A Must Have
I own the Great American Quilts books starting from 1987. They are among my most treasured books. I love these books because they include quilts from all over the country and from quilters of all different degrees of experience. My favorite part is seeing the photograph of the actual quilter (or quilters) and reading the history as to how they got involved in quilt making or what was the inspiration for their quilt or the history of the quilt's making. The photographs of the quilts are beautifully taken and color rich. Also included are the patterns for most of the quilts including the templates and fabric requirements. What could be more enjoyable than owning a book that captures the history and advances of quilt making? Truly a must have.

wonderful book!
This book has a wonderful variety of patterns, both applique and patchwork, beginners and advanced quilters both will find patterns to their skill level. I also like the little tips scattered throughout the book, like working with little half triangle squares, making yo-yos. Some of the instructions also come with fancy quilting patterns, which I find very helpful. I also enjoy the little articles about the quiltmakers and their inspiration for making that particular quilt. I also find myself just looking through this book when I need to be inspired to finish another project!

Great book!
This book has lots of inspiring quilts! From cozy country to sweet pastels to jazzy modern quilts, they all are great! I find I am picking up the book when I have a free moment or two just to browse, I seem to learn something new each time, or get a new idea to try on my next quilt project. I like that they feature a variety of styles, applique and patchwork, and offer tips on sewing curves and have some feathered quilting designs. I cant think of how they could make this any better!

Intertwined stories
This complex novel evolves during many years, through the memories and experiences of the characters, within the characteristic arbitrary timing of Vargas Llosa: flashbacks, voices from different ages speaking simultaneously, sudden jumps in time. The action takes place in two basic locations: the high and dry city of Piura, and the Amazonic region of Peru. There are several stories which interact and cross at several points: Fushia, the smuggler who dominates the Indians, whose story is told during his trip with the old Aquilino, down a river; the love story of Lalita and Nieves the soldier; the soldiers of Santa María of Nieva; Sargent Lituma and the Woman from the Jungle; Don Anselmo, the mythical founder of Piura's nightlife, and thereafter a harp-player at brothels; The Unconquerables and the nuns from the convent.

The novel is an epic of life in Peru, a solid and vast book. Characters from the past and the present speak their minds and tell their deeds. The tone is varied, from the sordid to the epic, from city to jungle. A great novel by an accomplished author, in which the different stories slowly converge to paint a broad landscape. In a less dark way, from time to time Faulkner seems to be in the background, Latinamericanized.

magnifico

Guide to Self-Sufficiency

This book changed my life!
I love this book. This book made a suburban middle class optometrist's son into a bearded dirty organic farmer. I checked it out of the library and never wanted to give it back. The artwork is fascinating the complex and friendly drawings give a magical life to the text. From the moment I opened the cover I wanted to do everything Mr. Seymour was writing about from plowing a field to butchering a pig to brewing my own beer. Every concievable farm activity was described in loving detail with amazing illustrations as well. The book sucks you right in like nothing else. There is this timeless turn of the century Victorian England countryside aura about the whole thing that is so inviting. I urge you to find a copy and see for yourself. Maybe you won't decide to become a farmer but it will assuredly make you think about it.

The very best book on doing just about anything yourself!
This book is the most amazing collection of how to on your own, I could have ever dreamed of. For anyone wanting to know how to do any of lifes basics, its in this book. I have had my copy for 20years and still can't believe how good it is. Great thats all, just Great!

Get one if you can, must have!

All the knowledge in the world
All the knowledge in the world is in this one book. Okay, maybe it just seems like it. John Seymour explains absolutely every skill you could possibly need for a self-sufficient lifestyle: gardening, animal husbandry, plowing with horse or tractor, building a hedge, brewing beer, making butter, blacksmithing, hunting, cooking, smoking, fishing, making clothes...EVERYTHING.

As he says, man was not created to be a cog in a wheel--he was created to fend for himself doing a little of everything. When you're done reading this book, you'll want to go out and do just that.

A great collection
A great collection of the works of Elmer Keith,,whatelse can you say!!

Timeless gun lore.
Keith, variously a cowboy, big-game hunter, world-class marksman, and famous gun expert, for many years wrote a regular column in Guns & Ammo Magazine, which is the basis for this collection, in two volumes.
He was a gun and gear designer of some note, having been instrumental in the development of the Winchester Model 70 and also the .41 and .44 Magnum cartridges. His writing skills matched his technical expertise, and there is never any doubt about where he stood on any issue. His advice, especially on safety, is cogent and just as applicable today as when it was written.
Keith was a also an inveterate experimenter with cartridge modification and propellant loads, and the publisher takes pains to warn the reader that Keith's' data is unscientific and suspect, and must not be relied upon uncritically, especially with respect to bullet velocities and chamber pressures. Understanding that, the reader will find a wealth of useful hunting and shooting information here, clearly presented.

(The "score" rating is an ineradicable feature of the age. This reviewer does not 'score" books.)

Fine gun lore.
Keith, cowboy, lawman, big-game hunter, world-class marksman and gun expert, wrote the long-running column in Guns & Ammo magazine upon which this book is based.
Ornery, opinionated, and thoroughly knowledgable on his subject, Keith writes about ballistics, hunting, hand-loading, and accuracy in shotguns, rifles, and handguns, always clearly and cogently, and never leaving the reader unsure of where the writer stands.
Keith is always interesting, and most of his work is relevant today, but the publisher of this compilation takes pains to warn the reader that some of Keith's data is unscientific and suspect, and must not be relied on uncritically, especially with respect to bullet velocities and chamber pressures.

Wonderful original ideas
Being a Latina artist, I was very impressed at the uniqueness of these projects. Each one is a twist on a traditional method. They are easy to read and follow and offer a bit of history about where they came from. If I had any complaint it would be that I didn't have time to finish all the projects in one weekend! That's a good thing though, because now I can stay busy for quite a while ;-)

Living In a Red House
This book takes me back to the time I spent in Mexico a few years ago. It features a variety of decorative home accessory projects for people with different skills from sewing to woodworking. I love the vibrant colors and variety of designs offered here. The book is in full-color and there are step-by-step instructions, accompanied by photos, for each of the 20 projects. Conveniently there are templates and a resource list in back.

Some of my favorite projects include brightly colored circular woven table mats, a copper wire fruit basket, a decorative hot chocolate whisk, cactus pots, a tin wall border, beautiful cut paper candles, an Aztec floor runner and a mosaic heart and spiral pattern table top.

Three projects requiring basic sewing skills and a sewing machine are a cross-stitch table cloth (cross-stitches are painted), appliqued bath towels and drawn-thread curtain. Two others including pillowcases decorated with roses and a butterfly blanket require basic embroidery skill. If you wish to make a lime waxed shelf or a beautiful suede covered stool you will also need basic woodworking skills and power tools such as a jigsaw and an electric drill.

These projects require a little time and effort but none of them are too difficult and the instructions are great. They will make some spectacular and unique accent pieces for your home.

A must-have!
This books is the definitive work about hard disks. It explains everything about all kinds of hard disks. Besides that, it also explains details of SCSI devices and RAID. It has a large database with jumper settings and configuration details of hundreds of hard disks, wich is very helpful to technicians. It comes with a CD-ROM full of very usefull utilities.

I recommend it!
This books explains all you want to know about hard disk, including lots of information on jumper settings and hard disk CMOS parameters.

Incredibly helpful for people who must install hard drives
This is the most useful source I have for hard drive jumper settings, CMOS settings, etc. I have three previous editions, and wouldn't part with any of them. I do computer support for a large academic department of a university, and encounter a wide range of drives, adapters, computers, etc. These books have saved me a lot of time, blood, sweat and tears.

Great buy
The new edition of Harriet Lane is an excellent buy. Concise, up-to-date and precise, it is an essential ward rounds and on call book for all pediatricians.
However, I would suggest two improvements to the publishers:
Better binding (considering how often the book is used) and a slightly darker print-the current one looks faded already, though the font is very user-friendly.
Dr Sajeev

Any physician in a pediatric field needs this book!
I first used the Harriet Lane Handbook during my pediatric rotation in my 3rd year of med school in 1981 (?10th edition), & I still use it (16th edition) in my busy pediatric surgical practice. It is especially useful for med students, pediatric residents, other residents (eg, surgical) when rotating through pediatric services, & practicing pediatricians & other pediatric specialists.

The section I use most frequently is the formulary of drug doses. Physicians treating adults generally memorize the one dose of each drug to give, but kids come in many different sizes, so the handbook is indispensible for drug dosing indexed to body weight. My second most used section is the one with all the growth charts, primarily to check for failure-to-thrive. The other section I use a good bit is the one analyzing baby (& older kid) enteral formulas to help guide nutritional therapy.

My only problem with the Handbook is that it has grown in size with each edition. It used to fit conveniently in a lab coat pocket, & it traveled all over the hospital with me. Now it's almost too big & heavy to carry around, so it stays on my desk (& another on my nightstand by the phone at home).

If you can't get a free copy of the Harriet Lane Handbook from some drug rep, go ahead & buy it.

Essential pocket reference
This book is so often seen on the pediatric ward that it hardly needs a review. I've been instructing residents for 20 years and can't think of one who hasn't used this book from time to time. Indeed, we joke that you can tell how old a pediatrician is by the color of his (her) Harriet Lane.

I must say that in the past I've had reservations about this book. The drug doses were very often conservative, and the formulary (which is the most frequently used part of it) was rather limited. If you ignore the resuscitation drugs, there are those that would find the Lexmark formulary more useful, especially since it includes much of the information that is in the PDR, such as dosage forms.

The present edition remedies the formulary, happily. Each of the sections is evenly well written, and consise, and the material is useful for the day-to-day work of the pediatric resident. Really, Harriet is indispensable, since it includes all the tables of lab values and growth curves that one uses every day. The present edition is so well written that I can hardly imagine future editions that could be improved in any substantial way. This book hardly needs my endorsement. Nonetheless, I heartily recommend it to any house officer who has a rotation on a pediatric ward.

The Haunted Castle: An Interactive Adventure Book

For two years.....
...I have been reading this with/to my grandson. He absolutely loves the intricacy and details shown and drawn... Frankly, I have NOT followed the "interactive formula" but just let him choose his favorite pages... EVERY time we read it together (usually just before bed)he and I find something we have not seen before. There is so much there that this is one of the rare books that has staying power over the years... I am fairly sure he will be looking a this when he is 18, and again when he has children of his own. It is magnificent! I will purchase anything this author chooses to draw in a similar vein.

...and my kids only 6
Every time we walk into our neighborhood bookstore, my son runs over to find "Haunted Castle." I guess it started when the book originally caught my eye, and so I picked it up. I'm an artist, and the drawings are so detailed and intruiging that it drew me in immediately. To top it off, there's a game to be played throughout the book that both my son and I found extremely innovative. In it, Johnny and Jodie have to find their Uncle Barnaby, and so the journey takes you through the many twists, characters, and wonderful drawings where in the end you really don't know if you're going to actually find him. Because my son is not at the reading level the book displays, it's a great way to spend some quality time together without the TV on! I would reccomend "Haunted Castle" to you if you're one to appreciate tallented illustration, great ideas in writing, and enjoy sharing story time with your children.

This book tells many stories with amazing illustrations
Haunted Castle is a book that lets you choose your own path through a terrifying castle. Every time you read the book, the story changes because of the decicions you make. The richly detailed illustrations will keep you entertained for hours and every time you look at an illustration you notice something new. Some of the first rate drawings include a graveyard full of restless spirits, a mad scientist's laboratory, a sunken pirate ship, and a dungeon. Once you finaly find your way out of the castle, there is a surprise that explains the whole mystery!

beyond a mystery
This book is super! This mystery has another mystery inside the first one! The end of the book is extremely surprising!!! I finished this book over the weekend because it was so good!

A Double Mystery in a Clubhouse.
As in all Wishbone tales this story has us looking at a famous book and dealing with another story. In the case of the mystery tales we have a mystery in another mystery. This makes for a doubly mysterious book. It was funny and kind of scary. It as a surprise at the end as all mysteries are. I liked the book and thing everyone should read the whole series.

This book was fun and mysterious.
