Appreciating the timeless architecture of Portsmouth, NH
This is a reprint of a book originally published in the 1930s, which describes with great sophistication the architecture of the many 18th century homes that dot the Piscataqua River valley, primarily in Portsmouth. At the time it was written, many of these homes were still occupied by descendants of the original owners, whereas now they are owned by non-profit organizations and are open to the public. It is enormously rewarding to compare the black and white pictures in the book with the houses as they are today. It also contains an introductory essay that gives a superb explanation of the evolution of domestic architecture from America's earliest settlements through the 18th century. As the book explains, Portsmouth, along with Newburyport, Annapolis, and Charleston, are unique among historic American cities because they prospered in the 18th century only to decline thereafter, thereby allowing their wonderful examples of Georgian and Federal/Adam architecture to be preserved. By way of contrast, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia grew so rapidly in the 19th century that most of their examples of this type of home were lost to the wrecker's ball.

Art and Science of Feng Shui
Excellent book to use before you build a house! Deeply explores ancient principles of Feng Shui and how it relates to the geography around your residence. Not for the casual Feng Shui practitioner. Find out the best area to build your home, the best room layout, and the best site to locate a business. Essential guide for anyone who needs to improve his or her life or business

A great book
This is a fantastic book! It brings out the true story of feng shui the first time in English. Now I realize that true feng shui involves much more than furniture arrangement and mirror placing and what you have, and that why so many people have failed to benefit from feng shui when they assume that they understand feng shui. At best, they just see the surface of feng shui, while the truth story of feng shui is hidden in this book.

An Art Deco Collector's MUST HAVE!
Mr. Linz honors the Machine Age of Chrome and Bakelite! All the major 'players' are carefully given a great backgound and history in a chapter devoted to the companies themselves, then on to the good stuff! Devoting his written information to 'just the facts', Mr. Linz provides a very large wealth of information in a minimum amount of space. He consistently focuses on the items he is presenting, and with the color and B/W pictures provides a large and impressive array of the 'Age'. This book provided me with data I had not seen or heard of before, and as I consider myself a 'serious' and 'advanced' collector of some of these items, it is a VERY helpful resource. Thank you, Mr. Linz!

One of the best books on the subject.
This is a very well done book. The pictures are very good and the text well written. Jim Linz has apparently done his homework because there is much important information to be found here. There are catalog reprints and great background information on both the major companies and the designers involved. Highly recommended.

Art Glass Details : Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House
Published in Plastic Comb by Prairie Designs of California (10 April, 2000)
Author: Dennis Casey
Amazon base price: $19.50
Average review score:

Hollyhocks are summer flowers, but of lasting memory...
just as Frank Lloyd Wright reflected on the environment in every situation, it was as though he were consulting a calendar, very much the Feng Shui master of homes and high-rises, and in the case of this home he uses two old concepts to great effect, making the situation one of effortless variabilty, or timeless change as we'd call it today. The only comparison I wuold make here is in the area of travel memoirs; compare Dennis Casey's aestethic views with Carleton Beals "Glass House", an auot-biographical imprint that visits Mexico, Spain, and Italy, etc.
and you get the general idea. There used to be a proverbial saying for Architecture students at Universities; accredited to 'Old Frosty' (whether correctly, we've yet to ascertain) "There is a 'WRIGHT' way... and then there is the 'Other Guys' way!" But by any yardstick-this book is great!

Casey nails down Hollyhock widows
I've been buying FLLW glass patterns from Dennis Casey for years. I own all his other books and this is his best yet! For those who follow Wright's designs and his display of truth through art, accuracy and explanation are very important. Dennis Casey was allowed to take his micrometer into the Hollyhock house. Reading this book is like walking through the house. Each step is beautifully detailed: "...with surrounding glass, is exciting in the true since of the word. It is as if you walked into a room with a full symphony orchestra playing."

Three quarters of the book is detailed drawings, which will satisfy even the most picayune artisan among us. I'll continue to stare at these pages until I understand.

The origins of the Arts and Crafts movement
These are three of the major works of the Arts and Crafts Movement beginning with the fabulous Red House which brought together many of William Morris' ideas in shaping this movement. Philip Webb worked with Morris to create this resplendent design, inspired by the earlier neo-Gothic movement, but pointing the direction to a new architecture. There are many fine color photos as well as key details of the house that give you a very good impression of this seminal work in the English Freestyle.

Lethaby and Lutyens carried the movement forward. They, along with C.F.A. Voysey, were the leading figures in the Arts and Crafts Movement, and shown here are their key works. The Melsetter House is a tour-de-force, stripped of most of the Neo-Gothic trappings, this house offers a more refined version of the English Manor House of the late 19th century. The site plan shows the beautiful configuration that Lethaby came up with to anchor the house on the large site with its radiating gardens. There are many beautifully detailed drawings, including molding profiles of the enormous fireplaces, which graced this mansion. But probably the most evocative photos and drawings are those of the chapel which was an extension of the main house.

Lutyens was a very eclectic architect, drawing on many classical themes as well as Neo-Gothic themes. Goddards represents a closer adherance to the Arts and Crafts Style, but in the introduction the author gives the reader a wide sampling of Lutyens' style. Goddards has elements of timber architecture and is more earthy in its appearance. The skewed wings open up the courtyard to the countryside beyond, and Lutyen's richly detailed chimneys rise as strong tower elements in the otherwise horizontal house. Lots of wonderful sections and detail drawings to give the reader a full impression of this manor house.

A Steal at Twice the Price!
This book, like Arts and Crafts Houses II, covers only three houses, in this case William Morris's Red House (designed by Phillip Webb), William Richard Lethaby's Melsetter House, and Sir Edward Luteyns' Goddards, but it covers them beautifully and thoroughly. There are site plans, floor plans, elevations, beautiful black and white photos and stunning color photos, significant introductory essays, and lists of references. This is a beautiful book at an amazing price.

Controlling mice, termites, bed bugs & more
Environmentally safe, effective ways of controlling mice, termites, bed bugs and other common household insects and creatures are revealed in Ask The Bugman!, a guide which uses a question and answer format to impart the basics, and a chapter organization by type of pest ("Biters and Stingers", "Ants") make answers quick to find. An excellent, basic guide to pest control options.

Best book of its kind available
This is an excellent book on how to control pests without using toxic chemicals or pest control companies. It is full of great ideas and excellent drawings. It is also entertaining when people, especially the school children, list their least favorite bugs. There is even a great short piece on hemp which makes the book a little controversial. Informative, entertaining and controversial equals very interesting. It is worth every penny...

The Astronomer's House
Part mystery, part history, part sophisticated whimsy. A large and unusual cast of ghosts makes use of a rich trove of real locations in the old whaling village of Sag Harbor, NY. They must band together to save its historic, architecturally enchanting and sometimes eerie houses and other buildings. Each story adds new characters and village history while it reveals another element of the main mystery, which is resolved at the end of the final story. The style is delightful, elegant, lightly tongue-in-cheek by an author who brings to his knowledge and love of an old village a lively and refreshing imagination. A good read!

Delightful & chilling
This is one of the most enjoyable collection of short stories I've ever read. Schaffner has captured the essence of the Hamptons as only a longtime resident is capable. From the area's ornery country small town personality, to the glitterati of the Hollywood crowd, and the maddening seasonal tourist invasions, he gets it all. More important is the creativity he brings to these supernatural tales. For they resonate with both the good-natured sense of humor of the artist and mystic reporting familiar territory, and that wierd and mysterious sense of evil that only the Devil embodies. The description of the practical challenges of being a functioning ghost in an increasingly suburbanized environment will make the reader imagine Schaffner secreting himself and his notebook as an otherwordly eavesdropper. The sheer inventiveness of the plot lines are another joy. Nothing hackneyed here. Anyone who enjoys reading, who loves to smile, who can feel that cold sense of fear rushing up the spine as the imagination fills in the gaps left by the author's hints, will love this book. Highly recommended!

Love it!
My 18-month old loves this book. The activities and characters are familiar to our daily lives and she loves "discussing" each page's event. While she has never seen Sesame Street on TV, she loves the characters anyway.

Great Book for a Baby!
My 12-month-old son loves to be read this book. It's one of those books that's easy to make interesting: "Cookie glides down the slide" , "Ernie swings high," "Bert swings low" . Very simple pictures and words, suitable for a baby or young toddler.
