A John D. MacDonald book about cats?
It is! MacDonald's first words in his forward: "This is not a luvums-divums-itsyboo book, about pooty-tats."

And it isn't. I've never been a fan of MacDonald mystery-thrillers. But the author demonstrates in this book that he's a multi-faceted human being. Of the hundreds of books available about house cats this one is among the best I've ever read. I sincerely hope someone brings it back into print. If you love cats and books about human attachments to animals you'll love this book.

JOHN DANN AT HIS BEST
"THE HOUSE GUESTS" LEAVES NO QUESTION WHY JOHN D. MacDONALD RECIEVED SEVERAL HONORARY PhDs IN LITERATURE. IT IS AN EXCELLENT READ, WHETHER ONE LIKES CATS OR NOT.

Lucky find for a T. McGee fan.
I had always been a Travis McGee fan and enjoyed other MacDonald books as well. Then I stumbled on "The House Guests" in the library. A nonfiction look at John D. Macdonald's life with pets over the years, I found this book a compelling look inside the life of the creator of T. McGee. I just enjoy the way this man writes, whether it be pulp fiction of this warm tale of domesticity. I love knowing that the creator of the perennially unattached T. Mcgee was a loyal husband and family man. And animal lover. So sad that we lost this talented writer way too soon.

As good as when I was 8!
This was one of the books from my third grade reading list twelve years ago, and one of the few children's books that has stayed on my shelf at home. This month I picked it up looking for something to distract me from my insomnia while home from school, and I thought it was just as great. Perfect for devotees of Harry Potter read-alongs with children, this book sounds just as wonderful read at bedtime as it does in a classroom....

Great read-aloud book
Some books are good for independent/silent reading but they do not make good read-alouds. The House in the Snow is both. It is interesting to both boys and girls and is packed with exciting situations. My favorite extension is to have my 4th grade students draw the "invisible" fight scene. Because this book is out of print, I have been looking for used copies! I bought 3! Because it is out of print, most students have never heard the story which makes reading it to them more interesting.

actually a good book
This book is really good. I hate reading and I hate reading books with more than 12 words, so any book that can keep my interest is a definate 5 star (out of 5 stars) Doesn't take long to read and thats another good part. You should get it and read it!

nigel is king of the sprawl
this book along with nigels other shadowrun novels are what shadowrun is all about. nigel really made the world of shadowrun such a great and better place. me and close friends still roleplay the game and mention nigel every time. his stories and characters are the greatest. in his books he mentions about a 'kindred spirit'. nigel was one of these. i've reread his books many times to escape into his stories. i recommend this book and all his others.

A Quality Never Matched
Nigel D. Findley (who passed away while this book was in it's final stages of rewriting)was, and most conisder he will always be, the true visionary of the Shadowrun universe. Unlike the smug writers now who churn out nothing but hack pasted together from the sourcebooks, Findley understood, and developed a considerable amount of, the Shadowrun technology beyond that available to the players for game purposes. His clarity and creativity has never really been matched since his passing, and this book stands as the last testement to that real genius of intellect. Sadly, most of his plots and ideas have, since his passing, been turned into silliness and tripe by the authors FASA has hired out for its novel series. Get this book and Lone Wolf. Also get 2XS and Shadowplay if you can find them. Findley WAS Shadowrun, and with him gone the place is cold and hollow. Treasure these novels, they are all we have left of him.

The late Findley's finest work.
Nigel Findley was always a creative and original writer, but this novel takes the cake. Nigel's Derek (Dirk) Montgomery character was his favorite, and shines as bright as the sun in this novel. Dirk has to pay a debt, and finds himself in constantly increasing trouble as the story progesses. House of the Sun was filled with action, fantasy, twists, and Dirk's trademark dry humor.

FANTASTIC!
This book is a "wonderment." And a "wonderment" is a thing of wonder. Don't bypass this book if you are anal. Anals have super clean houses and are frequently
nurses. They start sniffing the air for dirt as soon as you walk in. The author calls
them "clean-o-holics." This is such a great book. It's like being at Disneyland.
We first go to section 1 (there are six sections). Here we may be in for some disappointments. The author won't say it. But she really hypothesizes that you
can't have (this is hard to grasp) a user-friendly house or dwelling unless you have
a minimum of some time-management or organizational skills. Now she doesn't
write separate books on time-management or organization, but she does give the
bare minimum of these skills. That includes calendars and "to-do" lists. She does
say that you can go right to the other sections to learn. But the implications are
what I just stated. Sections two through four give us all the stuff that we need.
The messy bathroom. The messy kitchen. And so on. This takes up a lot of room
in the book. About 180 pages of this 350-page book. Section 4 is about "troubleshooting." The stuck door, bugs, the plunger. Section 5 is about safety.
Burglars, bad food, accidents. Section 6 is "The Part of Tens." Basically everything
that we didn't cover in the previous five sections. One of the points that I am trying to make is that this book is even good for the "clean-o-holic." Because they can find out how much they don't need to do. Thank you. I hope that I have helped

Martha Stewart, move over!
Why didn't my mother tell me all this? I believe that reading this book should be required along with every marriage license, lease and mortgage agreement. This book is a natural for a bridal shower gift, or anyone just setting up housekeeping. I'm giving it to everyone on my gift list for Christmas!

You need this book, even if you think you don't.
A friend gave me this book as a housewarming present and I thought she was nuts because I've had my own home for 30 years. What could I possibly learn from a book about keeping house? As it turns out, plenty! I cannot believe how many hints, ideas and shortcuts I've used from the book -- on taking care of my house, clothes, car, pets. Mine is by my bedside, so I can read a little passage on how to get wax out of carpeting or iron a shirt efficiently before I go to bed. Lest you think I'm a cleaning fanatic, I am not. My house is littered with papers and junk because I work full-time. What this book has done is show me how to use shortcuts and techniques that make keeping things under control easier and less tedious. I salute Janet Sobesky and the publishers. If the whole series is as useful as this book, I'm buying them all.

A Life Worth Living
One woman's journey through life as told from the perspective of each of her homes, from childhood on. It captures you and takes you right back to your own childhood. The has a wonderful ebb and flow; laughter and sadness. A reminder of how special and unique each of our life's are, and how in the tragedies sometimes lay the greatest gift.

Family, Love and Hope
The author allows us to peer through the windows of her family homes and see her loving family as they experience the cycles of life. The author's unique personal story of happiness and tragedy is inspirational and very moving. Her message of love and hope for the future is a lesson for us all. I wish everyone could read this book.

A Worthy Read
It is said that we all have a story to tell, a book to write, an interesting life lived. The author was the typical suburban working mom, with two kids, a career, husband, two cars, and a bright future. In one day, her life fell apart. You will reel from the shock. Your life too will seem more fragile and the threads that hold your heart and mind together will be weaker and yet stronger. Her story is one of hope, survival and optimism in the face of further tragedy that abruptly changed this woman's outlook on life. Her story is worth reading. You will remember the rooms and houses of your life. Her aunt's kitchen alone will flood your senses to memories that you long had forgotten. I highly recommend this book. You will cry, you will remember and you will carry on.

The House in the Steeple
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Wings ePress, Inc. (01 September, 2001)
Author: Jane Hollingsworth
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Read like a Stephen King novel!
House in the Steeple grabbed me on page one and never loosened its grip. Suspense, horror, love-it's all here, with a cast who all have issues and stories to tell...or hide. Eleven year-old June, psychic, bi-racial, floundering in the "system," and her new foster mother, Bedie, once physically and emotionally abused by her policeman husband, need to learn to love and trust again while being battered by a despicable entity haunting their house.
Tom, a former Viet Nam vet now a hardened parole officer and Tyronious, June's ex-con brother just released from prison and determined to take his sister back, both non-believers of the supernatural, are determined, for there own reasons, to help June and Bedie rid themselves of the horror surrounding them.
From the "olden" Victorian house to the most minor player, Ms. Hollingsworth builds character and story rich in that subtle yet exquisite detail that evokes every sense of the reader. House in the Steeple is one of those books that keeps you up till the wee hours reading, and was the first book in years that I've read that gave me nightmares. I can't wait for the sequel.

Bonnie Napoli, author of Shadows of the Eclipse

Best ghost story ever!
The very thought that an "average" person like Bedie could be haunted by an evil entity made me feel that it could happen to anyone of us at anytime. This tale while set in modern times, brings up the memories of reading ghost stories on rainy afternoons, when any sound could startle you with delightful chills. Jane Hollingsworth knew what she was doing when she wrote this book.

A Page turner!
From its opening moment, until its gripping resolution, "The House in the Steeple" captures the imagination as well as the heart of the reader. Weaving a tale that is simultaneously supernaturally creepy, yet rich in psychological detail, Jane Hollingsworth makes us want more. I, for one, was very interested in the fate of June -- a delightful and appropriately righteous child.

Elements of the social injustices of our time as well as hope for their remediation are offered in this book. Don't be surprised to catch yourself reading at red lights to race to finish The House in the Steeple. A great book to escape the everyday.

House of Chains (Malazan Book of the Fallen 4)
Published in Hardcover by Bantam Pr Ltd (December, 2002)
Author: Steven Erikson
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Awesome read
Fascinating book.
This is simply one of the two best series right now, if not the best. To give you an idea, I received the first four books as a present. and after a difficult and reluctant start of book one, I was gone. In two days of marathon reading, hardly stopping to eat or sleep -to say nothing of bathing - I finished book one, read book 2, 3, and 4. Amazing. high-fantasy as it's best. I'm even a little irritated when people compare it to G.R.R Martin or R.Jordan series. they are good, but the quality here is so much better that it's almost a work of art. If you like fantasy, do yourself a favour and read this series. My only regret is that I had to wait so long, when over there in britain they've been out forever.

Another excellent book that continues a fantastic series
This book continues the tale where it was left off in the second book and leads us through to the meeting of forces in the holy desert of Raraku. The pace is fast and the characters memorable. Although it can be read as an individual book I would strongly recommend reading the series in the published order:-

1) Gardens of the Moon
2) Deadhouse Gates
3) Memories of Ice
4) House of Chains

The reason (apart from it being one of the best series I have ever read, see the reviews and ratings 4.5-5 stars each!) is that to gain the maximum enjoyment you need to understand the characters which have been built up over the previous 3 books into some of the most memorable I have the pleasure to experience. Fiddler and his love of explosive munitions, which he uses too close to allow his squad to feel comfortable.
A number of new characters that played small rolls in the previous books are brought to the fore as we see the interlacing of stories that helps explain some of the previous unexplained questions from previous books but also raises new ones. The best thing is that the story lines are separate but interlaced in a way that actually closes some of your unanswered questions! Unlike some series.
I am eagerly awaiting the 5th book, that I will undoubtedly buy as soon as it appears

Strange and excellent .
Fantasy writers tell usually tales about power , quests and the eternal struggle between good and evil .
G.R.R Martin is not .
S.Erikson is not either .

There is a dark poesy in this series that takes you and carries you along .
Every character is a world in itself .
Let us not be mistaken , there is a lot of action and it IS an epic tale with a huge scope and a highly detailed world .
But Erikson somehow succeeds to give to each and every character a unique greatness .
There are no flat , mindless characters (like f.ex Goodkind's Rahl who is so stereotypical that it borders on parody) , the people you meet here are like nothing you have ever seen .

By any means , read it and have an experience that will make you wanting much more of S.Erikson .

You'll Get Addicted!
This play is so incredibly awesome that I strongly suggest any aspiring playwrights, actors, directors, and anyone who loves a good dark comedy MUST READ THIS PLAY! The movie features Parker Posey as Jackie-O and if you want to see this superbly written character come to life, then you should go out and rent the dvd as well. Wendy does an amazing job creating characters in a complex world of incest, murder, family disfunction, and insanity. You want all the characters to win even though you know they cannot. Beautifully comedic with crisp witty language and banter. Read it and I promise you will agree!

a brilliant, twisted ride
Upon finishing The House of Yes, I decided that it was without a doubt one of the best plays I have ever read. Set in the dysfunctional Pascal home during a hurricane on Thanksgiving, the audience gets a glimpse at the incestuous relationship of twins Jackie-O and Marty, their fascination with the Kennedy assasination, and what happens when an outsider (Marty's doughtnut shop worker fiancee Lesly) is thrown into the mix. Wendy MacLeod has written a brilliant play and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good, black comedy.

Completely Twisted
I read this book and was completely thrown from my seat. If you like the utterly messed up than this is your book. Jackie O. is the best character I have ever encounterd in any of my reading escapades. You almost want her to get what she wants and that is why it is completely twisted.

Polsby at his best
"How Congress Evolves" is elegantly written, cogently argued, and politically astute. Nelson Polsby gives his readers the benefit of four decades and more of immersion in and observation of Congress, along with his penetrating insights into politics, people, and institutions, and a writing style that is at once accessible and sophisticated. Novices and experts, students and practitioners, scholars and journalists, all will learn immensely about how the House of Representatives works and how it changes."--Norman Ornstein, American Enterprise Institute

REVIEW
From the Publisher: "Nelson Polsby has been studying, reading about and hanging around the U.S. House of Representatives for more than 40 years. In "How Congress Evolves", he provides the definitive--and often witty-account of how the House has changed over time, and why." Michael Barone, coauthor, "The Almanac of American Politics"

REVIEW
From the Publisher:
"How Congress Evolves" is Nelson Polsby's magnum opus. Polsby is an institution among congressional scholars and this book will be a classic work on Congress along with the writings of Woodrow Wilson and Richard Fenno. Polsby's wonderful observations from his interviews and deft use of data about stability and change in Congress combined with his humor make the book hard to put down once you start reading it. --James A.
