witty, poignant, poetic
This woman got through her grinding childhood with something!
She sure can write!
Like Family is at once witty and poetic, and it rings true at many levels. Some of the descriptions are heart-wrenching in their honesty and vulnerability.
This book ought to be read by anyone who works with children in danger or in bureaucratic systems, for its ability to convey the recurring states of complete confusion and powerlessness that haunt these children.

Are You My Mother?
In this highly descriptive and compelling memoir, Paula McLain shares with us her unstable, inconsistent, yet memorable childhood as a foster child growing up with her two sisters. She also shares her heartbreaking disappointments and adult perspective. I breathed a sigh of relief when I finished the book, knowing that Paula and her sisters reached adulthood and made better lives for themselves than their biological parents.

Growing Up Scared
A couple of months after their feckless, volatile father lands in jail, Mom drops the three girls off at Granny's one evening and doesn't come back for 16 years. Paula, age 4, and her sisters, Teresa, 6, and Penny, 3, prove too much for the old lady and enter into a long and rocky relationship with the Fresno, CA, foster care system.

Paula McLain's harrowing memoir of growing up among strangers who may or may not become family teems with complex, shifting emotions. Chief among them, especially in the early years, is fear, and the yearning to belong to a family, any family. But that was not to be. Not quite anyway. McLain's fluid prose captures the reader with its immediacy; its sense of urgency and its intimacy. This is a page-turner with real orphan children to root for.

It never seems to occur to the girls, as it does to the reader, that they could be separated. But they never are, which is the saving grace of stability that runs through their Dickensian childhood. Their first brief placement ends with a charge of thievery, but their second is a mystery. The Clapps are wealthy and their children are grown. Mrs. Clapp has no humor and no affection. Her rules and routines are rigid and she is fanatically house proud.

One rainy day after school, the girls slosh through puddles to the car. "Just as we got to the Cadillac, the sky started to drop hail like frozen BBs. Mrs. Clapp sat behind the wheel in her lavender rabbit-fur coat, her dry fingers toying with the door lock as though it were a chess piece, deciding whether she would let us into the car. We'd ruin it, we would."

So what does she want with three little girls? This is not McLain's question; it's the reader's, and McLain never comes out with the horrifying answer, either. She simply takes you there and lets you see for yourself how things are. The third placement, also brief, is the most heartbreaking. These people want children, delight in their new girls, and yet suddenly, mysteriously, it's over and the sisters find themselves with their fourth family in three years.

"If we felt any hope that this new situation would be different, then it was the stowaway version, small and pinching as pea gravel in a shoe." The Lindberghs make no secret of their reason for taking in three foster girls. Their daughter, Tina, is an only child and wants siblings. It's that simple. Bub Lindbergh is a big bear of a man, "easy to love," who teaches the girls to ride and gets each of them a pony, while his wife, Hilde, a German immigrant, is prickly and unpredictable. She spoils her "real" daughter and delights in telling perfect strangers the sad history of her foster daughters.

McLain's anger comes through in shock waves of description - hilarious bizarre incidents perpetrated by blotchy, oversize, cartoon character Lindberghs. Interspersed with moments of tenderness, even joy. McLain (her first book of poems, "Less of Her" was published in 1999) is a visual, visceral writer unafraid to mix brutal honesty and laughter. She and her sisters are not easy children and never lose sight of the fact that, unlike other children, they can be cast off at any time, their worldly possessions lumped in a trash bag in the back of the social worker's car. It's a scary way for a child to live.

McLain's memoir is many things: a gut-wrenching portrayal of growing up insecure and longing for love, a celebration of sibling solidarity, a catharsis and a satisfying revenge on people who once had the power, and will recognize themselves as they read. Funny, bleak, angry and winsome, McLain's debut is beautifully written and compulsively readable.

Measuring, Marking & Layout: A Builder's Guide
Published in Hardcover by Taunton Press (October, 1998)
Author: John Carroll
Amazon base price: $34.95
Used price: $24.90
Buy one from zShops for: $24.89
The common and sensible dictum among carpenters--"Measure twice, cut once"--is only the beginning for Carroll, who manages to take some very complex information and distill it into readable and understandable form. There are chapters devoted to laying out foundations, frames, roofs, stairs, masonry units, and finishing materials, and many little-known tricks of the trade and shortcuts. Carroll covers all the basics of tools and techniques, shows how to measure larger dimensions on projects while working alone, and shows that one needn't be a master mathematician to assure accuracy in projects, nor use space-age, high-tech equipment to achieve near-perfect results in a building project. From the simplest how-to project for a home handyperson to constructing an entire house, proper, accurate measurements are the very foundation of a successful result. Using common sense and care in measuring can save time, materials, and money on any home repair or construction plan. This is the book to tell you everything you need to know before you get started. --Mark A. Hetts

Very helpful for learning or reference
I am a project manager for a commercial / industrial contractor. So many times I am changing gears, direction . . . in coordinating the project. Calls from other contractors and or the field keeps you busy and frequently having more to do immediately than you feel you can do in days. But this book is useful. While much of it relates to residential construction, simple layouts and thought processes do not change. While so many times I am challenged with laser layouts and trades that swear their layout is on the money, a few time proven methods and understanding can prove the " sure money " wrong. This book is well organized, clearly written and the compilation of formulas and calculations is helpful. This book will prove to be very useful for a do it yourselfer or anyone working within the trades or offices alike. I certainly recommend this book.

Great Book!
This book is a must have! Great information and laid out well. I wish I had known about this book earlier.

this is a keeper
This book is well thoughtout and covers all the details a builder needs to do accurate layouts. I would recommend it for both those learning and the professionals in the building trades as a reference source. I have seen and purchased some of the authors other books and would not recommend them to building professionals.

I liked that this book is hard covered. The diagrams used to explain the concepts are accurate and concise. It is not "exotic" in the types of layouts it covers but covers the basics well. Lead carpenters and journeyman layout carpenters won't find much new here. But for apprentice and carpenters and builders still learning there trade it has merit.

Mexican Country Stlye
Mexican Country Style was received as a a Christmas gift in December, 2000. Originally used as a "coffee-table" book, once I started to read the descriptions with each photograph I was hooked. Not only will you be able to navigate the architectural terminology like a pro, you will also get a glimpse of the past as only a tourist does when he travels with a guide from the area. Joe and Karen's personal travels' are documented with breathtaking color photos and detailed accounts of their visits into the heart of Mexico. Once you begin reading the book, you will not want to put it down until the very last page!! Mexican Country Style is a great read and an educational journey for the soul.

The definitive book on Mexican country decor!
Beautifully photographed with a pallete of colors that invite you to decorate a small space or an entire home. Mexican Country Style is the definitive volume for those of us who seek southwestern/south of the border interior design, furnishings and accessories. Sumptuous photos that invite you to sit down with a margarita and explore this comfort feel decorating style. Authors, Witynski and Carr, have an enthusiastic love and flare for this style decorating and this book showcases their skills.

A Stylish Presentation on Style
With the proliferation of websites offering Mexican furniture, it has become difficult to tell the real from the ersatz - and especially when it comes to antique furniture, and in the colonial style. The authors have taken all of the doubt out of the search process through an amazing inventory of furniture, accessories, and hints for discovering provenance. It's a must-read for those considering furnishing and decorating their homes in the Mexican style.

It is also an important companion volume to Mexicolor; and to those years-ago titles published by Architectural Publishing.

For the would-be the hunter of these pieces, however, this book makes one fact quite clear. The treasure troves are to be found outside the major Mexican cities, out in the provinces. But with the skills to be learned in this book, the search will be more rewarding.

Master of log building
I am so thankful and excited that I found the Log Construction Manual by Robert W. Chambers. I have many other books on the same subject and have always wanted to learn the craft by self study, but I have not been impressed with any book until now. Robert Chambers is perhaps the world's best, a master, of full- scribe log construction to date! It is refreshing to read something that broke through the old ways of log building that have been used and practised for a hundred years.
Mr. Chambers is an inspiration and I feel so confident from learning from his book that I will now build the best log cabin I could have ever hoped for.
Thank you so much, Robert. I will be forever grateful that you shared your wisdom and great knowledge through your book, it is a treasure!

This book is the best!
I have been interested in handcrafted log building for a long time. I bought many books on the subject, trying to teach myself the craft. They all lacked info needed by the novice. I could have saved myself alot of time and money! This is the book I was looking for! detailed, straight forward, understandable descriptions of each step... Clear, inside information about a complicated building process.
I'm confident now to practice and perfect my technique and hopefully build a log structure on some land I recently purchased.
Thanks Robert Chambers!

Excellent Textbook
After searching fruitlessly for a competent text on log building construction, I had nearly given up. By chance, I stumbled upon "Log Construction Manual" by Robert Wood Chambers at Amazon.
I made the purchase, read the information and felt compelled to write a review.
Chambers takes the complex craft of fully scribed log construction and explains through diagrams, photos, techniques, and formulas how to successfully construct a log building. Truly a comprehensive textbook, a must for anyone planning to build a log home or cabin.
Also included in this book is a chapter on log building tools, some conventional, some unique to log construction, and places to purchase tools; resources, such as book and magazine reviews, log building schools and workshops, design and engineering contacts.
A big "thank you" to Mr. Chambers

The unseen Capri
If you go Napoli's gulf you should visit Capri. Don't make the mistake i made by following herds of tourists to Capri. All that you'll be able to see is a kind of disney village and a lot of postcard shops and eat unbelievably expensive ice cream.
And you'll probably miss a landmark of architecture which is Malaparte's house.
The book is not only a great bargain, it is an intelligent tribute to Malaparte. You should also read Malaparte's The Skin.

A BOOK AS EXTRORDINARY AS THE HOUSE ITSELF!
The book is amazing. It captures the dialogue of the house and Mr. Malaparte! The play of form, thought, nature, and politics. The graphic collection is presented is a collage of layers and frames.

fascinating
more like a scrapbook, this art book was most enjoyable, voyering into a fascinating life

An absolute treasure!
This handy little cookbook is an absolute treasure! It starts out with a fascinating history of coffee, a history of Maxwell House, and then has some brewing and serving "tips and tricks." After that come the recipes!

The recipes are organized into seven chapters: 1) Breakfast and Brunch, 2) Coffee Break, 3) Lunch, 4) Afternoon Coffee Time, 5) Dinner, 6) After the Show, and 7) Midnight snack. Each of the more than 160 recipes(!) starts out with a list of preparation and (if applicable) baking times, a complexity rating (one cup to four!), a list of ingredients, and very clear step-by-step instructions.

My wife and I have found the recipes to be great, and none of the ones that we have done have proven to be all that difficult. Heck, some of the drinks are delicious, and take very little time at all. We love this book, and highly recommend it to you!

Great addition for dessert lovers
This is a fantastic addition for cookbook/dessert fanatics. It contains a great collection of delectables that are EXTREMELY easy to prepare. Ingredients are mostly cupboard staples and the recipes are very simple. These recipes are impressive when served and will generate many rave reviews. A must have for those who love chocoalte, coffee and desserts. Includes several drink recipes.

Great Combinations, Easy and Delicious
What could be better than serving a scrumptious dessert with that perfect cup of coffee? This cookbook lists over 120 recipes that all perfectly compliment coffee! All sorts of recipes are included, from breakfast to desserts, quick snacks to fancy cakes. Everyone can find the perfect recipe, no matter what the occasion. This book is great for entertaining, especially informal gatherings. The recipes are easy to make and serving something delicious and homemade is much better than offering store bought goods at a coffee social.

The perfect gift for coffee and dessert lovers!

Ursula has done it again!
This follow-up book to the incredible "Chicago Haunts" is equally as impressive and hard to put down.
While most "sequel" books are obviously comprised of filler material and rushed to press to capitalize on an earlier success, it is evident that this book was painstakingly researched. It is beautifully done. Bielski doesn't just recount ghost stories; she weaves in sympathy, historical fact, and sometimes humor to present artfully written short stories. Her hard work does not go unnoticed in this book. If you love Chicago history, ghost stories, or just good reading, this is a book for you.

Addictive Folklore
Bielski responds to hungry readers' continuing craving for otherworldly weirdness by reviewing her files for stories she sifted out of both of her previous Chicago-focused titles (CHICAGO HAUNTS editions 1 & 2). As the subtitle indicates, these stories delineate a fascinating expanse of human consciousness that lies somewhere between subjective experience and synthesizing belief.

Bielski's talent for placing myth in the context of its culture, time, and place without dissecting the thrill out of it makes her work an illuminating, entertaining ride through Chicago history from the delightfully skewed angle of enduring energies that go way beyond the city's "I Will" ethic. Her sense of humor infuses her open-minded investigator's rationality with a kind of hip campfire storyteller's glee. Don't miss the unique legacies Bielski unearths here and throughout her addictively haunting volumes.

More Things that Go Bump In the Night In Chicago
Author Ursula Bieslski provides an excellent sequel to her first book of ghostly tales. Told through historical facts and by eye witness accounts, this book is worthy follow-up. Highly Recommended! Perfect for Halloween or any ghost-hunting time of the year.

OH WERE THEY EVER HAPPY

a fun classic
First published in 1978, Peter Spier's story of the well-meaning Noonan children stands up well even after 25 years. The story of the three children who overhear their parents talking about the house needing painting and decide to surprise them will have you and your children turning the pages with bated breath as you wait to see what that house looks like! It's worth the wait -- a laugh-and-a-half for kids and their adults. As you'd expect, the illustrations are colorful and fun. This would be a great companion book with Daniel Pinkwater's 'The Big Orange Splot'.

Great Preschool Book
I truly do wish this book would come back in print... We love it at Thanksgiving when we do our family unit. it is so difficult to get it from the library anymore, because there copies were either never returned or they are damaged from so much use. PLEASE REISSUE THIS BOOK

A WOW for First Grade
My copy is tattered and torn and all forlorn but it is still a hit in first grade. We use it as a jumping off point for creative writing...sometimes I copy the text and the children illustrate; sometimes I copy the pictures and we write our own text. We love it! This particular book has set more readers on fire than I can count.

Repeat of Dragon Tales show -- not a new story
My four year old loves the Dragon Tales show and so of course likes this book as well. I disagree with the rating of this book as for babies as well as preschoolers. My 2 year old would never sit through 3 or 4 paragraphs per page. Certainly it is appropriate for preschoolers.

Another Awesome Dragon Tale Adventure!
The girls love this book as much as the video, and they have taken an interest in constellations after this tale. I like how it tackles the problem of being afraid of the dark, and again the characters work together to solve a problem. My girls loved this tale so much that I had to make stars for them to put in their rooms! lol

Excellent adventure in conquering fears!
I bought this book for my son as a gift for the day of surgery - honestly I think I was more scared than him!

We frequently read this lovely story of Ord's adventure in the Forest of Darkness and how the love and trust of his friends helped him achieve a new ability.

Lovely!

This book's a good read and a terrific resource.
I found this book to be very well organized; a plus for a book with this title. There are many good ideas; I especially like the personal notes shared by parents. I plan to hold on to this book as a resource, too, for when I move, if I have more children, and if I ever travel with little ones again.

A parenting bible.
I should have read this book sooner!!!! From A to Z this book will help you budget your time better and be more efficient. Thus giving you more time for your family and yourself. The suggestions and tips are very helpful.

A great reference book to keep on the shelf to pick up again and again.

My Review
