IF THIS HOUSE COULD TALK... : Historic Homes, Extraordinary Americans

"Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home." The buildings profiled in If This House Could Talk may not all be humble (Hearst Castle, Auldbrass Plantation, 'Iolani Palace), but at some point in their history, they all were called home. And though these are not "treasure houses" in the traditional sense, these places are true treasures. Elizabeth Smith Brownstein takes us on a tour of 28 homes, from a former royal palace to a New York tenement, from a bachelor's mansion to a writer's cottage, and a 17th-century homestead to a visionary house of the future. Brownstein looks at each home in turn, telling the story of its inhabitants--some famous (Abraham Lincoln, James Madison, Eleanor Roosevelt), some not-so-famous (John Parker, Janet Sherlock Smith, Max Mason). These stories, taken together, create a colorful--if patchy--picture of American history. The tiny bedrooms, paper-thin walls, and lack of plumbing and fresh air in the tenement at 97 Orchard Street in New York tell more about the 19th-century immigrant experience than do most history books, while the huge expanse of Biltmore highlights just how wealthy some 19th-century Americans had become. Scholarly architectural historians will find little new here, but general readers will be entranced by the dozens of photographs and Brownstein's clear love of her subject. A thoughtful gift for history and architecture buffs. --Sunny Delaney

Homes as history...
I had the pleasure of meeting the author on a flight from Frankfurt to Rome last summer. I bought and read this book with great enthusiasm. The author is brilliant and funny. The book takes us to various personalities, times and eras in the historical evolution of our country as these homes are used as the medium to demonstrate the message of the time and culture. It is eloquently written in unpretensious prose. I must read.

Fascinating!
Through history, art, architecture and more, you journey through these extraordinary Americans lives, and their homes. Elizabeth Smith Brownstein takes you on a facinating tour of 26 homes including Presidential homes, Plantations, Haunted Houses, famous Women's homes, a home of the future and more. What a great book for treasured collections, book clubs, and anyone intersted in America, history and artchitecture.

A wonderful addition to any library
This book has immediately become a favorite of my wife and I. We jump from chapter to chapter, revisiting homes we have actually been to and learning additional tidbits about them. As well, we are delving into homes we now hope to visit in the future. The pictures are well-chosen and attractive and the author's choice of text brings these dwellings to life. We recommend this "work of historic art" to everyone, no matter their level of interest in this area.

More than inspiring
Full of anecdotes and philosophy readable by anyone who considers quality in their work, regardless of their endeavor. Besides, the pictures of his work are great- a nice "period piece" for contemporary furnitue. If you fail to follow directions from magazine articles in your shop, but complete something more than what you'd originally planned, than see how a "master" can that way.

Not a step by step guide ...but maybe a self-help book
I did not know what to expect when I ordered this book I was kind of hopeing for a technical how-to guide on building cabinets.Since I was building kitchen cabinets at the time I wanted some top quality ideas and guides to build them. This book is not a step by step guide. But let me say this... this book has inspired me. Dare I say it is a spiritual guide to working with wood coupled with some solid planning and designing words of wisdom. For me it inspired me to move away from the standard straight designs and work toward more artistic and flowing furniture. Just don't buy this book thinking it is a technical how-to book on building you standard square boxes; but buy this book if you desire to build heirlooms .

Zen and the art of cabinet making
I uncarefully bought this book thinking I would enjoy it (I'm a beginner in cabinet making).

Actually, I felt almost discouraged. I felt so far away from what Krenov describes... What I mostly thought was:

1. I'll have to read this book when I know more about cabinet making, and I can probably read it a few more times...

2. I'll offer it to an Aikido friend of mine who will doubtlessly enjoy the philosophy that is behind Krenov's words.

wonderful techniques
I love this book, the wonderful quilts that were created and the very simple techniques used to achieve such dramatic results.

I was truly inspired by the landscape quilts in this book...the depth that was shown on how to make a forest look up close or distant...

the simple differences that give each quilt its unique perspective.

If you are interested in landscape quilts i found this book to be one of the best and most inspirational yet.

Excellent step-by-step details
The authors provide photographic examples of each step in creating various landscape quilts, including how to transfer your ideas or photographs onto paper, creating a variety of scenery, and the mechanics of doing so. Directions are clear and detailed.

Landscape Quilts
I have been making landscape quilts for about a year and found this book inspirational in trying a new technique. Because it includes machine quilting, I was inspired to take a class. While I don't feel that I'll ever be the best machine quilter, I know enough to complete the quilting technique in this book. I am anxious to make my first quilt using this book. The idea is on paper and I am ready to implement it.

The pictures in this book are breathtaking and inspirational. Directions are easy to follow and include special "tip" squares on many of the pages. I highly recommend this book.

EASY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND!
I am 33 years old and was always turned off by the Bible because of the arcane language. I had not picked up a Bible until recently when I saw this one at a local Christian bookstore for $49.95. This translation is exactly what I needed and what I believe newcomers to the Bible should read. Not only is the writing simplistic but almost every passage is explained in detail at the bottom of each page. I remember being young and trying to read the King James Version which was a nightmare for a young kid. I wish everyone knew this translation is available. The publisher has outdone itself by including so many extras and really simplifying an extraordinarily complicated book. Thank-you for allowing me to be able read and comprehend this important work.

This Bible really talks to YOU
I read it everyday. It is where I get all my answers to life. Reading it is a daily blessing. I may have read a certain passage 5 times before, but it does not register or it's wisdom does not present itself until something happens in my life and I am reading along and I come across the answer right under my nose. I don't know how I missed it before, but I did, even though it has been there all along. Like IT is waiting for ME. It is at moments like this that I am struck with AWE and I realize something really BIG is going on here. I have read 3 other versions but this one is the best by far.

Brings the Bible Scriptures into todays life
We are using this edition for our weekly Bible Study. The layout of this version has been extremely helpful in aiding the reader to easily understand the Scriptures. It is written in todays language. Easy to read and grasp Biblical principles. If you really want to know God spend some time in the word. History will come alive for you. The time line assists the reader in following the order events occured. This is the best Bible I own. WWJD He'd buy the book. :-) <><

Decidedly Haunting....
A most interesting pictorial collection of forlorn sadness.
I find the images both beautiful and emensly contemplative, images that conjure ghosts and spirits real or perhaps imagined, yet provacative none the less. One ponders how these phantoms shall apear in a thousand years, and rue the thought how long they may have lasted would they not been murdred by circumstances. The text that accompanies the images an important, interesting, and informative heuristic. This book ostensibly one any Artist, Architectae, or student of history should have in his LibrariƩ.

Great Photography and writing
Left me wishing the book was twice as long.

Haunting Images and Illuminating Historical Text!
A wonderful book full of haunting images of the castles and houses of Ireland that have now fallen into ruin and decay. Excellent subjects for infrared photography.

The photographs are on the whole well composed and the overall effect can be quite disturbing. An explanation of the fate of the various buildings is included. A book which sits on the shelf ready to show visitors instantly the nature and feel of infrared photography.

There is an excellent supporting article by Pete Schermerhorn in the Official Infrared FAQ describing his visits to the places photographed in the book together with map grid references.

In This Dark House

Why Is This Book Out Of Print?
This is a quirky, memorable story - the author is a brilliant writer. Many people have enjoyed this book, so why is it out of print? That really bugs me about the publishing world - how can they allow such great work to fall between the cracks, when real crap - and I mean crap - gets published. This book is a classic. It needs to be available in bookstores everywhere.

Many disturbing questions remain.
Why did no reviewer mention one of the most shocking, pivotal moments in this book? That in 1966, a 17-year-old English girl named Lubetkin, while visiting a friend in Bavaria, was treated by a German doctor for an accident to her hand - and because he suspected that she was a Jew, he chose to inject the tetanus shot into both her nipples (which later abcessed and broke open)! In 1966! Aside from the story of her father's madness (grief-driven insanity is certainly what his behavior seemed to be), looms another question - how could this sort of sadistic torture have been allowed to pass unmentioned by any other observer and to go unpunished in 1966? And in 2000?

The incident with the Nazi doctor and her parents seeming indifference to it finally lead the teenaged Ms. Kehoe to the realization that she had worth as a person and gave her the strength to break away from her father's "dark house". Unearthing the truth of her father's past buried in literally mountains of lies that comprised the deliberate, sly "shell game" Berthold Lubetkin inflicted on his wife and children is a testimony to the driving force of a tortured child's search for understanding to regain sanity from madness.

These afternoon not quite four years after Dad's death, I appeared before a rabbinical court in Boston and, having satisfied the three presiding rabbis that I knew exactly what I was letting myself in for, was formally pronounced a Jew."

A daring and insightful autobiography
Louise Kehoe takes the reader through a harrowing and difficult journey with no artifice. She manages to stay honest throughout which is what makes this story so moving. I would highly recommend this book over "After Long Silence" which is in the same genre but lacks the sincerity of this book.

It's Here Somewhere
I love this book! It was the first book on organization I ever purchased, and I wouldn't be without it. It makes the awesome task of decluttering your entire home very manageable. The process is broken into easy steps, and once you get going, you can't believe you lived with clutter all your life prior to buying this book. I've read many other books, but this one is one of the best. I do have one caution. The first time I read the book, and went through the process, I followed every "rule." Basically, their motto is, "Get rid of everything you don't use, like, have room for, need or want." I got rid of binoculars (because I hadn't used them up to that point), a set of ivory dominoes (that I didn't know were ivory, until after I sold them,--because I didn't play dominoes), an antique 1 cent NYC parking meter (because it was my husbands before we got married, and we lived in a small apartment, and I had know emotional attachment to it, etc. So there are some things you keep, just because, even if you don't need them or think you don't have room.

A Very Helpful Book!!
This book was a huge help. They help you to look at EVERY area of your home. The book is laid out very simple and you can skip over the chapters that don't pertain to your own home. They did offer some advice that I don't agree with (I don't agree with getting rid of EVERYTHING) and the idea of hanging drawstring bags on the inside of every closet door?? (I think that sounds a little tacky.) But, other than that this book is a quick read, which is helpful so you can get started right away! I defintly recommend this book to anyone trying to get organized!

How to streamline so that cleaning is easy
I've read many books on how to organize, how to declutter, etc. but have found none to be as straight forward and helpful as this one. The authors do not spend too much time trying to entertain, they teach. Perhaps there are many others out there who are not messy as much as they are overwhelmed with where to put stuff. This book helps!

Fun, fun, fun!
If you love "high kitsch" and gaudy colors, this book is a delight and an inspiration for artists and decorators! Every time I open the cover, I grin BIG. From silly to sublime, the projects in this book aren't by-the-numbers... they're divinely inspiring and just plain FUN!

I love it!
I love this book! The pictures are beautiful and the ideas are inspiring. The projects in the book are fantastic. They also work as a springboard for coming up with great latin themed projects of your own

I am so happy I finally bought this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've seen this book everywhere. My friends have it and rave about it, I leafed through it once at a party and was curious about the projects if they were hard or not. I'm not a big crafty type, in fact I suck at crafting. But I am trying to fix my home up in a unique way that includes my culture without having the same stuff that every one else has. Later on in two separate book stores at 2 different times I saw La Casa Loca on the shelf. Finally I took it as a sign. I'm soooo glad I did. The ideas are a lot easier than I thought and they came out just as cool as in the pictures. I made the Carmen Miranda lampshade but instead I used the Loteria pictures. I also made my own version of the glitter bottles. And I made the CD windchime too. I'm so proud of myself and am even thinking about getting Kathy's other book about shrine making. Buy this book if you want to make cool Latino stuff for your home, it's so different that anything I've seen on design books. Instead of just looking at pictures, La Casa Loca has the directions on how to make it. I hope Kathy does a follow up book on La Casa Loca!!

Great book!
The Last Safe House is a fictional story with non-fiction stories in it. It tells about people in slavery during the mid eighteen hundreds. I recommend this book for kids 7 years old and up. They will enjoy the excitement of the story while learning about all the great African-Americans. I would give this book a four and a quarter stars. I think that you will have a good time with this book.

AwwwwwSome
The last safe house is a great book. It shows the trails of a runnaway slave and how it does't matter whats your color you are.People are not always friends but really know.

Superior in Every Way
Wow, does it make for persuasive argument if I just say this book is good? No, but Barbara Greenwood's "The Last Safe House"" is a must for anyone interested in the topics of slavery, underground railroad or 19th century history, (America or Canada).

What makes this book so special is that it is so much more that just a young adult novel. Yes, there is a fictional story being told here, but mixed into the fictional story are non-fictional side bar stories. So for example when the story starts to tell of a nefarious slave catcher, the author stops the fiction and starts giving us a real background of slave catchers and how they operated. Basically the footnotes for her story become part of the story. And believe me it is not distracting at all. It's almost like Barbara Greenwood is sitting us next to a fire and telling us the story and pausing every once in a while to more fully explain some things.

I also loved Heather Collins's illustrations. We are not talking the fine art you occasionally see in juvenile books, but we are talking very functional drawings that not only add to the story but to our general understanding. I would love to have a poster size picture of her drawing of "A Cotton Plantation."

In addition to the great design of this book, there are some story details that are often skipped over in many other similar type books. First off, she tell the story that slaves were still not completely free even if they made it to Canada. Also while Canada may have been the land of the free, it was not completely free of prejudice.

I collect books about the underground railroad as a hobby. And Barbara Greenwood's "The Last Safe House will be one of my most recommenced reads.

Snip, snap, snout, my tale is told out . . . . :-)

Uplifting
Great book for recovering people who are lost souls, trying to find the meaning for their lives, both internally, and externally, without the Grace of the Lord. Will help many to find their true purpose, as God through Jesus Christ, intended.

Excellent tool for Christians in recovery
I use this Bible to facilitate two Christian 12-Step recovery meetings in West Texas and highly recommend it to all newcomers. I have found that having a Bible that focuses on the principles of the 12-Step program and tying those principles for living to the Word of God have been very helpful to not only me personally, but also to those who come to the two groups. Thanks such much for such a wonderful tool to learn how to clean up my past, live in the present and look forward to the future as I apply these principles and use the devotionals to my life one day at a time

Excellent
