An erotic and heartbreaking tour-de-force
Writer's Showcase Review:

"Flawless...(Snowden) has an inimitable voice that explores satire, sexuality, depression and angst - and most importantly he's not afraid to lay it down on paper the way he sees it. Like a good photographer, the poet sees beneath the surface and shallow ends. This is a fine (debut) collection that deserves to be heard. There's a message here for a lot of us."

Feel the impact!
Everyone has days of raw emotion, rarely is their talent, however, that can put these emotions into words that convey their power. James Snowden is a clear example of a poet with the artistry to do just that. His poems translate how we all feel, but are unable to express. Buy this book and feel the strong impact that the written word can make.

Buy this book!
We've all been there - haven't we? To those emotional places where the world seems to shift and change, where you feel as if no one has ever felt this way before. And, yet, suddenly there is a work of literature that puts into words the raw emotions we experience every day. This is the work of a powerful poet. Not to be missed.

Science as poetry
Science writer Ackerman (Notes from the Shore, 1995) takes her title from a motion sculpture that, when activated by a crank, may drop a marble into a cup-or may jiggle a blade to fall like a guillotine-her metaphor for evolution in general, as well as one's own hereditary fate. Ackerman personalizes her tale of the wondrous interplay of genes and environment in the history of life on earth with biographical details: growing up with a sister born microcephalic (small-brained), the early cancer death of her mother, the rapid decline of her witty grandmother to Alzheimer's disease, and her own intense pleasure in giving birth to normal, healthy daughters. These events ground her orderly exposition of the role of heredity in shaping evolution and individual life, from the fertilization of the egg to old age. So as she ponders the cause(s) of microcephaly, she discourses on the history of genetics, DNA, and the gene families common to humans, fruit flies, and worms. She reminds us that nature continually dips into the same bag of tricks when creating and maintaining life. Genes mastermind body shape and organ development in the embryo, repair DNA, orchestrate cell death, and elaborate the nervous, immune, and endocrine system proteins that enable cross-talk between cells and their environment. Mutations of the gene are common in cancer (which is why oncologists speak of all cancers as genetic-the cancer cell's DNA becomes deranged in ways that allow it to multiply uncontrollably). Women who have given birth may be more prey to autoimmune diseases (like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis) because their bloodstream carries more foreign cells to trigger an immune reaction-due to two-way cellular traffic across the placenta. These are among the scores of research findings Ackerman details, along with cross-species comparisons of olfaction and vision, the importance of symbiosis in nature (think of all those helpful bacteria that colonize your gut), and discussions of circadian rhythms, the meaning of sex, and the process of aging. All this is related in a rich, baroque style, one that allows Ackerman to celebrate the unity of nature even as she marvels at evolution "as a unfolding scroll shot through with mystery."

Science Poetry
In the last few years the notion that all living things are cut from the same cloth -- that we are all somehow related to each other -- has more and more become a matter of biological fact. Increasingly, the scientific evidence shows that from yeasts to worms to humans, all organisms are guided by similar genes and proteins that have been passed down nearly intact for hundreds of millions of years. At the most fundamental level, humans are genetically linked to every part of the natural world. In Chance in the House of Fate, Ackerman has woven these astonishing discoveries into a mesmerizing, illuminating, and deeply personal story of heredity, while fearlessly exploring its implications on our everyday lives. Pregnant with her first child, she anxiously calculates the odds that her baby will inherit the gene that caused her younger sister's profound retardation. Unveiling the science of cell growth, she describes the heartbreaking cancer that claimed her mother's life. Carrying her daughter on her hip at the crack of dawn to observe the millennial orbit of a comet, she contemplates the universal circadian rhythms that measure the passing of time. Haunting, fascinating, and gorgeously written, Chance in the House of Fate opens yet more doors into the mysteries -- and beauties -- of the miracle of life.

The poetry of biology
It is often heard that there is no beauty in the "world according to Darwin", that biology has unweaved the rainbow and left no joy or beauty in its place. Not true, as demonstrated by this personal and scientific tour of modern biology. Ackerman covers a broad range of topics but always with a deeply personal viewpoint, and manages to tell at once the joys and sorrows of her life and the scientific story behind them. A true joy to read.

What a Gorgeous Book!!
I just decorated my entire apartment in a fusion-asian style and this book was the last item I bought - to sit on my coffee table and accentuate the living room. I look at it all the time!!

Beautiful pictures throughout. What a wonderful book!!

China......SO CHIC!
If you are interested in Chinese art, culture, clothing, and history, then this is your Bible. Chalked full of photos that pop off the page. This witty and interesting book takes you from Ming to present day China. Vivienne Tam reflects on her life, born in mainland China, raised in Hong Kong, then moving to New York. She tells charming stories about what has influenced and inspired her and her collections. Great interviews with members of China's creative community, and who can forget Mao? The book is designed like a large coffee table version of Mao's little red book! This is simply stunning.

Hong Kong and China Brilliantly Observed
Big book with stunning and bright photo illustrations that "bleed" off the page.

Ms. Tam understands the style of Hong Kong and China (especially Shanghai) like few others; the best of that style is all here. She writes with enthusiasm and love for many essential aspects of the appeal of a culture known for its centuries-old aesthetic and for its mass-production and other mass sensibilities.

Tam's education at the Hong Kong Polytechnic gives her a unique vantage point for isolating Chinese chic. She can view Cultural Revolution paraphrenalia with the eye of a designer, collector, and artist, rather than with painful memories. In a show of global sophistication, she understands East-meets-West sensibility (her chapter on Chinglish is told with an appealing tenderness). The text comes off without a shimmer of self-consciousness or compulsion to 'be Chinese.' There is camp, sex, zen, pizzazz and beauty, exploding off of every page and augmented by Tam's tales of exploration and appreciation.

Bonus interviews with composer Tan Dun and choreographer/visionary Danny Yung are painfully short, but the reader still gets a healthy dose of young Chinese intelligensia. The text is endearingly personal, Vivienne Tam sharing with the reader what her senses take in. It's quite delightful.

Great keepsake for people who have visited Hong Kong or Shanghai!

Excellent Bible Translation.
As a librarian I frequently encounter new versions of the bible that are usually word for word translations that never attempt to translate the original languages into meaningful and understandable english. The Christian Community Bible is a rare exception. Its clear and simple English is very enlightening and its introductions and notes are nothing short of a mini commentary that reveals the correct context and setting of each book. I highly recommend this translation to all who yearn to comprend to simple message of Jesus.

Better than Full Life Study and Halley's combined.
This seems to be one of the least known and least-reviewed Bibles out there, and yet it is a book that every student of the Christian Scriptures should have. I am a free-thinking student, not a Catholic. But that doesn't prevent me from seeing the excellent qualities in this work. Here are the pros:

1. Wonderful translation. The introduction does not tell us how this translation came to be. I assume it was commisioned by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). But the translation is a pleasure to read: modern but not as casual as the Good News Bible. I have various translations of the Bible, and so should you, since this may not be the most accurate. But the spirit of the Word (if you will) is there, and this is what I use most of the time.

2. Recognizes (to an extent) modern criticsm and research. Unlike the NIV Full Life Study, and Halley's Handbook, the commentators of the CCB do not shun or condemn the theories of modern scholars. Those two books are valuable in their own right, but I feel that they are narrow-minded, dogmatic and even hostile at times. By contrast, the CCB acknowledges when the authorship or historical validity of a book is doubtful (e.g. the Book of Daniel and 2 Peter). It also notes how silly some interpretations of Revelation are.

3. Comments are often longer, warmer and just more interesting than that of the Full Life Study. That book often just sums up passages, as if you aren't smart enough to figure that out for yourself. The CCB, instead of just repeating what a chapter says, seems to REFLECT deeply on it. Compare the commens on the Fall of Man, for example.

4. Important passages in the OT are in large print; less important ones not relevant to Christian teaching are in smaller print. This enables you to see at a glance which are the highlights of a book. I do not always agree with the commentators' choices, though.

5. The sides of the pages are marked (like Merriam Webster's) to make it easier to open the book you want to read.

6. There are a few things here that I didn't find in the Full Life or in Halley's, e.g. what the initials of the Lord's Prayer stand for. :-)

And now the cons:

1. No concordance. Only brief indexes, and historical overviews. No maps, either.

2. Commentaries are printed in small text. You MIGHT need a magnifying glass.

3. In some cases, commentaries are unexpectedly short.

4. It does get too dogmatic in some places, but THAT is expected. Of course, as a free-thinker, that bugs me. But if you are a staunch believer, you'll love it!

5. Order of books is different, as mentioned below. But I like it.

So, overall, GET THIS BIBLE!

A Life Changing Catholic Bible
the Christian Community Bible is an excellant achievement of scholarship and devotion. Most Catholic Bibles have just technical scholar notes or none at all. None of them have any Life application or spiritual guidance type of notes. This Bible brings a new quality often missing in Catholic Bibles (except for recent teen Bibles) that is commonplace in Evangelical Bibles. It goes one step further than its evangelical counterparts in that it stresses community as well as the personal in its notes. My understanding is this Bible is used by Base communities and others in Latin America and Philippines and was recently translated into English. It has revolutionized my life.

Fun!
I've always been interested in old houses, and my recent favorite era is the '20s. This catalog-turned-book thrilled me! It was so much fun to look at the blueprints for houses that contained servants' quarters and only one bathroom and to read the silly descriptions. It was like taking a step back in time. I imagine this would be a perfect tool for someone wanting to build a modern version of a '20s-style home ... that's what I hope to do one day.

Another great reproduction from Dover
This is a reprint of a house plan catalog from 1927. These books are actually exact reprints of original plan books from the turn of the century (1880-1925, roughly - this book is one of the latest years in the series). Dover adds little or no modern explanations, just presenting the catalog as it was. So when one looks to review these books, one isn't really judging the modern-day publisher, or editing, or writing. The only modern element is the accuracy of reproduction- in some cases, if pages in the originals that Dover found are damaged or torn, that page is reproduced in the original with the tear, smudge, blot, or hole showing. So to judge the books, one has to compare each one to others of its kind, and then to decide whether the material in it is thorough and complete according to the standards of its time. Since there are several dozen of these catalogs published by Dover, we have the basis for such a comparison.

This book originally was "Loizeaux's Plan Book No. 7" published by the J.D. Loizeaux Lumber Company. The book starts with photos of the Loizeaux business locations including their lumber plant and their builders' supply yard and dock. There are several pages showing a complete example of what blueprints one receives if one orders a plan. Then there's an article on styles of homes, which gives the modern reader a glimpse of what styles were most popular at the time.

The book continues with still more articles and advice, before getting to plans: a section on decorating, including what color schemes are advised for each room. One interesting feature to today's eyes is the recommendation of strong colors for walls - according to Loizeaux, white should be used only sparingly! There are illustrations of furnished rooms. Although black and white, each is accompanied by a description of its colors. Here's a nice tasteful bedroom: "Walls are tinted soft peach or apricot. Casement curtains are of sunfast voile or net in ecru or café au lait. Valence at top of window is of violet sateen with draperies of cretonne, chintz, or printed linen. Bed cover of violet sateen, flounce of soft jade green. Shirred over-spread of thin dotted swiss. Deep blue Wilton carpet and cushion on window seat. Slipper stool and lamp shade are in soft rose taffeta." Certainly makes your current bedroom sound pale, doesn't it?

In the illustrations of the kitchen and bathroom, we can tell that we are moving from the turn-of-the-century to the Art Deco era, because no longer are they done in gleaming "sanitary white" tile; now the tiles include colors and patterns.

The floor plans actually start on page 17. Each page contains an illustration (sometimes, but not always, a photo), upstairs and downstairs floor plans, a listing of overall dimensions, and 2 or 3 sentences about the house. Each room on the floor plan is labelled, and the various built-ins such as a telephone nook, medicine cabinet, or bookshelf, are pointed out.

Partway through the book, the plans are interrupted by more articles: one on how to heat the small home - basically, an ancestor of the infomercial, really a long advertisement for a particular brand of heater that Loizeaux sells. Likewise an article/ad for hot water heaters. Check out the article on G-E Wiring Systems on pages 70-71; the illustrations of a couple being shown a house by an agent are funny. Perhaps one of the funniest articles is the page about the "combination bath." This was supposed to be a new, modern, convenience, combining a seat, foot bath, shower, and child's bath all in one. Looking at the illustrations (including an unclothed young man in the shower- how racy!), one can see that this design is just an accident waiting to happen, which must have finally occurred to the company, too, because we certainly don't see any of these combination baths any more!

Little sketches here and there add to the charm of the book - a drawing of a child operating a garbage burner, of a furnished sun parlor, and so on.

While most of the plans are for single-family houses, there are a few for duplexes or apartment buildings. This book is also late enough into the century that we can take interior bathrooms for granted; the 1920's are quite modern compared to a 15 years earlier. Other plan books, from 1912, for example, still have half the houses without indoor baths, and many not wired for electricity. On the other hand, it's still long enough ago that there are a few houses with thatched or wooden roofs; there are not yet garages featured automatically with the houses, and the kitchen stoves still need a chimney vented to the outside. I greatly enjoy comparing books from a few years apart, to see the progress being made.

In summary: the extensive number of articles/ads in the plan book make it a valuable addition to a collection, because they provide so much information about what daily life and average tastes of the time were like, not just what architectural styles were popular. Fun reading, fun to browse, and also a valuable reference for anyone who is studying old houses and neighborhoods.

A wealth of information
The plans in this book are very similar in design to my bungalow home. From general interior layout to exterior apperance, this book has given me ideas to improve the exterior of my home! I've read this book over and over many atimes. Purchase it and use it for future referance, as I will when I build a home from one of the plans in this book!

Classic Joints with Power Tools
I know Yeung and have taken a number of classes with him. At first, I was surprised to hear that he was writing a book on power tools. He is the master of hand work skill and sensitivity. His philosophy of furnituremaking is one of respectfulness and thoughtfulness about the wood, the design of the peice and the process of creating it. This book on using power tools carries this philosophy through in the directness and clearity of his discritptions, explaination and instruction. His familiarity of the process of joinery is so complete that the information flows to the reader as if they are having a friendly converstaion with Yeung about the ins and outs of what to do and how to do it. I recommend this book fully.

Classic Joints with Power Tools sets a new standard!
This book is logically organized so that it's easy to find the information you need. The clarity of the text is amazing - no extraneous stuff, just a simple, clear description of the how to make the joint and why you would use it. The drawings and photos are EXCELLENT and really help support the text info. Yeung Chan is an excellent teacher!

Do it YOUR way, and get it RIGHT.
This is the book that 'The Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery by Gary Rogowski ' should have been. Clear and concise photos, clear line drawings and a logical scheme of organisation. The book covers using table saws, routers, bandsaws, drills, morticers and plate joiners to make general and specialised joints.

Interestingly it's edited by Andy Rae who also writes for Taunton Press.

A streamline house beautiful.
A really super book for the price. This is a paperback reprint of a book published in America in 1940. Each house has one or more photos, inside and out, plus a plan (though these are somtimes too small to read) and details about what the owners wanted, site, cost, materials, exterior and interior details etc. The black and white photos are good considering they have been taken from a printed source.

The authors describe the concept of modern architecture in the short introduction and in the back each architect writes about their views on design. I must have looked through this book dozens ot times and I still love these houses. Unfortunately I bet a lot of them are no longer standing, which makes this reprint even more important as a visual record.

If you are interested in this type of streamline building have a look at 'The Modern House Today' by Nick Dawe and Kenneth Powell, this has excellent color photos of sixty-three houses in England that are still standing, unfortunately the book is let down by the minimalist design. Charlotte and Peter Fiell's massive 576 page reference book '30s and 40s Decorative Art' covers Moderne houses (mostly in the US and Europe) with photos of interiors, ceramics, textiles and lighting. All three books are worth owning.

The innovative and passionate spirit of modern architecture
"Classic Modern Homes of the Thirties" is an unabridged reprint of a book first published in 1940, and thus serves as a valuable historic document. But this introduction to the "modern" style of architecture is not just a book for historians: it is visually stunning achievement that will be appreciated by all who have a passion for the art and science of home architecture.

The book introduces the reader to 62 marvelous houses which exemplify the modern style. Architects represented include Gregory Ain, George Howe, Richard J. Neustra, Raphael S. Soriano, and many more. Detailed floor plans, exterior and interior photographs, and details of construction are included. The houses range in size from modest 1- or 2-bedroom homes to expansive, luxurious mansions.

This book is a spectacular introduction to the vocabulary of the modern period in architecture. The photographs and floor plans capture the bold interplay of geometric shapes, the experimentation with glass and other materials, the profusion of balconies and terraces, and above all, the concern with functionality that motivated the masters of the modern.

Co-authors James Ford and Katherine Morrow Ford have included a interesting introduction. Also included is a collection of brief statements by many of the featured architects.

This is a great book for those interested in American cultural history, interior design, home photography, and other subjects. But at its core this book is an excellent record of and tribute to one of the most remarkable movements in the history of home architecture.

Excellent insight into the beginnings of modern architecture
This is a wonderful book combining insight into "modern" residential home architecture of the 30's with a view into the lives of those who designed and lived in them. Like all Dover books, this title is remarkable well printed which allows the reader to easily see all the floorplans, pictures and other images of these homes. The text tells the reader about the family the house was built for, their lifestyle and needs, the layout and construcion details and decorating details of their home. What is remarkable is how fresh many of these homes look today and how much recent modern architecture owes the pioneers who designed these homes. Very enjoyable... anyone who appreciates architecture and history will love this book.

A truly beautiful book!

This is a book for your coffee table! It of course covers the history of Colt firearms, and was written by (who else?) the historical consultant to the Colt Firearms Division.

Wilson is also a well-known collector, free-lance consultant and well-known author in the firearms field. This is his twentieth book, and perhaps his best.

The book is well-written, of course, and the epitome of accuracy--deriving its facts and figures directly from the horse's mouth, so to speak--but its greatest value is the exquisite color photography with which it is filled.

There are 406 gorgeous eight and a half inch by eleven inch (landscape) pages, almost all of them containing color photographs of great beauty, depicting historical firearms directly from Colt's own collection, as well as from other sources.

If you are a firearm aficionado, or a Colt collector, or just a history buff who appreciates the role Colt firearms have played in American history, this is the book for you.

It is one of my most prized books.

history ????
This book was well worth the money There are some serious mistakes when dealing with history. other then that a very usefull book.

IF ONLY
We bought a house in Cortona Italy 12 years ago only after a long hard search. IF ONLY we had Gordon Neale's book with us on that first trip hunting for the perfect house. His detailed knowledge of the intracacies of house buying law in Italy is infinite and we would have had fewer grey hairs if this book was available then
. Apart from that it is a wonderful guide from a very sympathetic student of the history, language and humanity of the Italian nation. In concise chapters he will give you the benefit of his long study and experience of the regions, their differences and special charms. The stuff this man has learned would take the casual visitor more than a life time to obtain. Here is his knowledge for you to savour at the cost of a paperback. This is not just a book for aspiring house buyers, it is an invaluable asset to anyone travelling in Italy. IF ONLY, we had had this book all those years ago, but we have it now and it brings even greater pleasure to our life Bella Italia

Please differentiate between the two Gordon Neales
As the author of this book I would like to point out that I am not the same person as my namesake who writes homoerotic novels such as "To Serve Two Masters". "Buying a House in Italy" belongs to a different genre altogether.
Perhaps Amazon could follow the example of their UK branch and put a C in front of my name on their listing to differentiate between the two Gordon Neales.

Don Christians, author of Homer's Whip
With humorous little twists, a large dose of satire and an inside look at the culture, neo-culture and counter culture of Berkeley, Hill weaves a novel not so much a mystery but an exposition of relationships centered around of all things an apartment house. The poet shows through in both the writing and the plot. A good book, a quick read.

Praise for The Chandler apartments
Owen Hill's breathless, sly and insouciant mystery novel is full of that rare Dawn Powell-ish essence: fictional gossip. I could imagine popping in and out of his sexy little Chandler building apartment a thousand times and never having the same cocktail buzz twice. Poets have all of the fun, apparently.
