An excellent primer on drafting IEPs
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any parent who has a child in special education. If you are looking for a book to understand and even draft IEPs, this is debatably the best, clearest book out there.

Reviewing and drafting IEPs can be very daunting. This book helps the reader (whether parent, school official, or legal professional) understand the IEP process. After reading this book, any parent will be able to better understand their child's IEP and even be able to write them.

IEP GOALS
This book should be required reading for every parent who has a child on an IEP. Assessment generates services and IEP goals, and goals inform the parent whether the services are remediating the child. Schools must follow the Law (IDEA) on how to write goals, yet, poorly written IEP goals is one of the biggest non-compliance areas. If a child's progress can not be objectively measured by correctly written goals, how are we to determine the effectiveness of the schools intervention? If you want to hold your school accountable for remediating your child, Bateman's book is a must. This book will help you be an active participant in developing your childs program for the individualized instruction they are entiltled to and help you assess if your child is recieving an appropriate education. Knowledge is power and this book will empower you!

No Special Educator should be Without a Copy
An excellent reference for programme development an implementation

The best!!
It realy outlines step by step what an IEP should focus on and say from the first page to the goals and measures. It really was a good book to have along side knowing the laws and rights that other books focus on- it helps you understand how to truly make and IEP individual for your child (very ASD focused). Good for parents and administrators.

A fantastic IEP resource!
This is the best book I have seen yet relating to IEPs for children with autism. The authors focus heavily on creating measurable goals and objectives...something I have not found in other IEP books I have read. I highly recommend this book for any parent of a child with ASD who has an upcoming IEP.

Good overview, but doesn't replace having an advocate/lawyer
This guide provides a good overview of the special education and IEP process, as well as some sample forms and letters. It also usefully collects the relevant federal statutes and regulations. But I found the descriptions of the process to be quite different from what happens here in D.C., so that ultimately its utility was somewhat limited. There is, perhaps, no solution to this -- the book can't be written for every school district in the country. So while the book is useful, in many areas you will be well served to hire a special ed consultant and/or attorney.

A Must Have Book
This book is the most complete resource that I have found. I recommend it to anyone who is entering the Special Education arena. I am a parent of a 10 year-old boy who was recently diagnosed with ADD and Dyslexia. This book helped me prepare for my IEP meeting. I especially enjoyed using the forms in the back of the book. These forms can be copied for use as letters and check lists. This book is very thorough and will walk you through the entire IEP process. This is definately a "Must Have Book"!

From a mom with a son with Tourette Syndrome
Whether you are new to the world of "special ed" or you are a seasoned veteran, attorney, Lawrence M. Siegel's book will guide you through the advocacy maze with ease. It is a valuable resource of information, including, but not limited to: an overview of special ed and the IEP process; sample IEP forms and letters; organization and planning tips; a listing of support groups, advocacy organizations and federal and state departments of education. Laws and procedures change frequently, and regulations can be different from state to state, so new editions are printed periodically. You can even take advantage of an "update service" that offers a 35% discount on any future purchases.
This is quite possibly the best resource available for assistance in navigating the path of the IEP process, so that you feel more in control of the situation. Although no published material can completely replace a knowledgeable expert or lawyer, I am now confident that I have sufficient knowledge of the IEP process to be able to be an effective advocate for my child.

Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives

Excellent step-by-step guidance
If you are involved in education and in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process in particular, this book may be a lifesaver. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is required for those individuals with a disability. How to write an IEP that complies with the law is the crux of this book.

The IEP goals are required to be measurable, an item that educators often think they have covered when in fact they have not. The authors do an excellent job of detailing how to document the Present Level of Performance (PLOP), Objectives, and Goals.

The last half of the book contains sample Best Practice PLOPs, Objectives, and Goals. Although it is filled with acronyms (as are most texts involving government regulation) at least they define each of them before proceeding to use them. For those involved with the IDEA and the IEP process in particular and feeling overwhelmed with the legal requirements "Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives" can bring some relief by providing much needed guidance on how to meet the needs of the students while complying with the IDEA.

"Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives,"
They've provided an excellent guide that promotes, example by example, clear thinking and communication in IEPs. The book is one of those rare birds that is both theoretically sound and practically grounded. Directors of special education should distribute copies to each and every special education teacher in their LEAs. Professors of education should require this book in their students' first course about special education and
have them refer back to it throughout their teacher education programs.

Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives
This text is designed to give deeper insight into the utility of individualized education programs (IEPs) as a more effective way to encourage learning on the part of each student than the often used group approach. The IEP approach, as highly individualized as it is stimulates learning in each student so that the group as a whole achieves a growing edge rather than a forced mass learning approach. The ingenuity of each student will not only be tapped but act as a catalyst in giving insight into personal achievement as a constant stimulant to more learning. The text is divided into three areas. These are (1) About Goals and Objectives/Benchmarks (Go/Bs) (2) Writing Goals and Objectives/Benchmarks (Go/Bs) and Sample PLOPs, Objectives, Goals. A 1997 Federal Law mandates compliance with the individuals and Disabilities Education Act(commonly called IDEA). This law gives protection to every eligible child who has a disability. It is designed to make a free, appropriate public education (FAPE) available to every child who has a disability. The child is enabled to move from the present levels of performance (PLOT) so that special education students can move at the pace of the majority. This enables the handicapped to be more self-sufficient in their life style. About half of the text is used to portray a variety of examples of how students moved from their present levels of performance to equality with the non-handicapped students and the value that this ultimately is for the total society. With the expanding population the ratio of the handicapped to the non-handicapped will grow so it is valuable to have insight into how to minimize the problem to ward off greater problems.

WASTE OF PAPER
If it were possible to rate this book with less than one star I would have done so. I purchased and read this book hoping for some insight which would help me prepare for my daughter's IEP. I wish I had spent the time reading this book organizing my closets or on some worthy endeavor as I feel that the time I spent reading was wasted. I found this book to oversimplify the necessary elements of an IEP and of the IDEA. For parents who have never been through an IEP, this will not give them much assistance. I much prefer the Wrightslaw publications, as they are much more thorough and better outline the children's rights.

Disappointed
I found this book was overrated and lumpy. I found more concise and useful information in WrightsLaw. This book talks about a non-existent world of school administrators, and impractical and misleading sunny little paragraphs about what to do, like they will actually work. The brief sojourn into methodology is glaringly misinformed, ignoring 40 years of Applied Behavioral Analysis, OT, Speech and other therapies with a dismissive paragraph about Lovaas Method vs. TEACCH. This book is long-winded other places where a tactful editor could have made it a lot easier to read and understand. The best part was the index of common phrases, the cute case examples about kids and the list of other books to read. Some of the copy came off as insulting too, like parents are slow-witted and need help in understanding everything, so speak slowly. Wished I'd spent the money on something else.

Incredible Resource!
Buying this book was one of the best things I have done in a very long time for my son with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dealing with the morons in our county school system is aggrevating under any circumstances. This time, however, I was armed with extremely valuable information. After reading it cover to cover and some sections twice, the "administrators" could not pull any punches or violate any of my son's rights. Thank you Beth Fouse for empowering me to be a better advocate for my little boy!
