High-life houses for an aristocrat.
Elton John is an aristocrat, not only because the Queen said so. He demonstrates this in every day life, in the way he admits his weaknesses, in his involvement for beautiful causes. His house on French Riviera is a jewell. It's almost "too much". But "too much" is never enough for Elton. Thanks to the great pictures from this book you will discover a yellow castle between blue sky, deep blue sea and green grass. White structure of the house creates a contrast with blue, green and yellow. These colours could have been chosen by David Hockney. Original style of this house was respected. Flowers are every where. Furniture is on line with the overall "villegiature" style. Don't dream "too much", this "Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat" life-style has a price. But who talked about money, here? Not Elton, for sure. This is, again, a demonstration of the noble qualities of that man. Never in the whole book, you will find any decoration detail that could make you think it is here to impress people or to demonstrate power. What a paradox! this modern excentric, in the tradition on XVIIIth century english excentricity, never looks arrogant. None of his crazy demonstrations of "luxe" make you feel bad. The Atlanta house is more interesting because of the beautiful furniture and made to order closets for collections of ... everything. This book is a tribute to pleasure, good taste (yes!) and high-life. I learned this word from Johnny Weissmuller in Acapulco (pie de la cuesta beach), just before he died. I think it is quite appropriate to describe what these houses are made for.

Cool Book
This book has awesome pictures of Elton John's homes, it focuses on the flowers in his houses. This book would be great to put on a coffe table, and a must for an Elton fan. I highly recommend it!

Beautiful coffee-table book.
Excellent pictorial of an extravagant livestyle! Hard to belive, though, that there is a gross misprint on page 16-- the lyrics from "Your Song" are attributed to "Mona Lisa & Mad Hatters"! Oops!

If you like art, quilting, sewing, crafts, home decorating.. and Mary Engelbreit to Martha Stewart Livng and Laura Ashley decorating.. you will like this book! Totally cool!

Fabulous
This is a great book for anyone who wants creative ways to use and display their antiques, family heirlooms, and flea market finds. The photos are inspirational and the instructions are easy to understand. I've bought two additional copies for relatives who saw my book and loved it.

Elegant yet practical items made from a variety of "finds".
This very personable book offers a novice or an accomplished crafter wonderfully interesting ideas to make with very practical items found at garage sales, flea markets, antique shops. I am now ordering books for other members of my family who have seen my book. The instructions are very easily to follow. I have already begun 3 different projects one of which is a teacup wreath that is breathtaking especially for a teapot and cup collector like myself. There so many ideas for the reasonable price of this book. It is beautifully photographed, and the authors are shown as real as the rest of us who haunt flea markets, etc.

Brilliant! A Must Read for Any Single Person!
The wisdom and expertise in this latest of Stephanie Roberts' outstanding books goes beyond Feng Shui - right to the heart. Her style is elegant, down-to-earth, and easy to understand, even if you don't know much about Feng Shui. Her wisdom brings an undeniable contribution to helping single people clear whatever may be blocking their attraction or maintenance of a healthy, enriching relationship. This book is substantial, and by far the easiest to understand and apply, compared to other more complicated books on the market. Highly recommended from my heart, Barbara Rose, Author of If God Was Like Man

Charming and truly helpful!
I've been into Feng Shui for quite a while now and so have read several books about it and I can say that Stephanie's book is defintely one of the easiest to follow, most original and most charming ones that have ever come my way. The greatest thing about it is that it doesn't only talk about the "usual" FS stuff, like symbols or gadgets that'll enhance chi in certain guas, but it also works as a kind of a psychological guide: it takes you trough the different phases of a relationship and gives you ideas on how you can make your inner self more -so to say- productive - as well as your home. Stephanie's writing style is truly charming - you feel as if she was sitting there with you. An absolute must-have on everyone's shelf looking for a new romance - whether or not into FS.

Very informative and wise
I credit feng shui with my having found the right relationship, so I wasn't looking for one. But I picked up this book because it goes a lot further than the other feng shui books I'd read. It goes beyond the generic feng shui remedies for finding or improving love and romance. A divorcee, a married woman trying to save her marriage, and a single looking for the right man all have relationship issues, but they all have different needs. So they all require different approaches. The key is to know where you are in the relationship cycle and, taking cue from the cycle of the five elements, tailor your feng shui cures accordingly. It's all much simpler than it sounds really. I'm buying this book as a gift for a few of my friends who I know will benefit greatly. Excellent, substantial book.

An excellent introduction to do-it-yourself remodeling.
Okay, I don't do remodeling so...keep that in mind when you look at my Stars score. However, my Daddy did and I like to think that a little bit rubbed off. Marvelous! The content is well laid out, easy to understand, and complete... with work sheets. Plenty of worksheets and checklists. The author seems to have thought of everything. There are seven steps here to take the homeowner, you or I, from first thought to actually doing it. Actually working on the house. Fun but frightening though this book is laid out in such a way as to gift you with confidence and yes, take away your fear. Thus, the title. Fearless Remodeling, a fascinating read. Implement it. Trade PB Spiral Bound, 232 pages, -- Leann Arndt, Reviewer

Real Help for the Homeowner!
I recently moved into an older home in a new city. Before I even considered any remodeling, I looked around for books that could help get me started. This one was great! The worksheets really helped. I really appreciated how much content there was and how many great suggestions the author had for staying within my budget. Thanks Fearless Remodeling!

What a great book!
Thanks to this book, I stopped a contractor from extracting yet another $5,000 from my wallet. An essential tool ...

Probably one of the best romances ever written
If not THE best (this is not hyperbole)...This book is really, truly superb & I promise, if you buy it, you will love & keep it always! The plot has everything you want in a romance novel and it grabs you instantly; the love story is overwhelming and sensual & the book is just a fantastic read. I always thought this book was the author's best.

Romeo and Juliet set in the Highlands. Wonderful.
August 21, 1999 I have just started to read this book for at least the tenth time. I never tire of it even though I know the storyline so well. Mary Carmichael and Hunter MacBeth's love beats all the rocks and stones that are put in their path. True love wins out! Yea!!

The best love story since Romeo and Juliet
This book made me laugh and made me cry, but most of all it made me long for a Hunter McBeth of my very own. The story held on to my very heart and I couldn't put it down until I was finished with the very last page...then I just wanted to read it all over again.

The best Garfield book of the early 1980's
I'll never forget the first time that I read this book back in the 7th grade when my younger brother checked out at the library and this book is Garfield's best book yet cause the drawings were getting better and they were starting to come up with more ideas.
The funniest moments were when Garfield ate the whole cake when the candles were still lit on the cake, when Odie eats Garfield's burger and says ribbit, his bad case of Monday's, or when Garfield beets on Odie.

If you love Garfield books, then this book is highly recommended cause it is the funniest book of the early 1980's.

a garfield preview
Garfield:He opens his mouth.Odie:he takes the hamburger!Garfield says:What the? Odie says:RIBBIT. That was a comic from Garfield sits around the house.

GARFIELD RULES!
Everybody out there keep buying Garfield books! They can be worth a lot of money someday and can become collector's items! I'm always going to keep all of mine so when I have kids they can read them!

Quite an adventourous story!
Nathan is completely determined to win the war for his country and Brother, and then marry Abigail Howland. However, he never expected to find love disguised as a male. Julie is running away from her past and Uncle, who wants to force her to marry him for her small fortune. However, she escapes disguised as a man, and is able to get a job in the army against the British. As well as fall in love with Nathan. When he finds out who she really is, he is shocked as well as outraged, but soon finds himself drawn to her and finally accepts Jesus as his savior. Will he find God's will is for him to marry Abigail or Julie. And does Abigail really love him?

Great Book
This book was wonderful. It takes you through the adventures of Nathan Winslow and the beginning of the Revolutionary war. I loved the way it made me feel like I was right there experiencing it.

The House of the Winslows Lives On!
Have you read The Gentle Rebel? Well if you haven't you should! In this book the author, Gilbert Morris, continues the House of Winslow series to the American Revolution. The great-great-grandson of Gilbert Winslow, Nathan learns what the real meaning of love is, and that sometimes love can hurt. When Nathan's younger brother Caleb was killed at Concord, he makes a vow to his brother to fight on the American side. The only problem is that Nathan is in love with the beautiful Abigal Howland a spoiled Tory, who is on the British side. Nathan very quickly befriends Laddie Smith, Caleb's friend. Laddie and Nathan bond and together they join the colonists. When Laddie is shot and taken to the home of some Quakers, who learn of 'his' deep, dark secret and of his past the whole book turns around. I liked this book because I love Morris' novels, historical, and romantic, religious books. This is a must read book! If read with the rest of the series, it will make the whole story even better. If you love romantic, historical, and slightly religious books, than this book is for you! Gilbert Morris make you feel like you are there with the characters seeing everything first hand. You must read The Gentle Rebel!

More men's colognes PLEASE
Excellent book. Well organized. I was disappointed (hence 4 stars) with the number of men's perfumes covered.. just too few compared to women's perfumes listed.

I originally bought this book becuase I am very curious as to the notes that go into creating such a fascinating array of scents. I personally own 50 colognes and perfumes, and plan to someday create my own.

One of the best I've read
I agree with "reader from Brisbane, Qld Australia." Moran knows her craft. Much can be learned from this book. I was blown away by the author's knowledge. Her writing style IS a delight, not too technical. I loved reading about designer histories. If you love fragrances, there's a touch of romance here.

Jan knows perfume - aptly describes the beauty of scents
Fragrance II has many bonuses. It does cover a lot for the perfume lover. Of those it can't detail, at least there is an 'honourable mention' section that lists many perfumes and the type they are (eg Giorgio for Men: Chypre - Spicy). Actually, reading through this list made me want to purchase Fabulous Fragrances I as well.

Page 19, called 'Perfume', on its own, makes the book worthwhile and made me know I was gong to enjoy it.

It will tempt you to look at and sample more perfumes - possibly even push your credit card up considerably, after you've read the details on some perfumes.

Jan's writing style on perfume, even before I'd gotten to her unique description on each particular perfume listed in this book, is a real delight to read - this lady knows how to make you love perfume, and appreciate the hours that go into the makeup of every bottle of perfume you've ever purchased.

Highly recommended. A very qualified Perfume lover wrote this book

Dubos: The REAL artist of communications!
You can count me "a disbeliever" of most things, but, I was talked into Feng Shui by my friends. At the suggestion of a colleague here in DC, I contracted with Ms Dubos to have a look at my Alexandria townhouse (she was most professional and most reasonable). Ms Dubos made some recommendations; I implemented them; and I am astounded to acknowledge: My home FEELS better! Ms Dubos is now highly recommended by ME also! This is GREAT stuff ! I did read her book trying to understand what she meant when she was working and found it an excellent companion to what she told me. Se is a professional!

Praise
I have been a client of Denise's for several years now, and I'm so glad to see her put into print her gifts and her expertise. She has an amazing talent for feng shui and also "seeing" beyond the normal, and she has helped me tremendously in personal matters. Now I have "Denise in a book" for ready reference, because I can't possibly remember all the wisdom she shares with me! Thank you, Denise, and I look forward with great anticipation to your next work.

Fung Shui the Invisable Art of Communication
I have read a number of books on the subject both from the India perspective and that from China. This book address the subject with great detail, expertise, and insight into this ancient wisdom. It is a bearth of fresh air to see such a work-out there that any one can pick up and read and put to work in their life, thus bringing health, happiness, and prosperity to ones life and family.

"Ironies are the way of the world."
This rip-roaring, old-fashioned saga is plot-based from beginning to end, a novel which quickly engages the reader with its excitement and never lets up. Set from 1949 to 1950, with an epilogue which brings the characters up to date in 2001, the novel uses the political tensions of the mountainous area where Kashmir, the Soviet Union, Outer Mongolia, Tibet, Afghanistan, and China converge as the catalyst for the action. Aidan Shaw, a Chinese/American journalist with Socialist/Communist leanings, disappears while on a story, and his wife and young son find themselves at the mercy of consulates, embassies, and intelligence services, none of which can give adequate information as to his fate.

Packing up her young son, Aidan' wife Joanna goes to Srinagar in search of information. Lawrence Malcolm, the Australian friend whose "hot tip" to Aidan inspired him to undertake his journey, accompanies her, bringing along Kamla, a street child Joanna has "rescued" and whose original home may have been the mountains through which they are traveling. Kamla's story parallels that of Joanna. Her first person account of life on the streets of Delhi and her "rescue" by Joanna broaden the scope and show the contrasts between those who hold the life of one individual to be paramount, such as Joanna, and those for whom survival is such a struggle that soft feelings, or "impossible goodness" are regarded as a weakness.

Coincidence plays a big role in this romantic, and at times melodramatic, novel, which uses the search for Aidan as the vehicle through which the plot progresses. The action moves from Delhi to Srinagar and the mountains around Sinkiang, and eventually includes Hong Kong, Calcutta, Milwaukee, and Washington. Liu keeps the pace moving smartly, with important details revealed at each location so that the search for Aidan never flags.

As in any plot-driven novel, we learn only as much about the characters as we need to know: the author does not dwell on psychological motivations. Aidan remains a cipher, and Joanna's transformation from idealist to more self-absorbed pragmatist is not explained in any detail. Of greater consequence is the author's belief that "Truth, in the end, requires...fact, illusion, faith--alone each is equally incomplete." The conclusion, which mirrors this belief, destroys the reader's own illusions as the facts unfold, and it is not one in which everything is resolved as the reader might expect or hope. Ultimately, what matters most, according to Kamla is not right or wrong. "It was not politics or fidelity or even understanding...It was simply our mutual ineptitude at love." For readers who believe that fidelity and understanding should be paramount values, the ending will be a surprise, and perhaps not a welcome one. Book clubs should have fun analyzing the author's choice of ending. Mary Whipple

Makes you think and converse
Upon finishing Flash House I immediately mailed it to a friend who is in a very good Book Club. Unfortunately, I am new to my area and have no one locally to discuss the book with and I need to discuss this book. It is a novel that invites dialogue. The historical element and insights were new to me. Thus, this novel opened up a new frontier starting with the "Great Game".
But it was the ending of the book that brought about my need for discussion. Any book, article, or speech that invokes or almost demands discussion is 5 stars. So, here I am awaiting my friend's reading so we can have a discussion as to the "whys" that are rumbling around in my head.

Unknown history and personal drama
I was hooked on the first page of Aimee Liu's Flash House. Reading it was a delicious adventure. I raced through chapters pulled by the gripping story, and with equal pleasure, slowed to savor the lush and intimate descriptions of India, Kashmir and China. This is a great "read", as well as a fascinating introduction to recent history being played out in today's headlines.
If Ms. Liu had written merely about the political changes and struggles of post W.W.II South Asia, the book would be both compelling and relevant. But in addition, Liu adds the emotional drama of four characters, each of whom has suffered a profound family loss, including, surprisingly, international adoption. As an adoptive parent, I found Liu's sense of the culture clash between adoptee and parent accurate, and a fascinating metaphor for the larger geo-political situation she describes.
