The Book
Published in Hardcover by Tyndale House Publishers (May, 1986)
Author: Tyndale House Publishers
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $3.95
The Book is, of course, the Bible. Rather than offering a straightforward interpretation of the original Greek and Hebrew texts, Tyndale House Publishers has assembled an easy-to-reference volume, making it accessible to newcomers as well as scholars. In the front section, readers will find a selection of excerpts that speak to life's major issues and concerns, such as "Anger," "Discouragement," "Fear," and "Loneliness." The Book also includes excerpts that speak to relationships, such as love, friends, marriage, and parenthood. An opening section titled "Where Can I Find It?" lists where to locate favorite Bible stories, including "The Prodigal Son" and "The Golden Rule." It even has a reference section devoted to "Great Chapters from the Book," citing chapters such as "A Time for Everything," and "The Holy Spirit Comes." This is one of the most highly recommended and user-friendly bibles available.

A must have for everyone, new or old to the bible.
I have just recently decided to change my life and let God run it for me. This book was the major instrument in that decision. It is so easy to read that I was engulfed in it and look forward to the next time I get to open it up again. Each book has a description of the person that wrote it and what it is about, the time it was written and what you are supposed to get from it. It is written in "today's" language so that everyone can understand it. The Bible is of course the Bible and will always be the best book ever written but "The Book" puts it into simple English. The beginning gives a short book by book order to read if you are new to the bible and also an index of proverbs and so forth for every aspect of life, Greed, sorrow, gilt, etc.

Bible reading for Generation X!
I used to force myself to read the traditional version of the Bible, but now I am excited to read "The Book" because it is written in everyday language that I can relate to. Bible reading has become fresh and exciting!

Great on Cassette
With my family's busy schedule, listening to the Bible on tape is a great way to spend some time meditating on the Word of God. I have bought other cassettes of the Bible and the narration was dry and boring. Mike Kellogg does an excellent job as the narrator, his voice and tone is pleasant and easy to listen to--and he does NOT put me to sleep. I think this the best narrated version of the New Testament I have heard yet. We listen to it in the car on our way to school and soccer and church...it is great and has been a blessing to my family.

Pick up this book and you'll soon be in comfort-food heaven.
This book is as fun to read as it is to cook from. Dragonwagon has a nice colloquial writing style and gives a lot of background on where each recipe comes from, trivia about the Ozarks and the inn she ran with her husband for many years.

Although this book does have a few pages focusing on breads and salads, the soup recipes (which make up about 75% of the book) are truly the shining stars here. The recipes are divided into chapters on chicken soups, fish soups, vegetable soups, bean soups, dairy soups, nut soups, and fruit/dessert soups. There is also a chapter devoted entirely to making the ultimate gumbo, and one on a very versatile "diet" soup. The majority of recipes fall into the vegetable/dairy/and bean soup categories - making this book quite suitable for vegetarians or people interested in cutting back on the amount of meat in their diets. She doesn't eat red meat, and you won't find any recipes that call for beef, pork, or lamb... although there are a couple of exceptions.

As other reviewers have mentioned, these recipes are all easily adaptable to what vegetables you already have in your refrigerator, though you will probably need to make regular trips to the store to stock up on fresh veggies if you intend to use this book often. The recipes call for lots of ingredients, but you can easily leave some out and still have a great tasting finished product. Many variations are given for each soup and some have ideas for using leftovers. Although she doesn't recommend it, bouillon cubes or canned stock could easily be substituted if you're short on time. However, if you ever wanted to learn how to make a great homemade stock, this is the place for it.

The recipes themselves are excellent and I have had fabulous results and many compliments when serving these soups to others. I highly recommend the Mexican-Style The Soup, Greek Navy Bean Soup, and Pea Soup Caraway Adelle. These soups are a wonderful way to save money and eat healthy while still pleasing your tastebuds.

The book has a nice design, but if you're looking for fancy photographs or art, you won't find them here.

My copy's spattered, stained, and used time & again
Soup. Bread. Muffins. Salad. Yum. This is a book full of great recipes and wonderful lore. I enjoy the quotes and anecdotes almost as much as the food, and this is great food. We enjoy the Hillbilly Many-Bean Soup, the Skillet-Sizzled Buttermilk Cornbread, the Glazed Orange Muffins, the Dairy Hollow House Pasta Salad, the Chicken & Cheese Soup with Green Chiles again and again. Some of these recipes even go with us on vacation. There are great directions for making your own soup stocks, and no, you do not have to live in your kitchen all day to do it. We keep finding interesting recipes we want to try, as well as returning to our favorites time & time again. More than a recipe book, this is a visit with a friend who loves to cook. Enjoy!

Good to the last spoonful!
Crescent Dragonwagon's Soup and Bread has kept my family fed in style (with never a complaint from the most finicky of eaters). My local supermarket is decent (but not a gourmet mecca) and I groan when I open a cookbook to find the recipes made entirely of exotic and expensive ingredients. (After all that money and effort, you might as well have gone to the author's restaurant and plonked down your plastic.) Crescent, however, can turn simple ingredients into a feast. I turn to this book when I have "nothing" in the house for dinner and don't have time for a supermarket run. It always amazes me that I can get results like this with a relatively small effort. Her stories of Dairy Hollow House give each dish an "atmosphere." Her Gumbo Zeb recipe is the best gumbo I have ever had, and this is from a girl who spent years in Louisiana drowning in many incredible bowls of it. My husband inadvertedly renamed the recipe when he was raving about the dish and I told him it was by Crescent Dragonwagon. At our house, it's called "Green Dragon" Gumbo. It's brilliant. (Make it and you'll know what I mean.)

How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 Houseplants That Purify Your Home or Office

Beautifully designed and very informative.
The book is laid out beautifully. The 50 plants are listed by rank based on removal of chemical vapors, ease of maintenance, resistance to insect infestation, and transpiration rate. Each plant gets a two-page spread; one page discusses the plant's ideal environment, sunlight conditions, care, and general information about the plant along with a full photo of it. The next page has a zoomed-in full-page photo of the leaves and/or flowers so the reader gets a feel for what the plant looks like and how it will fit with their decor.

The book begins by discussing the research about the air purification qualities of houseplants. The initial chapters explain how air contaminates enter our homes, the adverse effects these toxins have on humans, and how plants remove the contaminates from the air. I was surprised to learn that common household items such as blankets, toys, gas stoves, computers, and carpets can lead to allergies, asthma, even cancer, and that they might contribute to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Once I read how certain plants can remove these dangerous microbes from the air, my husband and I immediately discussed adding these plants to our home.

The author explains in great detail how to care for the plants, which I found very helpful as a novice indoor gardener. The author also details the specific toxins that different plants remove, and indicates whether the plants transpire at night (which is good for a bedroom) or during the day.

A beautiful book!
This book not only gives concise, quantitative data about which substances each plants removes from the air, but combines this data with other factors like ease of care and pest resistance to give one overall ranking to each plant. The introduction is fascinating, especially the part about his eco-house which uses plants to clean his water waste as well as the air. However, what I like best about the book is the gorgeous pictures. I have never seen a plant book with such large, glossy pictures of such perfect plants matched with the ideal pot. It's beautiful!

Save the world by having a few plants, that too much trouble
This book is brillian't I have bought some of the plants reccomended by this book for my nephew and his Asthma has cleared up.

Just by growing a plant you can improve the air quality in your house and also having plants teaches you patience and how to care for something.

In an age where the rainforests are being cut down at an exponential rate we can at least try and do something about it. By this book it'll improve your health, your home and your air.

Easy To Learn From
This book is put togather in a step by step way that is easy to learn from. It is full of fun ideas & tricks. Some of the pages are made that you can photo copy, and use them as stencils.

Stencilling on a Grand Scale
I love this book! It has been great for teaching me to do all kinds of things I didn't know how to do. I have been stencilling for about eight years now, and my stencils looked pretty good, but her ideas makes my stencilling look GREAT! I have many books on how to paint everything you can name in a home. You name it and I have the book on it, but this is the first book that I thought was worth the money I spent on it. I wish I had bought this book eight years ago. I now have no fear in doing a full wall mural in my living room. This book is a have to have if you are into stencilling, or if you would like to start stencilling for the first time. GET IT!

The Best For Beginners
I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...

a book that reflected my time
I grew up in China. My family had similar experiences and background as the author. I could identify myself with the characters in the book. My personal experience was very painful before and during the "Cultural Revolution". For a long time, I couldn't look back without crying hard. Thank you for telling your story.
Whenever I read a book about China, either by native Chinese or foreigners, I found certain sterotype about China, Chinese families and Chinese people. A Chinese given name consists of 1 or 2 characters. Since Chinese characters are very rich in meanings they could represent, a name could tell a lot. My name, as well as my siblings' and all my cousins were carefully chosen by my grandfather. My given name, only two characters, tells where I was born. It also represents fountain flowing at great speed, which my grandpa thought was a symbol of life. It may be true that China is a male dominated society. However there are a lot of people who don't follow the trend. I was the third girl in the family. My parents were just as happy if not happier about my birth as compared if I were a boy. As a matter of fact, in the environment I grew up, there was no difference what so ever about boys or girls whom the parents preferred. Many families actually preferred girls to boys as Chinese people all believe when children grow up, girls are more considerate to their parents (this is another sterotype, but many believe it). I guess, after all, it is the parents, not the society decide if boys are preferred to girls. Families are different in China, just like they are different in the States.
BTW, My late father was a surgeon. My beloved mother had been a teacher before she decided to quit her job to be a full time mom.

Thirty Years In A Red House
A wonderful account of life and childhood during the Cultural Revolution. As a college student interested in Chinese history and culture, I have been reading every Chinese memoir I could get my hands on over the past few years. In fact, I am often times more interested in the books these books I'm reading on my own than those assigned to me for class. "Thirty Years in a Red House" was one of the best Chinese memoirs I have read thus far. It was also the first Chinese memoir I have read written by a male author. The way Zhu told his story, of his father, family, and the struggles of everyday life drew me in like few books have. Every time I read someones personal account of the Cultural Revolution, I become even more fascinated and intrigued with how so many people held together over such a difficult time. The "seen through your eyes" style Thirty Years In A Red House was written in enables the reader to view Zhu's childhood and journey through Mao's China as if he or she were following his every step. I also enjoyed how historical and political events were artfully woven into the text. A great read!

Book greatly enhanced understanding of Chinese politics
Having spent two weeks in Beijing preceding and during President Clinton's state visit to China, I returned to the United States with many questions. I was curious to learn more about the Communist government, China's history, its culture, and especially, the conditions under which the Chinese people have lived in the period since Mao Zedong founded the People's Republic of China. In my quest for knowledge and understanding I came to read Zhu's _Thirty Years in a Red House_. This book offers the reader remarkable insight into the hardships and heartaches of a Chinese family during the years of the Cultural Revolution. While I had been dismayed at other accounts of the injustices dealt to the educated and intellectual citizens and leaders of this time, I was greatly heartened by Zhu's account of his parents' beliefs and practices in spite of the hardships they endured. This book gives one hope that the people of China will one day prevail, and that their leaders, both present and future, will learn from the sacrifices of those who went before.

The Bat House Builder's Handbook

Going Batty? Here's Your Book.
This is an excellent source of information on bats as well as their abodes. The book contains the results of years of research on size, color and placement of bathouses. Builders are even invited to participate in ongoing bat research through membership in Bat Conservation International (application card included). There is lots of information on the importance of bats in the environment; their almost insatiable appetite for harmful insects. There is also information on identifying the species of North American bats you may host, including B&W Pictures.

There are detailed plans giving the size and spacing of roosting boards, openings and ventilation of your houses. He gives a source for the netting that you need to cover the roosts with, but I am using the mesh bags from onions as a substitute. I was able to find some dark colored ones that will be appropriate.

My wife is looking forward to collecting guano (poopoo) from under the houses - bat guano is an excellent source of free fertilizer for your porch plants.

Review of Bat House Builder's Handbook
I thought the book was very well done. Simple and too the point with out being to technical or full of overwhelming detail. It had schematics for a couple of bat houses that were optimized between the bats needs and the builders pocket book. Great book for the beginner bat house builder.

great tool for any bathouse builder
This is a very concise and thorough book on how to construct a successful bat house.

A Wealth of Information
This book is wonderful because it has a number of faux techniques that any polymer clay artist will find useful. I enjoy looking at other people's creations and always wonder..."How did they do that?" Irene Semanchuk Dean tell you how in a simple, easy to use format. She also organizes the techniques well. Natural looking material are organized together, metal effects are in another chapter, and so on. The instructions are well written and easy to follow.

I also appreciate that this book is not just highlighting one artist's work. Irene pulls several artists together to present a well rounded, informative reference. She brought the experts together to present the best product available. This is a book you will return to again and again. It will become a staple in any polymer clay artist's library.

Best polymer clay book I've found!!
This book offers faux "recipes" and then an example project for each. The instructions are very clear and easy-to-follow, even for an absolute beginner (such as myself!). I've bought most of the polymer clay books out there and while many offer interesting projects, this one gives you the tools to create a special faux effect which you can then apply to any project you can imagine or combine then with other effects. You can really let your imagination soar with these recipes!

All the artists who contributed to this book are very talented! Thanks to Irene for gathering all this amazing information in one place.

Delightfully Surprised!
I now have quite a collection of Polymer Clay books that I have aquired over the years. I decided on a whim to purchase this one hoping to learn a few new tricks to add to my repetoire. I won't list all the surfaces one learns to imitate in this book...previous reviewers have already done this. What I will say is that I am very pleased with this purchase. The photos are clear and easy to understand. Each technique is explained fairly well. What I like most of all is that for each surface/stone/substance that is taught, an example project describing how to utilize your newly made substance is included. For example, the malachite section shows how to make a make-up compact and powder brush cover. It offers a launchpad from which to create your own ideas.

Summary:
If you are brand new to polymer clay, I still recommend The New Clay by Nan Roche. A better book or more bang for the buck does not exist...trust me, I've looked! If you're somewhat experienced and are looking to broaden your polymer clay horizons, this is a great place to start.

misinformation
Edward Winslow was the first Winslow to come over on the Mayflower. The Winslows had many children, but looking at our family Bible and records...no Gilbert. Also, the Winslows in our family line (directly from Edward)became Quakers and settled in the South (NC). However, the book sounds interesting, but the names could be more accurate.

Perfect book
This book is a must read for any Christian that has an interest in historical fiction. My father bought me this book for my birthday along with the other four in the book 1-5 boxed set. I loved it right away. It had adventure, romance, nail-biting, tear-jerking plot twists, and completely accurate historical events tied into the story lines. I got hooked on this book and the Gilbert Morris House of Winslow Series. Before long I had read 22 and am going to buy the 23rd. I only wish there were more in the series. I recommend this book and other historic fiction Gilbert Morris books very strongly.

This is a great book...
This is a remarkable story. It is full of history and I learned a lot about the ways of life of the puritans from reading it. You will meet the characters you find in your history books in a way you never knew them before! I read it very quickly because the characters were so well developed and the plot exciting. The romance was wonderful, but this isn't a romance novel so it wasn't overdone. This is the first book in the House of Winslow series and it tells the story of young gilbert winslow who takes on a job as a spy to turn in one of the leading puritan pastors. It follows his journey on the Mayflower and the lives of the settlers. This story is captivating, simply put. Will Gilbert be able to turn in the innocent man even after he has come to love the Puritans? Will he go back and Marry Cecily and forget all about dear Humility? Everyone should read this book.

The best book by Alan Alexander Milne.By :ALBERTO RENGIFO
The book I just read is the best! When I read a Pooh book it was awesome! Really, first I though it would be a babyish book, but it's not. My favourite chracter is Pooh. He is always thinking of hunny, and funny po ems and songs. I also like the words that A.A.MILNE invented I though those words came from another planet. I hope to read all of A.A.milne's books soon. If you don't read it you don't know what you are missing. I have only read The House At Pooh Corner and, I am now reading Winnie-The-Pooh.

The Pooh Review by Rafael Velasquez
The house at Pooh Corner is a really good book everyone should read it .I read it for a class project I thuoght it would be a baby book but it wasn't. It was really funny, and it had strange words.I didn't know that pooh liked condesed milk, or that tigger lived with kanga and roo. I wish A.A.Milne had written more books about pooh the books he wrote about pooh were really funny. I wonder what would have happened if A.A.M. had written more pooh books maybe even a pooh movie. The books were really funny and I love how A.A.M. writes. Pooh makes the best poems i've heard. My personal favorite character is Tigger his attitude is kind of like mine. I woud reccomend this book a lot because it's really funny and the way A.A.M. gives live to the characters is really cool nothing like the disney one wich is almost boring

What richness, what grandeur is so easily captured? :)
This classic is listed under the age group of four to eight, and as a Poohphile I am quite appalled that it is. Winnie the Pooh books have such wit, wisdom, and humor that gets better every time I read them. Their not just for children, they are for everyone. Over the years, Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo have become some of my dearest chums. I once heard someone say, or perhaps I read it, that "books are like dear friends, and who has too many friends?" I am quite inclined to agree with that statement. This book is a dear friend of mine and I hope that you shall make it yours. :)

Im a fifth grader. This was a very good book. The best thing about this book is when the monkey started throwing big fruits at Annie and Jack who were stranded in a canoe on the Amazon River. It was humorous to imagin this. One thing I did not like is how the author had keept describing how often they saw green when they first climed out of the tree house. I would recommend this book to is a first grader through fifth grade because its easy to read. Have a fast fun adventure.

I love afternoon on the Amazon
This book is a great book! Annie and Jack think things are different than they really are in the Amazon. There was a monkey that threw red fruits at them and Annie and Jack didn't know that that was what they needed. They thought the monkey was being mean.

It was very good!
The book was exciting and fun to read [I read it over lunch at Tatnuck Booksellers].
Jack and Annie travel to lots of cool places but this was the best because of all of the bugs. Jack and Annie are very lucky to have found the magic tree house.
This is the tenth Magic Tree House book I have read and I can hardly wait to read the next one.
