Ideas abound for the novice decorator. If landscape design is more your style, this book will also energize your outdoor spirits!! The vivid color and simple elegance make the book a "must have" for any library, especially those chocked full of information on the southwest.

Especially for architecture buffs

Used price: $6.00

Nan Jeffrey's classic guide to adventure travel is not to be missed by any family interested in--or even curious about--traveling off the beaten path. Jeffrey, who has traveled with twin boys and a baby, covers every possible aspect of adventure travel: hiking, biking, sailing, canoeing, and basic world roaming. You'll get down-and-dirty tips (ways to calculate how many diapers to take to a tropical island--and how to wash them), good preparation advice (learn to live in small places, study another language, take practice hikes, turn off the television), and suggestions for great family destinations. No, Jeffrey doesn't mean Club Med or Disneyland--she suggests instead Nepal, the Alps, Alaska, Guatemala, or Turkey. Adventuring with Children is not only fascinating and informative, as its subtitle promises, it's inspirational as well. Whether you're off to Bali, Chile, or Morocco, you can now be sure to have a bon voyage! --Ericka Lutz

Inspirational and also very practical
I still haven't had a chance to use the tips from this book, since our trip to Greece with our one-year-old is planned for a few months from now. I can say that reading so many real-life, much more complicated examples of Ms. Jeffrey's family's own travels have made planning a few weeks in Greece seem like no big deal, though.

I was also pleasantly surprised to read so much about the things her children learned through travel at different ages, as well as through the homeschooling done on the road. (Ms. Jeffries also provides very useful homeschooling references.) Our daughter is much too young for a lot of this, but I found it all inspirational. It's amazing how much more children can learn from travel, plus reading, rather than from reading alone.

I started reading just to find the basics of how to travel with a child (what to take, how to keep entertained, etc.), but ended knowing so much about how traveling with a child will actually be more beneficial to the whole family than I ever imagined.

World class book for world class adventures...with children
There are many travel books on the market, and there are many travel books for those who have children. This books stands out because the author actually took her kids on wonderful, real "adventures," not just tame camping trips in the U.S. She and her husband traveled to remote places (Morocco, Spain, Bali, Nepal, New Zealand...), kids in tow, and share the experience with us through text and photos. They sailed, biked, hiked, and drove about, and lived for several weeks in different countries.

While most books of this sort will list things to bring along, the author gives us real explanations for each of the things she brings--and she doesn't bring much--and tells us how to make do with less. Invaluable are her personal stories of medical needs, literary needs (her boys brought a few books and exchanged books with other travelers), laundry and social needs. There is even a terrific discussion of diapering while traveling!

Perhaps my favorite section, as a homeschooling mom, is her chapter on education while on the road. The author truly sees the educational value of travel. No doubt her boys were very well educated by their many adventures. They learned foreign languages and the differences between many cultures. Thinking of adventuring?Buy it, and you'll want to try it!

My Grandfather's Namesake
Eugene V. Debs is the only prisoner who ever ran for president of the U.S.!!
He got about a million votes too! He was convicted by the U.S. government under the espionage act and sentenced to 10 years.

The title is very telling and I interpret as being a fulfillment of scripture even if Mr. Stone didn't intend it to be. Read Daniel Chapter 2, especially verses 40-45. Daniel is able to interpret a dream by Nebuchadnezzar which no one else could do. Read verse 43 especially. Many peoples would intermix through marriage. Marriage is a great medium through which one can prey upon their enemies. Yes, I wished Debs would have married Gloria, his childhood sweetheart.

I've read several of Irving Stone's books and loved every one of them. He, like Michener, will not only tell a good story but will educate you in the process. Both authors go to GREAT lengths to research their subjects. At times, their books can be tiresome, at least to me, because of so much information that is unfamiliar. But I am a slow reader who will not skim past the details.

The book is dear to my heart because both my paternal grandfather and greatgrandfather were railroad engineers. My grandfather was born in 1894 and given the name Charles Debs Lumm. Most railroaders absolutely loved Eugene V. Debs. He was a tireless worker, defender of worker's rights. He helped establish the 8 hour work day and managed to organize the railroad workers so that they would no longer be subject to the railroad companies' whims. Many engineers and firemen were disabled for life or tragically killed in train wrecks in the early days of rail. The cost, financially, for the families so affected, so many, many times, would utterly impoverish them. Debs laid the groundwork for unions and insurance practices from those circumstances. However, I'm not so sure he would approve of the current state of those businesses today.

Debs' socialism was probably not the same as the socialism of today. At the turn of the century, there were populist/socialist movements all over the world.

Railroad, for good or ill, transformed American society. This book is a good one to read about a significant man who lived during an interesting chapter of railroad history, who may have composed most of that small chapter himself.

BRILLIANT
Though the first few chapters took some time..the rest of the book was really AMAZING. I have read a lot of books by the same author but have found this one to be one of his best. While reading the book, i did wish that Mr Debbs would distance himself from Socialism - which he finally came to believe in- but then towards the end, it was clear that it was a different kind of socialism that he was interested in. Also, i wish he had married Gloria instead of Kate; that way, both Kate and Eugene would have had happier private lives. It was also heartening to see Gloria stand up for Eugene through his ordeals- when his wife refused to oblige. All this makes for an interesting read, especially since history is fused so well with his private life. I would strongly recommend this book to those interested in reading real good stuff; the other attraction being its reality.

A book you can't put down.
I started reading this book last night at 8:15pm and couldn't put it down until I finished it at 4:20 this morning. I am bleary-eyed but absolutely happy that I found this gem in a bookstore in South Africa last week. It is an absolutley capitvating book and very well researched. Ms Lamb has a fascinating way of writing...you can almost see the wild animals, smell the scents, enjoy the beauty....in short, this book will mersmerize you. I was born in post-colonial Zambia and lived there for a while, that was the reason I bought the book, but I can assure you even if you haven't been out of your hometown (wherever that may be), you will love this book!!

most enjoyable book
For all who are interested in africa of around 1900-1950 this is a great book. I have read quite a lot of books on the subject and this one is absolutely in my top 5.

I recommend it 100%. Well written, the story is a true one and so incredible that one just cannot put it aside.

African Violets
Published in Paperback by David & Charles (April, 1992)
Author: Tony Clements
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $18.54
Average review score:

Excellent book with much information for the novice!
Tony Clements' "African Violets" book is an excellent, one-stop reference with a wealth of information.

Being new to the hobby, I found this guide amazingly useful. It features seven main sections, beginning with the history of African Violets (very interesting) and continuing through the basic topics of plant care and propagation. It includes sections on basic care, pests and diseases, propagation by seed or leaf, and discussions on displaying African Violets.

Most useful, however, is the seventh section entitled "Your Questions Answered" which features a handy and easy-to-use reference of common questions and answers. These are separated by category headers (e.g. "Pots And Repotting", "Temperature, Humidity, And Water", etc) and contain a shortened, easily accessible version of the information found within the first six sections of the book.

The book also includes a "List of Popular Named Varieties" and a "Suppliers and Useful Addresses" list. Neither is overly informative (the suppliers list contains only six references, three for the United Kingdom and three for the United States), however both are nice touches.

As a new participant in the African Violet keeping hobby, I found this book to be an excellent source of information. For those more experienced in this hobby, "African Violets" is still a great reference, and an easy, informative read.

great reading-I'm trying their technique of hybridising-
Very interesting book.I've already had success with stem propogation. This book explains how to cross pollenate two different colored violets.I just cross pollenated a single white flowered violet with a double pink flowered violet. I won't find out if it's a success for at least a year but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a bi-color double bloom. We'll see.

Publisher's full review
In his new book, After The White House - American Presidents in Retirement, Jim Feldman, as he did in his Shape of the Nation - Why the States are Shaped Like That, again shines a clear bright light into a neglected shadow of American History. After the White House addresses the question of what becomes of the ambitious and powerful men who become president of the United States after they are forced to retire. Using excellent research and a strong voice, Feldman sets up the personality and accomplishments of each man, then shows what happen to the remainder of their lives after withdrawing from the most powerful position on earth. For the presidents who died in office, the book discusses the effects of their premature deaths. After the White House, the first compilation of president's retirements, is a concise lucid read for anyone interested in the presidency or U.S. history in general.

an intriguing glimpse into the careers of 41 ex-presidents
In his third book, After The White House: US Presidents in Retirement, Jim Feldman explores the often ignored period which inevitably awaits those elected to the most public of offices. With an unfailing eye for the quirky details that help paint each president as a real person rather than simply an encyclopedic entry, Feldman gives us an intriguing glimpse into the careers of 41 ex-presidents.

While the title implies research limited to post-presidency, this 164 page paperback is broad in its scope, giving the reader a rich historical context for each president. What did each Commander and Chief expect of office at the beginning of the journey? What political enemies, wrangles, civil wars or economic factors did each president have to work against while in the White House? During the exploration of each president's path from private life to public, and return to private again (if they were lucky), Feldman reveals both the humor and self-doubt rarely documented in other history books.

George Washington, for example, was chronically hesitant about his position as the ultimate purveyor of precedent, and desperately sought the life of a gentleman farmer after his two terms. Other presidents were less modest and more cantankerous. During his term following Washington, John Adams, self-described as "obnoxious, suspected and unpopular," was furtively referred to by his associates as "his rotundity." After the White House is peppered throughout with wonderful side notes like these, making the subject matter refreshing and readable.

This is an excellent book for both the novice and history buff, and would find a home equally comfortable in the classroom and on the living room bookshelf. Jim Feldman is an experienced researcher with an engaging voice. I look forward to reading his next endeavor.

A Classic!
I also do own a lot of books on interior design, and when it comes to looking in to the opulent french style, this is a book to own. Even if you are not going to do a room like the ones he does (which I suppose is extremely rare) his ways which objects, placement of furniture, various kind of traditional pieces, combination of textures and colors will give very good direction for working with this kind of inspiration, rather than the usual more country/cotteny feel so often done by others. His illustrations are very detailed, leaves you wondering if they were done before (as a service to his clients) or after the room was finished. (For himself, I suppose). A book to own.

An Exquisite Book
I have an extraordinarily large library of books on interior design books and this one equals or surpasses the very best. The number and quality of the photos are without parallel. The book represents the very best in haute European design. Pinto's work now is rivaled only by Peter Marino's, others of this genre having died. The average homemaker looking for ideas to freshen up the family room will not find them here. But for anyone interested in seeing what perfection of detail looks like -- in upholstery, curtains, garniture, and the like -- every page of this book will show them. It is worth every penny of the price and should be in every interior designer's collection, if only to inform them and their clients of what superior upholstery design and lush color can do for a room.
