about being non canon product.
Beware, since white wolf licensed ravenloft from Wizard of the Coast, this product may be considered not canon, since the time line of the Ravenloft 3.5 ed doesn't include a topic with "death of van richten", only that he has disapeared.

5 stars since it is a great adventure.

A tragic campaign...
This is a module with 3 books that guides to 3 adventures with Van Richten, the famous monster hunter of Ravenloft. But, at these adventures this great hero dies and leave the Domains of Dread (Ravenloft) with very much fear, ... fear of what they expect now from the shadows and a question: Who will now fight the darkness?

BLESS THIS HOUSE
Best advise within the pages of this small book for the newly wed. Forget the wedding card. Replace with this book.

A book full of blessings for a new home.
BLESS THIS HOUSE was given to our family for Christmas one month after we had moved into our new house. Construction of the house consisted of the usual problems and set-backs. When I read this book, it reminded me of all the reasons we built our own home with our own hands. This book makes a perfect gift for a christian family with small children who just completed construction of a new home. It only takes about 5 minutes to read but have at least 2 tissues on hand!

Bei Dao Rocks
This book is a "book of essays" like Li-Young Lee's "Winged Seed" was a "memoir."

Meaning: these guys are (brilliant) poets. What they write--it seems--no matter the intention--comes out poetry.

This book is like listening to notes carried on the wind. It's so beautiful, so intense yet gentle; it begins with remembrances of Allen Ginsberg and just

travels.

If you like Bei Dao's poetry, you'll love this book.

Excellent essays of the Chinese Diaspora
In this fine-tuned book of intimate essays, China's premier poet--only he's not in China, you see--and descendent of surrealism lets us in on some of the lyrical details of his life & times. The essays range from his friends to his love of gambling, his daughter to what he thinks about cats and dogs, always w/ an impressively lyrical sense of synecdoche: his restraint and ability not to go overboard signal to the gestalt of his--and other poets', dissidents', exiles'--life at the end of the 20th century. Expertly and subtly translated, Huters & Ming let Bei Dao's Chinese breathe in English, granting us w/ a voice that, I'm afraid, not enough people will read.

Blueprints for Modern Living: History and Legacy of the Case Study Houses
Published in Hardcover by MIT Press (January, 1990)
Authors: Esther McCoy, Elizabeth A. T. Smith, Kevin Starr, and Thomas S. Hines
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

The complete story...just brilliant.
A first class study of the background to the Case Study Houses project created by the southern Californian Arts & Architecture magazine. This book was originally published in conjunction with an exhibition of the program at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1989-1990. It has plenty of photos and plans (though some the photos are just a little too dark) to illustrate the eight main essays. Editor Elizabeth Smith and Amelia Jones devote forty-two pages to the actual houses with succinct descriptions, plans and photos. The rest of this marvellous book has a huge amount of information relating to housing and the post-war environment and how the thirty-six prototype houses had a wide influence on the domestic architecture that followed.

I particularly enjoyed the two essays by Thomas Hines and also Dolores Hayden's essay 'Model Houses for the Millions: architects' dreams, builders' boasts, residents' dilemmas'. The back of the book has six contemporary architects ideas and plans for housing in 'Extending the Case Study Concept', followed by biographies, chronology, bibliography and index.

Was the project worth it? Architectural writer Esther McCoy summed it up as... 'Perceived as a prototype that was to be enacted on a mass scale, the Case Study House program was a failure. Perceived as a prophetic statement, however, as a demonstration of trends and influences that would in one way or another achieve realization, the program must be judged a success. Perceived as art, finally, an approach suggested by their presence in The Museum of Contemporary Art, the Case Study Houses have won the right to be recognized and respected in the history of American design'.

You might think that everything about the CSH was included in this book but Elizabeth Smith has just edited another one called (you guessed it) 'Case Study Houses', a beautiful, very expensive ... very heavy (twelve pounds) very big (opens up to over thirty-two inches wide) 440 page visual history with hundreds of photos (especially from Julius Shulman) plans and drawings. What was missing from this sumptuous volume was all the information in 'Blueprints for Modern Living' so if you go for both books you really will have the COMPLETE CSH experience.

"The Search for the Postwar House"
Nuetra, Soriano, Ellwood, Koenig - Blueprints for moder living is the catalogue for a major exhibit at the LA MoCA in the late 80's. It is an excellent sourcebook for those intersted in post war residential architecture. Modern Architecture (with a capital A) was going to change the world, as these bold case-study house designs show. This book contains a great deal more than just documenting the Case Study Building Program of the 50's. There are essays by noted historians Esther McCoy, Thomas Hines and Reyner Banham and others as well. These essays provide the background for the case study program and the mood of the public (especially in Califonia) after WW2. There is also an essay on publisher Joh Estnza and the Arts and Architecture Magazine that sponsored the program. The last chapter "Extending the Case Study Concept" documents the exhibit of six new designs (1987) commisioned by the Museum for a multi family housing project. Architects include: Eric Owen Moss, Toyo Ito and Hogetts & Fung. Lastly there are bio's on the architects, a timeline of events for the program and resourcefull bibliography. As always, the Julious Shulman photographs are stunning. This is a must have for the student of Modernism.

Blumpoe the Grumpoe Meets Arnold the Cat
Published in School & Library Binding by Joy st Books (May, 1990)
Authors: Jean Davies Okimoto and Howie Schneider
Amazon base price: $13.95
Used price: $5.95
Collectible price: $10.05
"Horace P. Blumpoe was a grump. Everyone in his neighborhood thought so. They all called him Blumpoe the Grumpoe." So begins award-winning author Jean Davies Okimoto's charmingly quirky tale of a how a cat monkeys his way into the heart of an alleged curmudgeon. One November day, when Horace decides to head for Wabasha to pay his sister a visit, his car breaks down. Grumpily, he finds himself at the Anderson Hotel, a special inn with 19 resident cats, available to each guest to adopt for the length of his or her stay. Horace, of course, is not interested, and certainly not pleased; "I thought this was a hotel, not a kennel!" he shouts as he stomps off to his room. At 6:00, however, the only remaining unpicked cat (Arnold) refuses to let poor Horace go catless for a night. Arnold's delightful persistence, Horace's angry resistence, and Howie Schneider's wonderful, cartoonish illustrations will have readers laughing out loud and waiting for Horace's heart to melt along with their own. (Ages 4 to 8)

Wonderful
This book will appeal to readers who like to see grumpy people made nice, especially through the influence of cats. Those who've stayed at 19th century Anderson House Hotel in Wabasha, MN (where this book is set), and chosen an Anderson House cat to reside in their rooms for a night, will also love it. I've given several copies of Blumpoe the Grumpoe away to cat-loving children, and it's a favorite; thank goodness for the reprinting!

Terrific Book for the kids!
My whole family loves this book. It is funny and entertaining. We also love the references to towns in Minnesota. Everyone will fall in love with Blumpoe and Arnold! We are very happy that this book is back in print. We looked all over for this book (two years ago), after getting it from the library. We even contacted the author but she had no extras. Now it's back in print and everyone can buy it! Wonderful! Check out her other books, too!

All You Need to Know and More
Having read and heard so much about Art Ludwig's books on greywater recycling designs I first purchased Create an Oasis with Greywater and Branched Drain Greywater Systems hoping they would provide me with some practical assistance in establishing a system to facilitate wiser water consumption. I have since found both books to be outstanding examples of clear, conscise, yet technical descriptions of the theoretical and practical principles behind the turning of what has erroneously been deemed waste, greywater, into an asset. Descibing the pros and cons of different systems/designs and with examples of different systems currently in use, design principles, choosing and finding the best components for the design, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting as well as clear diagrams throughout Branched Greywater Systems is an invaluable resource for anyone planning a better, more logical system for water use and reuse. Branched Greywater Systems is, like all of Art Ludwig's books, a brilliant manual that shows clearly that you do not have to be an engineer, plumber or irrigation specialist to set up a complex water recycling system and that you can do so without a large financial outlay as well. Having been asked which of the books in Art Ludwig' series on greywater is the best for someone wanting a pure insight into the benefits and ease of setup of greywater recycling, without uneccessarily complicated explanation, I could say only all three.

Branched drains to the rescue!
With this book you don't have to be an architect, engineer or plumber to do a perfect installation of a "Branched Drain" greywater system. It's no exaggeration to say this new design is the "best greywater system since indoor plumbing." It is a brilliant, deceptively simple design. This manual covers adaptations for just about every conceivable context and provides step by step construction details in a fun, straightforward manner that eliminates all chance of making mistakes. Responsible technology enthusiasts will appreciate the extraordinary good design and extensive experience behind this book.

Brave New Houses doesn't disappoint
Great book with very recent houses. I had seen many of them published in the Sunday LA Times magazine, as well as other places BUT this book provides additional pictures, along with floorplans, and text. The houses represent very current styles and range from small houses to large estates.

Very much worth purchasing.

PS. the book is paper back and approximately 9" x 9" in size

Breaking out of the Box
It takes courage to leap into the unknown, but the thirty homeowners featured in this handsome new compilation picked architects who could translate their desires into something they could never have imagined by themselves. Rather than choose an off-the-shelf design, they went for something that was one-of-a-kind. That bold decision brought them lasting satisfaction.

Even if you do more than fantasize about your ideal home, you can learn something from this varied menu of houses. Each has a distinct character, but all open up to nature and conserve energy by pulling in natural light and breezes and blocking direct sun. As Michael Webb observes in his introduction, we spend too much of our lives in boxes--driving, working, and shopping--and we deserve something better to come home to. A new house, or an inventive remodel by a creative architect can revolutionize the way we live.

The thirty completed houses are located from Santa Barbara to San Diego, but most of them are in or around Los Angeles. That gives this book a coherence that is lacking from most anthologies of residential architecture, for each house relates to a similar climate and topography. As a bonus, there are five unrealized projects that show just how far you can break out of the box.

From Landscape Architecture Magazine, Vol. 90, No. 1
Brick is, Sovinski writes, "the real thing". Its applications in the landscape are seemingly endless, and the author takes us far beyond Jefferson' seprentine walls at the University of Virginia. The properties, specifications, designs, and other technical aspects of using brick are all carefully detailed. A glossary of brick terms and a list of metric standards for brick masonry are also helpful.

From Brick News, Vol. 12, No. 8
A new book on brick landscaping is out and it looks to provide useful guidance to designers. Brick in the Landscape covers applications such as walls, pavements, piers and steps all in one place. It is filled with photos and details which are sure to be useful for the designer. The book draws heavily from BIA's Technical Notes.

Brick in the Landscape discusses why to use brick in its introduction. It then proceeds to give a brief history of brick with a concise description of the manufacturing process. Brick sizes, types and shapes are described with accompanying photos. Applications of brick are well covered with pertinent information included to aid the designer. Finally, design considerations such as bond patterns, joint design and other special techniques are explained. Within each section a handy feature called "The Busy Designer's Quick Reference Guide" provides a summary of the preceding chapter.

Author, Rob Sovinski is a landscape architecture professor at Purdue University. No stranger to the masonry industry, every year he puts on the Boiler Brick Bowl. This past year he had over 50 students designing and constructing brick planters. This gets landscape architecture students learning early what brick can do.
