New York, New York : How the Apartment House Transformed the Life of the City (1869-1930)

Architectural history of the New York apartment house
Elizabeth Hawes traces the development of the New York apartment house, beginning with the Stuyvesant (1869), and then discussing the earliest middle-class and upper-class buildings of the 1870s. As Hawes explains how design evolved through the decades, she examines such classic buildings as the Villard Houses (1885), the Dakota (1884), and the Osborne (1885), as well as others of lesser fame. My favorite chapter is the 13th (of 14 chapters), in which Hawes compares three famous architects of the 1920s: Roth, Carpenter, and Candella. As the title indicates, the book's coverage ends at 1930. The author has done more than merely catalogue buildings; instead, she shows how changes in design reflect changes in society and an effort to learn from past design errors. There are 5 floor plans and approximately 50 photographs. As much as I enjoyed this book, I prefer Cromley's 'Alone Together,' which struck me as a slightly better treatment of the same material, with more illustrations. However, Hawes' 'New York, New York' covers the 1920s, a pivotal decade in New York apartment architecture, which was not covered in Cromley's book.

Some Great Stuff
There's a thread of Raymond Carver running through these stories. Especially "Foley as Crabman." It'd be interesting to see the author's original vision for the collection, but the book is a worthy read despite the edited structure.

A page turner; funny, sophisticated, and truely enjoyable
A fantastic collection of comtemporary short shorties. Chiarella is definately one of America's future literary stars. Foley's Luck is a fantastic read, I'm sure you will enjoy it as much as I did!

Floor plans of New York's luxury apartment buildings
Originally published under the title 'Apartments for the Affluent,' this book is aimed at a very narrow audience indeed. Alpern takes us through 75 luxury Manhattan apartment houses in chronological order, from 1869 to 1974. Each building has a full-page b&w photograph, a diagram of a typical floor plan, and a quarter-page-or-so description. Alpern explains the reasoning behind the various room arrangements, and how that reasoning evolved over the years. I enjoyed this book immensely, but it's not for everyone. If you ever walked by an older high-rise apartment building and wondered how the rooms were arranged and why, this slender volume will fascinate you. Otherwise, you may prefer a book that's a more general survey of the topic (including some by the same author).

Excellent book!
Finally I got a hold of this book! Great floor plans; but as usual, I would have liked more interior pics (hardly any).

Amazing Details
This book provides excellent descriptions and floor plans of many of New York's finest apartments. It proved to be a great guide book on a recent trip to the city.

A piece of mind for the romantic architect in us all.
This book is indeed a true friend to the intellectual who knows the Socratean dialauges by heart. Some may take this book as a literal text but there is a vast philosophy to it. It's about human nature and pure emotion. It defines the the line between "love" and "in love". How is it that the story of but a few people can relate to everybody. It is but a grain of sand in the ocean that is the mind of God. A house without love can not be a home. This book had me hooked from the begining with a story of love. Though the times were changing the charactors stayed the same throughout and overcame the obstacles as one. Love is when two bodies share but a single soul. In the end they are freed from deception and lead to the truth. I sent a copy to my friend who teaches anthropology at Columbia. He wants to have his students read it as a testimony of humanity.

Out of this world! Un....Belivable
I will never forget this book. The realness of it all, the charactors and the love they shared through the natural hardships of life and love for life itself. This book is a classic for the present and should be a required book for students of humanities. I feel as though the book is now a part of my soul as are the charactors that I've come to know and love.

Fantastic!
A really fine read. Sheila Horder is an absolute sorceress of text. The begining hit me in the hart and the lives of these people made me feel great to be alive. This book is FANTASTIC! I recomend it to anyone.

A surprisingly quick read
It's hard to believe that James's theatrical turn of the late 19th century ended with his audience "booing" him off the stage. This novelized play reads quickly and delightfully. I've read more than twenty of his novels, and this was the quickest of them all.

The plot is simple enough (at least for James): two houses, apparently back to back, in Wilverley, a small English village, set the scene. One contains a widow, the other a young married couple. The young wife widows the young husband, and he becomes Wilverley's "most eligible bachelor," except for the fact that he promised his dying wife that he would never marry again, at least not during the life of his child. So somebody has to kill the child, right?

Enter James's genius for character. There's Paul, the huge, infinitely imperturbable son of the wealthy Mrs. Beever; the diminutive and impetuous Dennis Vidal; Tony Bream himself, a remarkably good-natured but insensitive fool; and the powerful Mrs. Beever, whose awful determination cows every one else before her. Like James's best writing, his characters become interesting on their own; his fictions become an opportunity to satisfy curiosity. I think that's what makes this book a "page-turner"; the characters are interesting enough that I want to know what's going to happen.

In the end, I suppose, what makes this book succeed is what would have made the dramatic version fail: James's endless fascination with the workings of the human mind must have become either painfully boring or just incomprehensible to a theatrical audience. However it came about, I recommend it unequivocally.

real, rounded characters
This book is a novelization of the play by the same name. And you can see the stageplay - the characters are continually coming and going - and there's stage business - all of which I think shows some stiffness - yet about half way through the novel I was startled at how much the characters were real, rounded - I could just about see them - they ached with life - I was always aware of the stage during the novel - the story itself is rather shocking - it's a mystery novel! - it's all very well done - it's short - and it's very psychological

Unexpected Page Turner--Timeless
I am impressed with The New York Review's revival of this unexpectedly non-Jamesian title. A truly unique James choice to bring back to life--it's been done so with a cover so compelling (I'm not a tradional James fan) I opened the book which I found locally in a brick and mortar as they are now called, book shop. The internet cannot do justice to the thoughtful sophistication of this book's packaging. (But I can purchase another copy here more easily!) The publisher's comments about the work were also compelling and complimentary to the cover art. The Other House is a mystery, a detective story, a love triangle with more than three angles--a true page turner--with a timelessly human plot and "modern" characters. Anyone thriller fan would be enchanted with it. And turning every page, holding the book, is a sensory thrill. Paper, writing, art--all representative of what any literary rebirth deserves. If it's worth bringing back--do it with quality, I say! They did--along with a whole marvelous collection of equally intriguing books, with well written new introductions. Good choices--the pieces themselves, the introduction authors and the book artist designers. Truly timeless in all ways!

This book has the answers
I like this book very much. Not only does it answer color questions for inside my house, but it gives me color guidance and inspiration for the outside of my house (which is in dire need of a paint job). The photography in the book is lovely . The detailed instruction for choosing colors makes it easier than I thought it would be. This beautiful book is a useful tool.

Very good resource
My wife and I found this book very helpful in determining colors for the outside of our house. I learned what was needed to prep and paint the house as well. My wife enjoyed the information on color for our rooms and is planning a color scheme. This book is worth the investment.

Quick and Easy Paint Color Solutions
I gave this book to several friends as house warming and wedding gifts. Both friends said they loved the book, but more than that, they were able to get use out of it. One friend found a beautiful putty paint color for the outside of her house. Her house looks amazing with charcoal colored shutters. She is so happy with the result. My other friend chose a color scheme for her living room, dining room and family room. She said the book made it easy. I have since purchased a copy for myself. I'm reading it now and am getting very inspired to make changes in my own home.

Algis Budrys said it best: "Most writers show and tell. Nina Hoffman sings." Past the Size of Dreaming is the wonderfully inventive continuation of A Red Heart of Memories. Readers rejoin the wandering witches Matt (Matilda) Black and Edmund Reynolds as they revisit and heal the painful past. For those who've not yet read the first book, Hoffman reintroduces them with "Matt Black smiled. She had found Edmund three months earlier in a pioneer graveyard, and she had stayed with him ever since." Matt "spent most of her time talking with things instead of people" because "anything shaped by humankind might have a story to tell her." Edmund and Matt have found two of Edmund's childhood friends, Nathan the ghost and Suki (Susan), the girl Edmund rescued from an abusive father. They seek the others, Julio, Deirdre, and the twins, Terry and Tasha. To defeat the demon-controlling master wizard who once abducted Julio and is still controlling Galen, his apprentice, they must pool their magical resources. --Nona Vero

Filled with imagery and strong characters
When a house of witches is threatened by a greater power, the group must call in reinforcements from the past and form an even tighter band in order to survive. While familiarity with Hoffman's past titles on the theme will lend a quicker appreciation for the setting here, her fine story will engross even newcomers, filled with imagery and strong characters.

more wonderfulness from hoffman
Nina Hoffman is a remarkable writer. Her world and characters will keep you surprised, amazed, and reading. PAST THE SIZE OF DREAMING is a worthy follow-up to A RED HEART OF MEMORIES. Readers who have wondered about Matt and Edmund since the first book will be delighted to find out more; those who have not yet met them will be delighted, too.

I recommend ALL of Hoffman's work. She's one of the most innovative fantasists writing today, and her work has appeal to both adult and teenaged readers, which is no mean feat.

A Wonderful Sequel
I loved this book. I'd been looking forward to it for a long time and it lived up to my expectations. Filled with transformations and strange magic, Past the Size of Dreaming continues the story begun in A Red Heart of Memories. Having found Edmond's friend Suki and settled (temporarily) in the magical, sentient house which served as the safe haven for Edmond and his friends during their adolecent years, Edmond and Matt attempt to locate Julio and Deirdre. Matt learns of the events that helped to drive the four friends apart fifteen years earlier through dreams which the magical house sends her. When Edmond tries to find Julio with magic he fails. Leaving Suki and her ghostly boyfriend Nathan (who is trapped in the house except on Holloweens and seances) to keep the house company, Matt and Edmond go in search of Deirdre, who is relatively easy to locate. A drive to the desert finds her ensconced as a small-town, small-animal vet. She is happy to see Edmond but reluctant to return with him to the house. Using their very different magics (Edmond can communicate with the natural world, whereas Matt can communicate with human-made objects) and some common sense, they end up finding everyone, including the twin witch sisters Tasha and Terry and the person Julio has become. Everyone has changed, some more than others. As the friends get to know each other anew, an old enemy begins to move against them. I don't want to give away what happens next, as this book is filled with many fantastic surpises. The writing is supurb and fans of Ms. Hoffmans earlier work will not be disappointed. Be prepaired for an engrossing, beautiful read.

Fantastic Family Oriented Book
Great book for reading out lound MANY MANY times as I have to my 4 year old daughter.

It is a pleasant book about a family that goes to the beach and spends a week together every year. It makes the adult reading it long for a family vacation with the idealic family featured in the book - instead of the one most of us probably have.

The pictures are great - We always point to the Aunt, Uncle, Cousin, or Grandma that is featured in the print. I highly recommend it and intend to purchase more of the books by this talented authour/artist.

Our child's favorite book
Our copy is now worn from the nightly reading. The Pink House is our son's favorite request at bedtime. The author spins a warm and loving tale of an extended family on a beach vacation. It teaches relationships of family members and the simple wonders of the beach. The hand sketches of the aunts and uncles in their bathing suites are delightful. Because it is so true to ideal beach vacations, I recommend this book to all families with young children. We even tracked down the real house so our kids could have their picture made in front of THE PINK HOUSE.

A vivid and enjoyable trip to the beac.
This book was read to me - and I can't wait to read it to others. The wonderful graphics make it a delight! An excellent book for kids from 3 to 30.

Home-building from a master craftsman's point of view
A charming and informative look at the process of building a house by someone who understands the process all too well. The book has lots of good information about decision-making and building techniques, but what really shines through is Abram's admiration and respect for the craftsmen who built the house with him.

GREAT BOOK, LOTS OF BACKROUND INTO THREE GENERATIONS OF NORM
GREAT TO READ ABOUT NORM'S PROBLEMS AND THE FACT THAT EVERYTHING DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK RIGHT. THE BACKGROUND ON NORMS FAMILY AND THE FACT THAT 3 GENERATIONS WORKED ON NORM'S HOUSE MAKES THE PRICE WILL WORTH IT...I HAVE READ IT TWICE AND MEASURED IT ONCE.

Norm's shows the pride of craftsmanship
If you are a follower of Norm Abram since the beginning of PBS "This Old House", you would enjoy this book. He has taken all the lasted innovations from all his shows, and built a beautiful home for his wife and family. The barn restoration where they had timber frame construction, used that method for the great room with the carvings up in the beams has allowed Norm to express his talent. Then the eyebrow window placed over the wing, had to cut each and every roof shingle to fit the angles.
