Beside Ourselves: Our Hidden Personality in Everyday Life
Published in Paperback by Consulting Psychologists Press (October, 1994)
Author: Naomi L. Quenk
Amazon base price: $17.95
Used price: $11.94
Average review score:

One of the best I've read on the subject
This book is a great intro to how your life can be undermined by not being aware of your inferior function. Quenk is a master at presenting each of the eight functions and how we can lose control of these functions if we don't know exactly how our inferior function can take control when we're stressed, tired, irritated, etc. I've read a couple of books on personality type but I don't think I really understood the eight functions until this book. By going back to the basics (using Jung's typology instead of Keirsey's temperament theory), Quenk is able to see farther than most authors I've read. I also liked Quenk's discussion of the auxilliary function, which I'm slowly learning might be the most helpful function in becoming a complete person. With the information in this book, I feel like I can empathize so much more with other types than I could before. This is especially useful for an INTJ like myself who can have problems attending to people's feelings. I recommend this book and another excellent book: Lenore Thomson's Personality Type: An Owner's Manual.

Breathtaking information, deepened my understanding of MBTI.
WOW! New information! I am an avidly interested lay person who, since discovering Myers-Briggs through other popular books on the subject. has used MB informally and superficially for years in day-to-day personal and work settings. But MB had never even crossed my mind as relevant or helpful on really bad days when I or those near me were stressed to the point of being "beside themselves". But this book explains that people feeling, speaking and acting out of character during different kinds (depending on their Type, of course!) of stress can be understood and predicted just as successfully as their preferences, feelings and reactions on a normal, less stressful day can be understood and predicted. The beauty of the inferior function analysis really has to be read to be appreciated. If you are interested in Myers-Briggs, you owe it to yourself to read this book. For me, it was the eye opener of the year! (So far.) Granted, I love Myers-Briggs, but my jaw has not closed since I picked up the book. I am an ISFJ, by the way, living with an ESFP. Thank you, Naomi L. Quenk, for writing this book and thereby lifting the tent canvas up to offer us lay folk a deeper appreciation of the broad applicability and plain old day to day helpfulness of Myers-Briggs personality type theory.

Great overview
I am not a psychology or mental health professional, but I found this book fascinating. It uses enough theory to be credible, but didn't get me lost in terminology or assumptions. Not only did I find this book to be beneficial for understanding myself, but as a business consultant I find it a great tool for helping organizations understand their personalities.

**A valuable and different perspective **
I am an experience MBA, and I was skeptical about another venture into exploring my own creativity.

It turns out Lynne Levesque's book Breakthrough Creativity was definitely a breakthrough in my perceptions. Creativity is not just for artists and advertising. I never really saw my engineering and project management work as "creative," but Levesque's book helped me recognize how confined one's perspective can be. I always sought creativity through sailing or sports. I didn't appreciate how it can play a role in everything I do.

This fresh outlook that we are all creative, with individually different creative talents, was a simple but important revelation. It was interesting to discover how much we limit our own creative endeavors. Levesque's metaphors analyzing creativity are imaginative and instructive, and her recommendations were very practical. Her recommendations are clearly grounded on her own business experience.

Levesque links creativity with resilience and a sense of possibility, a very powerful concept in today's troubled world.

I highly recommend reading this breakthrough book.

Incredible resource!
Lynne's model of the 8 Talents of creative expression is a wonderful resource for creative individuals and innovative companies. Using the MBTI type criteria, she clearly describes each type in terms of creative strengths and weaknesses with helpful resolutions for collaboration. This book is a real breakthrough in the field of creativity. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Excellent tool for self growth
In Breakthrough Creativity, Levesque opens the reader's eyes to the individual talents that he or she possesses. Learning about your orientation to the world, how you process and analyze infomation, and how, exactly, you are creative is the first step in taking advantage of your innate talents.

Levesque reveals that you DO have creative talents, and she guides you through a series of steps to learn about what those talents are, and how you can implement a game plan to improve upon those talents.

This book is great for anyone who wants to learn how to improve upon themselves. It is also the perfect tool to learn about how to interact with friends, family and co-workers who have different creative talents.

By reading the book, I have become empowered to capitalize upon my strengths. More importantly, I am learning how to overcome barriers and explore how I must adjust my behavior to be fully creative. In addition, I have used it to learn about how well I know people who are close to me, and how to revise my attitude and have a higher level of respect toward people who have very different talents than me.

This book is eye-opening and refreshing. I give it the highest recommendation!

Change Is Easy Now That I Know My Personality Type
You can't change unless you know what you're doing wrong. Finding out my personality type has opened my eyes to why I've been eating wrong, why I have become a couch potato, how others have influenced my lifestyle habits. But no more! Being aware of my type has shown me not only the challenges my type presents, but best of all, how I can use the strengths of my personality type to change. It just makes sense to make changes that are comfortable for my type than to try to change in a way that worked for somebody else. With 16 different personality types, I shouldn't expect to making healthy changes the way everybody else does. It makes me feel that I'm an individual and should take care of my personal needs. Now I have the way! Thanks to Roberta for making it so easy.

Great way to manage personal health
"A book of this nature is beneficial in looking at one's inner self and finding the way to manage personal health (blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, anxiety and depression). This is the way health is going these days. No longer is just taking a pill the answer."

This book is one of your best investments in yourself!
"At last, a book written with more than the "do's and don'ts" of dieting. This book goes beyond the "readiness to change" point in the process of food habits' management to the way you can make decisions about your health and weight for a lifetime. It helps you learn the "whys and hows" of making decisions about your health, food, eating, exercise and activity, all based on your personality type. You will understand more about past failures and how to make choices that make a difference this time. You will find your personality type, self assess and learn about the way you think and make choices. The format is easy to use, the health information is accurate, the decision tree is invaluable and the recipes are great. This book will be one of your best investments in yourself. I found this a very refreshing perspective after so many books that missed the mark. I highly recommend it."

Handbook of Key Economic Indicators

Essential for market analysts and conscientious researchers!
The Handbook of Key Economic Indicators clearly stands head and shoulders above competing texts in its depth. The first thing I like about this book is that it provides detailed information on important data series and is an invaluable resource to those tracking the nearly daily release of non-financial data. In addition to providing the necessary methodological background for each indicator, the work explains how to interpret each indicator and specifically suggests what to look for when analyzing data reports. I also found that the explanations of the numerous potential sources of monthly volatility are extremely useful- the explanations are clear indications of the author's extensive experience with the data. I was glad to see the Handbook isn't just a rehash of the first edition--it is very current and includes important new sections on the 1996 Boskin Report, the 1998 revisions to CPI (including the impact on inflation growth rates), and the switch in real GDP to a chained dollar basis and how one works with the new data. What I like about this book is that it not only covers the basics in news release interpretation that market analysts want but also that it is an excellent reference for researchers who need a thorough understanding of the major non-financial economic indicators. What sets this work apart is that it has the depth and coverage of methodologies and special topics that similar texts do not have. For the analyst or researcher working with these complicated and often misunderstood data series, I would highly recommend this book!

A comprehensive, insightful look at key economic indicators
R. Mark Rogers has written a comprehensive, thorough overview of the key U.S. economic indicators. His book would be particularly useful for analysts new to the business, or to seasoned analysts who need to know more about the nitty gritty behind the numbers. Rogers' handbook is filled with more technical information that some people will ever need, and some will find the level of detail intimidating and somewhat cumbersome. However, the compilation of all this information in one source is extremely valuable, and is particularly useful for those who want a deeper understanding of what the economic data say. The level of technical sophistication is what sets this book apart from others. For those who want to understand more about U.S. economic data than the sound bytes on the news or the quotes in the paper provide, this is the book to read.

Comprehensive, very technical, but NOT user friendly.
This work is highly technical. It provides the genesis and sources for all the leading U.S. economic indicators. A dweeb's delight - however it lacks meaningful illustrations. A few charts were provided, but - like the dismal science, the actual text, tables, and raw data are dull, drab, and unimaginative. For my money, a far more "user-friendly" overview is necessary. This book needs some meaningful graphs, colorful illustrations, and an anectode or two. It could have been made far simpler, and easier to understand. As is, the book has only limited value - especially to the investing public. It's a shame the author went to all that work compiling a bunch of data, but, like most dweeb economists, he doesn't effectively communicate.

SoulTypes, Finding the Spiritual Path That Is Right for You
As a growing Christian and spiritual director/companion, I highly recommend this book. It not only helps us to understand but celebrate who we are, assuring us there are others like us. From such affirmation we are gently led, not into ways in which we can "improve," but into ways which will enrich both us and our worlds.

Great step by step understanding of spiritual journeys
by personality type. This book separates each personality type into the meaning of the dominant, auxiliary, tertiary and inferior parts and further describes the importance and usefulness of each of these parts in the evolution of the spirit. Easy to read and understand. Great reference material that will be used even after it is put down the first time, and as one gains insight into personality typing and spiritual growth. Helps in understanding yourself and your relations with others. That is, as long as you can accurately type them or they have already typed themselves!

Great resource for exploring spirituality using the MBTI!
This is a great resource for those exploring their spirituality and familiar with the MBTI. It is insightful, practical, easy to read and comprehensive. I got so excited about the book that I was unable to to read it straight through. Instead, I've been hopping through the pages in my typical "N" (iNtuitive)style.

A super introduction to type with children
I found this book an easy read with many examples from daily life. The chapters were not too long, which made it easy to read one and think about the ideas presented. Mrs. Murphy's provides the reader with advice and help to parents and students themselves in helping to appreciate and understand one another. The first chapter is essential in understanding Mrs. Murphy's approach in using the type-theory.

She has great insight into the personality. I especially found her examples helpful in explaining the types and their behaviors. If someone is looking for a book to understand theirselves, their children, thier students, or even their spouse, this book is worth the buy.

One more thing. This book is for parents, educators, or anyone trying to grasp the concepts of the MBTI. Since I have read it many times, I have a clearer understanding of personality types.

Great Insight on how the preferences evolve in children
This book explains the individual preference in a very concise and easy to understand format. Through its explanation, one can see why children behave differently. It offers tips on how to help children grow in a more balanced way so that they can enjoy the strength of their preferences and minimize the impact of the weakness from their preference by learning effective coping skills.

How Well Does Your IEP Measure Up? Quality Indicators for Effective Service Delivery

The best!!
It realy outlines step by step what an IEP should focus on and say from the first page to the goals and measures. It really was a good book to have along side knowing the laws and rights that other books focus on- it helps you understand how to truly make and IEP individual for your child (very ASD focused). Good for parents and administrators.

A fantastic IEP resource!
This is the best book I have seen yet relating to IEPs for children with autism. The authors focus heavily on creating measurable goals and objectives...something I have not found in other IEP books I have read. I highly recommend this book for any parent of a child with ASD who has an upcoming IEP.

Intimacy and Type
What I find most fascinating is how we can change during the course of our lives. The section "Personal Growth as Individuation" particulary intrigued me, especially the following: "[Individuation is a developmental process] that requires you to start dealing with your less-preferred functions (or what you might call your less conscious side) by midlife...in order to become more integrated and whole...As you go through life you find it is more functional to be able to use all aspects of the self to maximize your ability to handle a variety of situations and people." As we nudge our less-preferred functions out of the shadows and into the light, we may discover that we have blossomed into fuller selves.

An absolute must have for any and all couples!
My wife and I recently ventured into marriage counseling after a separation. Our counselor gave us this book to borrow after about the fourth session and after we had completed a myers briggs test. It has been by far the best resource we've seen. Lightbulbs are going off with every turn of the page. You have to read this book.

The Investor's Guide to Economic Indicators

My Economics Rabbi!
Mr. Nelson wrote this book many years ago. It is still useful today in teaching the practicing economist or investment analyst what statistics are useful in predicting economic dynamics. His belief in using statistics that are not subject to revisions was a revelation to me as should be to anyone who uses historical economic data for forecasting in real time.

Simple Explanations of the Big Economic Picture
This is a great little book. It explains the basics of economics in terms of the monthly and quarterly government numbers. It teaches you what numbers are really real and what numbers are bogus.

Tracking the Vanishing Frogs: An Ecological Mystery
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (June, 1994)
Author: Kathryn Phillips
Amazon base price: $22.95
Used price: $1.97
Collectible price: $10.21

Great book-highly recommended
This is a wonderful book which has covers the current issue of declining amphibian populations well in regards to the pet trade, habitat loss and fragmentation, and exotic species as well as specific species such as the golden toad and california's red-legged frog. Its an adventure as well as a source of information. The only reservation I had was that it didn't cover chemicals (pesticides) or frog deformities as issues towards species loss.

Scary and timely
This reads like a novel, but the subject is non-fiction: the disappearance of frogs from our planet, what it means, and what we must do about it. Recommended to all adults and thinking teen-agers who are interested in the planet.

Fantastic! Well researched and written!
This is a facinating and gripping tale about an animal that is simple, slimey, and generally not well thought of by humans. Our desensitivity to the legitimate role in our world of reptiles and amphibians (from the bible to the Sound of Music) has left them without an advocate when they need it most. Kathryn Phillips explains why their loss is anything but insignificant.

In the old days, coal miners would take a canary into the mines with them and listen to it sing all day. If the canary stopped singing and fell over dead, the miners didn't stop to wonder why or grieve its passing, they got the heck out of the mine as fast as they could. That was the very reason they took the canary in with them. Frogs are the canaries on this earth. But here on earth, we don't have the easy option of just getting the heck out of here as fast as we can. Kathryn Phillips tells you why with the power of a fiction writer but does it as only a professional journalist could with clarity, accuracy and completeness.
