Love and Houses: A Novel

Love and Houses, by Marti Leimbach, is a very entertaining book, at times even laugh-out-loud funny. The narrator, Meg Howe, is 37 years old, seven months pregnant, and newly separated from her husband, Andy. She is also literally between homes because she and Andy bought one house before selling their apartment and are now saddled with two mortgages they can barely afford to pay. To Meg, houses and relationships are inextricably entwined. One friend, she says, "bound by custody laws to remain in her home, gutted all three stories . . . and rebuilt the entire inside so that not one brick or fragment of mortar from her marriage remained . . ." Another "took up with a guy she met from work and bought the house next door to him." Naturally, the first question that comes into Meg's head upon her husband's desertion is what to do about her real estate situation.

If Meg seems a little flip, it's only because she's fighting to maintain her equilibrium. As Leimbach peoples her novel with old friends, old lovers, eccentric but lovable errant husbands, and new babies, houses stand for stability. When her friend Carla asks Meg why she cares so much about "a house, a mere structure," Meg responds: "It's what it means." Love and Houses is a delightful foray into love, marriage, divorce, and community property.

Love and Houses.
Marti Leimbach's third novel is fantastic. From the first line, you are there. You care about her. You laugh at and with her. You love her for all the reasons you would probably want to strangle her. She is a protagonist you can root for. She is every women. She is smart, funny and not immune to her own follies. The novel is so much fun. It is playful and hysterical and overwhelmingly sweet. She is masterful with dialogue. The story seems trite at first: Hubby ditches knocked up wife, but Leimbach uses this seemingly cliched set up to weave a novel filled with wonderful characterizations, witty observations and outrageous situations. I loved this book so much. I was drawn by the cover, but had no idea what a treasure awaited me.

Humorous, Addictive
"Love and Houses" is about Margaret "Meg" Howe, a pregnant 37-year-old who has just been abandoned by her husband (Andy Howe) while she's seven months' pregnant with their daughter Frances. Andy's leaving her isn't too startling; he's always had a fear of commitment--leaving Meg several times at the altar; panicking over job promotions before finally quitting to become a bookstore owner.

Now Meg has the sole responsibility of remodeling and selling their two homes. To make matters worse, an old flame from Meg's college years reenters her life as a buyer for her house. She struggles between falling for her ex-lover who has done a positive 180 personality-wise or remaining true to her deadbeat husband. Tough decision, huh?

I highly recommend "Love and Houses", especially if you're like me and tend to avoid syrupy fiction about marriage disasters. It could have turned into a woe-is-me, depressing book, but it was surprisingly funny and lighthearted. It's well worth finding a copy and owning. You'll definitely want to reread this one.

Excellent.
I bought this at a second-hand store. If you find it, grab it. It's one of my favorite divorce books, next to Letter to My Ex-Husband. Meg's funny, smart and falling to pieces. It's warm and funny and full of lines you'll want to read out to other people.

Since I like scary stories, I really, really liked this one. The best part was when they heard a ghost playing the piano. The ghost's name is Lonesome Luke.

Fins Up for Dolphins at Daybreak
My name is Grant. I am in third grade. Last week I read DOLPHINS AT DAYBREAK because it looked like a really exciting book. DOLPHINS is my favorite Magic Treehouse book so far. I have already read VIKING SHIPS AT SUNRISE and CIVIL WAR ON SUNDAY. I would give all of the Magic Treehouse books I have read 5 stars, but I like DOLPHINS best because I love dolphins and the submarine adventure was really exciting!!!

Here's a bit of what happened: Annie was curious about the mini-submarine and talked Jack into exploring it. Inside the sub Annie pushed the wrong button and it started to go down to the bottom of the sea. They saw an Octopus, which started to grab the submarine...they also saw a hammerhead shark...

That's all I will tell you or it will spoil the story for you.

Night of the Ninjas
Night of the Ninjas is easy to read with short chapters and pictures. This book can hold the interest of children from 8 on up. The characters are fun and children can relate to them. The characters are a brother and sister, so this book will be of interest to either boys or girls. I have found that the Magic Tree House Books make children want to learn more about history.

Mainstay: For the Well Spouse of the Chronically Ill

From the heart
Maggie Strong has written a hands-on book for those who are living with a chronically ill spouse or partner. She speaks from her own personal experience and shares the stories that other caregivers have told her. Strong was the first one to write a book that 'tells it like it is." Her writing brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion because I thought my experiences with an ill husband were unique. This book showed me that I was not alone, where to turn for help in finding support groups, how to handle difficult family situations, and most importantly, gave me hope that I could carry on. Being a caregiver is a very lonely existence...most of the attention focuses on the person who is ill. However, illness impacts the entire family. The healthy or well spouse should not be an invisible part of the equation. Brava to Maggie Strong for her courage and for leading the way on this important topic.

Validation and Practical Help for a Well Spouse
When my husband was diagnosed with a chronic illness in 1992, I was totally unprepared for the major lifestyle changes that it brought about, even though I am a nurse. When I found "Mainstay", it was as though I was no longer alone. There was someone who not only understood but who was able to clearly articulate the experience. The illness and the circumstances were different but the feelings were so similar. The book also gives realistic and practical ways to survive as a well spouse. However, for me, the best part was that the book led to an ongoing organization, the Well Spouse Foundation, that continues to provide support, education, and hope to many well spouses.

The author offers solid advice, restorative support
For anyone who is living through the challenges of caring for a loved one who is chronically ill, this is a voice of sense and compassion, spoken by one who obviously knows what she's talking about from first-hand experience. Maggie Strong explores every aspect of the experience, from the first dreadful diagnosis of her mate's emerging disease to the social and emotional changes that inevitably wash over the family's daily routines. And while she never glosses over the terrible toll such an experience can take on every member of the family, she also offers plenty of affirming information on what caregivers can do to save themselves while negotiating these difficult waters. I can't recommend this book enough. Short of knowing Maggie Strong personally, I can't imagine having a better companion for the journey my husband and I must travel. The book has literally saved my life! Thank you, Maggie.

--Nobody does it like Mary--
MARY ENGELBREIT'S HOME COMPANION is a delightful book filled with her charming illustrations and beautifully decorated rooms.

If you're a fan of ME than you'll really enjoy this book. The photographs are good and the book is chock full of uniquely decorated rooms. I honestly have to say that almost every room has something in it that I would like to incorporate into my own home.

There are fifteen chapters and at the end of each a "project" is presented with instructions called "Watch ME Make It." Some of these are: A Tea Towel Pillow, Hand-Painted Picture Frame, and Birdhouse Bookends. Most of the projects seem to be fairly simple to do. To be honest, I don't usually do projects, but I'm very tempted to try to make several of these.

I loved looking at how "various collections" are incorporated into the styles of the different rooms. I'm a bit of a collector myself, and it was a treat for me to notice that some items that I have from my own collections are featured in the pictures.

It may sound odd to say this about a book on decorating, but I found HOME COMPANION to be very uplifting and a joy to read. I think I could live in this book!

Fabulous!
This book is whimsical, inspiring and it just plain makes me happy! I have looked at it so many times, I have almost memorized it. Anyone who is familiar with Mary Engelbreit loves her and her books are absolutely the best. If you want your home to have a fun, colorful, unique look, buy this book.

Mary Engelbreit at her Best!
ME is an inspiration to all of us who love her style without the fuss. Her ideas for the home are simple to obtain and cost very little. I have shared this book with many of my friends, and they too are now hooked.

Helpful for kids who can't concentrate or remember details!
A great cd(s) to have. I've initially tried it out with children who loves to talk and can't focus long enough to listen and pick up necessary information from people around them. The interesting stories kept them focus for the duration and encourages them to recall and discuss the story later.

It also helped rekindle a particularly slow reader's, in grade school, interest in reading. He is now keen to give reading another go if he gets to listen and visually follow the words in the book.

How I wish subsequent books are also available in cds instead of just cassettees only!

Captivated my 3.5 yr old son and almost 7 yr old daughter
My seven year old daughter received the set of CDs (books one through eight) for Christmas. She listened to books one, two, and four non-stop, in one morning. Now, two days later, she's listened to them all, some twice.

I had the first book on hand, and she followed along page by page. Later that day I went to the library and got as many of the rest of the eight that I could, and she drank them up! It was great to watch her "reading along", and I'm sure it will help her feel more confident as she begins to read chapter books.

What really amazed me though, is that my 3 and a half year old son listened as well. Though he sometimes played while he listened, he was obviously caught up in the excitement of pirates, knights, dinosaurs, and the rest.

I found the books easy to listen to, and interesting enough. The author does a great job of using her voice to distinguish whose talking. I am amazed at how well the stories kept my kids' attention for hours at a time! And introduced them to some history as well, no less.

One thing to note though, our "disc two" is labelled as though it were disc three, and vice versa. A little confusing, but we figured it out. (5 discs in all).

Magic treehouse books 1 to 8
The magic treehouse books are fun to read. There are big adventures in each book. The kids go back in time and do neat stuff. I like when the kids find their way back to the magic treehouse at the end of the books. I like that if they are wearing short sleeves and short pants and they are in cold weather, they find coats and things they need in the adventure. Sometimes the people can be nice or mean, but the kids always get away before the bad guys get them!

Good Book
I've finally read through this book. It was what I expected and I would recommend it for people to learn layout and how to go from a drawing to the work bench. It is a general book that gives you solid principles on measurement and proportion.

More Than You May Think
This book really surprised me. I was hopeful that it didn't simply tell you how to read a tape measure. And I was right. Just about any experience level will learn something from this book but the person new to woodworking will learn the most. I'm somewhat in between beginner and moderate experience and I was impressed. You learn some really nifty tricks for getting accurate angles, finding bisecting angles, working with arcs and more.
You also learn how to lay out a project to save material (and make your work easier).
Believe me, you will enjoy reading this book. Well written, informative and lots of clear color photos and other illustrations. No sloppy, halfhearted drawings in this one.

Good introductory woodworking book
This book bills itself as a course in shop math and measurement. With a few extra chapters, it could be an excellent introduction to woodworking. Tolpin takes us through the entire process from project design and layout to developing a list of materials and cut list. He then introduces a number of layout and marking tools to transfer the measurements accurately to the wood. Next, he talks about a number of cutting techniques, followed by a chapter on preventing and fixing mistakes.

The author raises an interesting point: if you can cut the work to the proper size, it doesn't matter if you have a numeric value for the dimension. There are a number of techniques such as story poles and marking devices which do not rely on numeric values, and which can be more accurate than conventional measurements. More common measuring tools are considered as well; he shows that there is more than meets the eye even with the common tape measure.

In the section on cutting to the lines, he shows a number of basic techniques on both hand tools and power tools. There is some interesting discussion here about tradeoffs between different tool choices. He also presents some simple jigs, which I am looking forward to building. The jigs here are much simpler than the ones he describes in Table Saw Magic. For a very small book, there is a wealth of information here which will take some time to digest. I heartily recommend the book.

Good technical reference
Starts with the basics. The first section is titled "What is Microwave?" It moves along very quickly to path planning, site surveys, performance objectives, design criteria, descriptions of various equipment components and configurations and then to propagation phenomena and some real world examples. Some helpful references to the software package that the author uses. The introduction for the book was even written by the head software engineer that wrote the program. If I had to recommend one general reference on microwave, this would be it.

Excelent to start in the wireless design Business
Trevor, gives an excelent description on wireless design focusing on the microwave sector, giving formulas and the proper adjustments for the best results . THESE BOOK IS THE BIBLE OF THE MICROWAVE WIRELESS DESIGNER MANUEL DE LA ROCHA SR. WIRELESS ENGINEER

Great Fun and perhaps a hidden lesson?
This is a wonderful children's book that I have used as a told story in many settings. The story has equally entertained and informed both children and adults as the poor Ming Lo goes about "moving" his mountain.

Beautiful, funny, childhood classic
Ming Lo and his wife live next to a mountain. The mountain constantly drops rocks on their house; clouds form at the peak and rain falls on their house (through the holes the rocks have already made) and it blocks the sun. Eventually, they have had enough!!

Ming Lo's wife sends him off to the village wise man that first tells them to run at the mountain with a large pole-this will knock the mountain far away. Of course, it doesn't work, so Ming Lo returns to the wise man many times to ask his advice. Each suggestion grows more and more silly until the last one that actually works!!

Mr. Label is most well known for his Frog and Toad books. The illustration style is similar with "Ming Lo", sharing similar muted colors but with softer outlines. The pictures highlight the foolishness of Ming Lo and his wife as they bang pots and pans at the mountain to scare it away or bring food to the summit to appease the mountain god. The wise man is an amusing character, sitting under a small pagoda in purple robes smoking a pipe (he produces more and more smoke each time that Ming Lo comes to ask him questions, to the point that he can barely be seen).

The story is easy to read and fun without being ridiculous. It's an excellent book for beginning readers and will keep children interested as they read on to find out what Ming Lo and his wife will be up to next! Highly recommended.

Classic book for all times
I first heard this story being read to my fifth grade class. It was a story that I would never forget because it was both hilarious and detailed. Here I am, years later buying a copy for my unborn child to enjoy when she comes into the world..
