Absolutely wonderful
This book is absolutely wonderful! I bought it from clearance at a bookstore randomly and am so happy I did. Everyone - from my 8-year old niece to my mother - has loved this book as well. It is very amusing and kept my interest the entire time. Mr. Rutledge has a wonderful command of the English language, using very vivid descriptions. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone and everyone!!

If you have ever had a cat, you will adore this book!
This short story has it all - love, humor, down home goodness, heroes, and a real true villian. I laughed out loud again and again, gasped in horror here and there, sighed with relief, and relished the victories. Most satisfying short story I've heard in a long time.

Do you really know what your pet is thinking
Diary of a Cat is a perfect short story for everyone who loves cats and those who have any type pet and sometimes wonder what they are thinking. Even if you are only a "people watcher" you will enjoy this journey into the life of a house cat who has the freedom to roam the neighborhood to and see the world from a feline point of view. You will recognize several of these neighbors, some from your past and some from the present state of your life. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll cheer for the hero! Enjoy!

Comprehensive Step-by-Step Instructions
I wish I had seen this book first! This one reference combines numerous topics in one. What I like best are the step-by-step instructions - with photos! I am new at sewing and being able to see what the steps should look like is extremely helpful. Also, the book covered every type of curtain I could think up does such a thorough job with pillow descriptions that I think of the slipcovers section as an added bonus. If you want to decorate your home with neat and professional looking work, get this book!

Good on Pillows and Windows
I love this book , the instructions for pillows are just what I needed and the photos and inspiration for windows are perfect. More attention is paid to other types of decorating though than window treatments. Still this is among my top 5 favorite home decorating books.

Making the difficult things in life easy
What a great book! I'm not good with sewing... in fact, I've never done it before... but this book made everything so easy to understand, and therefore everything was so easy to make. Nobody wants to believe me that I did it all myself!

Magic for Little and Big Witches
I am so glad I have the chance to turn back time and read again the Dorrie books I enjoyed in elementary school. I guess with my own children's excitment over the Harry Potter books, I realized I wanted to visit the Haunted House with Dorrie, Gink, Cook and Big Witch! My daughter who is 15 finally sat and read some of the Dorrie books and after laughing out loud while reading it said "Oh I get it!" this was your Witch Book! Much faster reading (Short Story) still great fun! Did I mention that my children are glad I own them? Next generation for fun with Witches Step Right UP!

Childhood memories
My parents bought me the Dorrie series, and (even though I obviously don't need them to read to me anymore) I still like pulling them out and reading even in my 20's.

Not as fanciful as the Harry Potter series, I like to think it the most important in terms of young socerers...etc. Dorrie is a little girl who just happens to be a witch.

Although I was always bugged by the lack of full color, the love and warmth Dorrie, her family and friends share for each other luminates the text. Of course, I also cannot forget Gink:-) Anybody looking for a good book that both children and parents can get into needs to check this one out.

As a child
As a child I would have my father read my "Dorrie" books over and over. I loved them as a child and I hope that one day - when I have my own - my children will love them as much as I did.

symposium on this book in _Labor History_
Interested in buying this book, or the one on meatpackers by Roger Horowitz? See the symposium on Halpern and Horowitz's work in the journal _Labor History_ 40:2 (1999). They have also jointly authored a collection of oral history interviews -- all available from Amazon

well written account of important moment of classformation
This is one of the best labor history books I've read: it is scholarly, no doubt about that, but SO, SO "readable." Almost like a novel at points. It's important, too, because it sheds much light on the way in which blacks and whites managed to unite around common interests. It also makes wonderful use of oral histories, so that the characters really come to life.

Top Man!
Rick B Halpern is a renowned commentator on the American Meatpacking Industry, and in this meticolusly researched book he chronicles the results of years of inquiry into what Chicago proletarians in hushed tones refer to as 'the big slaughterhouse.' Don't be put off by the picture of the Cow being killed on the front - there's plenty more meat inside and it's not covered in blood and guts. I was particularly impressed by his use of oral history. Too many modern historians ignore this valuable resource, but Halpern is a man on a mission and no lack of written records is going to get in his way. Overall, I found this book was a valuable contribution to an underresearched area and I believe should be read by anyone interested in modern Northern American Labour history.

Beautiful Dreamer
This lovely book proves that a picture is worth a thousand words. I am in the beginning stages of planning my dream retirement home, and I have been looking for a few select books to convey the sense of style I want. This book is the best I have found so far. Tredway's designs are very well thought out -both beautiful AND liveable looking. There are lots of photos of completed structures along with the floor plans and elevations. Please note that as of 11/03/01, the web-site listed in the book is not working. Highly recommended book.

dream cottages
An excellent rendering of architectural style combined with leisure homes. Space, size and style are excellent. A good choice to reveiw your needs and choose a design typical of your area, as well, I believe the author will custom design a project.

Fresh Relief for the Great Outdoors!
I am an investor in cottage properties and buy everything in this catagory I can get my hands on. In 20 years I have not seen such a great collection of interesting and well thought out designs. The author accompanies her designs with information which is pratical and obviously well seasoned.

I would recommend this book to anyone considering recreational construction. I also discovered that these plans and many others are available at a very reasonable cost through their toll free number or via the internet.

Refreshing!

utter amazement
Barbara Bean is one of the best short story writers I have read in a long time. I don't fancy myself a fan of short stories, but she has changed my mind. The details and storylines are absolutly amazing and I love her ideas. She is a huge assest to the writing world and needs to be featured on the ... show! Wow! what a triumph!

Read It In One Night
Bought it, got it signed, and read it in less than 24 hours. This is amazing -- i feel like I know the people in these stories. Can't wait to read her next book!

Where have you been Ms. Bean?
This book is the best compilation of short stories I've read in years. Any one could be developed into a novel.

Graceful and thought-provoking -- a Great Book!
This book was enlightening and bittersweet. The story of the narrator trying to build a home with her partner Sylvia is deceptively complicated. The structure is elegant, the writing beautiful. It ends up being a meditation on life, death, grief, and compassion. Quietly, the story built in power. I loved this book and have read it twice since I first discovered it. It's a gem of a story, and I highly recommend it.

Earth House
Earth House by Jeanne DuPrau is a remarkably moving account of relationships: to the earth, to house-building, to partners....all under the sharp clarity of Zen.

One of the best books in the world
The Earth House is Jeanne Duprau's account of her mid-life search for meaning, her attempt to build a house in the Sierra foothills, and the loss of her lover. It is simple, moving and uplifting, full of truth. The Earth House is a wonderful book.

I have sent and recommended The Earth House to numerous friends and relatives, all of whom loved it. I also had the opportunity to record a chapter of it for a friend who was blinded by AIDS. Like fine poetry, it was even better when spoken aloud; I was overwhelmed by the luminance and flow of its prose. Don't miss this book.

Eight Translation New Testament

Good Parallel Bible
One of my New Testament professors in theological school liked
this parallel bible so much he required us to buy it. It is very
good, the translations are quite good too. It would be nice if
Tyndale replaced the Living Bible with the New Living Translation, but the other seven translations have been chosen
with care. The Living Bible is more suitable for devotional reading or with children than in the study of the Scriptures.
This is worth a look and belongs on the study shelf. You will not be disappointed in the purchase of this NT.

great comparitive bible-study-highly informative
this book not only lets you compare popular translations at a glance, it gives straight answeres to your questions about the translations-controversy-"why do we need new translations?", "which greek manuscripts are the most accurate?", "did copysts add and change the words in copying and how do we know for sure?'-a "must-own" for any serious bible student-no matter what level. if you only buy one bible study/reference work-this is it!

Excellent resource for reading God's Word.
Without knowing which eight translations this volume contained I took a chance and bought it anyway. I'm not regretting it! This volume contains the following eight New Testament translations:- King James 1611, Living, J.B. Phillips, RSV, Good News, NIV, Jerusalem Bible, New English Bible. It's a great way to see how the various teams of scholars have translated from the Greek. It helps enormously to get the real meaning out by glancing through these translations which are all presented across the opened page. I recommend it

Can't go wrong with Elmo!
My daughter, like most kids, is an Elmo FANATIC. This book is nice and big and durable. It keeps her occupied for a while and she also carries it around while she's watching Sesame Street or her Elmo videos!

One of my daughter's favorites!
Ever since my daughter has been a few months old she has picked this book to read over many others that I have purchased for her. Now that she is 17 months old she still chooses this book to read time after time. This book is big and bright and very easy for little hands to handle. Highly recommended!

My son's absolute favorite!!!
This book is wonderful! Grandma gave it to my son as a present when he was around two months old, and now at eight months it is still his absolute favorite. We cannot pass by the book without him "asking" (grunting and pointing) for it to be read. He has each of the pages memorized and knows what to expect next as we turn the pages together. The pages are large so they are fun for him to touch and handle. The illustrations are simple and bright and hold his attention for a long time. We read this book together every day and it truly makes my son happy. Highly recommended!

A great "do along" book
My son got this as a favor at a birthday party when he was one. He loves this book and wants us to read it to him over and over. Now, when we say "Elmo says touch your nose!" He will do it! The best one is when "Elmo says do a shimmy shake"! You have to see it. I just wish it was a board book instead of pages, since he has ripped out several pages and now I need a new copy.

A Great Value
This is a wonderful book for an extremely low price. I bought eight of them as birthday party favors. It is perfect for small children.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL
This book is wonderful for toddlers. It teaches them to follow instructions while having fun with their Sesame Street fans. My daughter is 16 months old and knows the book by heart. I would recommend every family have this book in their childs library.
