This book was the first that I picked up when I started building my own furniture. The projects turned out great and the finishing process that he recommended was excellent. The diagrams and step by step instruction give you all the information that you need to complete each project even if you're an amateur like I am (you do need to have/buy some good power tools though). I've made two of the projects he describes and there are still a couple more I'd like to do.

This is a good A&C furniture book for the intermediate woodworker. The authors cover pieces from the simple (wastebasket) to the more difficult (entry bench, sideboard). A nice touch is that besides covering the usual Gustav Stickley pieces there are items by other A&C companies of the time (Shop of the Crafters, Limbert, Greene & Greene [actually architects, but they designed the furniture for their buildings], L & J.G. Stickley, Roycroft). The introductory chapter covers a brief history of the style, next is an introduction to some of the general woodworking techniques needed, and then the various projects with good photographs and explanations (there are a couple of minor editorial glitches, but they cause no real problems). The projects also vary from a duplicate of the original to slightly modified interpretations. A useful technique is given for staining/glazing the furniture to achieve the traditional golden brown color without actually having to fume the pieces in concentrated ammonia (a smelly, dangerous, and potentially lethal approach). So if you are a somewhat experienced beginning woodworker, you should find some great projects here to move you on to the next level. And even if you are a very experienced furniture maker, you will find some nice pieces you might want to make too.

I teach 3 to 6 year old children, and they (and I) love this book. We had several children in class expecting siblings or with siblings newly arrived when I brought in this book. The book describes preparing for the baby, including mom's shrinking, sometimes even kicking, lap, and all the furniture and clothes the new baby will get. It talks about twins, much to the delight of my student expecting two sisters. The baby's homecoming, routines, noise and initial immobility are all discussed. There are several very touching passages, especially the one about maybe being able to hold the baby. This passage evokes peace and stillness, suggesting that you may even feel the baby breathe as you sit with her.

My students were captivated by the stunning photographs and the narrative, by turns touching, funny, and serious. Reading this book caused may of them to share true stories about their own lives and interactions with siblings. Even the younger children thought about first memories with siblings now a year or two old. The photos also show children of many different ethnicities.

This was a great tool for stimulating conversation with the children and was a big hit in the book corner. I enjoyed the upbeat message of this book as well. Even though routines change and diapers are smelly, parents still love you. Even though your baby might seem a little boring at first, the big sisters and brothers will get to teach this little one what they know. I thought it very positive for the children, stressing their competency and the importance of their role as a member of the family raising a baby.

I would recommend this book strongly for any classroom or expectant parents. Or any child aware and interested in babies. (One of my children who loved this book is a little sister, but talked about her baby cousins!)

I looked at alot of books to do my babys room and all looked to hard to do. I would have to hire someone. but can't afford that. But when I saw this book, what I liked was stuff I could do myself. I can,t decide which room to do yet cuz they are all so cute. It will be alot of fun.

i absolutely loved this book. my daughter is having her first baby and she and i have gotten so many ideas from this book. i love the way it is broken up into themes. the tips are great, the photos are great and very inspiring.it was one of the most comprehensive books on the subject that i've seen. i can't wait to put some of these ideas into practice. jeri clement

This study of vernacular architecture is a great contribution to the social history of slavery. By looking at facets of design such as settlement patterns and the formal qualities of buildings, Vlach shows how patterns in material culture provide clues for understanding the patterns of history that one can read by examining the buildings. This remarkable book not only documents plantation architecture as an important contribution to the historical record, but it also provides a fascinating interpretation of the subject. It is an especially important study because of the dearth of written documents left by slaves.

John Vlach's book is a thorough study of the architecture of plantation slavery in the South. He primarily used resource materials from the 1930s Historic American Building Survey and WPA interviews with former slaves to develop a social history. The research is solid and comprehensive. Vlach demonstrates ways to interpret the buildings for information about the life of the people who worked and dwelled in them, and he backs up his conclusions with interview materials. It's a terrific way of studying architecture that merges folklife studies with architectural history. The conclusions expanded my understanding about history, and this book is an essential contribution to learning about black history.

ALL CHILDREN WOULD ENJOY READING THE BIBLE IF THEY KNEW OR HAD A CLUE OF SOMETHING TO LOOK FOR. WELL THIS BOOK DOES THAT. IT ALSO TELLS THEM WHY THAT CERTAIN BOOK WAS WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE, TELLS THEM WHAT TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHILE READING THROUGH THE BIBLE, OLD & NEW TESTAMENT. I THINK THEOLD TESTAMENT GETS A LITTLE BORING FOR OUR YOUNG ONE, THIS BOOK WILL HELP THEM, BECAUSE OF WHAT I SAID ABOVE. I
COULDN'T PUT ITDOWN MYSELF WHEN IT CAME, & I AM FAR FROM THE AGE OF A CHILD. I DO HOWEVER: WISH I HAD THIS WHEN I TAUGHT SUNDAY SCHOOL YEARS AGO. ... IT IS A VERY GOOD HELP BOOK!

A WONDERFUL BOOK, I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN AND I AM FAR FROM THE AGE OF A KID. THIS BOOK WOULD BE PERFECT HELPING OUR YOUNG ONE UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE. IT GOES THROUGH EACH BOOK, TELLS WHAT TO WATCH FOR, WHAT THE PURPOSE OF EACH BOOK OF THE BIBLE WAS WRITTEN' FOR, POINTS OUT THE IMPORTANCE OF EACH PERSON. IT IS JUST THE BEST BOOK YOU COULD GET FOR OUR YOUNG ONES.I WISH I HAD THIS WHEN I TAUGHT SUNDAY SCHOOL. IT IS VERY WELL PUT TOGETHER& WILL MAKE READING THE BIBLE MORE INTERESTING, I THINK IT WILL KEEP A CHILD INTERESTED TO READ MORE & MORE, BECAUSE IT ENCOURAGES THEM TO LOOK FOR CERTAIN THINGS. This book was great. It's concise, and provides very useful information for Barbie doll collectors. Excellent book to read especially if you're new to Barbie doll collecting.

This is an excellent book with tons of pictures and drawings. I am the inhouse repairman for an apartment building and this is an excellent reference manual... Should make my job much easier. Highly recomend this book.

This book is an excellent instructional book for a novice/starting plumber like me, an IT/electronics person. With the excellent fundamentals, the nice and colorful drawings and the detailed step-by-step instructions, I was able to replace a p-trap, a tail piece and a strainer of a kitchen sink on my own. I attribute this first-ever accomplishment of mine to this book. The book is so simple, so informative, even a 12-year-old can do the job after a few minutes of reading. Highly recommended for aspiring plumbers. How's that for cost-saving from expensive plumbers and boosting your self-actualization and learning a new skill ?

Kathy Wood has shown us the way to turn "trash" into "treasure". This is the only how-to book you need if you are interested in skipping the technical jargon, while easily making some extra cash! Who knew shopping could be a profitable part-time job? Thanks Kathy for a great book!
