Shaker Furniture Making "Barney-Style"
This book is fantastic. Detailed pictures, lists of required tools and woods, and step-by-step instructions help you create great-looking Shaker furniture. I used this book to create a Shaker blanket chest, which was my second "large" woodworking project. The quality of results surpassed my expectations. This book is a must for the beginning woodworker who wants to produce quality items while at the same time learning or re-learning basic techniques.

Just like having Norm there with you!
Perhaps I'm biased, I think Norm is to woodworking what Carl Sagan was to science. The projects are described in detail with Norm's hand on your shoulder. Complete and well detailed with out wasting time. I recommend this book and the rest of Norm's books highly.

very good;excellent instruction; furniture clean
I bought one of Norm Abram's book on outdoor furniture. I built the adirondack chairs, and then the garden bench. I learned alot, they turned out very well, and I subsequently bought all his other manuals. I wish he'd do some more. His plans and choices of projects are the best among the current title offered.

Anthopology for Children
I am a senior in college, and an elementary education major with a minor in anthropology- when I found this book, I was estatic. Its beautiful photography is greatly complimented with Maya Angelou's flowing words. Humor, color, and the similarities with the Ndebele girl (Thandi, which means hope) are sure to attract children. They will learn that even though Thandi is across the world, all children share many similaries- a lesson that should be remembered, especially in modern times. I will definately use this in my classroom someday. Never have I seen such a great childrens book that is infused with anthropology and the study of a culture!

Shows the pure heart of a child
I bought this book today and read it with my 10 year old niece. It has exceptionally beautiful photographs of the Ndebele people. It is a story that reminds us that the simple things in life are the most precious. Thandi tells the story of her people and family and her best friend, a chicken. She is a proud and pure hearted child that shares the culture of the Ndebele people with us. This is a lovely story that is a fun, educational, easy to read one that made me feel young at heart again. I'll be needing an additional copy to share with my grandaughter.

Outstanding children's story!
As a reading tutor, I have enjoyed sharing this book with my 4th grade students. It examins the differences of people, our different cultures, and is a colorful and enchanting story. My kids, both boys and girls are facinated by this book, and we always continue a dialogue with it. The recognize the author, as one their parents respect, and enjoy talking about it and laughing about the silly chicken. We have talked about trying to paint houses with a chicken feather, and may jsut try to do this during black history month! I adore this book!

A Pleasant Pastiche
Nigel Bruce's Watson is a loveable bumbler--quite a contrast to Conan Doyle's capable but unimaginative Watson. The stories tend to be somewhat contrived and suffer in comparison to the BBC productions of original Doyle stories in which Clive Morrison starred as Holmes. The organ music gets monotonous, and if I weren't already a teetotaler, the wine commercials would make me take the temperance pledge. Despite all that, the productions are wonderfully entertaining. Basil Rathbone's Holmes exceeds Clive Morrison's overacted Holmes as the day exceeds the night. The chemistry between Bruce and Rathbone is perfect, and the simple stories move swiftly to their satisfying (if somewhat obvious) conclusions. Although Holmes purists tend to hate Nigel Bruce's Watson, I found him to be irresistably likeable. I'd want Doyle's Watson guarding my back in a tight spot, but I'd rather sit by the fireplace and swap stories with Bruce's Watson. I particularly liked the host's introductory visits with Watson in which Watson sets the stage for the mysteries.

the best in live radio
having been born 30 years after the recording of these great radio classics, i feel like I was there during the original broadcasts. Basil rathbone and nigel bruce are surpurb in there roles as holmes and watson. a must have for any sherlock holmes fan.

Home, or something like it
Young people today aren't keeping to the small-town or suburban lifestyles of their parents. They're going to the cities to rent studio apartments. Once there, they're likely to end up moving into family-size spaces.

City planners and administrators are taking this back-to-the-cities trend into consideration. They're trying to make city living appeal to young future owners. One way is by business building up a neighborhood around it, in brownstones; floor-through flats; high-rise apartments; lofts; offbeat converted places such as autoshops and stables; rowhouses; and townhouses.

Likewise, architects are thinking about the loss of peace, privacy and quiet that usually comes with city living. They're coming up with designs that meet young needs for shelter and express young personalities. The result really is personal space inside, even with such impersonal space outside as "shadowy" concrete buildings.

This is done by clearly-defined lines, hand-worked materials, soothing planes, and unusual details indoors. It's also by putting in balconies and terraces and opening up roofs and windows to light and views onto deliberately planted small, green spaces. Similarly, not much space inside looks bigger, for example, by using the same materials in and out, such as cedar flooring, fencing and decking.

THE NEW CITY HOME even brings working spaces inside, while keeping them attractively and cleverly separate from living spaces. In one case, for example, the outside has cottage-style clapboard cladding for the first floor. Indoors, the kitchen and living spaces have a cozy look, what with simple cabinetry, low ceilings and boldly painted colors. The second floor has plywood panels on the outside. Inside, spotlights, skylights, and high ceilings show the upper level to be for work.

What if the two can't always be separated, as in bathrooms or kitchens? Space isn't clearly personal or work, if it brings in universal design. This means, for example, lever handles to doors and faucets, rocker-panel light switches, and textured non-slip flooring.

Leslie Plummer Clagett's book is organized and written in an understandable, user-friendly way. Her choice of illustrations works perfectly with what she says. This practical help to city living is rounded out with Elizabeth Franklin's THE FRANKLIN REPORT, NEW YORK CITY 2003: THE INSIDER'S GUIDE TO HOME SERVICES.

One of the best in this class
I've browsed about twenty different contemporary interior books, and I've found this to be most interesting and slightly more inspiring.

One piece of advice: I don't think any of the contemporary interior books have as much variety as one might expect. Make sure to browse the physical books before making a final decision - don't base you decision on these reviews alone. I've done this with many book on interior design and I've been disappointed.

Wonderful
This book has wonderful photography and covers a broad range of city homes including renovations and lofts. The style of this book is modern and contemporary. Very nice ideas!

A home is more than a place to eat, sleep, and do the laundry: it can be a "calm haven in a hectic world," according to author Julia Barnard, "a state of being" that can be tailored to appeal to all five senses. Because we human beings experience the world around us through our senses, New Decorator devotes whole chapters to strategies for using space, light, color, surfaces, air, sound, and home comforts to create a home that's both sensuous and practical:
Remember that light and air are necessary for your well-being, and that a house must breathe to be healthy. Use color to set the tone of a room.... Choose natural and sustainable materials, such as bamboo and jute, and appreciate their surface texture and variation of color. Acknowledge that silence is sometimes golden, and buy appliances that have the quietest sound.
More than 500 color photos of such sensuous rooms show that this novel, commonsense approach to interior decorating can be realized with thoughtful decorating decisions. The beginning decorator will appreciate sections on such basics as combining primary and secondary colors, using light to create atmosphere and mood, and working with patterns. Do-it-yourself projects include a double-sided screen, rolled beeswax and pressed-flower candles, homegrown milk paint, and a leaf-printed wall, all of which give designers the chance to "enter into the give and take of homemaking." --Stefanie Durbin

Home Bliss
"A home is an extension of ourselves, expressing our interests and beliefs even when we aren't there."

If you love your home, you already know that a home plays a central role in you life. Each home reflects our individual tastes and can be a retreat from the stresses of our modern lifestyle.

This book contains over 500 color photographs to give you inspiring original ideas for every room in your home. There are sections on Space, Light, Color, Surfaces, Air and Sound to demonstrate the principles of successful interior design.

"While natural light is vital for life,
shade and shadows bring repose." pg. 50

Space - How do you think about space? Are you considering a minimalist lifestyle or do you want to order your clutter?

Light - Illuminate a room, use natural lighting or put up curtains to block light.

Color - The decorator's color wheel, explanation of color, using milk paint, an expression of yourself in earth tones.

Surfaces - Flooring, rugs, walls, tables & chairs, visual texture, patterns and stencils.

Air - Circulation, windows, plants & flowers, humidity, moisture.

Sound - Noise & echo, muffling noise, decorative textile hangings, pleasant sounds, wind chimes.

Home Comforts - How do you relax, entertain, cook, sleep, bathe, work?

20 Projects are included throughout the book. You might enjoy making a sunflower stenciled cloth, a double-sided screen, collectable shadow boxes, rolled beeswax candles, curtains, beautiful pressed flower candles, lampshades, cushions or an intoxicating rosemary wood polish. I imagine you could also infuse lavender. How about clove and honey soap you could give as gifts?

I love the "Glass Bead Door Curtain." Totally quaint! And then there is a section on entertaining where they use small rocks hanging on strings as table weights to keep the table cloth from flying away in the breeze.

Useful sections include:

Kitchen cupboard restoration
Painting techniques
Restoring garden furniture
A Resources Section
Easy-to-use Index

A book to read when you want to dream!

Not Just for Decorators!
I found this book amazing because it helps you to organize ideas for any type of design. It allows you to use different elements like color, space, and light in a way that you can combine them with things that you may already have. After applying some of the ideas in my own home I noticed people would come in and feel different, I felt like I was somewhere else. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to little by little begin to redecorate or likes a change every now and then.

Brilliant evocation of an ideal way to live
I just love this book. The evocative messages are an inspiration. Don't just look at the pictures - read this book!

Reader from Youngstown, Ohio
When my daughter was three years old, I read Night House Bright House to her. She enjoyed the book so much that she quickly learned to read the pictured words that rhymed in every sentence. Eventually, she memorized every word in the book--author, titles, all twelve written pages! Family and friends were all amazed. As a result of reading this book, I began teaching my daughter phonics at an early age. Today, she is an excellent reader at age five. I truly recommend this book to all parents who are encouraging their children to enjoy reading.

A fun book that helps children discover their creativity
Night House Bright House is a fun book my 2-1/2 year old daughter really enjoys. When we read it to her we often pause and let her finish the rhymes. Now she looks around the house for objects she can use to make up more rhymes! The brightly-colored pictures are fantastic. My daughter takes the dolls from her magnetic paper dollhouse and uses the pictures as a second dollhouse, making up stories about each page.

This book is great!
This is a wonderful book with very colorful pictures. This book is a good read for children of any age. I am 9 years old and I still love this book even though I am reading much more difficult books. It is funny how most of the things that are saying stuff usually say something like,'"shh-it's night," said the light' or '"Pipe down," said the crown.' My favorite ones are,'"Pit-a-pat," said the mat, "Gobbledygook," said the book, "Spells trouble," said the bubble,' and,'"Stay cool," said the jewel.' I think it's funny how all these things that aren't alive are saying all these weird things. Anyway, this book is great and has fantastic illustrations.

My Soul Sister
My mom used to read this book to me on a daily basis. I loved this book! I asked my mom who gave me the book and she told me that I stole it from the doctors office when I was three years old!The doctor decided to let me keep it because I enjoyed it so much. It is a great book for kids and us adults who forget the gift of respect.

one great book
I read this book to my daughter when she was in third grade. It was such a hit that even now when she is 25 years old, she still talks about it. She loved it so much she has requested a copy for a Christmas gift. It's a great story for any young child. All about learning to get along with people and respect them so that they will respect you.

Wonderfully funny and enjoyable!
I was in 2nd grade when my teacher read us this book. It is about a girl who makes a lot of noise. Another title could've been "Waking Up The Neighbors"! Nobody could stand Noisy Nancy. It is a very good kid's book. The whole class was laughing! We loved it!

My sons favorite book
I started taking my son to the library when he was 1 years old. I would set him on the floor and read to him. Now that he is 4 years he goes with me to the library and he picks out his own books. He always picks this one out, he likes me to read it over & over again. Its very colorful and the book almost comes alive. Its a fun book to read.

This book sparks creativity and can be a great teaching tool
I am an Elementary Literacy Resource Teacher, and I often recommend this book to teachers who are working with their students on color words. What better way for children to learn about the color red than to imagine everything they draw with their red crayon coming to life! This can spark much creativity in children's writing, whether independently or dictated to their teacher. A must for every Kindergarten and First Grade classroom.

A GREAT STORY!
I am a children's librarian and use this book in story hour programs for children age 3 - 6. Everytime I read it a child always comments, "What a great story." I have also used it at a local day care center and the children always ask me to bring it next time because they want to hear it again. It is one of the few books that I have read that made me want to write to the author to tell her how much I enjoyed reading the book. She offers the readers the possibility of the impossible and what a gift that is.

An old favorite
I got my copy of Old Houses in a book store bargain bin several years ago. What a find it was! The houses in this book are honest about their age; no fancy restorations here (but do we really need another book like that anyway?). This book gives you an unusual glimpse of the old houses that don't make the magazine covers. In these houses the plaster may be crumbling, the wallpaper peeling, or the decorating may be hopelessly out of date. In addition to the haunting photography you will find interesting stories about the houses and their families. If you're into historic preservation and you like your old houses "as found" check this book out. This is one I go back to over and over.

an amazing journey to the past
This is such a great book! It embodies the beauty of preservation. Most people would rip out all that old plaster and dated plumbing. I'm thankful that there are people out there preserving our rich history in these lovely old structures.

This book has been an endless source of pleasure.
I discovered this book two summers ago at my local library and have checked it out innumberable times. It has brought back many memories of my great-grandmother's and my grandmother's houses. It has also given me great decorating ideas, the main one being to see the beauty in the age which houses acquire. I have finally bought the book so that I can enjoy it forever and will use it as a guide in living with and appreciating my own home's story. A great read, a wonderful photography book, and a great way to experience the history of old houses.

A Passionate Presentation of Old Testament Truth
The author presents Old Testament truths and historical viewpoints like other Scripture surveys and Bible study books. However, this author has a passion for the Old Testament that is rare among modern scholars. His passion for the subject caused me to be more interested in the subject matter and lead to more enjoyable study as well as increased retention.

Super!
I'm a 32 year bible student and this book is one of the greatest surveys of the bible that I have seen. I'm going to recommend this book to all of my peers

Light to the eyes of the truth-seeker!
Dr. House's book is one that should be on the shelf of every Sunday School teacher. This survey is concise, helpful, easy to read, and it remains true to Scripture. It will open the eyes of the one who has always wanted to know more about the Old Testament but was too afraid to try on their own.
