, notes, outlines, and various other pedagogical tools. The testbank is easy to use, but should be supplemented with some quantitative short problems (if a quantitative approach is important to you).
Heizer and Render have also done a fair job of keeping the material up-to-date, which has resulted, after seven editions, in a pretty decent product. For me, the instructor resources and the comprehensiveness of the content (adequate support for either a managerial or quantitative approach) make Heizer and Render a good choice by comparison to other OM texts.

Plant Engineers and Managers Guide to Energy Conservation (8th Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Unknown (15 December, 2001)
Author: Albert Thumann
Amazon base price: $100.00
Average review score:

Excellent "how to" book very informative
This book is a very good guide to explaining the micro and macroeconomics of energy conservation. The author uses a well thought out progression of chapters; the Role of the Plant Engineer in Energy Management, onto perhaps the most important chapter, Energy Economic Decision Making, which includes sample solved problems. Later chapters progress to electrical system optimization, utility optimization, heat transfer and losses, HVAC systems and cogeneration, and finally the future of energy conservation, where the macroeconomic effect of implementing current technology is discussed. The DOE is currently sponsoring projects in various common industrial processes that consume much of the nations energy, such as petroleum refining, and pulp processing where conservation and the latest technology will shave quads of BTU's off the nation's energy consumption. The early chapters in the book tell how to prioritize the conservation measures in a particular plant, the value of the present expenditures v.s. the future for estimating payback periods. The text is very well written, but it is surprising that a book on its sixth edition should be so full of typos, the grammatical ones can be figured out, but the ones concerning the solved problems should be corrected. A seventh edition with corrections and this would be a 5 star book.

This book clarified types of manufacturers and strategies.
I think this is one of the better books explaining various types of manufacturing and the possible strategies the companies would use. This book also details vertical integration pros and cons. The person reading this book should have some knowledge of strategic planning and cost accounting to get the full impact. A required reading for the APICS Systems and Technology test. I would not have passed the test without this book.

SimProcess LIVE! on this book
I used to use ModSim by CACI on NeXT machine. Now CACI have the easier and PC-compatible, called SimProcess. This book is not only about Simulation sytem, but the great SimProcess user manual. This book is actually a geneal book of Simulation, not a Risk analysis or elses. CD-ROM, come with this book, is the SimProcess. Buy one get another free. But the software can be downloaded from the company website.
