Paul Pope brings a quiet, old-school sensibility to noisy, postmodern comics with Heavy Liquid. This graphic novel, set in the late 21st century, focuses on all the classic elements of detective and adventure stories: lost love, mysterious clients, a package everyone wants, and a tired, barely willing protagonist. The narrative details--such as the eponymous liquid, which is part munition, part drug, and much stranger than any character imagines--are calculated to foil the reader's assumptions, and the expressionistic artwork blends simple colors with bold lines to draw the eyes onward. It seems safe to say that cyberpunk's not dead. --Rob Lightner

Best of the best
I wish I saw this novel on more Top 10 lists, but oh well. Nevertheless, I demand that you buy this book right now, and with the hefty discount Amazon is providing, you can't afford to pass this up! With a cover price of 30 beans, I can understand why some would balk initially at purchasing this, but now you have no excuse! Thirty percent off is the deal of the century for this book, and I paid full cover at my local shop! If you are a fan of modern fiction, fine graphical art, or just insane ideas, you owe it to yourself to pick this up at Amazon's great discount.

Set in the near future, the main question in Heavy Liquid is "what is Heavy Liquid?" I'm not going to tell you, but I will tell you that the characters in this story are all affected by this strange substance, part highly addictive drug, part... I don't want to spoil it, but suffice it to say that Pope's concepts are always first rate. As someone else mentioned, fans of PK Dick should take note of this work and read it.

The art is Paul's signature style, completely unmistakably his and no one else's. The lines themselves form beautiful abstract art, in addition to the concrete images they suggest, but his execution is so fluid that nothing is stale or static; these pages rip with dynamics.

All in all, among the very best graphic novels of all time, and considering that it is the work of one man, it qualifies as genius.

One of the best graphic novels I've ever read
Heavy Liquid takes place in a not so distant future, and the plot circles around a man only known as "S".He''s mission is to deliver a pack of the ultimate high: Heavy Liquid to a mysterious collector. Heavy Liquid has everything a good comic should have and some more, read it.

Awesome book!
Man, what a cool book. You got the futuristic sci-fi vibe perfectly mixed with this gritty, urban scene harboring an almost retro, beautifully illustrated chase story. Really cool stuff.
If you like old 60's flicks like Velvet Hustler, movies featuring the hip psuedo-anti-hero who's just tryin' to do his thing and not get caught/killed in the process, check this one out.

Ignition: An Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellants
Published in Textbook Binding by Rutgers University Press (April, 1972)
Author: John D. Clark

Entertainingly Educational!
Of course, being a hard-core rocket geek, I first read this book hoping to learn about one of my favorite subjects. What I found was a wonderful, personal account of the men behind the technology. This book is an entertaining read that manages to teach quite a bit along the way. My favorite quote from the book is where Clark describes Red Fuming Nitric Acid (RFNA), a powerful oxidizer, as a substance that "attacks flesh with the avidity of a school of pirhana." That one passage did more to instill a sense of caution in my chosen hobby than anything else I've read or heard before or since.

Conveys the can-do, pioneering spirit of early rocketry
This book has the right mix of technical details, descriptions of experiments with spectacular results, background info about the why's and how's, and about the politics involved. It is a very engaging and uplifting book because Clark captured a lot of the enthusiasm he had for rockets.

Funny & informative book
The author is a suberb writer as well as a chemist. Umpteen years of funny stories are threaded through the history of rocket propulsion. My favorite is the attempt to use skunk oil as fuel.......

Excellent Guide to Workings of ASPEN Process Model
The book is an absolutely practical treatise of applied thermodymamics. The explanations of how to use property estimation methods are excellent, but invaluable are the comments on their accuracy and recommendations as to when to use which method.

The book served as my operating manual for the ASPEN software for modeling chemical processes. The book documented nearly every method used by ASPEN.

Comprehensive, easy to understand
I was a bit unconfortable when I bought this book since I was suspicious that this one was one of those unreadable thermodynamic books. Fortunately I was wrong. This book provides you with a complete treatment of the properties of gases and liquids in a plain language stressing the understanding of the basic laws governing the behavior of liquids and gases instead of the mathematic that goes with it. The treatment of the topics is very suitable for engineers since it allows quick understanding of the phenomena and provides a wealth of correlations and methods for estimating properties. The appendixes contain all kind of basic information indeed helpful for applying the correlations showed. Without any hesitation, this book is well worth its price.

A Fascinating Read
George Piccard has put together a fascinating book here with his debut effort, LIQUID CONSPIRACY. I found Mr. Piccard's work to be intriguing. I believe most informed readers would be intrigued, too. He ties together a wide series of events and mysteries, and he presents an interesting case. JFK. Area 51. Marilyn Monroe. Cults. Roswell. Black helicopters. And more. I recommend LIQUID CONSPIRACY. You do not have to accept Mr. Piccard's theories to find the reading of LIQUID CONSPIRACY to be a worthwhile experience.

Good Stuff
This book offers readers a plethora of cover-ups, political intrigue, and conspiracies. The range of subjects varied a great deal, but were all tied together quite well. I especially liked the writing style used by the author. Mr. Piccard put the emphasis on the content rather than on his prose. The only problem I had, along with my wife who holds an English degree, is that there are more than a few typos and other minor problems, but that should be blamed on the editor.

review for Liquid Conspiracy
The Liquid Conspiracy has made my world outlook a little stranger.

Would highly recommend this to anybody who is interested in MIND CONTROL, Kennedy Conspiracy, Marilyn Monroe or Cults. But this book has a little bit of everything: Black Helicopters, Contrails, Roswell, DULCE BASE - it's all tied together!

Piccard does a good job of bringing the reader up to speed on the conspiracy, providing in depth analysis of MK ULTRA and its tentacles reaching into every aspect of our reality. Great goods on Monroe, JFK and their connection to Maury Island, and Groom Lake base.

Not just a book about Japan...
William R. LaFleur gives us a book which is well made. Piece by piece Mr. LaFleur goes over the history of abortion, buddhism, family planning, sexuality attitudes and even woman's lib in Japan. By the time he reaches his conclusion, you can't help but feel like you, yourself, have also researched and processed all the information.

Near the end, when he compares the Japanese ideas to American ideas on the issue, you can't help but feel that maybe it was all a well placed trap, to get you to look at the whole mess from a different point of view, not just the pro-life/pro-choice, good/bad, yes/no, on/off American way (where every issue only has two sides and the winner gets total victory, so no mercy!)

You might not like some of the points made, but it will sure force you to think.

An Excellent Book, Well Written and Well Researched
I can heartily recommend this book. I once took a course taught by LaFleur which was one of the best courses on understanding Japanese Buddhism and the practice of abortion. This book matches his good lecturing style.

What is interesting is that in the West abortion is viewed in primarily negative terms, as is infanticide. LaFleur's initial attitude was: How can Japanese engage in this kind of activity on such a large scale? What role does belief in reincarnation (according to Buddhism) play?

Rather than bringing in Western moral preconceptions that might prejudge his discussion, LaFleur treats this sensitive topic with great insight and sensitivity. This book will be a very interesting read for those interested in Japanese society and Buddhism.

An excellent read for the student of modern day Japan.
Liquid Life is an intriging look at abortion in modern day Japan. The argument is well formulated and the publication is well researched. Liquid Life is an excellent read. Those attempting to understand Japan MUST comprehend the abortion issue in the country today. *****

A great book - information overload
This is a very useful reference to have if you work extensively on HPLC. I find its of more use to understand concepts ...there is a lot of information here.

Which means - if you are looking for a solution to a problem and you want to research separation theory - a great book.

If your looking for a quick fix to an HPLC problem - not as good. This is a detailed, extensive and well written text on HPLC Method development - wish there was more on validation here though.

Plactical and Rational method Development!
Rational Method development for HPLC is resented. Instruction of rational development of 3-solvent separation system is excellent. This book also has useful know-hows and tools in practical laboratory experiments, such as strength of hydrogen bonding of base silica and nomograph for estimation of "solvent strength" for reversed phase HPLC.

an excellent book on pratical HPLC
The book is useful for gerenal operator who are both novice and expert. It do is pratice. It's better give another chapter for troubleshooting and maintence.

Basic HPLC and CE of Biomolecules

So brilliant that I cried--twice!
This is without a doubt the most brilliant and poignant depiction of HPLC and CE of biomolecules in modern history. My extreme hyperactivity disorder usually means that I'm not able to sit still for such weighty topics--not without large amounts of abused Ritalin; but Cunico's work was so compelling and finely wrought that I found myself spellbound, even when drunk, even when driving in the backseat of a stolen car across the Mexican border at Tecate. I am not going to recommend drinking heavily and stealing cars. But I do recommend BASIC HPLC and CE OF BIOMOLECULES by Robert L. Cunico. By the way, I am extremely drunk right now.

Basic HPLC and CE of Biomolecules
This is a book that should be on the desk of anyone who is involved in analytical development of biomolecules and biopharmaceuticals. The content is well organized and written in a format that is easy to grasp and understand. The content covers almost all the different modalities of HPLC analyses and applications and provides real life examples of the techniques. It includes innumerable suggestions on how best to develop a validatable HPLC method and analyze the data appropriately.

I would highly recommend this book to both new and old members of biotechnology, especially the developmental, analytical, and quality assurance groups where there is frequently a need to implement a solid reliable method for analyzing biomolecules in a more rational fashion.

Liquid Earth

An Apt Statement of the Times
"Liquid Earth" reads like one of Pickover's on-line experiments in
collaborative writing. It is like the Internet, itself -- a
stream of collective consciousness. The book also depicts
something like a human reaction to information overload, living on
Moore's Law accelerating cultural curve. Living in a Fracturing
Reality is like experiencing landmark buildings crashing to the
ground for no good reason. The book is in fact poignantly
topical. It inspires reflection.

Wow -- what a ride...
Like drinking a Big Gulp too fast, this book will give you brain freeze -- but in a good way! It begins with a strange encounter and never looks back. Cliff Pickover weaves an interesting story centered on shifting reality (Does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care?) caused by a growing space-time rupture. Bring along a cat, a heroine, and robot, and you have quite a crew.

Like Pickover's non-fiction books, there is plenty of science and other stuff to learn here, only this time wrapped up in an often hilarious, very entertaining sci-fi story. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading other stories in the Neoreality Series...

Review of Liquid Earth
This book has some of the most hilarious scenes I've ever encountered in a book, and it's worth reading even just for its fight / escape scenes and its extraordinary climax. It will appeal to a vast audience, from lovers of science fiction and fantasy to futurists and serious philosophers, not to mention aficionados of fine literature and even Biblical scholars. As well as entertaining us, the author gives us serious pause to reflect on our station in life and history. In a move that would make Salvador Dali proud, Clifford Pickover lends flavor to a larger movement which he characterizes as his "Neoreality Series", introducing a scale for measuring unlikely events, referred to as "The Hawking Reality Scale" with deciReal units to "measure the intensity of reality fragmentation". With a tip of the hat to the older movement in Italian cinema, Pickover's use of the word Neoreality may very well come to be the catchword for our own age in cinema too, describing equally well such films as "eXistenZ," "Fight Club," "Being John Malkovich," and "The Matrix". Take this fantastic journey with charming girl prodigy Mink, her adorable robot kitten Carrington and the joketelling poet android Mr. Plex as they traverse through forests, jungles, ancient ruins and a small New England town, seeking refuge from extraordinary villainous creatures such as "Cheetah Killers" and Gharials in their quest to discover reality-shattering chronoplasmids. Written by the great science popularizer, math puzzler and world expert on fractals, Clifford Pickover's colorful book will appeal to older and and younger readers alike. It will make old people feel young and young people feel old! If you have enjoyed C.S. Lewis, L. Frank Von Baum and Daniel Pinkwater, you will also enjoy Liquid Earth; equally so if you have enjoyed Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and William Gibson.

OK as far as it goes, but my goodness...
I got this for one of my kids, who was young, and wanted to know why it was difficult to make rockets.

For this purpose, the book is great. It shows you several aspects of the design problems. You can see this from the table of contents - it tries very hard to cover as much ground as is sensible.

The diffculty for European readers is that the units are all imperial, that is, Gallons, Pounds, feet, inches, and so forth. This makes the numerical details - a sense of scale for what is being discussed - quite inaccesible for most of us over here. It's worth noting that also lead to the downfall of at least one recent space mision to Mars.

Remarks like "its not rocket science" can certainly be shown as having a truthful sort of origin by looking at this. To "do" anything with this book, you would absolutely have to develop further and deeply in the following disciplines;

1. Chemistry
2. Metallurgy
3. Thermodynamics
4. Mechanics
5. Experience with CAD, esp. simulation with solid and liquid state systems.
6. Maths
7. Electronics,
8. Reliability...
9. ???

I wonder if any single mind could get round all of these, possibly, but you would be pretty lucky to get the chance nowadays. Education isn't cheap.

I don't think, though that there is any harm in wanting to get as close to this as you like. The book is truly wonderful, almost a work of art, and even if jobs in this area are scarce, this has got to be worthwhile. Read this, do the background study, get a degree or two, and you may eventually get into industrial plant design, maybe even medical electronics, aerospace, or something. Why not? The world would be a better place if more people would dream a bit and aspire to do the hard stuff. I am full of admiration for people who did better than I did and are working in these kinds of fields.

I'm going to get a few more books in this series, though I have to say, I'm a bit nervous about ordering books with titles including the words "missile propulsion". We live in troubled times.

GO GET IT!
As already mentioned above....do not question the price! It is really worth every single cent! I am not a LRE-designer nor do I work in any similar branche...you'll need to work yourself through the subject and especially through the mathematics, but you will be able to design your own rocket motor. It really goes into detail.
This is not only one of the best books I own...it is THE BEST!

GO GET IT!

Bible for the Design of LRE's
The book has about everything one needs to know as a liquid rocket engine designer. A must for any propulsion engineer.
